Iris

Iris is the Boulder-based women's vocal ensemble that has been evolving and performing since 1988. Hailed as part of the new vocal folk vanguard which embraces both Sweet Honey in the Rock and the Bulgarian Women's Choir (John Lehndorff, Boulder DailyCamera), the currently five-member coalition of singers and instrumentalists has developed a diverse repertoire of original and traditional music under the leadership of local composer, Joanna Lynden. Folk songs from around the world have always been an integral part of the IRIS repertoire, as well as jazzy arrangements and American standards. The group has toured Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Texas, and has a CD release, a Season of Song, that received national catalog distribution and countrywide NPR air play when it was released. In addition to numerous local concerts and benefit performances, IRIS has produced several large-scale multi-media presentations in Boulder over the last seven years, all involving original music composed by Ms. Lynden.

Iris was the recipient of Boulder Arts Commission grants in 1991 and 1994, and the Neodata Endowment for the Arts and Humanities in 1993.

Group members: Keidi Anderson, Tina Dozauer, Joanna Lynden, Carolyn Sclar, Michelle Wolf.

"Iris" are five women from Colorado, who perform a mixture of original and traditional material in the contemporary folk vein. The nature of existence, ephemeral yet everlasting, is the subject of the first cut, "All Things Are Connected"; the repetitive refrain drives the message home. The urgency of the bass motif fuels "Sweet Guru Child," the unison harmony of "Calling Me Open," (an original) gently flavors the melody with an honest sobriety of centuries past. Several tracks have subtle percussion, some of it vocal, adding energy and momentum. Iris' sound is tight and tuneful, and their songwriting and repertoire is eclectic without becoming obscure.
