University of Miami Chorale : Love Of My Soul

Review: This is a lovely program by the University of Miami Chorale. Led by Jo-Michael Scheibe the choir explores sacred and secular love. The program begins with O vos omnes by Victoria and an Ave Maria by Steven Edwards. Scheibe puts a spin on the Mass. In an Eclectic Missa Brevis he pairs two movements from Byrd's Mass for Four Voices with two movements from the Messe by Frank Martin. Some interesting pieces are the five Hebrew love songs by Eric Whitacre. They are set to poetry by Hila Plitman and accompanied by string quartet. This CD is a nice mixture of styles and is well sung.

Songlist: O vos omnes, Ave Maria, An Eclectic Missa Brevis:, - Kyrie (from the Mass for Four Voices), Gloria (from the Messe), Sanctus (from the Messe), Agnus Dei (from the Mass for Four Voices), Five Hebrew Love Songs:, - Temuna, - Kala kalla, - Larov, - Eyze Sheleg!, - Rakut, Selections from Neue Liebeslieder, op. 65, - Verzicht, o Herz, auf Retung, - Finstere Schatten der Nacht, - Ihr schwarzen Augen, ihr durft nur winken, - Rosen steckt mir an die mutter, - Vom Gebirge Well' auf Well', - Weiche Graser im Revier, - Nagen am Herzen, - Alles, alles in den Wind, - Schwarzer Walk, dein Schatten, - Nein, Geliebter, setze dich mir, - Flammenauge, dunkles Haar, - Zum Schluss: Nun, ihr Musen, genug!, Las Agachadas, Dear Sarah, The Gartan Mother's Lullaby, Two Rose Songs:, and more

University of Miami Chorale : Voices and Light

Review: An outstanding choir, the University of Miami Chorale sings great pieces from the modern choral repertoire. The dramatically moving suite "I Never Saw Another Butterfly," by Joel Hardyk is based on poems written by children imprisoned in Terezin and is for unaccompanied treble voices with oboe solo. The choir is led by Jo-Michael Scheibe and Robert Gower, piano.

University of New Mexico Concert Choir : Fast Falls the Eventide

Review: University of New Mexico Music Professor Brad Ellingboe and the UNM Concert Choir releases "Fast Falls the Eventide," a collection of sacred and familiar songs as well as pieces specially written and arranged for the choir including, "O Esca Viatorum," a 17th century hymn. Ellingboe's original piece, "Be Music, Night," is featured. Voice faculty Jaccqueline Zander-Wall, a mezzo soprano, is featured in the classic, "What a Wonderful World." "The name of the CD comes from the second line in the song 'Abide with Me.' The CD is comprised of gentle music about evening, music and the night. The more hidden meaning is 'abide with me,' or come with me to listen to the UNM choirs," Ellingboe said.

Songlist: Amor De Mi Alma, I Saw a Stranger Yestere'en, Shenandoah , O Esca Viatorum, Water Night, There Will Be Rest, St. Michael Prayer, Abide with Me, Be Music, Night, What a Wonderful World

University of Texas Chamber Singers : American Choral Music

Review: This anthology brings together representative works from the mainstream of contemporary American choral music. Charles Ives's Psalm 90 evokes a mood reminiscent of congregational Sunday singing in New England. Copland's In the Beginning recalls his Fanfare for the Common Man, while Lukas Foss's Behold, I Build An House shows the stylistic influence of Copland. Vincent Persichetti's Flower Songs reveal his deep commitment to his favourite poet E.E. Cummings, and favours the women's voices. In Fern Hill, set for alto, chorus and orchestra, composer John Corigliano sings of the joys of youth.

Songlist: Flower Songs, Psalm 90, Fern Hill, Behold, I Build An House, In The Beginning

US Navy Sea Chanters : Songs of Sailor and Sea

Review: The Sea Chanters is a 17 voice chorus of the United States Navy Band who perform a wide variety of choral music from classical to Broadway musicals. Part of their repertoire which is often requested are sea chanties and songs of the sea. Originally they were organized in 1956 as an all male chorus. Female voices were added in 1980. Under the direction of Master Chief Musician Chuck Yates, the Sea Chanties perform throughout the United States. When they are in Washington they often perform at the White House and for endless notable special events, performing with the National Symphony Orchestra, at President Nixon's funeral, at Carnegie Hall, aboard the U.S.S. Constitution in Boston Harbor, and at the 4th of July Celebrations at the Washington Monument, to name a few venues. The recording begins with a traditional sound as we are presented with the well known chanty, "From Boston Harbor." Then there are six songs with piano accompaniment from the collection of nautical themes by Eric H. Thiman. "Waternight" was written by Eric Whitacre for the Dale Warland Singers using text from Octavio Paz. You will be serenaded by four of the five "English Folk Songs" arranged by R. Vaughn Williams, a Percy Grainger arrangement, songs based on the work of Robert Frost, and finally "A Prayer for the Fleet" which was written the 40th anniversary performance of the Sea Chanties. This selection of music is as beautifully sung. Go Navy!

Various Artists : Best of Estonian Song Festivals - Laulupidude Aarded

Review: Estonia is a small nation, and again and again a quarter of them get together on the Song Festival Ground, with its massive "Arch of Song" and grounds, by the high limestone bank of Lasnamae, Tallinn, to take part in this wonderful festival, either as a singer or a listener. They arrive in a long, colorful parade, and then the fanfares start sounding, playing the theme from Ludig's song "The Dawn." The first of these festivals took place in 1869, and they have always been an expression of national consciousness and pride in this small Soviet-bloc nation as it strove for self-governance and freedom from oppression. "The Dawn" is joined by U. Vinter's powerful, a cappella "The Song of the Northern Land" as the two songs that resonate most in the hearts of the oppressed nation. There are 24 songs here, anthems that express the Estonians' pride and love for their country, beautiful examples are A. Kunleid's "My Fatherland Thou Are My Love" and "Until I Die;" K.A. Hermann's "Let Us Go Up To the Hills," R. Tobias' "The Young Blacksmiths" and "Wouldn't You Know;" G. Erneasaks' "The Young Spring" and "The Reaping Song;" M. Saar's "The Northern Spirit" and R. Eespere's "The Era of Awakening." There is occasional accompaniment, and extensive, colorful liner notes tell the story in both Estonian and English. A joyous collection from this powerful, phenomenal Festival of Song!

Songlist: Laulupeo Fanfaard, Mu Isamaa On Minu Arm, Sind Surmani, Laul Roomule, Enne Ja Nuud, Kaunimad Laulud, Mingem Ules Magedele, Noored Sepad, Eks Teie Tea, Laulik, Sirisege Sirbikesed, Noor Kevade, Arge Unustage Laulu, Loikuse Laul, Mets, Rukkiraak, Someralt Sormikule, Pohjavaim, Nokturn, Kes Selle Tamme Istutas?, Laul Pohjamaast, Laulu Algus, Arkamise Aeg, Tuljak

Various Artists : Bulgarian Choral Art Vol 1

Review: This recording features some of the finest artists practising the academic choral art in Bulgaria. The release contains a compilation of performances of Bulgarian choirs, starting with the children's, through the female, chamber, mixed, and ending with the male choirs. All of the pieces are arrangements by Bulgarian composers of original folk melodies. The recording includes performances by a variety of choirs: mixed, male, female and children's. The singing heard on this CD is in a Western classical style rather than the very pointed sound often associated with Bulgarian singing. The liner notes give translations of the songs.

Review: "Global Voices" is exactly as it says, 19 songs of praise from around the world, from the Sistine Choir in Italy's "Rorate Caeli-Song of Advent/Gregorian Chant," and Brazil's Wayna Picchu singing "Jesus Christo," to the Cook Island Choir's "Imenetuki Mangaia" and Baswa Ba Tumela, Sotho Gospel group of South Africa, singing "Jesu Oa Re Lwela." In addition, Greece, Russia, Slovakia, Croatia, Germany, Canada, Mexico, Bolivia, Peru, Dominican Republic, Marquesas Islands, Fiji, Sri Lanka and "Mbube" and "Zulu" choirs of South Africa. Various Artists : Sacred Treasures - Choral Masterworks From Russia

Review: The choral music of the Russian Orthodox Church is designed to set the soul soaring beyond earthly cares. Sung by the finest Russian and Bulgarian choirs, this extraordinary collection of transcendent prayers and hymns highlights a timeless Russian tradition of faith and devotion. Lush harmonies float in space, angelic high voices pour down from heaven, deep bass voices intone from the center of the earth, and the great bronze bells toll with awesome grandeur. The solemn ecstasy in the music of the Russian Orthodox Church can trace its roots back to the earliest days of Christian worship, via the great Byzantine Empire of the Near East. It presents an uncompromising search for peaks and depths of expressive fervor, aloof from all gimmicks. That was true of the music's multi-cultural roots as monastic chant, and was maintained as it evolved into full choral harmony in the late Romantic period.

Songlist: Russian Cathedral Bells, Great Ektenia, Hymn of Praise , Hymn of the Cherubim, Hymn of the Cherumbim, Our Father , Fervent Supplication , The Noble Joseph , Amen, And with Thy Spirit , I Have Chosen the Blissful , Hymn of the Cherubim, Final Bells

Various Artists : Sacred Treasures II - Choral Masterworks from The Sistine Chapel

Review: The psalm "Miserere mei Deus" is a prayer for mercy, contrition and renewal. Since the 1630s, Gregorio Allegri's famous setting has been sung at dawn during Holy Week, while the Pope kneels in prayer in the solemn candlelit atmosphere of the Sistine Chapel. This contemporary version, recorded in the spectral grandeur of Osnabruck Cathedral, adds new material composed by Vladimir Ivanoff to the ethereal harmonies of the Osnabruck Youth Choir and the elegiac brass tones of the cornetto, recreating the mysterious beauty of this sacred classic.

Songlist: Miserere Mei, Et Secundum, Amplius , Tibi Soli, Ecce Enim, Asperges Me, Averte Faciem, Cor Mundum, Danza I, Quoniam Si Voluisses, Tunc Acceptabis, Sofferenza, Tunc Imponent, Danza II

Various Choirs : Sacred Treasures III - Choral Masterworks from Russia and Beyond

Review: What could be more sublime than a wall of dark, rotund Russian voices shimmering against the rising, ornate walls of a great cathedral? Not much, and this compilation of absolutely magnificent music proves it. The label Hearts of Space returns on this third choral collection to the ominous Slavic chant of their first choral album, Sacred Treasures I, which gathered together recordings of stunning Bulgarian and Russian choirs portraying the sacred works of Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky, and other composers. Whereas Treasures I pulled from varied sections of sacred liturgies, including solo passages, Treasures III most often stays in harmonic chant with select voices occasionally rising and rolling in polyphonic heavenly calls. The collective voice draws the emotive tension taut here, as on Rimsky-Korsakov's "Our Father," which uses the absence of darkness to later juxtapose bold, rising drama. The Kiev chant "Blessed Art Thou O Lord" sends chills down the spine as the whispering consonants of the Russian language skip across the ancient repetition like sand skitters over a stormy beach. This is a collection as breathtakingly beautiful as the Cathedral of the Dormition itself. Not to be missed.

Songlist: Alleluia, Behold the Bridegroom, Sourp Sourp (Holy Holy), Lord Have Mercy , The Mercy of Peace, Komm, susser Tod, Serenade, Grant Us This O Lord , Our Father , Gloria (Excerpt) , Peaceful Light, Praise the Lord O My My Soul (Greek Chant) , Blessed art thou, O Lord , Chorali , Amen, Alleluia

Vasari Singers : Anthems for the 21st Century

Review: To celebrate its first twenty-five years of vibrant music making, the Vasari Singers commissioned ten composers each to write an anthem that might reflect the state of the world at the start of the new millennium. Their brief suggested that their work should be able to site comfortably within the context of a cathedral Evensong, but that it could also look beyond any constraints of Liturgy or formal religious doctrine to embrace a wider, more ecumenical audience; something more humanistic perhaps, that might connect more relevantly with multi-cultural, multi-faith societies of the world in the 21st century. This is an amazing variety of anthems concluding with Ward Swingle's (of Swingle Singers fame) ode to the earth and the environment.

Songlist: Bless The Lord O My Soul, Absolon My Son, Angel Song II , Mysterium Christi, Hear My Crying, O God, When I See On Rood , Now I Have Known O Lord , Chosen, I Saw Him Standing , On Another's Sorrow, Peace, Give Us This Day

Vasari Singers : Deep Purple - Close Harmony Arrangements

Review: This selection of close harmony arrangements offers several well-known items by composers as diverse as Kern, Gershwin and Mancini, but also includes some newer works, including a Vasari commission from Bob Chilcott called "Dances in the Streets" and "Birthday Madrigals" by John Rutter. This fine recording includes many arrangements by Ward Swingle with whom the ensemble has often worked with.

Songlist: Birthday Madrigals, Lullaby Of Birdland, A Nightengale Sang In Berkeley Square, Dances In The Street, Moon River, Autumn Leaves, Deep Purple, Calico Pie, Sit Down You're Rocking The Boat, Summertime, Love Is Here To Stay, Long Ago And Far Away, All The Things You Are, It was A Lover And His Lass, Weeping Willow, In A Mist, L'Amour De Moi, Country Dances

Vasari Singers : Kodaly Choral Works

Review: "Laudes Organi" was the last large scale work (1966) Kodaly completed. A secular rather than a religious work, it is based on an eloquent Latin text and is "a fantasy on a twelfth century sequence". The work is a summing up of the composer's many interests; the spirit of Gregorian chant, the parlando of Hungarian folk song, the almost visual effects he paints with the divided voices and the magnificent organ interludes, reminiscent of the polyphonic writing of Bach. The whole is nevertheless unmistakably Kodaly and is a wonderful affirmation of his faith in the life-giving power of music. The much-loved " Esti Dal" is based on a folksong collected in Northern Hungary by Kodaly in 1922. "Este", a youthful work - Kodaly was barely 20 when he set the poem by his university teacher Pal Gyulai. The work attained its final form in 1904 and shows remarkable maturity and control. The six-part mixed choir is used to paint a wonderfully evocative pastel of the poem's subject, the peaceful drifting into sleep.

Songlist: Laudes Organi, Esti Dal, Panga Lingua, Este, Missa Brevis, Introitus, Kyrie Eleison, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, Agnus Dei , Ite Missa Est

This central work is complmented by beautiful musical setting of religious texts, infused with a highly individual and melodic style, bringing the composer's life-long love of traditional choral music into the 21st century with spiritual sensitivity and a contemporary edge.

Vasari Singers : Pastorale - French Choral Music

Review: This is distinguished singing from a superb choir. There is some astonishingly original choral writing here, particularly to be found in those pieces which are almost never heard, and the reasons for their neglect can have little to do with the quality of the music.. Delibe's Les Norwegienes, with a remarkable 'Slipping on the ice' onomatopoeia, is a case in point, and the first of Saint-Saens's Deux Chansons , OP. 68 -'Calme des nuits' - is a wondrous piece. It is fascinating to hear Canteloube's a cappella settings of two of the more famous of his 'Bailero' alongside the equally well-known Faure Madrigal and Pavane, with piano accompaniment, the choral writing in the latter work coming across with exemplary clarity. The Ravel chansons, to his own texts, are brilliantly done here; Masonet's Amaranthe songs are a real treasure, and Jeremy Filsell's piano accompaniments are excellent.

Songlist: Trois Chansons De Charles D'Orleans, Serenade D'hiver, Les Norwegiennes, Deux Chansons , Bailero (Chants D'Auvergne) , L'Amour De Moi , Madrigal op. 35 , Pavane op. 50 , Trois Chansons , Le Nymphs Des Bois , Hymne Au Printemps , Chansons Des Bois D'Amaranthe

Vasari Singers : Requiem Aeternam

Review: Signum UK presents a deeply intimate disc, of personal and moving works by Herbert Howells and Frank Martin. In 1935 Herbert Howells' son died at the age of nine. Howells sought release and consolation in his writing, and composed the a capella, six-movement Requiem as a private document to his son. Indeed, Howells considered his Requiem so personal an outpouring that he felt the need to withhold it from publication. It was not released until 1980, only three years before the composer's own death. Frank Martin was a deeply religious man. He composed the Mass for Double Choir, early in his career. The work embodies the profound nature of his beliefs, and was the only work that Martin wrote purely for liturgical purposes. Such was the intensely intimate nature of the work, that, like Howells, the composer withheld it, and kept the manuscript safely in a drawer for over forty years. As Martin himself wrote, "This was something between God and me, that concerned nobody else". The Vasari Singers perform these pieces with passion and devotion, and capture the very private and deep-rooted feelings contained within each work.

Songlist: Requiem, Salvastor Mundi, Psalm 23, Requiem Aeternam I, Psalm 121, Requiem Aertnam II, I Heard A Voice From Heaven, Motet, Take Earth For Cherishing, Mass, Kyrie Elesion, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei

Vocalconsort Berlin : Motets

Review: The Motet is the oldest compositional genre in European polyphonic art music. Its history can be followed without interruption from the 12th century to the present day. The form was regular part of liturgical services in the two principle churches of Leipzig where JS Bach was employed from 1723 until his death in 1750. Scholars are divided as to the purpose of the six Motets. Though most of them were thought to be funeral music, they cover a lot of ground in terms of creativity, originality, choral and vocal techniques. Marcus Creed and the Vocalconsort Berlin offer small scale, intimate readings of these evergreen masterpieces.

VocalEssence : Dance Like The Wind

Review: In 1991 founder and artistic director Philip Brunelle and 24 mixed-voice VocalEssence presented "Witness," the first of an enduring series of concerts focused on the music of African American Composers. It was taken from "Witness: Six Original Compositions in a Spiritual Style," commissioned for Jubilant Sykes and VocalEssence. Visiting several area high schools while soloist Sykes was in Minneapolis for the premiere led VocalEssence to create an award-winning educational outreach program, bringing the talents of African Americans to thousands of Minnesota school students. A Woodwind Quintet and Jazz Ensemble perform with VocalEssence on the 18 pieces of "Dance Like The Wind," Undine Smith Moore's lovely "Mother to Son," "We Shall Walk Through the Valley" and "Tambourines to Glory," the title tune--William Banfield's beautiful instrumental, "My Soul Hath Found Refuge In Thee" (Psalm 91), by Evelyn Simpson-Curenton," Adolphus Hailstork's soaring "Nocturne," two selections from Billy Childs' "Piece for Stringed Orchestra" and David Baker's eclectic "Images, Shadows and Dreams: Five Vignettes." "Dance Like the Wind" is thought-provoking and moving music by eight modern, cutting-edge African American composers.

VocalEssence : The Songs We Sang

Review: Reflecting the shared American heritage like a patchwork quilt, this is a charming collection of folksongs performed by conductor Philip Brunelle and the 32-voice VocalEssence Ensemble Singers with guitar, harmonica, accordion, bass and piano. Whether passed along by tradition or composed by a known songwriter, all of these songs have a melody that you can hum, sing and remember! Thanks to Norman Luboff, Edwin Fissinger, Jack Halloran, and the dynamic team of Alice Parker & Robert Shaw, there are wonderful arrangements that capture the atmosphere of each in choral settings.

Voces Nordicae : Nordic Voices

Review: Lone Larsen founded the choir Voces Nordicae during her diploma studies at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, supervised by professor Anders Eby. Her Danish heritage is reflected on the album NORDIC VOICES; here you will find music by three of the most brilliant Danish composers: Vagn Holmboe, Jorgen Jersild and Per Norgard. This CD also contains two arrangements by one of Scandinavia's most apprechiated arrangers of choral music, Gunnar Eriksson. The two songs are Kristallen den fina (a quadlibet of three folk songs) and To the mothers in Brazil, the latter being one of the most popular songs by the Swedish jazz composer and pianist Lars Jansson. The Finnish composer Jaakko Mantyjarvi is represented with his magnificent piece Five Shakespeare Songs. Two composers; the Basque composer Javier Busto, with his folkloristic piece Sagastipean and the Estonian composer Urmas Sisask, with his expressive piece Benedictio, represent Europe outside the Nordic countries.

Songlist: Fjaugen , Kaerlighedsrosen, Min Yndlingsdal , Sagastipean, I Denna Ljuva Sommartid, Liber Canticorum, Kristallen Den Fina , Flos Ut Rosa Floruit , To The Mothers In Brazil/Salve Regina, Benedicto, Four Shakespeare Songs

Voces Nordicae : Time Is Now

Review: Time is Now, the successor of their first album Nordic Voices, contains a broad spectrum of favorites from the choir's repertoire. The time span is huge, covering music from the Renaissance to the present day, with compositions by Francisco Guerrero, Josef Rheinberger, James Taylor, Olle Lindberg, Susanne Rosenberg, among others. The conductor and artistic leader, Lone Larsen, has contributed with the title track Time is Now and also with some of the arrangements. The variety in the repertoire is a clear signum of Voces Nordicae. Voces Nordicae has gained an international reputation as one of the most prominent choirs in Sweden. Part of this reputation is due to their successful appearances at special performances abroad and a number of awards at international choir festivals. As one of the foremost representatives of Swedish choral singing, Nordic Voices was invited to the ACDA's (American Choral Directors Association) national meeting in Miami, in Mars 2007. This is an honor that previously has been given to only three Swedish choirs, among these the Swedish Radio Choir and The Real Group.

Songlist: Ave MAria, Pater Noster, Hymn To The Creator Of Light , Time is Now, Danse, Ikke Grate Na , Pust, Be Of Love, That Lonesome Road, Sun On The Moon , Det Er Den Storste Darlightet, Sonnet No. 76, Kyrie, Gloria , Kyrie

Voces Sacrae : Edmund Rubbra onsale

Review: A beautiful disc of (mostly) World Premiere recordings, this first-ever CD to be devoted solely to his choral music will act as a herald to next year's Rubbra centenary celebrations. The earliest are the Five Motets of 1934, settings of 16th century metaphysical poems. It was madrigalist Thomas Campion whose poems provided the basis for two delightful sets of Madrigals, and charming too are the group of four simple Carols. It is for his liturgical music that Rubbra is perhaps best known today, and the four substantial works included here demonstrate why. There is his largest a cappella piece, Lauda Sion, a magnificent Aquinas setting, plus his second setting of The Beatitudes. Two settings of the mass are featured, his third, written in medieval style, and his fifth. This is the focal point of the whole collection, the Mass in Honour of St Teresa of Avila of 1981 which was Rubbra's last major choral work, and summarises the composer's mature harmonic language.

Songlist: Five Motets, Eternitie, Vain wits and eyes, A Hymn to God the Father, The Search, A Song, Four Carols, Mary Mother, Op. 90, Entrez y tous, Op. 93, Star of the Mystic East, Op. 81, The Holy Dawn, Op. 135, Missa a3, Op. 98, Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Benedictus, Agnus Dei , Lauda Sion, Op. 110 (1960), The Beatitudes, Op. 109, Five Madrigals, Op. 51, When to her lute Corinna sings, I care not for these ladies, Beauty is but a painted hell, It fell on a summer's day, Though you are young, Two Madrigals, Op. 52, Leave prolonging thy distress, So sweet is thy discourse, Mass in Honour of St Teresa of Avila (1515-1582)(1981), Kyrie, and more

Review: Voces8 return to disc with this new recording of J.S.Bach's Motets, BWV 225-230. Joined by the Senesino Players, this young group prove their versatility and skill in performing some of Bach's most challenging and engaging compositions. This disc follows their a cappella debut disc with Signum earlier this year, Aces High (SIGCD187) - themed around some stunning jazz arrangements and songs from the James Bond films: "The slickest of the lot ... two parts King's Singers, three parts Swingle Singers, a dash of Bobby McFerrin and California sunshine ... fans of a cappella ought to hear this, not just for the singing but the production values and Jim Clements audacious arrangements" Andrew McGreggor, CD Review, BBC Radio 3

Voces8 : Evensong

Review: Voces8 has established itself as the foremost young British a cappella group, performing a varied repertoire, from popular and jazz arrangements to early polyphony. The 6-men, 2-women octet performs extensively in the UK, Europe and the US, and has been drawing reviews such as "stunning performance," "exquisite singing" and "a sound that spans the entire range of vocal color." We can only agree with this assessment in every way, and point out that after the octet's recent performance at the ACDA Convention in Oklahoma City, over a hundred people lined up at the PAC booths to buy "Evensong," and only 75 were lucky enough to get one, but we have now managed to get our hands on a bunch more from the group! 12 songs, every one an exquisite gem, so we will simply list them: British composers Ken Howard and Alan Blaikley's title tune, Al Jolson's "Me and My Shadow," Otis Blackwell's jazzy "Fever," "Gabriel's Message" (pop mix), Palestrina's soaring "Magnificat Primi Toni," Nat King Cole's "Straighten Up and Fly Right," Jerry Lieber/Mike Stoller's "Jailhouse Rock," "Good King Wenceslas," Orlando Gibbons' "O Clap Your Hands," Ben Folds' "The Luckiest," Gustav Holst's "Nunc Dimittis" and Leslie Bricusse/Anthony Newley's "Feeling Good." Be it Choral, Vocal Jazz, Pop, Classical Spiritual or whatever genre you'd care to put them in, Voces8 is one of the best a cappella groups we've ever heard. Buy "Evensong," turn the volume up or put on some fine headphones, and enjoy!

Songlist: Evensong, Me and My Shadow, Fever, Gabriel's Message, Magnificat Primi Toni, Straighten Up and Fly Right, Jailhouse Rock, Good King Wenceslas, O Clap Your Hands, The Luckiest, Nunc Dimittis, Feeling Good, Magnificat, Hallelujah, Gabriel's Message (Cathedral Mix)

Voices of Ascension : Can't Help Singing

Review: The voices of Ascension sing new choral arrangements of favorite Kern songs - in styles ranging from swinging Browdway (I Won't Dance; Can't Help Singing) to a timeless classical tone (All The Things You Are; Smoke Gets in Your Eyes). Dennis Keene's talented singers are accompanied variously by orchestra, harp, and string quartet, leading to some surprising moments such as a solo oboe emerging from the orchestra in a poignant Long Ago and Far Away. There is also the beautiful a cappella singing listeners have come to expect from Voices of Ascension - as in the rich 8-part version of All The Things You Are.

Songlist: Can't Forget You, All The Tings You Are, I Won't Dance, Don't Ever Leave Me, Pick Yourself Up, Make Believe, Why Was I Born Born, A Fine Romance, Can't Help Singing, They Didn't Believe Me, The Song Is You , Long Ago And Far Away, I'm Old Fashioned, You Couldn't Be Cuter, The Way You Look Tonight, Ol' Man River, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, Yesterdays, Don't Ever Leave Me

Voices of Ascension : Hear My Prayer

Review: Voices of Ascension evolved from a 1989 concert series of Church of the Ascension in NYC, when Dennis Keene directed the Ascension choir in a major music festival, "Tribute to Durufle," a retrospective of the French composer that drew international attention. The following year the group incorporated separately from the church as Voices of Ascension. The number of singers in the professional ensemble varies from 20 to 40, among the finest and most skilled ensemble singers and soloists in the country. Metropolitan Opera star Hei-Kyung Hong blesses the VOA with a lyric soprano voice of uncommon beauty and warmth. 15 selections; right from the beginning Randall Thompson's soaring a cappella "Alleluia" and Mozart's "Laudate Dominum" show off the amazing soprano voice of Hei-Kyung Hong. Two by Pablo Casals, "Tota Pulchra" and "Nigra Sum," Felix Mendelsson's "Hear My Prayer" and Durufle's "Tu es Petrus" make it abundantly clear that we are in the presence of greatness. Nicolai Tolstiakov's "Blagoslovi, dushe moya, Ghospoda (Bless the Lord, O My Soul)," Tchaikovsky's "Bazheni, yazhe izbral (How blessed are they)," Charles Villiers Stanford's "Beati quorum via" and the final cut, Mendelssohn's "Happy and blessed are they" leave us in stunned silence after listening to the angels. Some organ accompaniment. Amazing!

Songlist: And I Saw a New Heaven, Alleluia , Laudate Dominum , Tota Pulchra , Nigra Sum, Hear My Prayer , I was glad when they said unto me , Tu es Petrus , Panis angelicus , Like as the Hart, Blagoslovi dushe moya, Ghospoda (Bless the Lord, O My Soul) , Blazheni, yazhe izbral (How blessed are they), Pieta, Signore, Beati quorum via , Happy and blessed are they

Voices of Ascension : Mysteries Beyond - In Praise of Mary

Review: "Mysteries" is a very special collection of the Keene's and the Voices of Ascension's favorite pieces from many periods and countries having to do with Mary, mother of Jesus. Two of our favorites are two of the oldest pieces on the recording, the lovely a cappella "Alma Redemptoris Mater" by Giovanni Palestrina and Tomas Luis de Victoria's classic "Ave Maria." Other favorites are Anton Bruckner's "Gradual: Os Justi," Gabriel Faure's "Tantum Ergo," which only grows more beautiful with repeated hearings, Schubert's "Die Allmacht" and "Psalm 23," Pablo Casals' "Eucaristica," Charles Gounod's "Ave Maria," and Felix Mendelssohn's "Psalm 43." Some light accompaniment by harp, piano and organ. New York City's 38-strong, mixed-voice Voices of Ascension is one of our favorite choirs recording sacred music, and "Mysteries" is an inspiring joy from the first cut to the last!

Songlist: Alma Redemptoris Mater, Gradual: Os Justi , Tantum Ergo , Ave Maria , Ave Maria , Tota Pulchra Es , Ave Maria , Die Allmacht, Ave Maria , Eucaristica , Ave Maria , Psalm 23 , Psalm 43 , Ave Maria , Cantique de Jean Racine , Ubi Caritas

Voices of Ascension : Prince of Music - Palestrina

Review: One of the finest (and most prolific) mixed choirs recording sacred music we have heard, NYC's exquisite Voices of Ascension turns their attention to Giovanni Pierluigi de Palestrina, the most famous Italian composer of his day. Laid to rest in one of the side chapels of St. Peter's in Rome at his death in 1594, the plaque on his coffin is inscribed "Prince of Music." Included here are the 6-part "Missa Papae Marcelli" and the 7th part, "Agnus Dei II," 8 "Motets and Offertories," and bonus tracks "Alma Redemptoris Mater," "Sicut cervus" and its second part, "Sitivit anima mea." The music is all a cappella, and to listen to any random movement, such as "Credo," "Sanctus," "Tue es Petrus" or "Peccantem me quotidie" is to hear the songs of angels, some of the most beautiful a cappella music ever written!

Songlist: Missa Papae Marcelli ~ Kyrie eleison, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, Angus Dei I, Secundum multitudinem, Tu es Petrus, Dum complerentur, O Domine Jesu Christe, Super flumina Babilonis, Canite tuba, Rorate coeli, Peccantem me quotidie, Agnus Dei II, Alma Redemptoris Mater, Sicut cervus, Sitivit anima mea
