Simon Phipps Vokalensemble : Britten - Sacred and Profane

Review: In its first CD-release, the Simon Phipps Vocal ensemble performs music written entirely by the greatest English 20:th century composer, Benjamin Britten. This is a tribute to the composer whose music influenced Simon Phipps already at an early age; his father was Britten's agent. Britten's immensely rich and varied choral production is reflected on this CD that spans from beauty to drama. The CD contains some of the composer's most acknowledged compositions like A Hymn to the Virgin, Five Flower Songs and Hymn to Saint Cecilia, as well as the great suit Sacred and Profane with its vibrating vocals and racy medieval lyrics. It also contains the vocally challenging suit Choral Dances from the opera Gloriana. Enjoy Britten's music performed by Simon Phipps' excellent Vocal ensemble on this edition of Benjamin Britten's choral music.

Simon Phipps Vokalensemble : Poulenc - Sacred and Profane

Review: Simon Phipps Vocal Ensemble was formed in 1997. Most of the 26 singers have a professional background in music, and several of them are working as musicians in and around Goteborg. The ensemble was named Choir of the Year 2006 by Rikskonserter. During the last few years Simon Phipps Vocal Ensemble has established itself as one of Sweden's most prominent choirs. By winning a number of competitions, both nationally and around Europe, it has consolidated its position as an ensemble with a high quality of sound and a particular depth of repertoire. Sacre et Profane consists of choir music by Francis Poulenc (1899-1963), with lyrics by great French poets such as Paul Eluard and Guillaume Apollinaire. Poulenc is perhaps primarily regarded as a composer of vocal works: solo songs, choir music, oratories and operas, music that he set to lyrics of a high literary quality. Simon Phipps Vocal Ensemble has previously made a recording of music by Benjamin Britten (FRCD 006). A third CD is in the making, and will include works by Johannes Brahms. These three records reflect the composers' interpretations of both sacred and secular lyrics. Thus their common designation "sacred and secular".

Songlist: O Magnum Mysterium, Quem Vidistis Pastores Dicite, Videntes Stellam, Hodie Christus Natus Est, Salve Regina, Timor Et Tremor, Vinea Mea Electa , Tenebrae Factae Sunt, Tristis Est Anima Mea, Exultate Deo, La Blanche Neige, A Peine Defiguree, Par Une Nuit Nouvelle, Tous Les Droits, Belle Et Ressemblante, Marie, Luire, De Grandes Cuillers De Neige, La Bonne Neige, ois Meutri, La Nuit, Le Froid, La Solitude, MArgooton, Va Ta L'iau, La Belle Se Sied Au Pied De La Tour, Pilons I'orge, C'est La Petit Fill Du Prince, Ah Mon Beau Laboureur, Les Tisserands

Sixteen : Allegri Miserere

Review: The haunting tones of Allegri's Miserere are uniquely and instantly recognizable even to those who know little sacred music. It was only ever sung in the Sistine Chapel, where Allegri himself was a chorister. Palestrina had sung there before Allegri was born and his best-known work is Miss Papae Marcelli. Like his Stabat Mater it combines exquisite poise with a translucent setting of words. Chromaticism and blossoming cadences are employed to heart-rending effect in Lotti's eight-part Crucifixus in a unique blend of 16th and 18th century musical styles.

Songlist: Crucifixus, Stabat mater Dolorosa, Miserere Mei, Missa Papae Marcelli, - Kyrie, - Gloria, Credo, - Sanctus and Benedictus, - Agnus Dei I, - Agnus Dei II

Sixteen : An Eternal Harmony

Review: The vast power of the Royal Courts of England and Scotland may be long gone but the sumptuous sounds of their worship are not lost. This disc brings together music of some of the most outstanding but now little-known composers of the 15th and 16th centuries, and introduces a major new work by one of this century's most remarkable composers, James Macmillan. Robert Carver's mesmeric setting of the devotional text "O bone Jesu" has long been admired and has now proved an inspiration to James MacMillan who has chosen with this special commission for The Sixteen, to clothe the same text in his own musical language of reflective beauty. "This 25th Anniversary CD is a delight, and like all great recordings it gets better the more you listen to it." - BBC Radio 3, CD Review

Songlist: Dum Sacrum Mysterium, Credo From Mass, O Bone Jesu, When David Heard, In Monte Oliveti, O Vos Omnes, How Are The Mighty Fallin', Salve Regina , Ave Maria Mater Dei , O Bone Jesu

Sixteen : Barber - Agnus Dei

Review: This collection of American choral music spanning the 20th century features familiar and less well-known composers, from the lyrical traditionalism of Barber by way of Bernstein and Copland to the counterpoint, rhythmic verve and neo-classicism of Irving Fine. The disc finishes with the dreamily haunting Acrostic Song from Final Alice by David del Tredici.

Songlist: Agnus Dei , O Know To End As To Begin, Have You Seen The White Lily Grow?, O Do Not Wanton With Those Eyes, Against Jealousy, Lament, The Hour-Glass, Clapping Music, Spring Song, Court Song, Soldier's Song, Prelude, Benedictus, Sanctus', Requiem, Gloria, Help Us, O Lord, Thou, O Jehovah, Abideth Forever, Have Mercy On Us, O My Lord, Sing Ye Praises To Our King, Mary Hynes, Anthony O Daly, The Coolin, Acrostic Song From "Final Alice"

Sixteen : Fen and Meadow

Review: Most critics consider Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) the most eminent English composer of the twentieth century. His works include masterpieces of choral, operatic, orchestral and chamber music. The works on this album show some of the breadth and range of Britten's choral writing, embracing the masque from his opera Gloriana, his own take on the English part song tradition in Five Flower Songs, and his last work for unaccompanied voices, Sacred and Profane. The latter sets medieval texts described herein as "a mixture of the devotional and the rumbustiously secular". The Sixteen is one of the jewels in the musical crown of Britain, and enjoys a worldwide reputation for clarity and beauty with precision and dramatic intensity. Founded in 1977 by its director, Harry Christophers, its albums have received nearly every major prize of the recording industry including the prestigious Gramophone Award for Early Music. The Sixteen's special reputation for early English polyphony! , masterpieces of the Renaissance, and a diversity of twentieth century music is founded on a naturalness of performance, a revealing clarity and beauty of sound, precision, and a dramatic intensity of delivery. To date, The Sixteen and The Symphony of Harmony and Invention have made over 90 recordings, many award-winning, in a range of work spanning the music of 600 years, rediscovering and performing lost and little-known repertoire.

Songlist: Choral Dances From 'Gloriana', The Masque Begins, First Dance: Time, Second Dance: Concord, Third Dance: Time and Concord, Fourth Dance: Country Girls, Fifth Dance: Rustics and Fishermen, Sixth Dance: Final Dance of Homage, Advance Democracy, Ballad of Little Musgrave and Lady Barnard, A Wedding Anthem, To Daffodils, The Succession of the Four Sweet Months, Marsh Flowers, The Evening Primrose, Ballad of Green Broom, St Godric's Hymn, I mon waxe wod, Lenten is come, The long night, Yif ic of luve can, Carol, Ye that passen by, A death

Sixteen : Flowering of Genius

Review: Music from a turning point in history .... the short-lived marriage between Mary Tudor and Philip II of Spain, although barren and doomed, resulted in a glorious flowering of Anglo-Spanish music which saw the greatest musicians from the two nations meeting and working together. The music for a flamboyant Christmas Day ceremony in St. Paul's Cathedral in 1554 was a celebratory focal point of an extraordinary resurgence of the Catholic faith in England, fuelled by hopes, soon to be dashed, that Mary was pregnant.

Songlist: Francisco Guerrero (1528-1599): Ave Virgo sanctissima, Thomas Tallis (1505-1585): Suscipe quaeso, Tomas Luis de Victoria (1548-1611):, O Vos Omnes, - Vere languores, - O Domine Iesu Christe, Thomas Tallis: Agnus Dei from mass "Puer natus", Tomas Luis de Victoria:, - Super flumina Babylonis, - Vadam et circuibo, - Laudate Dominum omes gentes, John Sheppard (1500-1558): Verbum caro, Philippe de Monte (1521-1603): Super flumina Babylonis, William Byrd (1543-1623): Quomodo catabimus

Sixteen : Frank Martin

Review: Frank Martin was arguably Switzerland's greatest composer. His shimmering Mass for Double Choir, completed in 1926 as 'an affair between God and himself', is one of the finest settings of the 20th century, yet it had to wait forty-one years to be shared with others in its first performance. This collection of his choral music also includes his cantata for Switzerland's National Day and the Ode to Music, along with some charming part-songs. Eclectic and technically superb these pieces display a style that is serenely individual.

Songlist: Cantate pour le 1er Aot, Janeton, Petite eglise, Si Charlotte avait voulu, Come unto these yellow sands, Full fathom five, Before you can say, You are three men of sin, Where the bee sucks, Sonnet, Le coucou, Ode, Le petit village, Ode a la Musique, Kyrie eleison, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, Agnus Dei

Sixteen : Ikon of Light - Sir John Tavener

Review: Despite the mystic beauty of his music, John Tavener's place in Western music is a controversial one. His desire to create musical ikons for a time in which he believes 'man has lost his belief not only in God, but also in himself' is provocative. Yet part of the attraction of his music must surely arise from its symbolic nature, a reflection of his deeply-held Orthodox faith. This collection cvers a wide range of Tavener's celebrated choral output and includes his immediately popular setting of William Blake's The Lamb, and the luminously spiritual, Ikon of Light.

Songlist: A Hymn to the Mother of God, Hymn for the Dormition of the Mother of God, The Lamb, The Tyger, Ikon of Light, Fos I, Doxa, piu intensita, Trisagion, Mystic Prayer To The Holy Spirit, Trisagion, Fos, Today the Virgin , Eonia

Sixteen : Thomas Tallis : Spem in alium

Review: Newly recorded in the round and in surround sound, Thomas Tallis' 40-part motet, Spem in alium, one of the great landmarks of polyphony, forms the centre-piece of this dazzling CD. Under the theme, Music for Monarchs and Magnates' The Sixteen draws together music by Tallis, Byrd, Gibbons and Thomas Tomkins, some of it never before recorded, some indeed not performed since the time of its writing. It explores the use of music for ceremonial, even propaganda purposes by the state, contrasted with the composers' private use of biblical texts to give public vent to their own sometimes dangerous views in an England torn by political and religious strife. Alongside the usual 40 voice setting of Spem in Alium is an English version of the same work - Sing and Glorify - which was adapted to an English text for King James I to honour his son Henry, the newly-annointed Prince of Wales. With cornetts, sackbuts, dulcians and organs in place of some voices, this is a glorious complement to the usual version.

Songlist: Spem in Alium , O all true faithful hearts, Deus venerunt gentes, Know you not, Great King of Gods (Lord of Lords), O God, the heathen are come, Te Deum, Be Strong and of A Good Courage, Spem in Alium (also set as "Sing and glorify")

Sixteen : Tomas Luis de Victoria - Requiem 1605

Review: This new recording features the celebrated Requiem of 1605, Victoria's final composition, a work of beguiling beauty and sumptuous simplicity. It can be seen as the summation of both his art and the Spanish Renaissance tradition. The beautiful plainsong on which it is structured can be heard arching through the texture, forming a delicate and sinuous line throughout. Subtly accompanied by a chamber organ and bajon, it is recorded here with the same forces as may well have performed it originally in the Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales. The Requiem is preceded by Marian Antiphons interspersed with three motets setting texts from the Song of Songs.

Songlist: Salve Regina, Ave Regina caelorum, Nigra sum, Quam pulchri sunt, Trahe me post te , Ave Regina caelorum a, Taedet animam meam, Missa pro defunctis a 6 Introit, Kyrie, Gradual, Offertory, Sanctus & Benedictus, Agnus Dei , Communion, Funeral motet: Versa est in luctum, Responsory: Libera me

Sixteen : Victoria - The Call Of The Beloved

Review: The great Spanish composer and priest, Victoria, devoted his life to writing supremely uplifting and intense music throughout the church calendar. The Call of the Beloved includes some of the earliest triple-choir music ever to be published and is a reminder of Victoria's joyous and passionate music, complementing his more austere Requiem and music for Holy Week. "If one can ever achieve complete emotional expression through the power of music, then here it is." - Harry Christophers. "This is a beautifully prepared and rewarding recording that deepens our appreciation of one of the greatest masters of the renaissance." - Gramophone

Songlist: Motet: Laetatus sum a 12, Missa: Laetatus sum a 12, Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus , Benedictus , Agnus Dei , Hymn: Veni creator spiritus a 4 , Motet: Vadam et circuibo civitatem a 6 , Motet: Vidi speciosam a 6, Hymn: Ad caenam Agni providi a 4, Magnificat Sexti toni a 12

Sofia Armenian Choir : Armenian Liturgy

Review: An original CD presenting the rare opportunity to possess a recording of Armenian Liturgy. The Holy Apostolic Church of Armenia is one of the oldest churches in the Orient. The chants of three composers mainly are included in the service Most frequently the liturgy of Ekmalian created in the last decade of the 19th century is used. The chants are beautifully harmonized for mixed choir performance, some of them with a soloist. Included are twelve church chants in all, in which widely sung-out jubilation parts in expression of man's homage to God and Jesus Christ alternate with melodic-and-recitative episodes which have originated from the psalmodic singing. The programme strikes with the virtuosity of the hymns, the variety of the richly ornamented melodies and the interesting harmonic devices. The music brings the atmosphere of peace and concentration, of contemplation and deep thought of God the Creator and the sacrifice of His Son. Patarag, as the liturgy is called, is performed by the Sofia Armenian Choir with soloists Father Karapet Benlian, Marie Krikorian, the famous opera singer, Marie Basmadjian and Alice Bovarian under the baton of Bedros Papazian.

Sofia Chamber Choir : Bulgarian Composers

Review: The conductor Vassil Arnaudov is an example of high musical culture and mastership in the development of Bulgarian conductor art. Even today, 12 years after his death, we still remember his top achievements. During his creative art he visited many places in Bulgaria so as to help a lot of conductors and choirs. He passed his knowledge with deep love to his students, and a number of them have become famous choir conductors. His greatest achievement is with the Sofia Chamber Choir and the "Rodina" Choir in Rousse. Part of the magnificent performances of the Sofia Chamber Choir have been included in the present release, which is dedicated to the 70th anniversary of Vassil Arnaudov's birth. The programme features Bulgarian composers, whom the conductor had a great respect for. His collaboration with different composers has often provoked the creation of works specially written for the Sofia Chamber Choir. Admirers of choral singing will find some of them in the present release.

Soweto Gospel Choir : African Spirit

Review: South Africa's 26-strong, mixed-voice Soweto Gospel Choir draws their talented singers from the churches and communities around Soweto. Their exuberant sound is a blend of traditional music rooted in song and percussion, combined with the influence of 19th century missionary music, called African Gospel. The Choir continually tours the world to standing ovations and sold-out concerts, and has performed with artists from Bono, Peter Gabriel and Queen to Diana Ross, Jimmy Cliff and Johnny Clegg. They are famous for their bright costumes and spirited live performances, and for their fundraisers to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS in South Africa. 18 songs, some accompanied, are here. Soweto Gospel Choir : Grace

Review: On its fifth album for Shanachie, the Soweto Gospel Choir expands its musical reach outside its homeland and even the church, and in turn offers musical examples of the various meanings of the word "grace." On this 19-track collection, the group sticks close to its traditions on most songs, writing and performing original ones, as well as interpreting many traditional ones in their unique way in six of South Africa's official languages. In addition, they reach into the secular world with a radical reinterpretation of Paul Simon's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" that lends the song a far deeper, wider-ranging shade of meaning.

Songlist: Kae Le Kae, Emarabini, Mangisondele Nkosi Yam, Eli, O'Nkosi Yam, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Muphulusi, Ndikhokhele, Put Your Hand Medley, Umoya We Nkosi, Ngahlulele, Voices On the Wind, Ingoma, Oh! It is Jesus, Prayer for South Africa, Jerusalem, Ave Maria, Calvary, Grace

Soweto Gospel Choir : Live at the Nelson Mandela Theater

Review: This multitalented group has exploded onto the world music scene, wowing audiences with its virtuosity and passion. Drawn primarily from the churches and communities of South Africa's most famous township, the choir mixes earthy rhythms, rich harmonies, drumming, dancing, and irrepressible charisma for an experience that lifts the soul and stuns the senses. Filmed live in concert on their Australian tour, they sing a blend of traditional gospel and contemporary standards in English as well as some of the 10 other official languages of South Africa. Constantly in motion and dressed in vibrantly colored robes and textiles, with one superb soloist after another taking the lead, they offer up such highlights as "Asimbonanga," Jonny Clegg's tribute to Nelson Mandela; Peter Gabriel's "Biko"; "Mbube," the South African song that became "The Lion Sleeps Tonight"; the traditional ballad "I Bid You Goodnight"; Bob Marley's classic "One Love"; and Nkosi Sikelel'iAfrika, the South African National Anthem.

Soweto Gospel Choir : Voices From Heaven

Review: The 25 mixed-voice Soweto Gospel Choir draws on the best talent from many churches and communities in and around Soweto, and is truly an "all-star" Gospel ensemble. Like Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the SGC has strong roots in traditional music and celebrates the vitality of South Africa with its powerful spiritual message. They've achieved breakthrough success in Europe (two sold-out shows at London's Royal Festival Hall!), Africa and Australia, and their sellout runs in 2003 and 2004 were the surprise hit of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. "Voices" is the SGC's debut recording, and it includes an irresistible mix of traditional South African secular and gospel songs, American gospel material such as "Amazing Grace," and stirring inspirational tunes such as "Many Rivers to Cross," sung in English as well as Zulu. Some tracks are breathtaking a cappella, while others are upbeat tracks with instrumental backing. A massive tour of the US is accompanying the launch of "Voices" in early 2005, most notably Carnegie Hall in NYC, Sanders Theatre in Boston and the Robert Frost Center in Atlanta. "Voices" is an impressive, powerful, joyous debut CD for the Soweto Gospel Choir!

Songlist: Jikela Emaweni, Vuma, Thina Simnqobile, Zanele, Paradise Road, Ahuna Ya Yswanag Le Jesu/Kammatia, Many Rivers to Cross/Going Down Jordan/Amen (Medley), Amazing Grace, Thula Baba, Sikulandile, Malaika, Hlanganani, Bayete, Jerusalem, Holy City/Bayete (Medley), African Dream

Spiritual Revival Choir of Moscow : Serene Ecstatsy

Review: Created in 1992, at the end of the Soviet era, when freedom of religious expression was once again permitted, the Spiritual Revival Choir of Moscow's Schnittke Institute of Music has a repertoire that understandably deals with the spiritual exultation of religious celebration. Besides music of Russian composers, the Choir's repertoire includes music of the Renaissance and Baroque, Viennese classics, and 18th and 19th-century Romantic masterpieces. Favorites are "The Russian Soil: Chants dedicated to Russian Saints," Tchaikovsky's "Prayer of Repentance for Russia" and "Eucharist from the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom," Alexander Arkhangelsky's "I cried out to the Lord," Pavel Chesnokov's "Blessed is the Man" and "The Angel Cried," Nicolai Lebedev's "Funeral Mass," Valery Kikta's "Hymn to the Holy Virgin," and Alfred Schnittke's (founder of the Institute of Music) "Three Sacred Chorales." Tremendous depth, feeling and spirituality comes through the music of the Spiritual Revival Choir, directed by Lev Kontorovich. Beautiful and inspirational!

Songlist: The Russian Soil: Chants dedicated to Russian Saints, Prayer of Repentance from Russia (Peter Tchaikovsky), Eucharist from the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom (Peter Tchaikovsky), I cried out to the Lord (Alexander Arkhangelsky), Three choruses from the cycle "Days of Battle" (Pavel Chesnokov), Blessed is the Man (Pavel Chesnokov), The Angel Cried (Pavel Chesnokov), Praise the Lord, O my Soul (Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov), Three selections from "Vespers" (Vladislav Agafonnikov), Selections from "Funeral Mass" (Nikolai Lebedev), St. Dimitry Rostovsky's Pslam of Repentance (Valery Kikta), Hymn to the Holy Virgin (Valery Kikta), Three Sacred Chorales (Alred Schnittke)

St Charles Singers : I Know Where I'm Going

Review: Rarely heard works by English composer/conductor John Rutter are highlighted on this highly acclaimed disc by the St. Charles Singers. Fancies is a cycle of choral settings with small orchestra which uses texts from the 15th and 16th centuries including Shakespeare and Thomas Campion. This performance is only the second recording of this charming piece. Other Rutter pieces include, "The Keel Row," "Black Sheep," "Down By the Sally Garden" and "I Know Where I'm Goin'." All of the Rutter arrangements are accompanied by soloists from the Metropolis Chamber Orchestra. The remainder of the recording is an assortment of American and British folk song arrangements. "Flower of Beauty," is especially beautiful. This recording includes some great singing from a fine American choir.

Songlist: Tell Me Where is Fancy Breed, There Is a Garden in Her Face, The Urchins' Dance, Riddle Song, Midnight's Bell, The Bellman's Song, Flower of Beauty, The Keel Row, The Turtle Dove, Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair, Lamorna, Black Sheep, Down By the Sally Gardens, He's Gone Away, Swansea Town, The Oak and The Ash , Early One Morning, I Know Where I'm Going, Londonderry Air, Shenandoah

St John's College Choir, Cambridge : Mendelssohn - Sacred Choral Works

Review: Nowhere is Mendelssohn's creative psyche more poignantly exposed than in his choral works. His desire to create music rewarding for performers and listeners alike is everywhere apparent, as is his always mellifluous and gracious vocal writing. Most endearing of all are Mendelssohn's worlds of dreamlike contentment, which cocoon the listener in a web of enchanted idealism. Hor mein Bitten (Hear my prayer) is the most popular of his small-scale choral works and was composed during Mendelssohn's eighth visit to England in 1844, just before he began putting the finishing touches to his violin concerto. The piece conjures up the feelings of peace and contentment in the flowing melodic lines of the inimitable O for the wings of a dove, which is also on this disc in its famous English adaptation. All of these sacred works are radiantly performed by The Choir of St John's College, Cambridge under David Hill in the first of a new series of recordings on the Hyperion label.

Songlist: Aus Tiefer Not , Ave Maria, Mitten Wir Im Leben Sind, Hor Mein Bitten, Warum Toben Die Harden, Richte Mich Gott, Zum Abendsegen, Kyrie Eleison, Helig Helig Ist Gott Der Herr Zebaoth, Ehre Sei Gott in Der Hohe, Verleih Uns Frieden, O For The Wings

St John's College Choir, Cambridge : Tavener - Song for Athene

Review: John Tavener is one of contemporary music's most distinctive and recognizable voices; writing deeply felt compositions of instant magnetism and lyrical intensity inspired by a strong Greek Orthodox faith. At the very heart of his work is sacred music, a genre in which Tavener has established considerable fame with contemporary classics such as "The Lamb" and "Hymns To The Mother of God" as well as the elegiac "Song For Athene". "Svyati", for cello and chorus, takes the form of a musical incantation against the hushed voices of the choir. This rarely-heard masterpiece sees Tavener deploy an unusual combination of musical forces to powerful and moving effect.

Songlist: God Is With Us, Song For Athene, The Lamb, The Tiger, Magnificat and Nunc Dimiittis, Funeral Ikons, Hymns To The Mother of God, Love Bade Me Welcome, As One Who Has Slept, The Lord's Prayer, Svyati

St. Louis African Chorus : AENaO

Review: The 16 mixed voices of The St. Louis African Chorus bring us the US premier of a cappella pieces (sometimes with the accompaniment of African drums of various kinds) written by composer Ikoli Harcourt-Whyte. These spiritual songs are accompanied by various narrators who tell the story of this deeply religious Christian man who found God while overcoming 34 years of suffering as a leper. 14 songs, some examples are "Chebe Mo Nna" (Guide Me Father), "Onyinye Chuku" (God's Gift), "Tikuenu Jehova" (Praise Jehova), "Obu Chuku" (It Is God), and "Kp' Ekpere" (Pray). This is a moving, inspirational story of a very special man, perfectly accompanied by his wonderful music!

Songlist: Chebe Mo Nna (Guide me, Father), Chebe Mo Nna (Guide me, Father), Onyinye Chuku (God's Gift), Okwu Nkasi Obi (Comforting words), Ihe Ndia Di Njo (This thing is bad), Tikuenu Jehova (Praise Jehova), Nw' Oge Nta (In a little while), Obu Chuku (It is God), Obu Chuku (continued), Atulegwu (Fear not), Otuto Nke Chuku (Praise belongs to God), Otuto Nke Chuku (continued), Kp'Ekpere (Pray), Chebe Mo Nna (Guide Me, Father)

St. Olaf Choir : Charles Ives - The Celestial Country

Review: The Celestial Country was composed sometime before 1900, probably when Ives was organist at the fashionable First Presbyterian Church in Bloomfield, New Jersey, and it was scored for choir, strings and organ. This dramatic, symphonic work uses choruses, an a cappella chorus and instrumental interludes, and bold unresolved dissonances. Ives strives for a modern, more streamlined expression, though indulging in a Wagnerian finale, as much Wagner as he would ever display in a lifetime of composing. The veteran 75 mixed-voice St. Olaf Choir brings a fresh, immediate feel to this material, as if we are present for the first performance of this work in April, 1902 at Central Presbyterian Church in NYC. First we have the 12 movements of "Celestial Country," then 9 movements of "Silence Accompanied," written in the final years of Ives' creative life, the aftermath of WWI and the defeat of Wilson's plan for the League of Nations. "Aria for Baritone, "Chorus A Cappella," "Double Chorus A Cappella," "Aria for Tenor" and "Chorale & Finale" are particularly fine from "Celestial Country;" "Afterglow," "The Collection," "Duty/Vita/Duty," "Carol," "Sunrise" and "Mists" in "Silence." Beautifully illustrated, complete liner notes tell us all about the composer, the music and the Choir.

Songlist: Prelude, Trio & Chorus, Interlude, Aria for Baritone, Chorus a cappella, Interlude, Intermezzo for String Quartet, Interlude, Double chorus a cappella, Aria for Tenor, Introduction to Finale, Chorale & Finale, Silence Unaccompanied:, Adagio Sostentuto, Evening, Afterglow, The Collection, Duty/Vita/Duty, Carol, Sunrise, Hymn, Mists

St. Olaf Choir : Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion

Review: Northfield, MN's St. Olaf College welcomed author and humorist Garrison Keillor to their campus in spring, 2001 for a benefit performance. It went so well he was back within a year with his "A Prairie Home Companion" for a live broadcast that included repeat performances with the St. Olaf Choir and Orchestra, and the Limestones, a six-male student a cappella vocal ensemble. This CD is all from that live performance. There are 21 songs, narrated throughout by Keillor. His "St. Olaf travelogue, Holiday in Delaware" has the audience in stitches as he describes St. Olaf denizens in hilarious detail, and his "Winter Camping vignette" is a classic. There are purely instrumentals like "Mambo (from West Side Story)," and "Varen (Spring), Op.33, No. 2);" but our favorites are a cappella and accompanied vocal pieces: "Beautiful Savior," "Keep Your Lamps," "Choral Blues," "Have a Little Faith" by the Limestones, "Holy Trinity vignette," "Arroz Con Leche," "Danny Boy," "We Praise You, O God," and "Children of the Heavenly Father." There is some percussion (by the St. Olaf Percussion Ensemble), and accompaniment on some songs. All in all, "Companion" is a fun and entertaining show, and a showcase for the musical talent of all types that clearly flourishes at St. Olaf.

Songlist: Tishomingo Blues, Introduction by Garrison Keillor, Mambo, St. Olaf travelogue: "Holiday in Delaware", Garrison talks about St. Olaf and Christiansen legacy, Beautiful Savior, Garrison talks about St. olaf and is choral tradition, Keep Your Lamps, Garrsion talks about St. Olaf College, Um! Yah! St. Olaf Choir : My Soul's Been Anchored in the Lord

Review: The St. Olaf Choir was founded by F. Melius Christiansen in 1911 who had come to St. Olaf College in 1903 to organize the music department. It was he who fostered the tradition of a cappella sacred music. Now Anton Armstrong is the fourth conductor in the history of the choir who adds his interest in the Western European choral music and both U.S. and global folk music into the repertorial mix of this historic choir. Thus we'll find folk songs, Bach, Rachmaninoff, and compositions of Kenneth Jennings who was the choir's third director. You will share sacred music from a variety of countries in a whole host of musical settings, from pure a cappella to selections accompanied by solo piano, organ, or viola. Lovely!

St. Petersburg Chamber Choir : Russian Easter

Review: The St. Petersburg Chamber Choir and their director, Nikolai Korniev, show off subbasement basses, soaring sopranos and a rich, well-blended sound in "Russian Easter," a group of eleven settings for Easter worship by Alexander Grechaninov, Dmitri Bortnyansky and other masters of Russian church music. The compositions were written variously from the 18th century through the present, but all stay true to the spirit and aesthetic of the Orthodox tradition. Those who find plainchant a little on the monotonous side but are still looking for a spiritual element in music will find much to admire and enjoy in these beautifully sung presentations.

Songlist: Alleluia Behold The Bridegroom , Gentle Light , Of Thy Mystical Supper , The Wise Thief , Let All Moral Flesh Keep Silent , In The Flesh Thou Didst Fall Asleep, The Paschal Hours , Paschal Hymn To The Virgin, To Day All Creation , Come O People, Give Ear To , My Prayer

Stile Antico : Media Vita

Review: Less well-known than Thomas Tallis, Sheppard's fame has spread slowly, because his compositions only made it to the twentieth century in manuscript form and many of them are incomplete. What survives bears all the hallmarks of greatness. This recording provides ample evidence of his bold, rich and individual harmony, as well as an inspired knack for compositional passion, while still adhering to Archbishop Cranmer's protestant tastes for concise word setting. The performance captured here is at the same lofty standard that Stile Antico's earlier recordings attained - almost perfect. This group engages the listener like no other, with the purpose of soloists, the tonal evenness of an ensemble, and with a clarity that is ground-breaking.

Songlist: Gaude, gaude, gaude Maria, The Lord's Prayer, I give you a new commandment, Media vita, Christ rising again, Haste thee, O God, Te Deum
