Expressing Christian faith in music is an idea that goes back millennia, but contemporary Christian music is one of those art forms that is, if not uniquely American, certainly recognizably so. For nearly a century, singers have been performing and recording celebratory expressions of their faith in a modern fashion, usually in English, frequently in popular musical styles. Contemporary Christian music brings religious music to the general public in a totally new way, and makes it just plain fun. If you don’t believe us, take a listen to some of these terrific groups!

Rejoice, Ye Pure of Heart It is Well with My Soul If We Ever Needed the Lord Before Were You There? Let's Go On Together to the Promised Land Illumine Me, Lord Give Me Oil in My Lamp A Shelter in the Time of Storm The Breaking of the Bread I Wouldn't Take Nothin' for My Journey Now You Better Get You Ready A Wonderful Time Up There The Lord is Coming, Are You Ready? |
From New Jersey, 4 His Glory are a Christian quartet with roots in barbershop. Member Roger Blackburn is known for his 1973 'Barbershopping in Brass' recording, and has been principal trumpet for several professional symphonies (no trumpet on this recording though). The group's harmonic identity is vertically dominant, but they also embrace the spiritual and hymn within their stylistic convergence. Songs such as 'If We Ever Needed the Lord Before' are echoes to the rousing gospel style popularized by Thomas Dorsey, 'A Shelter In The Time of Storm' to its precursor, the evangelicals written by Ira Sankey. 'I Wouldn't Take Nothing For My Journey Now, ' is arranged by Warren Haeger, and 'A Wonderful Time Up There,' is arranged by Earl Moon. 'You Better Get You Ready,' author unknown, is a mournful plea of hope for a better day, and 4 His Glory render it simply and powerfully.

In the title track, the 4 tell us, 'But if all I've done in the time we've shared, is to turn your eyes on me, then I've failed... there's someone else I want you to see.' Their message is clear and consistent throughout, as endearing and sweet as their old-time Barbershop harmonies! Listen to "Jesus Is My Lord" in RealAudio.

| We Will Glorify Have Thine own Way Adoration He Never Sleeps Beautiful Savior Children of the Heavenly Father God Be In My Head This Is My Father's World I Love You Lord Go Ye Now In Peace |
Performing at various venues all over South Florida, the non-denominational Acappella Singers was founded by Ronald Boender in 1994, as a group of semi-professional singers under his direction. The goal of this unique 32 voice ensemble is to perform only the finest a cappella choral literature in all formats including sacred, folk, classical, patriotic, and Christmas favorites. Because the repertoire of the Singers is almost entirely written in 8 parts, and could be considered pop vocal or vocal jazz, the ensemble produces a distinctive sound that is exciting to hear, and rare in the choral field. "My Father's World" features 10 beautifully arranged Christian spiritual sounds: "We Will Glorify," "Have Thine Own Way," "He Never Sleeps," "Beautiful Savior," "Children of the Heavenly Father," John Rutter's "God Be In My Head," the title tune (arranged by Paul Christiansen), "I Love You Lord," and Joyce Eilers' "Go Ye Now In Peace." Soaring harmonies, a couple of lovely solos by Elisa McCord on "He Never Sleeps" and Maryanne Webel on "Beautiful Savior," a bright, clean sound and deeply-felt lyrics are features of this very special CD.

| If you close your eyes while listening to this you might imagine yourself in the grandest of high places as the music seeps into your soul and offers you silence, grace, and purity. The Lord is My Shepherd, The twin of the Americana Collection, also provides you with simplicity in its most beautiful morph. Arranger Tom Fettke is represented well with "All That I Need", "Ride the Morning Winds" and "Worthy of Glory, while Jay Rouse stands prominent with "I Am Thine O Lord", and "O Love That Will Not Let Me Go". Other pieces that deserve recognition are "He Never Sleeps" and "Joshua" by Derric Johnson, "Surely the Presence" by Don Marsh, and "Go Ye Now In Peace" by Joyce Eilers. The voices are beautiful and strong while continuing with the direction of Ronald Boender. Listen to "Set Down Servant" in Real Audio.

| Following the inspiration of acappella arrangers Derric Johnson and Norman Luboff, Ronald Boender formed this 24 voice, mixed ensemble dedicated to performing the best of folk, sacred, Americana, and Christmas acappella. Since 1994, the Acappella Singers have built a solid repertoire of the finest acappella choral literature (in 8 parts) remaining steadfast to the foundation of the purest form of singing. Choosing Christmas songs arranged by aforementioned Derric Johnson, as well as Alfred Burt and Jay Rouse to name a few. Accentuated with sounds of a cathedral echo you can only love "Carol Of The Bells", "Joy To The World", "Caroling, Caroling", "Rejoice and Sing", and "Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence". | Fullness Of God All Men Will Know Sanctify My Heart Radiance Of God's Glory To Whom Shall We Go Sanctify My Heart Be Devoted Temptations Of Christ Lord Save Me No One Ever A Prayer Of David |
Twenty four years have passed since Tennessee-based Acappella Company first began their quiet ministry together, the dream of a young Keith Lancaster. For years an all-male quartet and now a sextet, Acappella has recorded over 26 excellent CDs and established its reputation as the premier all-vocal group of the Christian music industry. Lancaster again is producer of the album, and we are treated to several more Lancaster originals, "fullness of God," "all men will know," "to whom shall we go," "radiance of God's glory," "be devoted," the wonderful "Lord save me," "no one ever," and the powerful final cut, "a prayer of david." Ten songs in total, all a cappella. Although there are some cool pix of the group hanging out in some sort of greasy spoon in the liner notes, the Acappella Company isn't about glorifying themselves, as even the singers' names are only mentioned once, in small printthe focus is on Jesus and their ministry. Their slogan is, "hear it in our voice," and we can, and so can the millions of people who have seen this great vocal group perform and/or bought a CD. We loved every cut of "Radiance," Contemporary Christian a cappella at its very finest!

The ministry of Paris, Tennessee's The Acappella Company and Keith Lancaster continues beautifully with the Lancaster-produced "Heaven and Earth" by the four young men who call themselves Acappella. Lancaster's writing talents are everywhere on this CD, "War With Myself," "Emergency," "You Are There," "Glory and Honor," "Gone Away" and "Take Me There" feature words and music by himself or with the group. The group's Gary Evans wrote "Y.R.A.G. Radio Segue," "Dime Rhyme Segue" was written by Matt Nunnally, and Nicolas Dunbar shared writing credits on "War With Myself" and "Take Me There." 12 strong cuts, notable for their contemporary sound and feel, with flavors of hip-hop, jazz, r&b and other genres, with steady, understated guest beatbox by Tony Brown. But the message of Christian faith and belief shines strongly throughout, riding the natural vocal talents and deep feeling of these extraordinary young men. One of the best Contemporary Christian CDs we've ever heard! Listen to "War with Myself" in RealAudio.

| One of the
premier groups in Christian/gospel a cappella, "Acapella" has
released over three dozen albums, and counting. This CD is a
long-awaited "best-of" collection, and an exemplary
introduction to their musical message. This gifted amalgamation
demonstrates a truly astonishing facility within a number of different
songwriting styles: "Get To The Point" has a hook that would
be a hit on pop radio, "God is Standing By" has a Caribbean
flavor. The production of "It Was the Truth" shows how a
simple vocal effect can distinguish a song. "Sing His Praises"
again is a textbook example of production and arranging wizardry: the
syncopated "keyboard" octaves, the placement of the various
voices (panning), and the sixteenth-note bass line create atmosphere, a
tension and release. You will love this record. Songlist

| The
long-running success story that is the Acappella Company is based upon
immaculate production, strong original songwriting, and an unwavering
faith in the Creator. Produced by visionary Keith Lancaster, who wrote a
portion of the material (the rest written by the group themselves), the
four men of Acappella intrigue the ear with harmonies that can be
reminiscent of Crosby, Stills and Nash, or classic three-part triad. The
uptempo "Ready To Go" is stirring and jubilant, while
"Begins" has a descending progression and timely modulation
that is irresistibly catchy. The percolating bass, insistent refrain,
and recitation vocal of the title track, "All That I Need,"
drives the message home. Sonically, the mix is richly articulated and
defined, without an excess of gloss. Songlist

"Fellowshipping with one another as we're walking in the
light" is the opening couplet of the title track and spiritual
message of this 1988 recording. The beginning of the album sounds
exactly like the 'sound' we've come to expect from Keith Lancaster who
wrote all the songs but the three traditional tunes. Sweet harmonies on
top of an upbeat rhythm create an enjoyable contemporary spiritual sound
that is nicely juxtaposed with the traditional gospel tunes, "For
The Lost" and "View That Holy City." Just when we're
getting complacent, a driving sampled rhythm provides a feel of the most
contemporary rock a cappella. That's "Well On My Way." What a
production! The voices of Rodney Britt, Wayburn Dean, Gary Moyers and
George Pendergrass integrate so well it seems impossible to imagine any
other lineup even when we know change did come. Songlist

| t seems
important to this reviewer to follow the contributions of different
singers to the legacy of outstanding a cappella music which has
eventuated from Keith Lancaster. This recording was released in 1993 and
features the voices of Duane Adams, Wayburn Dean, George Pendegrass and
Gary Moyers (who is now president of the Ministries). All but two of
these inspirational songs were written by Keith who also produced the
album. It's a strong, rich, full recording with overdubbing aplenty to
create textures which vary from rock ("Only Truth") through
R&B ("Lead Me To Rest") into the jazz chord opening of
"Special Kind Of Love" and on through the light reggae sound
and rhythm of "Long Way To Go." Rhythms and rhymes alike all
point the listener toward the Lord. It's a wonderful ministry of song.

| Here we have a
1997 release by the most prolific musical ministry ever. Half of the
songs are written by that endless font of musical inspiration, Keith
Lancaster. Duane Adams who sang with the quartet is still writing and
has a couple of compositions in addition to collaborating with Keith on
the slow, profound and satisfying title track, "Act Of God."
The other members of the current band have made significant writing and
arranging contributions. They are Gary Moyers, Gary Miller, Kevin
Schaffer and Steve Reischl. The production is over the top!
Multi-tracking and some signal processing yields a complex texture to
all the songs whose tempo is definitely rock and the fullness of a large
choral group to the slower songs. We believe that our secular a cappella
fans should try this recording because, musically, it is a amazing piece
of work. Songlist

| The jubilant voices of the Acappella Company are amazingly prolific, having recorded dozens of albums through the years. Their inspirational themes are blended in a contemporary-meets-gospel style. "Carols" was released in 1993, and features the group performing all of the best-loved holiday gems: "O Holy Night, The First Noel," "Joy To The World" and "Silent Night," plus six more. While the production and arrangements are certainly not plain, by comparison to their original compositions, they are restrained. "Silent Night" retains the simplicity of this ubiquitous melody, but improvises upon it, adding warmth and depth with a resonant bass and perfectly-timed harmonic backing. You can't go wrong with this one! Listen to "Away In A Manger" in Real Audio.
|
| It's hard to
believe! Huh? What? It's hard to believe that the snare and drum on
"Do Not Be Afraid" are vocal. But it's sampling! Sampling
shmampling. To be unable to dispel the illusion of instruments, even
under headphones, is something special! We're talkin' audio trompe
l'oeil here folks. By the way, who is singing bass? That's one of the
deepest purist bass lines we've ever heard. Beyond a doubt the more
things change with Acappella, the more they stay the same - terrific!
There are songs which have arrangements so simple that the fine harmony
of four voices, without any studio trickery, carry the message and you
don't get distracted by the music. There is an addition of jazz chording
that expands the possibilities of the group in exciting directions.
Acappella just keeps getting better! Songlist

| Another two-for-one
re-release featuring 18 songs. The Acappella Company has created a
dynasty, and their recordings are always exceptionally well produced and
arranged. When they interpret a gospel tune or spiritual, however, they
absolutely shine. The versatility of the stylistic embellishments that
they routinely employ is amazing, and it's these nuances Ä a bar of
rhythmic counterpoint here, a half step swoop into a repeating phrase
there Ä that bring such lasting satisfaction. "Old Time
Gospel" is exactly that, while "Stamp of Approval" is
lifted straight from the Philly school of '70's soul; "There Is No
Excuse" is an midtempo raver that is part O'Jays and a little bit
urban too. Lots of goodies here.

| Acappella is
certainly not a newcomer to the contemporary Christian world of music.
This collection of 18 songs reflects twenty years of hard work and
devotion all for the love of music and an "Awesome God." With
each song you can imagine yourself as a child, or in a different part of
the world, by a campfire, or in a cathedral. Jungle Rhythms, chanting,
and haunting voices that echo the angels support the strong lead vocals
and blend perfectly. The eclectic arranging of "Classics Long
Play" keeps the listener interested and pleasantly entertained
throughout. "Coloring Song", "Via Dolorosa",
"Thy Word" and "Friends" are reasons alone to give
this CD a spin. Songlist

Brownsville, OR-based Contemporary Christian quartet AHG are four talented, dedicated young men, Konrad, bass, his brother David, baritone, Tom, lead, and Byran, tenor, who began singing together as "A Cappella Harmony Quartet" in 1995. They released the stellar CDs "Let Me Tell You 'Bout Heaven," "Upon This Truth" and "Hymns and Favorites" to acclaim; "Purpose" is AHQ's fourth release. We were particularly impressed by Byran's originals "Hit The Mark," "Strong," the title tune "Purpose" and his arrangement on "Stand In Awe Medley," Also excellent are Keith Lancaster's "Sweet Fellowship," Dottie Rambo's "When I Lift Up My Head" Ila Knight's "I'll Live Again," "Forgiven Says It All" and "And Can It Be," adapted for AHQ by David. | Reaping in the Spirit Brethren, We Have Met to Worship Roll Back The Stone Death Shall Not Destroy My Comfort Amazing Grace Angel Band Jesus Love is like a River Abide With Me Danny Boy You Are My Sunshine What Child is This? Silent Night Christmas Train We'll Soon Be Done |
OK, it's a funny name for a 3-man, 1-woman Bluegrass Gospel quartet, formed by 4 BYU students in 2003, but once we've heard these yummy harmonies and spirited tunes, we aren't likely to forget the name! From the color pictures scattered in the liner notes we see that these four are having a good time performing and spreading their ministry, dressing in blue jeans, non-matching shirts and t-shirts, and even in hillbilly hats and beards. The 15 songs, however, are as simple and powerful as any a cappella Bluegrass or Gospel we have ever heard. "Reaping in the Spirit," "Brethren, We Have Met to Worship," the title tune, "Death Shall Not Destroy My Comfort," the wonderful "Angel Band," "Jesus' Love is like a River," "Abide with Me," the traditional Christmas tunes "What Child is This," "Silent Night," the spiritual "Christmas Train," with lyrics by the group, and the traditional "We'll Soone Be Done" are Gospel favorites. Secular tunes like "Danny Boy," with guest artist Kristine Perry, "You are my Sunshine" and "I am a Man of Constant Sorrow" from the movie "O Brother, Where Art Thou" are also excellent. In addition to the gift of a thrilling and funny performance that won (against a very strong field of Regional winners) the 20th Annual Harmony Sweeps National Championship in San Rafael, CA, Chicago's talented all-male sextet Chapter 6 brought us a hot new CD! Happily, the three pieces that they performed at the finals, "Theme and Variations on 'It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got That Swing'" (which won for Best Original Arrangement), the hilarious 5-minute "Wizard of Oz," and even their encore performance (as Audience Favorite), "The 7th Wheel," which introduced us to the singing of their arranger, sometimes composer and sound engineer, Mark Grizzard. Grizzard also wrote the opening piece here, a fast-paced jazz number, "It's About Time." Rounding out the 11 songs are a nice Stevie Wonder cover, "Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing," the BeeGee's hit "How Deep Is Your Love," the Gospel song "God's Love," an uptempo "What A Wonderful World," the very funny "Lost In Canada," James Taylor's "Your Smiling Face" and the bluesy "I'll Take Care of You." We had another chance to be thrilled by a set from Chapter 6 at the recent 2002 Harmony Sweeps National Finals (which was amazing), and these seven good-looking young men from Illinois almost won it all! They actually won 3rd Place, but were a close second in the voting for audience favorite to Champion Perfect Gentlemen. An impressive live set: "Istanbul," "Overjoyed," the hilarious country song "Fat Lady," "I Wrote This Song," "Change In My Life," a very funny "cover" of Rockapella's "Folgers" ad, an equally funny ode to "Krispy Kreme" donuts, written while the group waited to perform at the Chicago Harmony Sweeps Regional, the beautiful "Come Unto Me" and "And They Praised God" (reminding us that we do list Chapter 6 under "Contemporary Christian"), the swing classic "Jump, Jive & Wail," "The Rootbeer Song," Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" (which wowed the crowd at the HS Finals), and closing with AWB's "Pick Up the Pieces." This CD captures Chapter 6's brilliant sense of humor, great stage presence, top-drawer vocal abilities and winning arrangements. Watch out for this group at next year's Finalsívery possibly walking off with the whole enchilada! Listen to "Krispy Kreme" in Real Audio.

Originating from Illinois's Millikin University, this male
contemporary sextet is exceptionally talented. A fresh blending of
voices with individual timbres give Chapter 6 a recognizable sound.
Using a colorful mixture for arrangements including Wham's "Wake Me Up
Before You Go Go" and Louis Prima's "Jump, Jive and Wail" they represent
their style and maturity. "She's All" is an R&B ballad that hits the
heart strings gently, while "The Root Beer Song", a Chapter 6 original,
dries your tears and leaves you smiling! A refreshing debut from a group
of young guys with great potential.

Keith Lancaster has built a very solid reputation as director of the various groups under the Acappella Ministries banner and now three of his children Melissa Lancaster, Kim Lancaster and Anthony Lancaster along with three others have formed the mixed group Durant. Innovative covers of three traditional tunes in the public domain, "All Creatures of Our God and King," begin the album, followed by the touching "Mercy's Arms," "God is Love," the lovely and familiar "Evening Prayer," "Open Thou My Soul," "Go With Me," one of our favorite hymns, "Be Still My Soul," and it finishes strongly with a pair of fine originals, "I Believe in Christ" and "Let The Words." Melodie (or Mel), Marty and Bonnie first got together as studio musicians in Nashville in the 1970s, "first call" on music producers' lists, a term that fit when they became a much-beloved Christian group. This is it! This is the 1988 album that saw a Christian rock group gain meteoric popularity in the a cappella field. Each of their prior albums had included one a cappella tune. It was an experiment to do an entire recording of them. Thank goodness! You might hear elements of Acappella, The Beach Boys, Yes and other virtuoso male vocal rock and popular rhythm groups but one aspect that distinctly differentiates Glad is the fact that they have classical elements in their music which gives them a wider palette of vocal textures and possibilities. You will always read reviewers use the terms rich and lush when describing the multi-layering of the Glad compositions. These terms are not exaggerated. If anything they are understated. Just listen to that vocal horn fanfare! Rich, lush, rich, lush, rich, lush. There! Listen to "Be Thou My Vision" in Real Audio.

Rich and lush. Did we say that yet? Well let's just get it out of the way, shall we. After the wonderful reception of the first all a cappella album by Glad, a follow-up was demanded by fans everywhere. Not only will you hear the popular, rock, and classical elements in all their glory but a distinct jazz element joins the repertoire which is a portent of things to come (A Cappella Gershwin). Just listen to Ed Nalle and Rob Neal's song "Sing It A Cappella" and you'll no doubt think of Take Six. Immediately following is the introduction to "Christ The Lord Is Risen Today," a wonderful classical/jazz hybrid. The whole recording is a marvelous mix of new material and arrangements of historical tradition, Charles Westley, Isac Watts, Matthew Bridges and even Theodulph of Orleans for real ancient history! Don't forget now, rich and lush! Listen to "Just As I Am" in Real Audio.

"The Solid Rock" starts the recording and is as rich and lush an arrangement as we have heard from the wonderful singers of Glad. Monophonic phrases gradually give way to polyphonic complexity. The voices spread from one note to multi-part harmony. Then we are treated to a gospel/jazz arrangement of "Tell It Like It Is." Because the style was pioneered by Take Six that is our best description of what it sounds like. "Your Love Broke Through" has a touch of percussion added to an arrangement that feels like a ballad. The percussion is marvelously inventive, and almost seems a shame that it's found on only one arrangement, but as a purist, this reviewer is just as glad. All in all, each of the ten songs are different musical views of the gospel field. They vary from the traditional song which builds to cascades of harmonies to jazz with R&B overtones. Once again we are blessed to have Glad in the a cappella field. Listen to "Tell It Like It Is" in Real Audio.

Lacking sufficient superlatives to merely rave, your trusty reviewer
will try to give a feeling of the musical arrangements applied to some
well known hymns, amidst a bevy of lesser-knowns. The beginning tune is
more than just worthy of attention, it rivets one's attention. The hymn
is Edward Shurtleff's "Lead On, O King Eternal." It was written in 1887
when his classmates of his seminary graduating class requested that he
compose an inspirational call to spiritual battle. Glad embellishes the
resulting hymn with an implication of vocal fanfare in the background,
four part harmonies, the use of jazz chording and builds to such a
crescendo that it is as inspiring as the composer would have ever
wished. That is just the first song! Among the fourteen songs are found
"Rock of Ages," "Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee" and "Fairest Lord Jesus."
They provide a rock of familiarity so that our spirits can soar into the
lesser known and still be anchored. An additional little bonus are the
notes which give brief histories of the songs. Great! Songlist Listen to "Immortal, Invisible" in Real Audio.

Following their success with "Worship and Praise," the Glad quartet have returned with ten more songs of inspiration in the contemporary Christian mode. As always, the production and arranging has a modern edge (several of the tracks feature rhythm samples), and, as on "God Is My Redeemer," invites comparisons to Take 6, with the multiple part stacked chords and vocal trills. The quieter ballads, such as "Oh God, My God," are elaborate pop, each melodic embellishment ascending ever higher; similarly, "Maker Of My Heart" weaves its progression with surging intensity and upward motion. The intelligently crafted songs of Glad are always performed with compelling sincerity. Listen to "Maker of My Heart" in Real Audio.

As one of the best-known and best-selling Contemporary Christian groups, the Glad quintet's tone is warm, full and open. With many arrangements by Bob Kauflin, and other gifted scribes such as Dave Maddux, the traditional holiday carol songlist is infused with added spirit. To a certain extent, as on "Joy to The World," the group re-writes the material, melodically and harmonically, so that it's tantamount to a new composition. Whether one approves of these liberties or not, one cannot argue the creativity, expertise and emotion that pervades everything they lay to tape. Listen to Starlight in Real Audio.

The contemporary Christian group Glad is one of the most
consistently popular groups of the genre. This "Collector's
Series," drawn from their eight-CD catalog, shows why: they've
developed their own readily-identifiable sound (multi-layered, complex,
big) and they do it really well. For example, "Doer of Your
Word" has the easy familiarity and sing-along refrain of a pop
song, but beyond the surface the arrangement and production is simply
stunning. Vocal trills, shifts of meter, countermelody upon
countermelody utilizing voice as instrument-this is their standard modus
operandi. Listening to the tracks over and over, one hears them
differently each time, as if studying the brushstrokes of a painting
individually. One new track, "Praise To The Lord" by John
Rutter, is an added bonus.

| Snooze Catch A Falling Star The All Day Song SkinnMarinkyDinkyDink Little Buckaroo You're My Little Girl You Are Mine Awake Sail Away Welcome To The World |
Since they have all married and some have become fathers, the members of one of our favorite Contemporary Christian groups, all-male a cappella trio Go Fish, have released some excellent material directed at their own and other children. "Splash," "Superstar" and the new DVD, "Showtime" are all winners, and "Snooze" is no exception. We were especially impressed with originals by group member Jamie Statema, who wrote the sweet title tune, "Little Buckaroo," "You Are Mine," "You're My Little Girl" and "Awake." We also liked the traditional "SkinnaMarinkyDinkyDink" and a pair of originals by Billy Sprague, "Sail Away" and "Welcome to the World." You can see the love here in the faces of the 3 dads, feel it in their voices as they sing these touching songs, and hear it in the lyrics. "You Are Mine" is a powerful lullabye, letting a child know that they are unconditionally loved and protected as they go to sleepa big improvement on the fairly scary concept of "If I should die before I wake." Great stuff especially for parents and children from Go Fish!

"Superstar" features 10 unforgetable tracks, some highlights are the up-tempo inspirational tune "Superstar," the spiritually uplifting title, "Lord, I Lift Your Name on High," a fresh, contemporary version of "Jesus Loves me." Also, the educational "Ten Commandment Boogie," and an old favorite that parents are sure to remember and kids are sure to love, "SkinnaMarinkyDinkyDink." The CD ends with a beautiful soothing ballad "Sail Away"...and no, its not the Enya song. If you're looking for fun wholesome family oriented music, check out Go Fish. In their mission to share the word of God with the world through their music, Contemporary Christian , Minnesota-based 3-man group Go Fish have brought us 3 excellent a cappella CDs, "More Than A Story," "Out of Breath" and "Part of the Proof. Some non-vocal percussion, synthesizer, etc. are there, but the message, the voices and the infectious original words and melodies are what stands out. 10 songs: "I've Got the Joy" makes you want to get up and boogie, "The B-I-B-L-E," "Alleluia," the rocking, joyful chorus ("Oh me, oh my") of "Big, Bad Billy," the sweet, inspirational "You Are Mine," "Planes, Phones and Microwaves," the wonderfully arranged "This Little Light of Mine," "Ladybug," "My Very Own Church" and the powerful "I'll Do My Best." Go Fish, their music and their ministry just keep getting better and more popular, and every cut on Splash! is an upbeat winner! Listen to " Planes, Phones and Microwaves" in Real Audio.

The four young men of Go Fish have a polished, tight and professional sound, and though they are contemporary Christian, with a lyrical emphasis on a message that can't be missed, they have much in common with Rockapella and the Blenders. Indeed, the Blenders' own Darren Rust mixed this CD, which includes half original compositions, as well as holiday perennials such as "Angels We Have Heard On High," "Silent Night," and "Away In The Manger," though, in the case of "Angels," the Go Fish version is a 90's dance-mix. Likewise, "Silent Night" is only recognizable by the words - the rhythm, melody and harmonization has been created anew. "More Than A Story" is a musical dramatization, with a newscaster's voiceover, telling the tale of the birth of Jesus. Includes drum and percussion accompaniment. Halogen is a 5-man Southern
Christian Contemporary a cappella group, singing together since 1995,
with a sound based on tight harmonies and remarkable vocal percussion.
Halogen took a distinctive stylistic step away from groups like Take 6
by taking advantage of both their classical training and the pop,
R&B, jazz, modern country, and gospel sounds they grew up with,
mixed with Greg McAmis' unique vocal percussion. Halogen performs all
styles of music, from spirituals to 50's pop and R&B, but their
original songs are their primary strength, from the Southern
Gospel-influenced favorite, "One Fine Day," to the quiet,
contemplative "I Find Rest," to the romantic, I Corinthians
13-inspired "Love Never Fails." There are 10 originals on
"Halogenesis" and one cover, the final tune "Were You
There." "I Believe," "We've Come to Worship,"
"And Jesus Stood," "Fly," "He Will Carry
You," "Fishers of Men"these are excellent, upbeat
songs of faith, and they are earning a strong grassroots following for
these five talented young men.

Well its six years after the Haven Quartet's release, Acappella, and there have been some changes in the ministry. The biggest is the outreach on the internet. For our listening purpose the Quartet's music is richer and more wonderful than ever. The heritage keeps maturing! Now the singers are Walt Harrah (who is also producer), Bill Cantos, Jeff Gunn and Randy Crenshaw. For fans of other varieties of a cappella music we have to say, yes, he's that Randy Crenshaw, whose singing on Vocal Nation and Just 4 Kicks has left quite a mark on our community. Now if you didn't know better you might suspect that you are listening to Acappella or Glad for, as you'll find in the recordings of those two groups, the complexity of harmony, meshing of voices and sophisticated production yields a sound that is both inspirational and esthetically delightful.

Falling from the heights of success as a radio personality, director of two Southern California radio stations and family man, to the drunken depths of despair and rootless dereliction, left Paul Meyers at the bottom. In agonized desperation he asked Jesus Christ for help and that moment in the early 1930s was the beginning of the Haven Of Rest Ministries. With his radio experience Paul created a radio program with a quartet, speaker, pipe organ, vibra harp and some poetry. The Haven Quartet are the descendants of this inspirational beginning. On this recording from 1991, you will hear the variety of harmonies usually associated with the four-square gospel singing traditions but the beautifully balanced voices of the quartet are so well matched that this recording is pleasurably reminiscent of the lush harmonies of Glad. The Haven Quartet's a cappella Christmas includes Bach's "Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring," "Silent Night," "Go Tell It On The Mountain" and the "Wexford Carol," among others. In other words, whether an Irish traditional, American spiritual or Alfred Burt carol, the common thread is the versatility of this Contemporary Christian group. "Mary, Did You Know" is revitalized, with a soulful lead by Randy Crenshaw, transforming it into an emotional pop ballad; the resonant "Noel! Noel!", augmented by a refrain played on recorder, and a lively renaissance country-dance rhythm, is joyful and festive. Each Haven member's voice possesses an attractive brilliance of tone, and the four voices together have an exceptional depth. Listen to " Lo, How a Rose" in Real Audio

Beautifully accompanied with a variety of instruments including
recorders and Uilleann pipes, this CD draws from a number of different
sources for it's material. "Good Christian Men, Rejoice," is a
fourteenth century carol; "I Wonder As I Wander," is an Appalachian
traditional with a contemporary vocal treatment, and a spoken
introduction about the birth of Jesus (called a "lesson," of which there
are six in total). There are also purely instrumental versions of "Jesu,
Joy of Man's Desiring," "O Little Town of Bethlehem," "Silent Night" and
"We Three Kings." In accordance with the holiness of the season, the
arrangements are restrained, the manner reverential. The Haven Quartet
reminds us of the purpose and significance of the holiday celebration.

Well Young contemporary Christian quintet from Washington state, who
obviously know their Motown soul. As such, they don't sound much like
fellow Christian groups like the AVB or Rescue; Heaven's Playground
place less emphasis on state-of-the-art production and multitracking,
and more on punchy rhythms and vertically structured harmonies. This is
within the context of songs such as "Sir Duke," "Fly Away" (written by
Cedric Dent), and the guitar-accompanied "Workin' For Da Man," which
should become a rockabilly cult classic very cool minor chord derived
harmonies give it the feel of genuine lament. The recitation intro of
"Have You Seen Her," along with the arrangement and even the stylistic
inflections, are an uncannily accurate rendering of 1960's doo-wop/soul.
The final track? That pillar of the barbershop pantheon, "Coney Island
Baby." These guys are fun.

Heaven Least I Can Do What Do You See Christ Arose There Through It All Star Spangled Banner Reaping The Spirit Talk About Suffering Amazing Grace I Have A Father Who Can |
A family group based in Lafollette, TN, the current group members are Lily, Ben, Sonya and Rebecca Isaacs and Rebecca's husband John Bowman. Traveling and singing together for over 30 years, they have a unique style that marries bluegrass music with gospel lyrics. Their concert venues have ranged from the Grand Ole Opry, to Carnegie Hall, and they have won multiple Bluegrass awards for Album of the Year and Gospel Recorded Performance of the Year. We particularly love the spirited original by David Marshall, "Don't You Want To Go To Heaven," three originals by Sonya, "Least I Can Do" (written with Ben Isaacs), the lovely "What Do You See" (sung to the baby Jesus), and "There Through It All" (written with her sister Rebecca); Joe Isaac's "Reaping In the Spirit," and James Hendrix' "I Have A Father Who Can." Covers of "The Star Spangled Banner," "Talk About Suffering" and "Amazing Grace" are fine and soulful. The deep Gospel feeling of these songs goes well with the Bluegrass harmonies, and the pure, simple a cappella voices. "Bluegrass" is the good, authentic stuff, one of the best a cappella Gospel CDs of the year!

It’s a musical Mission! Is there such a field of music as Mormon Gospel? There is now! Jason Smith, Ryan Hinton, Paul Hatch, Kimball Brown, Ben Haacke, and Lynn Haacke present a beautiful selection of Mormon religious music. While much of the music has the sound of four-square gospel or a traditional hymn feeling, occasionally the sweet perfection of the voices are enhanced by mixing a full choir behind their voices which creates the audible image of a huge organ filling a glorious cathedral. From the opening tune, "Joseph Smith’s First Prayer," to the finale "I Hope They Call Me on a Mission," you will be introduced to an entrancing spiritual music which is subtly different from more familiar gospel or spiritual traditions. It is both beautiful and fascinating.

The fifth excellent CD by multiple CARA-winners, 6-man Salt Lake City-based Mormon a cappella group Insideout is for kids, and is the second kids' CD by a Contemporary Christian group we've reviewed recently, the other is Go Fish's "Splash," which we also found delightful. 15 songs, "'Give' Said The Little Stream" features wonderful vocal percussion and fake synthesizer, and "Eensie Weensie Spider" is beautifully updated. "I'm Trying To Be Like Jesus," "I Feel My Savior's Love," "Never Tell a Lie," "When You Tell One Lie," and "Lullaby," an original by group member Kimball Brown, are especially good. "I Hope They Call Me On A Mission" and the short but sweet "Books in the Book of Mormon" are of special interest to Mormon kids. The CD concludes with the big fun "Popcorn Popping on the Apricot Tree" and "Once There Were Some Snowmen," a brilliant and unexpected parody tour-de-force. John Tesh is probably most recognized as the former co-host of TV's popular 'Entertainment Tonight.' Though he loved doing the show, it was a side track from his real love which is music... composing, performing, and producing. The John Tesh Project is that aspect of his varied musical talents in which John plays the role of Executive Producer. In this case he also helps produce this wonderful choir of professional singers assembled by Carmen Twillie who is the choir's director and vocal arranger. Twenty seven inspired singers make up a stunning choir. Obviously we can't credit all the singers here but, for example, one tenor, whose name will be familiar to the a capppella world, is Randy Crenshaw. You will be treated to fourteen gospel tunes of great familiarity to afictionados of this field of music. To entice those who wish introduction to such classic inspirational singing, fresh arrangements of 'Rock Of Ages,' 'Come By Here (Kum Ba Ya),' 'Amazing Grace,' and 'The Battle Hymn of the Republic' will provide anchors of familiarity. The sessions were recorded in pure digital format so, although there is a large vocal group present on each song, you feel as if you can hear each and every voice.

"Encores" is all about spirituals: "Walk in Jerusalem Just Like John," "Now Don't You Let Nobody Turn You 'Round," "Good News, Chariot's A-Comin'," "(If We Ever Needed the Lord Before) We Sure Do Need Him Now," "There's A New Name In Glory," "Children Keep In the Middle of the Road"… this is inspirational Gospel sung with some of the best deep-bass harmonies we've heard. No Better Cause is an award-winning pop/soul/funk vocal band from Lincoln, Nebraska. These 5 young men use nothing but their voices to create a full, rich sound on this collection of Gospel, Spirituals and Contemporary Christian tunes. NBC's strong vocal percussion and cutting-edge arrangements are clear on cuts like "Ride The Chariot," "Shut De Do," very funky takes on the spiritual "Wade in the Water" and "Joshua Fit The Battle of Jericho," "Awesome God," the finger-popping "Oh Happy Day," "Immeasurable," "Shine Down," and "Goin' Up A Yonder." Their soulful side comes through equally strongly on "People Get Ready," the title tune, the inspirational hymn "It is Well With My Soul," "I Want Jesus to Walk With Me" and a beautifully arranged "Doxology." We like No Better Cause's energy, sweet harmonies and their spirited mix of driving, rhythmic pieces with slower, soulful hymns. No Limits is a South African Contemporary Christian mixed septet, who bring us 16 mostly original songs on "Dare to Dream," their debut release from 2004. Most of the songs are written and/or arranged by group member Kgomotso Moshugi. Some songs are accompanied, but all have the fresh, rhythmic, harmonic sound we love from groups like Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Moshugi originals like "Working in the Fields," "In My Dreams," "Shed Your Light," the anthem against AIDS, "Long as We Stand Together," "Nako e sile," "Sing Unto the Lord," "Sheba o bone," "Akekh' ofana nawe" and "The Lord my Provider" are very fine. Also favorites are Moshugi-arranged traditionals like "Mhlobo wami" "Puleng" and "In A Little While." We love the joyous sound of this album, the pure celebration of it, the strong, confident leads and supporting harmonies. We'd love to tell you more about the group, but going to their website address strangely takes us to "No Limits Sports Supplements" from Pretoria. Since we were first blown away by seven-man Contemporary Christian a cappella group Naturally Seven (then simply called Seven) at their win at the 1999 Harmony Sweeps Finals, they have released some very special recordings, "Non Fiction," "Live in Berlin," "What Is It?" and "Christmas A Love Story." "Ready II Fly" is a cut above even those winners, 18 stunning songs that make us look for the "all sounds made by the human voice" disclaimer, and we of course find it. Naturally 7's Christian ministry has tremendous depth and feeling, but what we especially appreciate here is songs like "I Can't Doo Dat," which addresses the issue of women fans approaching these beautiful black men for sex after a concert; "True Friends (and Family)" that speaks to their importance and of acting with integrity; "Cool," which sings of the impressive power of having God in one's life; and "Forever For You" which celebrates the concept of an endless love, for God and one's partner. Lyrically, this is powerful stuffI think of it as life-changing wisdom being passed on by the ultimate musical role models. "Can You Feel It," "Open Your Eyes," "Feel It in the Air Tonight," "Fly Baby," "Let It Rain"these are some of the best, most cutting-edge a cappella cuts we have ever heard. The first recording from the 1999 Harmony Sweepstakes winners, who enthralled the audience will their radiant countenances and joyful energy. These young singers from New York, though having performed as a unit for only a few short months, displayed an impressive maturity and sophistication. Their gospel background has been good preparation for the brilliant rainbow of tonalities that characterize their technically ambitious, yet passionate approach. The original compositions were written by the group; they also write their own arrangements. With seven voices, they have a palette to choose from that is deep, intense and brilliant. Definitely influenced by Take 6 (their rendition of 'Bless This House' attests to this), their sound is more urbanized, funkier, immediate, as heard on the vocal percussion driven 'Train.' Lyrically, 'Non-Fiction' espouses themes of salvation and redemption, but songs such as 'Last Days,' and their incredible interpretation of 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' require no affiliation, aside from a love of captivating harmony. There are no pictures of them, or any informationthe focus being on the Christian message and the music. To make this all the more clear, there are 3 readings from the Book of Psalms interspersed among the songs. There are 18 songs, hymns of praise and worship, sung with deep feeling and in beautiful harmony by these four young men. From "How Great Thou Art Medley," "Holy, Holy, Holy" and "Glorify Thy Name" to "I Stand In Awe," "What A Mighty God We Serve Medley" and "Days of Elijah," these inspirational hymns are consistently fine. An impressive, heartfelt first CD from onevoice!

The three Guyer brothers, Derek, Joel and Warren are joined by Myron Whittlesey and guest vocalists Kylene Crabb and cousin Layne Guyer on "In Hope," onevoice's second CD. The Bowling Green, KY-based group's first, the powerful "In Praise and Worship," garnered a lot of attention for its deep feeling, beautiful harmony and strong Christian message, and "In Hope" continues on this bright path, focussing on the Bible's view on death and hope. 25 songs, beginning with "In That Great Getting' Up Morning Medley" and "I Am A Poor Wayfaring Stranger," and continuing into a series of narrations from the Bible about the Resurrection and life after death, "illustrated" by hymns and spirituals like "Sheltered In The Arms Of God," "There Is A Habitation," "Do Lord Medley," "When We All Get To Heaven" and "Beautiful Isle;" and original music based on quotes from the Bible like "I Thessalonians 4:13-18," "Hebrews 4:8-11a" and "Luke 15:11-32." Other interspersed Contemporary Christian songs like Dottie Rambo's "We Shall Behold Him," Vince Gill's "Go Rest High On That Mountain," Ken Young's "Enter In," Twila Paris' "We Shall Assemble" Ken Young's "Son Of Man" and Ray Boltz' "There Stood A Lamb" perfectly illustrate the spoken words. Filled with their trademark smooth, rich harmonies, "In Hope" is another impressive testament of faith from onevoice.

Another fantastic acappella band to come from Minnesota. Must be something in the water! A sextet of young men with incredible voices and a great talent for writing songs that the masses are sure to like. Haunting yet soothing, these songs might cause a few tears to fall with harmonies so intricate and complex, yet they make it sound so natural and easy. From echoing cathedrals, to stormy seas, holy cities, and falling rain, each song takes you to a different place and their voices are the vehicle that take you there! We have faith that you will absolutely enjoy what these young men have to sing!

Every now and then there is a recording of such exciting musical
originality that it should transcend the boundaries of a "genre
audience." If you love gospel/spiritual music, this is for you. If you
love original, wonderful music, this is for you! A beautiful alto, three
tenors, baritone and bass voices must have been inspired to create such
music. You'll hear a bit of tradition, a bit of techno, a bit of
country, a bit of James Brown, and a bit of a Bobby McFerrin sort of
sound which all combine to make an excitingly original sound. Some folks
sing about joy. These singers are a joy!

Poor Baker's Dozen is Jeff Zupfer, Tenor, Chris Heng, Bass, Kendal Marsh, Baritone, Jeremiah Gamble, Tenor, David Olson, Tenor and Jon Olson, Alto, and they are a cutting-edge Contemporary Christian group from St. Paul, Minnesota. 'Go Stop Go' is their 3rd CD, and we have been impressed with them since the first! This is all original music, most by Jeremiah but some by Jon and Jeff. All the songs are powerful, but we particularly liked 'The Wind,' 'Send Your Rain,' 'Cry,' 'Get On Board,' and the first cut, 'Listen.' The 12-page liner notes are among the most beautiful and extensive we've seen. Great stuff!

An inspired quartet from
the Bahamas creates a wide ranging musical basis for their musical
ministry. You have to call them contemporary but you'll find rap, soul,
doo-wop, rock 'n roll, island rhythms and vocal elements, and
traditional Gospel. Just when you say to yourself, "that sounds
like Acappella," you have to revise that because the next tune may
have such Caribbean vocal percussion you could swear that Vocal Sampling
had sat in on the cut. In the medley of traditional Gospel tunes you'll
be reminded of the Pindar family. In short, this is a unique new group
which is a ministry but should also inspire those who love world
music.

Velvet: a rich fabric. The harmonies of Regeneration: sumptuous, angelic outpourings of rejoicing, of which velvet is a most fitting adjective. Carrying on in the mode established by the best-selling "Christmas In Velvet" volumes one and two, the fourteen traditionals and hymns contained here (ten of which were released a few years ago in a now out-of-print recording entitled"Pure Silk"), are inspiring not only because of their thematic content of praise, but because of the arranging of Derric Johnson, the group's director. To study a Derric Johnson arrangement is to contemplate the canon of a master. Key to his style is his seamless blending of classical choral and jazz idioms that are fresh, yet easy to assimilate. What could be more uplifting than the gloriously ascending intervals of "More Than Wonderful," ending in an epic high note? The serene and resonant "Holy Ground" is set against a backdrop of plush oohs and aahs. The countermelodic texture of "Just As I Am" is engaging but never excessive. The men and women of Regeneration (some of whom moonlight as Walt Disney World's "Voices of Liberty"), could not be more pristine in their performance. Their control, phrasing and interpretation is textbook perfect. All in all, "Hymns in Velvet" is an exercise of pure enjoyment.

Famous 1991 release by Derric Johnson, esteemed director of the Voices of Liberty. Many of the arrangements are also his, and can be recognized by their dramatic codas and lofty soprano range. There are many familiar carols, such as "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," "O Come All Ye Faithful" and "Little Drummer Boy," just to name a few - 26 tracks in all. With that kind of variety, there is something for everyone: "Sweet Little Jesus Boy," a spiritual; "Calypso Noel," with that island rhythm; "Pat-A-Pan," in the French classical vein. "Gesu Bambino" is one of the prettiest songs, a distinctive melody, coupled with an easy waltz tempo. Listen to "Do You Hear What I Hear" or "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen"

Follow-up to previous release by the Regeneration troupe. As on Volume I and II, Derric Johnson's voice-orchestra performs sensational arrangements of carols such as "Joy To The World," "Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town" and "Deck The Halls." Particularly lovely is "Carol Of The Russian Children/The Sleigh," popularized by the Singers Unlimited. Listen to "Carol of the Bells" and "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" in Real Audio.

From the first reverberant sound of "Lead Kindly Light," there is no doubt why Reprise was named the 2001 International Collegiate Barbershop Champions- they know their stuff! With Reprise's busy schedule, including a tour with the Brigham Young Universi1ty Singers to Africa, they have made quite a name for themselves. Finally we get a taste of their original intent of forming their quartet, sharing their love for sacred music with the masses. Each arrangement is beautifully crafted, many written by members of the group or by faculty of BYU, to fit their specific voices. Each song speaks to not only someone who loves sacred hymns, but also to those who appreciate the dissonant sound of gorgeous barbershop singing. Some favorites include "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing," "Praise the Lord, the Almighty," and "The Lords Prayer." Listen to Alleluia in Real Audio.

| Unleashed I Cry Before The Throne Please Come Somebody's Watchin' How Great Love The Lord For You Grace I Love You Lord Percussion: Articulated |
Formed in 1996, Gresham, OR-based Contemporary Christian male quartet Rescue dedicated themselves to a ministry of learning, writing and performing a cappella songs. Now, 6 excellent CDs and one live DVD in the PAC catalog, and a whole lot of wonderful live performances later, "Before the Throne" shows just how well these talented, deeply spiritual men have fulfilled their commitment. "Before" has 10 richly-harmonic songs that feature state-of-the-art vocal percussion by group members Brandon, Jason and Steve, and some of the best faux trumpet (actually, it sounds like a whole trumpet section) we've heard on the title tune and "Somebody's Watchin'." Other favorites are an original by group member Brian Sell, "I Cry," "Unleashed" by Wm. Barfield and Scott Krippayne (with added lyrics by Brian and Jason), Nicole Nordeman's lovely "Please Come," "How Great" by Ed Cash (a live cut that features audience call and response), Chris Tomlin and James Reeves; Lincoln Brewster's "Love the Lord," Nathan Arnold' "Grace" and Laurie Klein's gorgeous "I Love You, Lord." A welcome surprise is the 11th "tune," a tour-de-force beatbox talk and demonstration by Brandon Bell. Powerful and beautiful - another winner from Rescue!

Facile Contemporary Christian pop, turned out with absolute precision and sincerity. Occupying a niche somewhere between Acappella and Go Fish, this male quartet shares the same knack for constructing solid melodies and flowing progressions. "You Are There" and "Quiet, Quiet" are reflective ballads, whereas "The Way, The Truth, The Life" simmers along with a slapped vocal bass and subtle fingersnaps; many of the songs have vocal percussion, but it's low profile. The arrangements are detailed and complex, creating a richly dimensional and spacious feeling. The group's intonation and timing, which must be innately mastered for these challenging arrangements to work, is just that. Listen to "The Way, The Truth, The Life" in Real Audio.

Seven-track EP, released in 1999. Simple ballads, such as the title
track (also the group's name, must be the theme) and "Amazing Grace" set
a reverent tone of obeisance. The percussive "Kum-Bah-Yah," at under a
minute in length, is less a song than an interlude, but it and "Obey
Him" show the quartet in light rock mode. Skillfully produced and
arranged, their sound is full and reverberant, but allows enough room
(and silence) for the songs to breathe. Songlist

"The Difference" is Gresham, Oregon-based Rescue's 4th CD, and their best yet. One major difference is the introduction of a fifth male voice, bass/vocal Percussion expert Tim Storms, who has added tremendous depth to Rescue's all a cappella sound. What has returned is Rescue's powerful original material and arrangements--some of the strongest lyrics about their personal commitment to and love for Jesus we've heard. 10 songs: "So Excited," the title tune, "When the Chariot Comes" and "Come As You Are"our two favorites, "From the Beginning," the deeply personal "Darkest Hour," "Whatever is True," "I Choose You," "So Subtly" and "The Lord's Prayer." A full, rich, soulful sound, perfect intonation, top-drawer arranging, lyrics that are pure poetry - it all makes "The Difference" one of the best Contemporary Christian CDs we've heard. Recommended. From Nebraska and the reflective quietness of the center of the
country has emerged a young quintet of Christian creators whom we will
place in the exalted company of Glad, Acappella and the Haven
Quartet. The rich harmonic overtones of the five male voices carry a
similar message by an equally beautiful means. All the songs are either
originals written by Todd Boesiger or arranged by his brother Wayne (who
also wrote one of the originals). Over half of the songs are quietly
reflective, which allows them to become a showcase for the grand
harmonies. The others approach a sound similar to the rock groups for
whom the vocals were primary, groups like Yes. There is one song on
which Todd does a wonderful vocal percussion track and one on which he
accompanies himself on piano. Be sure not to miss the moving arrangement
of "The Lords Prayer."

Rock I Just Want to Celebrate Thank You It's Alright God of Hope and Love The Only Way We Sing Holy I Need You Broken Heart Think About His Love Show Me Your Ways Amazing Love (You are my King) |
We have just
enjoyed a wonderful performance by all-male Contemporary Christian
quintet Sweet Deliverance at the '08 Harmony Sweeps Bay Area Regional,
which earned them a very close 2nd place finish (to winner Where's
Gesualdo?). "You're My Rock" includes 8 originals by the
group, Bass Bob Allsup collaborating with 1st tenor Kevin Percival on
the title tune, the Beach Boys-inspired "Thank You," the
rocking "It's Alright," the inspirational "God of Hope
and Love" and "The Only Way," the foot-tapper "We
Sing Holy," the testifying "I Need You." Allsup gets
together with tenor Gary Ferguson on the final original, the touching
"Broken Heart," before finishing with a very fine 3-song
medley, Walt Harrah's "Think About His Love," Russell Fragar's
"Show Me Your Ways" and Billy James Foote's "Amazing
Love" (You are My King). Every one of these songs uplifts and
celebrates the faith of these talented singers, especially their
excellent original material. Treat yourself to "You're My

"Sweet Sweet Spirit" is one of the first recordings, from
1990, by male Contemporary Christian quartet Sweet Deliverance, issued
by their own company, Sweet Deliverance Ministries. Later albums were
recorded with Keith Lancaster's Acappella Company. The group is now a
sextet based in the San Francisco bay area, which received a very strong
ovation from the audience at the 2008 Harmony Sweeps Bay Area Regional,
where they placed second. But "Sweet Sweet Spirit," although a
wonderfully harmonic collection of 10 songs, gives us very little
information on the liner notes or the group's website, about who wrote
and compose the songs, for instance. As the group is known for its
beautiful group-written and composed material, we will assume that some
of these songs are originals, but there are many very nice covers here
also: Elisha Hoffman's "Are You Washed In The Blood," Randy
Simpson's "Had It Not Been," the Gospel standard "I've
Been Changed," "Swing Down Sweet Chariot," the
traditional hymn "When The Roll is Called Up Yonder," Goodman
and Davis' "Wouldn't Take Nothin' for My Journey," and Doris
Akers' title tune. Thus, the tunes "This Man" and "Just A
Little While" might be written by group members such as Bob Allsup
and Kevin Percival. But the bottom line is, "Sweet Sweet
Spirit" is a beautiful, heartfelt early collection by a group that
has since released 7 excellent albums and grown in their ministry to
join the elite Contemporary Christian groups, and become one of our
personal favorites!

|
"Take His Hand" is more good stuff from this
sweet-harmonizing male a cappella quartet, part of the ministry of Keith
Lancaster's amazing, prolific Acappella Company. These 10 songs are all
originals written and composed by group members. Bob Allsup contributes
the very nice title tune, "Read the Writings," "Don't
Hesitate" and "Talk to Me." Kevin Percival writes the
foot-tapping "Phillip's Song," "Is it Me Lord,"
"Walking the Way," "Simon's Lament" and "Hear
Our Prayer," and Gary Ferguson gives us "The Man On The
Mountain." These are all wonderfully creative, thought-provoking
songs that illumine and enrich the Christian experience. Beautifully
sung and inspirational!

Another winner from Sweet Deliverance! What we especially like about
this sweet-harmonizing Contemporary Christian group is the fact that
they write, compose and arrange almost all of their tunes. These 12
songs, for instance, feature the thought-provoking "Defending Your
Life" by Bob Allsup and Gary Ferguson, "Praisin' the
Lord" and "Let It Flow" by Allsup and Russ Wooten,
"Jesus is Trying to Tell You Something," "I Gotta
Feeling" and "Only Son" are by Allsup individually. Kevin
Percival writes "He Shows Me Everything," "You'll Save
His Name," and "Useless Hammer;" and Russ Wooten writes
"Back to the Bible." Upbeat, inspirational, highly creative
stuff heretap your feel to a joyous song like "I Gotta
Feelin'," then be touched by the deep faith found in "You'll
Say His Name." "Let It Flow" is a winner from beginning
to end.

The
musical ministry of Keith Lancaster's Acappella Company continues with
the Contemporary Christian male a cappella quartet Sweet Deliverance.
Included in our favorites of these 10 songs are originals by group
members Bob Allsup, "I'm Here to Tell You," "No
Condemnation," "You Need Love;" and with Russ Wooten
"Only You are God" and "Move Over," and with Gary
Ferguson, "Defending Your Life." Kevin Percival writes and
composes the lovely "Father Please," and "He Made His Own
Mountain." One other favorite we haven't heard is Steven Chapman
and Geoff Moore's thought-provoking "Home Run." Very good new
material, beautifully sung by talented Sweet Deliverance!

|
From the first strains of the opening cut, "When I
Lift Up My Head," we know that this Kansas-based all-male Christian
Barbershop quartet is something very special. 10 beautifully-crafted,
inspirational songs, from "Sabbath Prayer," the touching
"Joseph's Song," "Great Getting' Up Mornin'/Good News
Medley," "Let There Be Peace On Earth" (sung with Sweet
Adelines group "Zing"), and "Sweet Hour of Prayer"
up to the final cut "May There Be Peace On Earth This
Christmas." "Rejoice" is a feel-good, deeply spiritual
winner for soulful 12th Street Rag.

Join 2 Sing is a vocal a cappella collection by Jeremiah Savage and Nathanael Vossler. By dubbing layers of voice, they have created a professional arrangement of rich chords and blended harmonies in each song. Join 2 Sing is the first CD released by 2Praise. It began as an experiment with recording and dubbing vocals, but quickly evolved into a more ambitious project, due to the interest and encouragement of those who listened. This excellent CD features many original songs as well as re-arranged hymns that the whole family can enjoy. Listen to "Child Of The Great I Am" in Real Audio.

All male sextet Take 6, one of the most innovative and influential Contemporary Christian a cappella groups of all time, was formed at Oakwood College in Alabama in the early 1980s. In 1988 they released "Take 6" nationally, and won Grammies for both best Jazz and best Gospel group. After 9 groundbreaking, critically acclaimed releases, this long-awaited recording, aptly named "the standard," returns to those jazz roots, covering standards like "Sweet Georgia Brown," "Straighten Up and Fly Right" (featuring George Benson), the scattish "Seven Steps to Heaven" (featuring Jon Hendricks, Al Jarreau and Till Bronner), the moody a cappella "Windmills of Your Mind," "Someone To Watch Over Me," "A Tisket A Tasket" (featuring a sample of the original recording by Ella Fitzgerald), the whimsical "Bein' Green" (with an unexpected Obama plug at the end), the a cappella "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans" (featuring Aaron Neville and some great faux horns), and a jazzy a cappella cover of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" (featuring Brian McNight). Take 6's Contemporary Christian material is also included, the autobiographical "Back to You," a bluenote a cappella "Shall We Gather at the River" and the lovely, wordless, accompanied "Grace." Wow. This recording sets "the standard" for Vocal Jazz/Contemporary Christian CD of the year. Don't miss this one, it's a soulful treat from beginning to end!

"Feels Good," their 12th CD, the versatile sextet has broken down barriers between the musical genres of Jazz, Gospel and Soul and built a massive, broad-based group of devoted fans. An accompanied album, "Join the Band" and 1997's "Brothers" both won Grammies. After 20 years with Warner Bros., their final release was "Beautiful World," an album of accompanied re-interpreted pop/soul classics. But in 2006 the group returned to their a cappella and gospel (at least in subject matter) roots with the release of "Feels Good," forming their own label, "Take 6 Records," in the process. The group is poised, tight and energized, breezing through their strongest set, of mostly original material, since their first head-turning releases in 1988 and 1990. Thomas's joyous "Come On" sets the tone, and Mark Kibble's title tune, Dent and Kibble's "Family of Love," the powerful, profound "Lamb of God," the smooth, rhythmic "More Than Ever," the surprising, re-invented cover of "Just In Time," and McKnight's R&B/Pop gem "Set U Free" keeps the party going. The usual perfect harmonies, strong group songwriting (and outside song selection) and arrangements, and Take 6's return to that good old a cappella all left us with a big smile on our face, like we got when we first heard "Spread Love" back in '88. Welcome back, guys, and bless you! Listen to Feels Good and Come On in Real Audio

Not just a cappella fans but the whole musical world perked up their ears when six young singers transformed the gospel world with their jazz arrangements. The beautiful harmonies and sophisticated arrangements immediately set a standard which has been endlessly copied ever since. Within a single song can frequently be found elements of jazz, soul, rock and R&B on a gospel base. It is no wonder that these singers were tapped to be the winners of two Grammy Awards for their first recording! It is a must for any a cappella collection! Remember this was 1988 and they set the standard by which other great harmony groups such as Boyz II Men were measured and continue to be so judged. Well it was inevitable that any group as talented as Take Six would
constantly expand their horizons. "Join The Band" features
electronically synthesized orchestration with drum machines and the
occasional saxophone in beautiful arrangements. To satisfy the ear of
the a cappella listener there is "My Friend" sung with Ray
Charles (yes, The Ray Charles), and two more, including the poignantly
beautiful "Lullaby". Even if you consider yourself an a
cappella purist and feel that instruments tend to obscure the goal of
perfect harmony, as this reviewer does, this recording transcends that
petty perspective and is a must for any collection. Songlist

Released at the same time as "A capella from the Soul," "Conectate" includes many of those songs, sung in Spanish. Unidivided is a Southern California a cappella male sextet first formed in the spring of 2001, whose wide range of musical influences include Latin, Gospel, Contemporary Christian, Reggae, Pop, Jazz, R&B and Rock. We first were blown away by the group's distinctive style at the 2003 National Finals, where their arrangement of "Amazing Grace" drew a huge ovation from the audience. Their recent accomplishments include 2 CARA award nominations and another win at the 2005 LA Sweeps Regional, bringing them to San Rafael for the 2005 Finals. "From The Soul" is basically a Gospel CD, but it begins with the showy, funky "Jamappella," with fake horns, classical samples and a pure, sweet whistled melody line as powerful as that in any spaghetti western. "Lord I Lift Your Name On High" is a joyous reggae gospel tune that had us boogying in the aisles. "When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder" would hardly be recognized by its composer, with vocal percussion, "trumpet" solo and funky arrangement that turn the song into a celebratory romp. "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" appears twice, first as a jazzy, bluenote harmonic feast, and at the end of the CD with added vocal percussion. "I Wanna Change," "Nao Ha Deus Tao Grande Como Tu," "Amazing Grace," "Es Jesus" and "What's Going On" complete the songlist. A surprising, upbeat debut CD from one of the most dynamic and innovative Contemporary Christian groups we've heard!

The Vocal
Union is back with their second recording. Because the 1999 group's
line-up has only one member still singing with them who is on this
recording (Gary Miller), we'll take the time to mention their names.
Along with Gary are Keith Lancaster, Gary Moyers, Gary Miller, John
Laws, Roy Hawkins, Darin Cochran, Robert Orr and Paul Kennamer Jr. As in
the first Vocal Union recording the group sticks close to its Southern
Gospel roots, using close harmony and traditional "old time"
singing. Eight voices give the music its choral fullness, rather than
overdubbing or studio techniques. In fact, it isn't until the last song
that Keith Lancaster breaks down and adds just a bit of his
"sound" to the mix. By no means does this mean the songs are
sedate. Though four square is in evidence, there are touches of doo-wop
sneaking in occasionally, along with a bluegrass element. Songlist

There has
never been so prolific a musical ministry as the many branches of the
tree which Keith Lancaster planted with the creation of the Acappella
Company. in this third grouping of voices and spirits which comprise The
Vocal Union, only Gary Miller is the constant, having participated in
the creation of all three recordings. His presence on this one is
ubiquitous as a writer of music and lyrics, in engineering, and doing
the final mix. The rest of the vocal line-up is Bruce Coleson, Allen
Krehbiel, Steve Camping, Brian Wiersma, Michael Forehand, Ryan Thomas,
with additional vocals by Rob Williams. The recording is Christian a
cappella in all its contemporary upbeat manifestations. There are jazz
riffs, doo-wop and the sound which seems to be a hallmark of the
Acappella Company, strong downbeats, sweet complex harmonies, and rich
multi layered production. There is even a song which is perfect for
jitterbugging, "Wish I'd Seen It." The youthful exuberance of the
singers who join Gary is expressed in a joyous, toe tapping production
with just enough sweet solemnity that you don't get totally lost in the
music to the detriment of the message. It must be said that bearing
witness musically is one of the most attractive forms of ministry to be
found. Songlist

Seven-man Southern Gospel ensemble The Vocal Union is the third offspring of Paris, TN's Acappella Ministries; the first being the A Cappella Company, created by Keith Lancaster, who is Executive Producer of "All Around Me." From "Get Ready," the first song by these talented, spiritual men, we feel the power of their music and their ministry. This is the best of Contemporary Christian a cappella: strong, innovative vocal percussion, soaring Rockapella-like backup vocals, rich, deep bass harmonies, strong original lyrics, music and arrangementsit's easy to see how "Once Upon A Tree" won the 2001 CASA Religious Album of the Year. It's hard to pick favorites from these 12, because there's not a weak cut on the CD. "Livin Love," "I Wanna Love You," "We've Got This Groove" (they do, and we can feel it!), "Heaven's Irony," "Rise and Walk,' "To See Jesus," "Do You Believe," "This Is Love" and the final cut, "What Heavenly Music." "All Around Me" is VU's 5th CD, and it is another finely-crafted, joyous winner.

The Utah-based, all-male contemporary sextet Voice Male has displayed their versatility in releasing 6 excellent CDs in their first six years together, and tours of the US and Europe have invited comparisons with groups like Rockapella and the House Jacks. "Hymns II" shows us another side of Voice Male, their deeply-felt spirituality. 12 simple, powerful hymns are here, shining in the pure, clean harmonies of these six men. "The Spirit of God," "Lead, Kindly Light," "Our Savior's Love," "How Firm A Foundation," "Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus," "There Is A Green Hill Far Away," "Be Still My Soul," "Jesus, The Very Thought Of Thee"Ñthese are hymns simple and pure, not arranged to death, and with no vocal percussion. With a rich blend of contemporary and barbershop influences, Voice Male brings us "Hims," a collection of 10 soothing ballads, primarily sacred in nature. The crisp sounding harmonies and flowing melodies of each song showcase the talent and dynamic range of each singer and the group as a whole. "The Prayer of the Children," is a warm and powerful display of spiritually uplifting music. The harmonies of "The Lord's Prayer" are intricate and tranquil. An additional treat is Kirby Shawís arrangement of "The Star Spangled Banner," as they present their patriotism through their vibrant sound. An even bigger surprise is the added beautiful voice of a female vocalist, Jill Bearden, in "A Child's Prayer." Listen to The Lord's Prayer in Real Audio

| Amazing Grace/ Grace Greater Than Our Sin Beyond The Sunset/ Sunrise Tomorrow Steal Away Shadrach He Never Sleeps Give Me Jesus He Never Said A Mumblin' Word Over The Sunset And Mountains Ezekiel Saw The Wheel Love Sweet Hour Of Prayer/ There's A Garden/ Tell It To Jesus How Great Thou Art I Just Feel Like Something Good Is About To Happen Ivory Palaces The Lord's Prayer Go Tell It On The Mountain Only Jesus Can Satisfy Your Soul Whispering Hope Joshua Fit De Battle Of Jericho I Know A Name May The Road Rise Up To Meet You |
As directed by Derric Johnson, his Vocal Orchestra sings twenty-five hymns, from the classic ("Amazing Grace," "The Lord's Prayer"), the traditional ("Ezekiel Saw The Wheel," "Go Tell It On The Mountain," "Joshua Fit The Battle Of Jericho") to the lesser-known ("I Just Feel Like Something Good Is About To Happen" and "Ivory Palaces"). Each inspirational rendering is beautifully and sensitively performed by this mixed ensemble. The vocal quality and tonal purity is ideal, and the group also knows when to dramatize a reading, as they do on "Shadrach," in a dazzling exhibition of showmanship. The arrangements are multi-textured and bold, but not pretentious or excessive. The group appears regularly as "Voices Of Liberty" at Disney World, and their professionalism is apparent.

"What a Friend" features a selection of hymns and gospel songs that come directly out of the hymn books that have been central in the worship experience of congregations for generations. The five young men of Virginia-based Voice of Praise bring us these timeless songs, fresh and newly-arranged and sung in their distinctive male voice harmony. 14 songs, "Rejoice, All Peoples," "Jesus, Thou Joy of Loving Hearts," "Jesus, Keep Me Near The Cross," "In The Rifted Rock," "Lord Jesus, Think On Me"… we haven't heard many of these songs, but they are nonetheless familiar. Others, like "Breathe On Me, Breath of God," "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and "Crown Him With Many Crowns," we have heard and sung, but we hear them with new ears. This is the seventh CD by Voice of Praise, and, as all the others, it is heartfelt, beautifully sung and lovely!

Two of these six groups, The Standards and Eclipse, have won awards on the stage of the Harmony Sweeps Finals--and The Knudsen Brothers won it all in 1990. The Standards' "Brown Eyed Girl," "I Can't Break Away" and 'Til I Found You;" Eclipse's "Think Twice," "Hard Times Come No More" and "Through It All;" and the Knudsen's "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "Blue Suede Shoes/Hound Dog" Presley medley are some of our favorites on this excellent compilation. 7-man Gospel group from Mesa, AZ, 259's "Jericho" and "Nearer My God to Thee" are very fine, as is Barbershop/Gospel quartet Reprise's "Because I Have Been Given Much" and "I've Been Workin' on the Railroad." Contemporary Gospel mixed quintet Shine's "My Jesus I Love Thee" completes our favorites, and we have to say that we love to see a collection like this. The Spotlight is on the best stuff of several top-drawer, mixed-genre a cappella groups on a single CDit all has a very Harmony Sweeps-like energy to it, and we appreciated and enjoyed every cut!
