Princeton Singers : In The Midst of Life

Review: The music on this recording is a juxtaposition of joyous and somber. The album begins and ends with music by Gerald Finzi and features two Requiem settings by Henry Walford Davies and Herbert Howells. The setting by Davies, which is "in memory of those fallen in the war," begins with a beautiful soprano solo. The Requiems are set using texts from the Book of Common Prayer. The majority of the music on this recording is by twentieth century British composers, which is the focus of this group. The notable exception is Samuel Barber's Reincarnations. This superb choir is conducted by founder John Bertalot.

Songlist: Lo, the Full, Final Sacrifice, A Short Requiem in D Major, Requiem , Jesu, Grant Me This I Pray , Reincarnations, Opus 16 , My Spirit Sang All Day

This piece features guest artists Chanticleer. The recording is an assortment of folksongs from around the world, American standards and American folk and gospel songs. Princeton Singers : Reincarnations

Review: Reincarnations was recorded during the choir's first season under the direction of Steven Sametz. The repertoire explores a series of connections between the old and the new. It opens with Samuel Barber's Reincarnations, with texts by James Stephens which focus on different facets of love. Sametz has three pieces showcased on this recording: "On the Death of a Friend," "Magnificat" and "in time of ." Sametz's "Magnificat" is juxtaposed by that if Villiers Stanford, both featuring the resident choir of the American Boychoir School. Other pairings are two very different settings of the joyful text "Exultate Deo" by Palestrina and Poulenc. This is a very nice recording marking the beginning of a new era for this wonderful choir.

Songlist: Reincarnations , Come haro donque , Chi chili chi , Death Hath Deprived Me of My Dearest Friend , Magnificat in G , Magnificat , Exultate Deo , Exultate Deo , Babylone , Due cori di Michelangelo Buonarroti, In time of

Quink Vocal Ensemble : Ain't Misbehavin'

Review: The three women and two men of this Dutch classical ensemble open this recording with 6 sixteenth-century works by the Dutch composer Sweelinck (though written in French, the courtly language of the time). Two "chanson" by Debussy follow, and then selections by Poulenc and Britten, both twentieth-century composers; as is characteristic of modern music, the harmonic progressions can be something of a non-sequitur, depending on your point of view! For dessert, five close harmony arrangements, including "Besame Mucho," "My Romance" (as arranged by Puerling) and of course, "Ain't Misbehavin'". A rich and satisfying tapestry of sound.

Songlist: vostre amour est vagabonde, tes beaux yeux, tu as tous seul, pseaume 72: tes jugements dieu veritable, pseaume 78: sois ententif, mon peuple, pseaume 137: estans assisaux rives aquatiques, dieu! qu'il la fait bon regarder, yver! vous n'estes qu'un villain, la petite fille sage, le chien perdu, en rentrant de i'ecole, le petit garcon malade, le herisson, st. godrics hymn, i mon waxe wod, lenten is come, the long night, yif ic of luv can, carol, ye that pasen by, a death, besame mucho, if ever i would leave you , misty , My Romance , ain't misbehavin'

Quink Vocal Ensemble : Benjamin Britten

Review: Acclaimed Dutch singers perform beautifully the unaccompanied choral works of Britten. Since their debut in 1978 the ensemble has finely-crafted its bright, clear, rich a cappella sound, applying it with great success to compositions from Renaissance, Baroque, Romantic and even folk origins. Quink's take on master vocal composer Benjamin Britten is unusual in that they perform works written for choir and unaccompanied chorus, shedding new light on them with the intimacy and clarity of their interpretations. Beginning with "Hymn to St. Cecelia, OP. 27" (1942) and "Five Flower Songs, OP. 47" (1950) and continuing through the eight Medieval lyrics of "Sacred and Profane, OP. 91" (1975, a year before Britten's death), these songs give us a new appreciation of Britten, and of course of Quink, one of the best classical choral quintets in the world! Recommended.

Songlist: Hymn To Cecilia, Five Flower Songs, Sacred And Profane, A Wealden Trio: The Song Of Women - Ford, The Sycamore Tree - Trad., A Shepard's Carol - Auden

Quink Vocal Ensemble : English Madrigals

Review: Between 1588 and 1627, the isolation of English musical culture was broken by the influx of Italian music and composers, and during this period a beautiful collection of Madrigals with English words and composers was created. The acclaimed Quink Vocal Ensemble (Kees-Jan de Koning, bass, Harry van Berne, tenor, Paula de Wit, soprano, Machteld van Woerden, soprano, and Corrie Pronk, alto) bring us 18 perfectly-recorded madrigals from this period, three from Thomas Morley, two from Francis Pilkington, two from Thomas Tomkins, two from Thomas Bateson, two from William Byrd, one from John Farmer, four from John Wilbye, and two from Thomas Weelkes. This music is bright and romantic, with a lively grace and harmonic clarity, the result of probably the first English musical "craze!"

Songlist: Now Is The Month Of Maying, Farewell, Disdainful, No, No Nigella, Why Should I Grieve?, Sweet Phylida, Phyllis, Now Cease To Move Me, Too Much I Once Lamented, Those Sweet Delightful Lilies, Phyllis, Farewell, Come To Me Grief, Forever, Come, Woeful Orpheus, Fair Phyllis I Saw, Weep, Weep, Mine Eyes, (1st Part)I Fall, I Fall, O Stay Me, (2nd Part) And Though My Love Abounding, Adieu, Sweet Amaryllis, The Nightingale, The Organ Of Delight, Hark, All Ye Lovely Saints

Quink Vocal Ensemble : Folk Songs of the World

Review: Folk songs exist in all countries and come from all centuries, whether in the form of lullabies, love songs or narrative ballads. These songs reflect our societies and diverse cultures. The Quink Vocal Ensemble has captured some of these songs from Europe, the United States and Israel. A number of them were arranged by classical composers such as Ralph Vaughn Williams who actively collected and studied folk songs and Arnold Schoenberg, best known for his less tonal works, set texts from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries to create works that rival the best Renaissance madrigals. This CD brings together a quite varied but interesting group of songs.

Songlist: Hora!, Hitrag'ut, Sheleg al yiri, Loch Lomond, The Dark-Eyed Sailor, She's Like The Swallow , At The Foot Of Yonder Mountain , The Riddle Song, Nyeznyakomka, The Unfaithful Lover, Handsome Mirko / Eighteen Shining Buttons, Heaven Above, Hussars / Fairy Tale, Am Donaustrom, Ej, steht ein Madchen, Auf der Erde hat nichts Weile, Glaubst du, dass ich, Ich hab' die Nacht getraumet, Wie kommt's dass du so traurig bist, Schein uns, du liebe Sonne, Herzlieblich Lieb, durch Scheiden, Virginie, les larm' aux yeux, Oh! Review: On Invisible Cities, Quink Vocal Ensemble perform unusual and striking a cappella repertoire. The performances heard on this recording make up a rare collection of the music of twentieth century Dutch composers. Quink Vocal Ensemble : Renaissance Madrigals

Review: From about 1520 to about 1620 the Italian madrigal, which refers to almost any musical setting of secular verse (but especially those whose subject is love and death) of two to eight voice parts, had its brief but brilliant lifetime. Quink, (Kees-Jan de Koning, bass, Harry van Berne, tenor, Paula de Wit, soprano, Machteld van Woerden, soprano, and Corrie Pronk, alto) since its debut in 1978 has established its reputation and following on the international concert scene. "Renaissance" features 14 madrigals, one by Cipriano de Rore, four by Giaches de Wert, three by Claudio Monteverdi, two by Alessandro Scarlatti and four by Alessandro Stradella. The liner notes contain bios of these men, and the words of all the songs in Italian and English. Beautiful harmonies!

Songlist: Alla Dlce ombra, Dura Legge D'Amor, Lo Non Son Pero Morto, Datemi Pace, Vezzosi Augelli, Baci, Soavi E Cari, Lo Mi Son Giovinetta, Si Ch'io Vorrei Morire, O Selce, O tigre, O Ninfa, Mori Mi Dici, Tirsi Un Giorno Piangea, Pupilette Amorose, Piangete, Occhi Dolenti, Clori Son Fido Amante

ReGeneration : Hymns In Velvet

Review: Velvet: a rich fabric. The harmonies of Regeneration: sumptuous, angelic outpourings of rejoicing, of which velvet is a most fitting adjective. Carrying on in the mode established by the best-selling "Christmas In Velvet" volumes one and two, the fourteen traditionals and hymns contained here (ten of which were released a few years ago in a now out-of-print recording entitled"Pure Silk"), are inspiring not only because of their thematic content of praise, but because of the arranging of Derric Johnson, the group's director. To study a Derric Johnson arrangement is to contemplate the canon of a master. Key to his style is his seamless blending of classical choral and jazz idioms that are fresh, yet easy to assimilate. What could be more uplifting than the gloriously ascending intervals of "More Than Wonderful," ending in an epic high note? The serene and resonant "Holy Ground" is set against a backdrop of plush oohs and aahs. The countermelodic texture of "Just As I Am" is engaging but never excessive. The men and women of Regeneration (some of whom moonlight as Walt Disney World's "Voices of Liberty"), could not be more pristine in their performance. Their control, phrasing and interpretation is textbook perfect. All in all, "Hymns in Velvet" is an exercise of pure enjoyment.

Songlist: Great Is Thy Faithfulness, Jesus, Lover of my Soul, Just a Little Talk With Jesus, Spirit of God, I Must Tell Jesus, A Mighty Fortress , I Walked Today Where Jesus Walked, O Love That Will Not Let Me Go, Just As I Am, It Is Well With My Soul, Go Down Moses, Holy Ground, Jesus Is His Name, More Than Wonderful

RIAS - Kammerchor : Mendelssohn - Psaumes

Review: "It is an art to conceal art" : Mendelssohn had never presented a more perfect illustration of this maxim than in his Motets, Op.69. Composed in the year of his death, they are probably the finest works of religious music by this composer whom Berlioz had accused of being "a little too fond of the dead". But the most romantic of Bach's votaries had more than one trick up his sleeve and it would be a mistake to underestimate these extraodinary psalms and motets that Mendelssohn went on producing throughout his life, in spite of his rather strained relationship with the eccelsiastic authorities. Tradition and inventiveness are the leading principles of an artistic credo based on the skilful and beguiling mixture of counterpoint and melody, of harmony and brilliant orchestration. After having devoted three universally acclaimed recordings to the choral music of Brahms, the RIAS-Kammerchor is here on familiar ground

Songlist: Psalm 100: "Jauchzet dem Herrn alle Welt", Psalm 2 op. 78 Nr. 1: "Warum toben die Heiden", Psalm 43 op. 78 Nr. 2: "Richte mich, Gott", Psalm 22 op. 78 Nr. 3: "Mein Gott, warum hast du mich verlassen?", Choralmotette op. 23 Nr. 3: "Mitten wir im Leben sind", Motette op. 69 Nr. 1: "Herr, nun lassest du deinen Diener in Frieden fahren", Motette op. 69 Nr. 2: "Jachzet dem Herm alle Welt", Motette op. 69 Nr. 3: "Mein Herz erhebet Gott, den Herrn", Missa breve, Zum Abendsegen: "Herr, sei gnadig unserm Flehn"

RIAS - Kammerchor : Poulenc: Figure humaine

Review: Poulenc's choral works constitute a high point in the choral art of the twentieth century. Figure humaine is probably Poulenc's most original choral score. Written in the middle of World War II, this cantata set to eluard's texts includes the famous Liberte, a poem that the RAF dropped in the form of leaflets over France. Quatre petites prieres de saint Francois d'Assise was composed in 1948 at the request of the composer's nephew, Brother Jerome Poulenc. These four short prayers to texts by Saint Francis of Assisi are dedicated to the Friars Minor of Champfleury. Poulenc's Sept chansons for mixed chorus bring together poems by Apollinaire and eluard. Influenced by Monteverdi, they belong to the tradition of Debussy's Trois chansons de Charles d'Orleans. Since its foundation after the Second World War, the RIAS-Kammerchor has played an important role in the musical life of Berlin. Contemporary music has always been at the heart of its repertoire and these performances, led by Daniel Reuss are presented with innate understanding and deep reverence.

Songlist: Sept Chansons, Un Soir De Neige, Figure humaine, cantata for 12 voices, Quatre Petites De St. Francois d'Assise, Chanson a boire, for male chorus

RIAS Kammerchor : Mendlessohn Opp, 41, 48, 59, 88 & 100

Review: Mendelssohn once said, "The most natural music of all occurs when four people go out together in the woods or in a boat, and carry the music with them and inside them!" These pieces for chorus, sparkling musical miniatures, are perhaps the fi nest illustration of this profession of artistic faith. Mendelssohn's lovely choral music tends to get overshadowed by that of Brahms and by Mendelssohn's own works in other genres. This disc makes a strong case for a reassessment of the musical merit of his work in this genre. Berlin's RIAS-Kammerchor has established itself as a world-class ensemble which owes its reputation chiefl y to the performance of a cappella works. Led here by their new principal conductor, Hans-Christoph Rademann, the group continues its tradition of heartfelt music making.

Songlist: Im Walde, Entfieh' Mit Mir, Es Fiel Ein Reif, Auf Ihrem Grab, Mailied, Auf Dem See, Fruhlingshnung, Die Primel, Fruhlingsfeier, Lerchengesang, Morgengebet, Herbslied, Im Grunen, Fruhzeitiger Fruhling, Abschied Vom Walde, Die Nachtigall, Ruhetal, Jagdlied, Neujahrslied, Der Gluckliche, Hirtenlied, Die Waldvogelein, Deutschland, Der Wandernde Musikant, Andenken, Lob Des Fruhlings, Fruhlingslied, Im Wald

Robert Shaw : Faure / Durufle

Review: The Faure Requiem was begun in 1886 and finished in the first weeks of 1888. Unlike other requiems, this piece has no sense of doom or angst. It expresses no fear of death, but rather depicts the reaching for eternal happiness. Warm and comforting, this work is a rare gem in the French repertoire. Durufle's greatest known work was his Requiem written in 1947. At the time it was commissioned, Durufle was composing a suite for organ solo based on the Gregorian chants of the Mass for the Dead. It was this suite that was expanded and transformed to become the requiem. The insightful interpretation and superb performance of these requiems by Robert Shaw and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra & Chorus is unmatched. This release received a Grammy Award for Best Engineered Classical Recording.

Songlist: Faure Requiem (7 Movements), - Introit & Kyrie, - Offertory, - Sanctus, - Pie Jesu, - Agnus Dei, - Libera me, - In Paradisum, Durufle Requiem (9 Movements), - Introit, - Kyrie, - Domine Jesu Christe, - Sanctus, - Pie Jesu, - Agnus Dei, - Lux Aeterna, - Libera me, - In Paradisum

Robert Shaw : Great Choral Classics

Review: There is an abundance of great choral music in the world. This compilation by Robert Shaw leading the Atlanta Symphony and Choruses is some of the best, from the opening movement of J.S. Bach's Magnificat to the "Intaberna quando sumus" from Orff's Carmina Burana. These pieces are triumphant and glorious and as always beautifully performed by this highly acclaimed group of musicians. It is hard to pick the favorites among the best, but this is a good place to start.

Songlist: "Gloria all'Egitto" from Aida , "Agnus Dei" from Requiem , "Magnificat anima mea" from Magnificat , "In taberna quando sumus" from Carmina burana, II. (Psalm 23-Psalm 2:1-4) from Chichester Psalms , Laudamus Te, "Kyrie" from Mass No. 2 in G Major , "Tui Nati vulnerati" from Stabat Mater, "Te Deum" from Four Sacred Pieces, "Sing to God" from The Creation , "Osanna in excelsis" from Mass in B Minor, "Cum Sancto Spiritu" from Gloria , "Selig sind die Toten" from Ein deutsches Requiem

Robert Shaw : Power and Majesty

Review: Robert Shaw's awards shelf had to be expanded to make room for the National Medal of Arts from Pres. Reagan, Musician of theYear by Musical America, the Theodore Thomas Award of the Conductor's Guild, a Gold Record, Britain's Gramophone Award, 13 Grammys, four ASCAP awards, the list goes on and on. Shaw began directing the Fred Waring Glee Club to radio fame, then his Collegiate Chorale, finally moving on to the Robert Shaw Chorale, whose tours and recordings brought him worldwide fame. He became music director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in 1967. "The Power" combines the orchestral power (as in heavily accompanied) of the Symphony with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus and the Robert Shaw Festival Singers to do justice to 17 monumental pieces by such heavies as Verdi, Durufle, Orff, Mozart, Borodin, Bach, Handel, Berlioz, Faure, Haydn and Rachmaninoff. Remember the drama and power of the "Hallelujah Chorus" from Handel's "Messiah?" It's here, and there's 16 others like it. Amazing!

Songlist: Dies irae (Giuseppe Verdi), Tuba Mirium, Pie Jesu (Maurice Durufle), O Fortuna (Carl Orff), Dies irae (Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart), Rex tremendae, Confutatis, Lacrimosa, Polovtsian Dances (Alexander Borodin), Missa: Kyrie eleison (Johann Sebastian Bach), Hallelujah Chorus (George Frideric Handel), The Shepherds Farewell (Hector Berlioz), Sanctus (Gabriel Faure), The Heavens are Telling (Franz Joseph Haydn), "Va, pensiero" (Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves) (Verdi), Nyne Otpushchayeshi (Sergei Rachmaninoff), Dies irae (Berlioz)

Robert Shaw Chorale : Handel: The Great Choruses From Messiah

Review: We hardly need to mention Robert Shaw's credentials as a group leader and director of the Fred Waring Glee Club, the RS Festival Singers, RS Chorale and RS Chamber Singers, his Grammys and ASCAPS and his 50-plus year legendary career in music. This is a digitally remastered reissue of a classic lp of one of some of the most beloved music of all time, the Great Choruses from Handel's Messiah. The piece is given to us in 17 parts, from "And the Glory of the Lord" and the famous "For Unto Us a Child Is Born" to "Their Sound Is Gone Out Into All Lands," "Hallelujah" and finishing with "Worthy Is The Lamb That Was Slain." Of course this CD is orchestrally accompanied, with harpsichord and organ, throughout. As with all the CDs associated with Robert Shaw that we carry in our catalog, "Great Choruses" is a powerful, wonderfully performed work of art!

Songlist: And the Glory of the Lord, And He Shall Purify, For Unto Us A Child Is Born, Glory to God, His Yoke Is Easy, Behold the Lamb of God, Surely He Hath Borne Our Griefs, And with His Stripes We Are Healed, All We Like Sheep Have Gone Astray, He Trusted in God, Lift Up Your Heads, Oh Ye Gates, Let All the Angels of God Worship Him, The Lord Gave the Word, Their Sound Is Gone Out Into All Lands, Let Us Break Their Bonds Asunder, Hallelujah, Since by Man Came Death, O Death, Where Is Thy Sting?, But Thanks Be to God, Worthy Is the Lamb That Was Slain

Robert Shaw Chorus : Dvorak: Stabat Mater

Review: The late Robert Shaw, who died in January 1999, had a long and fruitful relationship with Telarc, spanning twenty years and producing 41 recordings, eleven of which have won Grammy Awards. The current recording is the final one to be made by the conductor. Included on the second disc is a spoken interview of Shaw made by National Public Radio's Martin Goldsmith, host of "Performance Today." The interview was made in November 1998, just after the recording sessions for the Dvorak Stabat Mater, and features Shaw discussing his career, this work, and the state of the choral art. Portions of the interview were originally broadcast over NPR on April 2, 1999. The Stabat Mater was written by Dvorak in direct response to personal and private grief when he began the work, in 1876, he and his wife had recently lost a baby daughter, who had lived only two days. Other work intervened requiring the composer to set the Stabat Mater aside, but he soon resumed it in 1877 after losing two more children in quick succession-a baby daughter to accidental poisoning, and his three-year-old son to smallpox. The work was premiered in Prague in 1880, by which time Dvorak had risen from obscurity and poverty to become an internationally known composer. In 1883, the London premiere of the Stabat Mater met with such success that Dvorak was invited to come to England to conduct the work. He did so, conducting an enormous orchestra and chorus in the Royal Albert Hall in 1884.

Songlist: Stabat Mater Dolorosa , Quis est homo, qui non fleret , Eja, Mater, Fons amoris, Fac, ut ardeat cor meum , Tui Nati vulernati , Fac me vere tecum flere , Virgo virginum praeclara , Fac, ut portem Christi mortem , Inflammatus et accensus, Quando corpus morietur , Robert Shaw Discusses Dvorak's Stabat Mater with Martin Goldsmith

Robert Shaw Chorus : Schubert: Mass No. 2 & Mass No. 6

Review: From America's greatest choral conductor, Robert Shaw, and his superbly trained Atlanta forces comes a recording of two settings of the Latin mass by Franz Schubert. Shaw and the Telarc recording team have won numerous Grammy Awards, they continue that tradition of excellence with Schubert: Mass No. 2 & Mass No. 6. In all, Schubert wrote six Masses over a period stretching from his school days to the end of his life. All but the last were written for specific performances in local churches, and all are practical works reflecting Viennese performance customs of the time. Mass No. 2 in G major was composed in 1815, when Schubert was 18 and just embarking on a teaching career. Simple and tuneful, it is a small-scaled work for chamber choir accompanied only by strings and organ. Soprano, tenor, and bass soloists contribute to the intimate beauty of the choral writing. The Mass must have gladdened the heart of his teacher, Antonio Salieri, who praised Schubert's first Mass with the words, "Franz, you are my pupil and you are going to do me proud." The product of a remarkable surge of music Schubert wrote in his final year, Mass No. 6 in E-flat major lay unperformed until a year after his death. It is basically a choral mass, as its five soloists (soprano, mezzo, two tenors, and bass) are used sparingly. The festive orchestra includes strings, timpani, and full winds except for tuba and flute. Its overall shape and construction follow traditional practice-more so than his preceding setting in A-flat. In harmonic language and details of text setting, however, we encounter a different Schubert, a Romantic who produced telling dramatic effect through his use of frankly pictorial writing and daring chromatic digressions.

Songlist: Mass No. 2, Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, Agnes Dei, Mass No. 6, Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, Agnes Dei

Robert Shaw Festival Singers : A Cappella

Review: Since his death in 1999, Robert Shaw continues to be revered by American choral directors and music lovers, and his recorded interpretations are regarded as the gold standard among all those available. His numerous Grammy Awards attest to the regard in which he was held by his fellow musicians. This collection of seventeen choral selections are in recognition of Shaw's stellar body of work and were recorded during his last decade. These tracks are considered the best of the best, exquisite examples of the deep spiritual rapport Shaw achieved with unaccompanied choruses. One piece, the Verdi "Ave Maria," is performed by his 200-voice Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus in one of their rare opportunities to engage in a cappella singing. The remaining sixteen tracks were recorded by the smaller ensembles he formed in his final years-the Robert Shaw Festival Singers, who performed and recorded at his summer choral festivals in the south of France, and the Robert Shaw Chamber Singers, which brought together the best of his Atlanta voices for concerts and recordings during the winter months.

Robert Shaw Festival Singers : O Magnum Mysterium

Review: The final years of Robert Shaw's life saw a return to his devotion to unaccompanied vocal music. Many will remember the Robert Shaw Chorale which was so popular in the 1950s and into the '60s. For two decades ending with his official retirement in 1989, Robert Shaw was the conductor and music director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. During that period most of his choral work was for orchestra and chorus. Yet even before his retirement he had established the Robert Shaw Choral Institute which devoted it's efforts to furthering choral arts through conductor training, workshops and performances. Through the establishment of its summer festivals beginning in 1989, participants who were selected by audition came to the Quercy district of south-central France for two weeks of instruction and intensive rehearsal, culminating in a week of performances in the wonderful medieval churches of the region. Many of the recordings on this release were obtained by Telarc during the momentary summer existence of the Robert Shaw Festival Singers. In the winters Robert Shaw created the Chamber Singers to further the practice of choral music. From both these groups has been assembled a group of recordings which reflect the deeply spiritual nature of the founder. Several of them have never been released before. You will find classical works by Tallis, Poulenc, Rachmaninoff, Schubert, and others in addition to several gospels sung by some of the most beautiful voices of the time. This is glorious full choral splendor!

Songlist: If Ye Love Me, A New Commandment, O Vos Omnes, O Magnum Mysterium, O Magnum Mysterium, O Magnum Mysterium, Praise The Name of The Lord, Der Entfernten, American Hymns and Spirituals : Wondrous Love, Amazing Grace, Sometimes I feel Like a Moanin' Dove, Totus Tuus, OP. 60

Robert Shaw Festival Singers : Poulenc

Review: One of the members of Les Six, a group of avante garde French composers, Francis Poulenc was one of the twentieth century's most notable composers of sacred choral music. Much of this dynamic music is gentle with a mystic sense of simplicity. There are often passages with a rocking alternation of chords with false harmonic relations. Selections from this wonderful recording by then Robert Shaw Festival Singers include the Mass in G major, Four Short Prayers of Saint Francis as well as motets for Christmas and Penitence. The music of Poulenc is must for any collection.

Songlist: Mass In G Major, Quatre Motets Pour le Temps de Noel:, Quatre Motets Pour Un Temps de Penitence:, Quatre Petites De St. Francois d'Assise

Robert Shaw/Atlanta Symphony : Barber/Bartok/Williams

Review: Barber's Prayers of Kierkegaard was commissioned by the Koussevitsky Foundation in 1942, but the composer did not complete the work until January, 1954. It is a setting, in the form of a single-movement cantata, of four prayers by the Danish theologian and philosopher Soren Kierkegaard (1813-1855). Robert Shaw gave the American premiere of Bartok's Cantata Profana at Carnegie Hall in 1952. For this recording, he has used a refined version of the English translation of the text he made for that premiere performance. Vaughan Williams's Dona Nobis Pacem was intended as a warning of the threat of war in Europe in the mid-1930s. The texts are taken from the poetry of Walt Whitman, the Bible, the Latin Mass, and from a speech made in the British House of Commons during the Crimean War in the 1850s by John Bright.

Songlist: O Thou Who Art Unchangeable, Lord Jesus Christ, Who Suffered All Life Long, Father In Heaven, Well We Know That It Is Thou, Father In Heaven! Hold Not Our Sins Up Against Us, Part I, Part II, Part III, Agnus Dei , Beat! Beat! Drums!, Reconciliation, Dirge For Two Veterans, Angel Of Death, O Man Greatly Beloved

Rockefeller Chapel Choir : 20th Century German Sacred Music

Review: German church music goes back to Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation. Luther's love of music has influenced German composers for centuries. In the 20th century, this was no exception. The composers chosen for this recording all use Luther's chorale melodies, though with newer harmonies which lend themselves to fresher musical and textual expression. This recording includes motets by Hugo Distler and Johann Nepomuk David. All of the works are beautifully sung by the Rockefeller Chapel Choir.

Songlist: Pater Noster, Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied (Opus 12. No. 1), O Heiland, reiss die Himmel auf (Opus 21, Pt. 2, No. 3), Lo! How a E'er Blooming (from the Christmas Story), Es ist das Heil uns Kommen her (Opus 6, Pt. 2, No. 2), Furwahr, er trug unsere Krankheit (Opus 12, No. 9), Deutsche Messe:, Das Kyrie, Das Credo, Das Agnus Dei, Das Gloria, Das Sanctus, Victimae paschali Laudes (Opus 35, No. 1), Nun bitten wir den heiligen Geist, Veni Creator Spiritus

Rockefeller Chapel Choir : Lamentations & Exultation

Review: The two extremes in sacred music are lamenting and praising. In their take on the subjects, the Rockefeller Chapel Choir, led by Randi Von Ellefson, chose pieces from the Renaissance and the 20th century. There are several settings of the Lamentations of Jeremiah including that of Palestrina and di Lasso. There is a lovely Easter Anthem by William Billings as well as beautiful psalm settings by Stanley Hoffman. On this CD the choir alternates lamentation with exultation. Daniel Pinkham's striking "Here Repose, O Broken Body" provides quiet and thoughtful ending to an emotionally varied recording.

Songlist: The Eyes of All Wait Upon Thee, De Lamentatione Jeremiae Prophitae, Sabbato Sancto, Lectio I , Christus Factus Est , Lamentation Secunda Tertii Diei (Elegia Quarta, 1-7), Easter Anthem , David Mourns for Absalom , Psalm 23 , Psalm 121 , Give Thanks Unto the Lord, Lamentations, Passion Music , Here Repose, O Broken Body

Royal Holloway Choir : Korvits - KreekÕs Notebook

Review: Rupert Gough and the Choir of Royal Holloway offer listeners another fascinating album of contemporary Baltic music. The primary work on the recording is based on Estonian folk hymns collected in the early twentieth century by Cyrillus Kreek, who was the Estonian equivalent of Bart—k or Grainger. During the Soviet era, the singing of these religious songs was forbidden and the entire genre was all but forgotten. By the end of the twentieth century, fresh light could be shone on these folk collections and composer Tonu Korvits was particularly struck by the music's fresh possibilities. In writing Kreek's Notebook, Korvits both pays homage to Kreek and presents his own totally modern take on the folk hymn idiom. Although there is a dramatic unity to this eight-movement work, there is much diversity in timbre and scoring. The effect is improvisatory in the creative ornamentation of the vocal lines, and suffused with dreamy textures that bring to mind the great tradition of Eastern European choral writing.

Songlist: Nuud ole, Jeesus, kiidetud (May Jesus now be praised), Nuud on see paev ju loppenud (Now the day is over) , Ma kiitlen ukspainis neist verisist haavust (I alone praise those wounds that bleed), Oh vota, armas Jeesus, vastu mult (Oh receive from me dear Jesus), Su hooleks ennast annan ma (I shall give myself up to your care), Lenda ules kurbtusest (Fly up from your sorrows), Minu hing, oh ole roomus (My soul, oh be joyful), Ma vaatan ules maele (I gaze up at the hill), The night is darkening round me , Lacrimosa (Maskats), In memoriam (Plakidis), Tuksnesu karstos putekjos (In the hot dust of desert)(Fatamorgana-Mirage) , Kas kaiteja an dziedat (Why should I not sing?) , Meza virins (The forest elves) , Lugums naktij (Prayer to the night)(Maskats)

Royal Holloway Choir : Miskinis: Choral Music

Review: Royal Holloway's debut Hyperion recording (of the Latvian composer Rihards Dubra) received a rapturous response from the critics. Now they have produced a second volume of Baltic delights, turning this time to Lithuania and the sumptuous music of Vytautas Miskinis, the doyen of current Lithuanian choral culture. His music, while bearing identifiable Lithuanian roots, is a synthesis of different influences carefully shaped and moulded with an experienced understanding of choral orchestration. Like many other Baltic composers of the same generation, Miskinis takes an essentially diatonic approach but with much overlaying of harmonies and coloured cluster-chords. What makes the music unmistakably Lithuanian is the influence of two folk-song genres. The overall effect is luscious, radiant and exotic. This music is passionately performed by these talented young singers and sensitively recorded in a generous church acoustic.

Songlist: Dum medium silentium, O sacrum convivium, Pater noster, Tenebrae factae sunt, Neiseik, saulala "Don't leave me, sun", O Antiphons (7), Oh, it's getting cold, O magnum mysterium, Ave Maria no 2, Salve regina, Ave Maria no 3, Time is endless

Russian Conservatory Chorus : Vissarion Shebalin - Complete A Cappella Choral Cycles

Review: Siberian-born Vissarion Shebalin (1902 1963) is best known for his instrumental music, which includes five symphonies and nine string quartets. Some of these have been heard on CD, but this is the first recording of the eight delightful, and very Russian, choral cycles he wrote from 1949. Shebalin had to endure much hardship; along with friend & colleague Shostakovich he was one of the composers condemned in the infamous 1948 Party congress in Moscow, and in later life he fought to overcome a series of crippling strokes. However, he faced these tribulations with understated but unshakable optimism, as these touching choruses reveal.

Songlist: Message to the Decembrists , Song about Stenka Razin , The Winter Road , Chattering Magpie , Echo, The Warrior's Grave, The Sail, The Cliff , Immortelle, The Wild Grapevine, Wormwood, The Cossack urged on his steed , A Mother's Thoughts of her Son, The Skylark , To a Birch Tree, Spring Beauty, Over the Burial-Mounds, Let Every Hour be Happy!, The Oak, It is fine to stroll in spring

San Antonio Vocal Arts Ensemble : Guadalupe Virgen de los Indios

Review: The Virgin Of Guadalupe (Mexico), according to the account, appeared in a vision in 1531, and inspired many compositions in her honor, fusing the indigenous American and colonial Spanish musics of the period. Though many of the tracks on this CD are accompanied by the traditional instruments of the culture (pre-Columbian flutes, Mexican percussion) the excellence of the seven voices of SAVAE (featured on National Public Radio) makes this a worthy addition to our catalog. The works of Tomas Pascual are featured, as well as Franco and Valeriano; some, such as "Aufer A Nobis Iniquitates," are typical of the vocal polyphony of sixteenth century motets; others, such as "Hoi Nace La Nueba Estiella," are homophonic, with folk dance rhythms and simple tunes. A beautiful recording of great merit.

San Francisco Chamber Singers : Freed From Words

Review: San Francisco-based composer Mark Winges writes music that is both familiar and strange; speaking to our oldest human qualities, beyond words... It embraces the versatility of the human voice: screams, whispers, whistling, muffled garbles, throat singing, speaking, and lyrical singing are all bound together into a tapestry of living, liquid a cappella sound. Think of the mind-blowing choral works of Penderecki, Messiaen, Takemitsu, or Ligeti's brooding score to 2001: A Space Odyssey. Winges' latest CD, Freed from Words expresses the abstract and the specific: Magic Strings places the listener in the swarthy world of a witch's sabbath; The Oh of Moon and Piano illustrates the moon and piano caught up in celestial dance; Haiku Settings unfold pithy sonic snapshots; Freed from Words uses phonemes and other pre-lingual vocal sounds. Composer in residence for the virtuosic San Francisco chamber singers, (three- time winners of ASCAP's "Award for Adventurous Programming of Contemporary Music") Winges seamlessly blends a wide variety of influences into an evocative choral world. Conductor Robert Geary (recently given the "Outstanding Conductorial Achievement" award at the International Children's and Youth Choir Festival) insures that all the singers involved, from children to adult, make the vocal gymnastics sound effortless. This recording will transport anyone with a love of choral music and an open ear.

Songlist: Magic Strings, Haiku Settings - Three Sets, Freed From Words, The Moon - Welcome, Wishes Night, The Oh of Moon and Piano

San Francisco Choral Artists : Music Among Friends onsale

Review: The SFCA has been delighting Bay Area audiences since 1985 with their perfectly-balanced blend of 24 voices, fresh and unusual song selection and elegant presentation of choral classics and new music by contemporary composers. Magen Solomon has been Music Director of the group since 1995, and she also directs the Oakland Symphony Chorus. "Music Among Friends" celebrates the ties of this chamber ensemble with the "lively community of local composers who have generously shared their wonderful music with us." 16 of these 22 works, chosen from live performances of the last 5 years, are by Bay Area composers, many are world premieres and several others have never been commercially recorded. Some of our favorites are a pair by Russell Burnham, "The Dance" and "Sonnet 4: O You Tender Ones," Paul Chihara's "Lie Lightly, Gentle Earth," Allen Shearer's dissonant gem "The Marriage," John Kelley's poignant "When You Are Old," Paul Crabtree's "First and Last Kiss," Wm. Hawley's soaring "Vita de la mia vita," Robert Starey's surprising, powerful "It Is an Easy Thing," Kirke Mechem's beautiful "Loveliest of Trees," Halsey Stevens' "Go, Lovely Rose," Conrad Susa's "The Gallant One" and "The Kings of the Deck" and the lovely hymn, "In the Valley." There is occasional accompaniment, but mostly wonderful a cappella harmonies from this polished, talented ensemble. We loved every cut of "Music Among Friends!"

Songlist: The Dance, Salve Regina , Charm Me Asleep, Sonnet 4: O You Tender Ones , Lolas Epitaph , Lie Lightly Gentle Earth, Sound Of The Sea , The Marriage, Vita De La Mia Vita, When You Are Old, First And Last Kiss , It Is An Easy Thing, A Critical Success, Go Lovely Rose , Lovliest Of Trees, The Gallant One, The Kings Of The Deck , Landscape, O Little Town, In The Valley , Awit Sa Panginoon , The Coventry Carol

San Francisco Symphony Chorus - John Adams : Harmonium

Review: Premiered 19 years ago, Harmonium served notice that America would be able to claim another major composer as its own before history closed the books on the 20th century. Only ten years later, at the debut of The Death of Klinghoffer, John Adams was already a figure of international renown, having been commissioned for new pieces by a formidable number of performing arts institutions throughout the world. These two works - both written to texts, and numbering among the composer's deepest and most emotionally affecting compositions - are bookends to a decade of meteoric ascendence for this Bay Area figure.

Songlist: Negative Love, Because I Could Not Stop For Death, Wild Nights, Chorus of the Exiled Palestinians, Chorus of the Exiled Jews, Ocean Chorus, Night Chorus, Chorus of the Hager and the Angel, Desert Chorus, Day Chorus

Santa Fe Desert Chorale : A Celebration of Hispanic Music

Review: A study of the evolution of musical style in Hispanic churches in the New World reveals a remarkable melding of a number of cultures. Spanish colonists carried the musical traditions of the European Renaissance to the native people of the Americas, and, through time and circumstance, these traditions merged in the American Southwest to create a musical genre with a rich historical grounding. A treasury of sacred works by the finest composers from Spain and the New World - from the Renaissance majesty of Morales and Victoria to the Misa Criolla, one of the 20th century's most beloved choral works. This is the program that was performed for a tour of Northern New Mexico historic churches during the summer of 2005.

Songlist: Misa Criolla - Ariel Ramirez, Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Die, Two Aztec Songs to the Virgin (Don Hernando Franco), Santa Maria yn ilhuicac, Dios itlaconantzine, Sancta Maria, succurre miseris - (Cristobal de Morales), Alleluia! Dic nobis Maria - (Francisco Lopez Capillas), Sanctus and Hosanna - (Francisco Guerrero), In Annuntiatione Benissimae Mariae - (Tomas Luis de Victoria), Egregie Doctor - (Antonio de Salazar/Manuel de Sumaya), Sol-fa de Pedro - (Manuel de Sumaya), In manus tuas - (Sebastian de Vivanco), Sa qui turo zente pleta - (Anonymous)

In addition, 32 Desert Chorale alumni singers - including members of the 1983 inaugural season - joined this season's choir in presenting Miserere, mei Deus. Schola Cantorum of Oxford : Children of Our Time

Review: In 1978 Schola Cantorum of Oxford-the university's acclaimed chamber choir-recorded Tippett's Five Negro Spirituals from A child of our time. Sir Michael wrote, in his sleeve note accompanying the LP release on L'Oiseau Lyre (DSLO 25, re-issued on CD Belart 461 628-2, no longer available): 'I had never heard the complete set till the recording sessions. I then realised that the sound of these songs when sung thus is quite different from their original settings in the oratorio. They became, as it were, the huge voice of a crowd of folk singing together. It should be clear from the above account of all the variety of pieces on this (all-Tippett) disc how remarkable and resilient a group of young singers the Schola Cantorum of Oxford is, under their equally young, gifted conductor Nicholas Cleobury.' Some twenty years later, under Jeremy Summerly, the choir was asked to make a new recording of the Spirituals to mark the ninetieth birthday of the composer, by then the group's long-standing Patron. This new disc-never previously released-is the result of those sessions, where the Tippett works are complemented by recordings of the winning entries in an international composition competition organized by the choir and other works written for it around the same time. And what an astonishing display of choral pyrotechnics this produced. From the seductive intricacies of Mark Edgley Smith's E E Cummings settings, through the blues-infused harmonies of Antony Pitts's polychoral Thou knowest my lying down, to the extended genius of Francis Pott's Amore langueo (containing what Summerly describes as 'one of the great moments in English choral music from any period'), this new disc offers fascinating discoveries to the choral aficionado and seventy minutes of the very finest choral experience to all. All works, apart from the Tippett and Pitts, are first recordings.

Songlist: Thou Knowest My Lying Down, Steal Away, Ave Verum Corpus, Nobody Knows, Echo, Song, Mirage, Go Down, Moses, Now I Lay (With Everywhere Around), Spring! May, Love Is More Thicker Than Forge, O By The By, What A Proud Dreamhorse, By And By, Eres, Deep River, Amore Langueo

Seattle Children's Chorus : Celebrate! onsale

Review: In 1989 Kris Mason and a small, eager group of about 30 young singers from a neighborhood church became a choir and birthed what is now The Seattle Childrens Chorus. What was 30 is now 200 voices strong, and includes four graded levels and two rehearsal locations, making the dream a reality for young musicians all over western Washington. "Celebrate!" is a generous, "best-of" Êcollection of 19 songs, from the group's 2009 20th Anniversary season. Some of our many favorites include Rene Clausen's "All That Hath Life and Breath," David Childs' "Weep No More," David L. Brunner's "Yo Le Canto Todo El Dia," "I Want Jesus to Walk with Me" (written for the SCC's20th Anniversary), Franz Schubert's "Die Forelle, Op 32 (The Trout)," the joyous live cuts "Mairi's Wedding," "Who Can Sail" and Mozart's "The Alphabet," Z. Randall Stroope's "Conversion of Saul," Daniel Gawthrop's "Sing Me to Heaven," the Moses Hogan-arranged spiritual "Elijah Rock, the haunting "Loch Lomond," and a pair by Stephen Paulus, "Pilgrim's Hymn" and "Help Us This Day." There are no weak cuts here, we are simply seeing different facets of the shining diamond that is the Seattle Childrens Chorus. Richly harmonic, mostly accompanied gems from one of the USA's finest, veteran Children's choruses. Settle back and enjoy this beautiful music from Arioso, Brio, Intermezzo, and Camarata, plus three cuts by the massed ensemble, joined by SCC Alumni!

Seattle Pro Musica : Rachmaninov onsale

Review: From 1880 to 1917 was a renaissance in Russian choral music, a great outpouring of sacred compositions by major composers such as Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Chesnokov and Kastalsky. While Sergei Rachmaninov (1873-1943) only wrote a few choral works, they are among the crowning achievements of Russian choral music. "Vsenoshchnoye Bdeniye Op. 37 (Vespers)" encompasses a wealth of moods and emotion, ranging from meditative introspection to praise and proclamation. The 76-strong, award-winning Seattle Pro Musica is the perfect ensemble for this material, dramatically powerful on a piece like "Priidite, poklonimsya," (Come Let Us Worship), sweetly meditative on songs like "Blagoslovi, dushe moya, Gospoda" and "Shestopsalmiye: Slava v vyshnikh bogu" (The Six Psalms: Glory Be to God in the Highest), filled with wonder on "Tropar: Dnes spasneniye" (The Troparion: Thou didst Rise from the Tomb), and joyfully triumphant on "Vzbrannoy voyevode" (To Thee, the Victorious Leader). Truly wonderful, rarely-heard sacred music from one of great composers of all time.

Songlist: Priidite, polonimsya (Come, Let Us Worship), Blagoslovi, dushe moya, Gospoda (Bless the Lord, O My Soul), Blazhen muzh (Blessed is the Man), Svete tikhyi (Gladsome Light), Nyne otpushchayeshi (Lord, Now Lettest Thou Thy Servant Depart), Bogoroditse Devo (Rejoice, O Virgin), Shestopsalmiye: Slava v vyshnikh Bogu (The Six Psalms: Glory to God in the Highest), Khvalite imya Gospodne (Praise the Name of the Lord), Blagosloven yesi, Gospodi (Blessed Art Thou, O Lord), Voskreseniye Khristovo videvshe (Having Beheld the Resurrection of Christ), Velichit dusha moya Gospoda (My Soul Magnifies the Lord), Slavosloviye velikoye (The Great Doxology: Glory to God in the Highest, Tropar: Dnes spaseniye (The Troparion: Today Salvation Has Come), Tropar: Voskres iz groba (The Troparion: Thou didst Rise from the Tomb), Vzbrannoy voyevode (To Thee, the Victorious leader)
