Iowa State Singers : Choral Spectrum 1

Review: Iowa State's most select choral ensemble, the undergraduate Iowa State Singers chooses its membership from about 400 active choristers on campus. Ably directed by Dr. James Rodde, the choir annually presents a 5-concert season, with a repertoire emphasizing the a cappella tradition. "Choral Spectrum I" is a generous collection of 20 songs, from the choir's repertoire from 2001 to 2004, many of them with classical Christian themes, such as Jan P. Sweelinck's "Pseaume 43, Chris Nielsen's Benedictus Dominus, John Tavener's "The Lamb," Emile Desamours' "Alelouya,"Anthony Bruckner's "Locus Iste," Zdenek Lukas' "Magna Est Vis Veritatis," Heinrich Schutz' "Cantate Domino," Josef Swider's "Cantus Gloriosus" and others. Also wonderful are the Moses Hogan-arranged spirituals "Hold On!," "My Soul's Been Anchored" and "The Battle of Jericho," the Alice Parker-arranged "He's the Lily of the Valley," Rene Clausen's "Quicksand Years," Eric Whitacre's "Sleep" and David Dichau's "If Music Be the Food of Love." This is stunningly beautiful material, with perfect leads that soar above the rich harmonies, touching and moving us. Exquisite!

Songlist: Pseaume 43, Benedictus Dominus, The Lamb, Alelouya, A Boy and a Girl, Hold On!, Locus Iste, Oculus non vidit, There Is No Rose, Cantante Domino, Quicksand Years, Mata del Anima Sola, Sleep, My Soul's Been Anchored, Cantus Gloriosus, Ave Maris Stella, If Music Be the Food of Love, He's the Lily of the Valley, The Battle of Jericho

Iowa State Singers : Choral Spectrum 2

Review: "Choral Spectrum II" is the second of an amazing series by this talented collegiate a cappella ensemble, a collection of 18 songs from the choir's 2005-2006 repertoire. Dr. Rodde directs his hand-picked mixed-voice singers through difficult classical Christian material like J.S. Bach's soaring "Der Geist hilft unsrer Schwachheit auf," Pierre Villette's "Jesu, Dulcis Memoria," Felix Mendelssohn's "Im Advent, op 79" and "Weihnachten, op. 79," Roberto Caamano's "Psalm CXVI," William Hawley's "O Maria Maris Stella," Georg Schumann's "Und ob ich schon wanderte" and Vytautas Miskinis' "O Sacrum Convivium" with effortless ease and grace. Other winners are the Moses Hogan-arranged "I'm Gonna Sing 'til the Spirit Moves in My Heart," the Craig Johnson-arranged "Motherless Child," Eric Whitacre's stunning "Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine," and Mark Sirett's lovely "Balulalow." Each one of these 18 cuts is as beautiful and perfect as we could have imagined!

Songlist: Der Geist hilft unsrer Schwachheit auf, Jesu, Dulcis Memoria, Im Advent, op. 79, Weihnachten, op. 79, Psalm CXVI, Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine, Balulalow, I'm Gonna Sing 'til the Spirit Moves in My Heart , Motherless Child, Rotala (from Neslegtais Gredzens), O Maria Maris Stella, Cloudburst, Canamus, amici, canamus, Und ob ich schon wanderte, Haec Dies, O Sacrum Convivium, McKay, With a Lily in Your Hand

Iowa State Singers : Choral Spectrum 3

Review: "Choral Spectrum III" is the last in a remarkable choral trilogy by Iowa State's most select undergraduate choral ensemble, 19 songs from the Singers' repertoire from 2007-2008. The group's emphasis on a cappella renditions of classical Christian pieces is well-represented by "Si ch'io vorrei morire" by Monteverdi, Heinrich Schutz' "Ich bin die Auferstehung," Hans Leo Hassler's "Dixit Maria," Igor Stravinsky's "Ave Maria," Herbert Howells' "Requiem aeternam I," Peter Warlock's "Benedicamus Domino," Frank Martin's "Sanctus Benedictus" and others. A pair of Moses Hogan-arranged spirituals number among our favorites, "Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel" and "Ezekiel Saw de Wheel," as well as the lovely John Rutter-arranged "Black Sheep," Eric Whitacre's lovely "Lux Aurumque," a pair by Johannes Brahms, "Warum ist das Licht gegeben" and "Tafellied," Gyogy Ligeti's stunning, manic "Reggel," and Guido Lopez-Gavilan's spirited "El Guayaboso." This is difficult, demanding material, but the Singers handle it with effortless grace. An impressive, beautiful collection by one of the best choral ensembles we have heard!

Songlist: Si ch'io vorrei morire, Ich bin die Auferstehung, Dixit Maria, Ave Maria, Requiem aeternam I, Reggel, Warum ist das Licht gegeben, Tafellied, All this Night My Heart Rejoices, El Guayaboso, Black Sheep, Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel, Quem vidistis pastores, Lux Aurumque, Benedicamus Domino, Sanctus-Benedictus, The Sweetheart of the Sun, Seek Not Afar for Beauty, Ezekiel Saw de Wheel

Iowa State Statesmen : That Which We Are

Review: We have just listened to a great 3-part series by Dr. Rodde's talented mixed-voice ensemble, the Iowa State Singers, and now we are treated to the Iowa Statesmen, Iowa State's popular men's over 100-voice choir. The two groups share a love of a cappella classical Christian music, such as Jakob Handl's "O Magnum Mysterium" and "Confirma hoc, Deus;" and spirituals such as Stephen Hatfield's joyous "Heaven Somewhere," and the Moses Hogan-arranged "Ev'ry Time I Feel The Spirit." The Statesmen also love folk music, such as "Loch Lomond," Gwenyth Walker's piano-accompanied "Crossing the Bar," the silly, live "Johnny Schmoker," "Cindy," the powerful, rhythmic African song "Noel," and the Russell Robinson-arranged "Ol' Man River." Finally, to remind us that the Statesmen are a collegiate group, there is a rousing collection of ISU School Songs. Dr. Rodde's groups share a rich, spirited sound, soaring leads, and top-drawer song selection, arrangements and direction. It adds up to a beautiful, entertaining collection!

Songlist: O Magnum Mysterium, Confirma hoc, Deus, Zion Hears the Watchmen Singing, The Lord is My Shepherd, Heaven Somewhere, The Pasture, Vinum Bonum, The Quest Unending, Ra-ta-plan, Loch Lomond, El Yivneh Hagalil, Dies Irae, Crossing the Bar, Noel, Ol' Man River, Ev'ry Time I Feel the Spirit, Johnny Schmoker (live), Cindy, ISU School Songs

Kansas City Chorale : Fern Hill

Review: Listening to this new CD was a sublime pleasure, I was immediately struck by the beauty of the choral tone, at once warm and pure. The repertoire is a magnificent blending of the familiar... with previously unrecorded works of John Corigliano, Conrad Susa, and Jean Belmont. This recording is a necessity for all choral conductors. It represents the best of choral singing and introduces some fine new works. Choral Journal

Kansas City Chorale : Life and Breath

Review: Although he writes in all genres, Rene Clausen is today one of America's most popular choral composers, and for more than twenty years he has been the conductor of the internationally acclaimed Concordia Choir of Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. On this release, choral works by Clausen are performed by the Kansas City Chorale, another choir of great international renown, whose recording, with the Phoenix Chorale, of Grechaninov's Passion Week won a Grammy award in 2008, in the category Best Classical Recording, Engineering. 'Set me as a Seal' is arguably the composer's best-known work, and has long been popular at weddings, funerals, and in the concert repertoire. Clausen has described the work as 'various kinds of discussions between God and humans, both from the human aspect and from the God aspect, so a lot of variations... of love, of disappointment, of anxiety, of doubt'. All that hath life and breath is one of Clausen's earliest works, and a favourite of choirs across the world. The Mass for Double Choir was commissioned by the Kansas City Chorale. The composer, who had never written a mass before, looked on it as an 'interesting challenge'. In the work emotions ebb and flow kaleidoscopically, taking the listener from the strength of the unison writing at the opening, to the sorrowful falling lines of the Crucifixion of Christ and the bubbling, dancing figures for the Resurrection. Expressions of praise spill forward atop one another in the Sanctus, a choir of angels too exuberant to be contained.

Songlist: All that Hath Life and Breath Praise the Lord, O magnum mysterium, The Tyger, The Lamb, Mass: Kyrie, Mass: Gloria, Mass: Credo, Mass: Sanctus, Mass: Agnus Dei, Magnificat, Prayer, O vos omnes, A New Creation: Set me as a seal

Kansas City Chorale : Nativitas

Review: A program of Christmas music by American composers, the Kansas City Chorale sings pieces from the late nineteenth century to the present. Composers include Ned Rorem, Norman Dello Joio and Charles Ives. This recording also contains several premier recordings, including "Nativitas" by Jean Belmont. This cycle of eight choral cameos depicts the ceremony of Christmas with texts from the fourth through seventeenth centuries. According to the composer, "The intent in "Nativitas" is to create a musical shape which conveys some of the anticipation, reverence, mysticism and celebration surrounding the Birth of Jesus Christ." This is a great alternative to traditional Christmas recordings.

Songlist: Three Mystical Carols, In the Time of Softest Snow , Shout the Glad Tidings , Silent Night, Nativitas , Love Came Down at Christmas, A Christmas Carol , Three Shepherd Carols , The Holy Infant's Lullaby, There Is No Rose , I Saw Three Ships , Sweet Was the Song the Virgin Sung , "Silent Night" from Three Carols, Op. 20

Kantorei : Christmas Night

Review: Kantorei began in 1997 as a group of 6 friends who got together to sing Christmas carols. The group has grown to a 32-voice mixed ensemble, attracting some of the best vocal talents. From medieval texts to 20th century tonalities, the Christmas journey begins with "Star in the East," a suite of 3 dramatic Appalachian carols, accompanied by hammered dulcimer, including "Rise Up Shepherd," which was originally published as a slave song in 1867. Herbert Howells' "Long, Long Ago," John Paynter's "The Rose," a lilting, joyous "Sing We Now of Christmas," a lovely soprano solo on "Some Children See Him," a fine "Ding Dong! Merrily On High," Lauridsen's "O Magnum Mysterium," Rutter's sweet "There Is A Flower," a moody "Carol Of The Birds" and Robt. Young's "There Is No Rose of Such Virtue"-this collection welcomes the diverse spectrum of Christmas sentiment across miles and centuries. Beautiful and recommended.

Songlist: Star in the East, Long, Long Ago , Jesus, Jesus Rest Your Head , Ave Maria Stella , The Rose , Sing We Know of Christmas , Some Children See Him, O Little Town of Bethlhem (Kenneth Jennings), Ding Song! Kantorei : Little Tree

Review: The perfect way to enjoy the holiday season, little tree features Kantorei's favorite live recordings from their last several Christmas concerts. Featured on recording are two wonderful settings of e.e. cummings' holiday text, 'little tree.' The first, by composer Steven Heitzeg, features the choir accompanied by harp in a soft, contemplative setting. Heitzeg's composition is contrasted by that of world-renowned composer Eric Whitacre, who sets the text for choir with piano accompaniment in a warm, joyous setting. Also included on the CD are several heart-warming arrangements of familiar holiday carols including 'I Saw Three Ships,' 'Away in a Manger,' and audience favorite, 'Silent Night.' Sure to become a holiday classic, little tree will no doubt usher in the warmth and joy of the Christmas season.

Songlist: The Exaltation of Christ, The Rune of Hospitality, Calm on the Listening Ear of Night, Gaudete, What Sweeter Music?, Sweeter Still, Little Tree, Somerset Wassail, A Stable Lamp is Lighted, Mary's Lullaby, The Hills are Bare at Bethelehem, Little Tree, Little Lamb, Ding Dong! Kantorei : Pillars Of Light

Review: Pillars of Light is a collection of pieces by Rene Clausen, Morten Lauridsen and Eric Whitacre. Lauridsen's "Ave Maria" is absolutely gorgeous with its indulgent harmonies. "Veni" was written by Clausen for Kantorei and is premiered here. Whitacre's "i thank you god for most this amazing day" is a very tranquil setting of the e.e. cummings poem. All of these pieces are great examples of the beauty that can come from modern choral compositions. The warm rich often dissonant sounds envelop the listener.

Songlist: Les Chansons des Roses:, En Une Seule Dleur, Contri Qui, Rose, Do To Reve Trop Plein, La Rose Complete, Dirait-On, Three Whitman Settings (from "Leaves of Grass"):, A Noiseless Patient Spider, Quicksand Years, The Last Invocation, Lux Aeterna: III. Esteemed director Richard Larson has been a major factor in the group's rise. "Home" is the group's fifth very good CD, and is a collection of 21 folk songs and spirituals. Picking favorites is not easy, there are excellent solos on "Let Me Fly ," "Dere's No Hidin' Place," "Ezekiel Saw de Wheel " and "City Called Heaven." Folk tunes "Black is the Color," "Danny Boy," and "Wearing of the Green " are wonderful. Los Angeles Chamber Singers : Padilla - Music of the Mexican Baroque

Review: Los Angeles Chamber Singers' Cappella was founded by director Peter Rutenberg in 1993 and performs a cappella musical literature from the 15th, 16th and early 17th centuries, in period vocal style. Many of the 19 mixed-voice singers are accomplished soloists, studio musicians, composers and choral directors in their own right. In addition to standard masterworks of the period by Lassus, Palestrina, Byrd, Victoria, Tallis, Josquin and others, the ensemble enjoys seeking out and performing significant but rarely heard, or recently rediscovered works. There are 13 pieces here by Juan Gutierrez de Padilla (1590-1664), who is rightly remembered as a master polychoralist, intense contrapuntalist and richly colorful harmonist. His work is seen as the first flowerings of Mexico's Golden Age, which reached full bloom with the music of Zumaya and Jerusalem 100 years later. "Deus in adiutorium meum intende," the five wonderfully harmonic movements ("Kyrie," "Gloria," "Credo," "Sanctus" and "Agnus Dei") of "Missa Ego flos campi," "Versa est in luctum," "Lamentations for Maundy Thursday," "Velum templi scissum est" and "Mirabilia testimonia tua" - these are soaring harmonic poems, designed to be sung in a cathedral's vast acoustics, to allow the worshippers to close their eyes and hear the sounds of angels. Extensive liner notes translate the lyrics and include a comprehensive history of the composer. Stunningly beautiful!

Songlist: Deus in adiutorium meum intende, Missa Ego flos campi:, Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei , Circumdederunt me dolores mortis, Versa est in luctum, Transfige, dulcissime Domine, Lamentations for Maundy Thursday, Velum templi scissum est, Vidi turbam magnam, Mirabilia testimonia tua

Los Angeles Chamber Singers : Romancero Gitano

Review: The Castelnuovo-Tedesco work comes as one of my bigger surprises of recent times: written in 1951 upon powerful and emotional texts by Garcia Lorca (translations included in the CD booklet) Romancero Gitano, op. 152 proves to be genuinely attractive work, its wide guitaristic range well essayed by Gregory Newton, whose style suits well the composer's familiar refinement and musical craftsmanship. Is this song accompaniment? Or is it a concerto with voices instead of instruments? Whichever way you look at it, here is an interesting and substantial piece by one of the guitar's 20th century luminaries. Newton is to be congratulated on this revelation (for me, at least), his accomplished playing complementing a fine choir and thus providing a most listenable and substantial item with a real difference. A fascinating timelessness pervades Morten Lauridsen's purely vocal Chansons based on poems by Rilke: simply put, they are quite beautiful in both construction and execution, the eventual arrival of the piano in the fifth (and last) a miniature masterstroke. The Samuel Barber work is as rich as it is brief, while the set of madrigals by Halsey Stevens reveals a fine sonority, as does the group of odes by Randall Thompson: the notes mention that he felt that "a composer's first responsibility is... to write music that will reach and move the hearts of his listeners in his own day." A not unworthy aspiration, and with composition of this ilk it is easy to see how he could justifiably have had the confidence to utter such words. John Chorbajian's Bitter for Sweet, a setting of a Christina Rossetti poem, concludes and - like the music throughout this disc - was all the more touching for its stringency, quite delightful. So, there's only guitar on the Castelnuovo-Tedesco, but that in itself is worth the admission fee: elsewhere the felicitous blend of fine music and equally fine singing makes this CD a pleasing surprise, one to recommend wholeheartedly.

Songlist: Baladilla de los tres rios, La Guitarra, Punal, Procesion - Paso - Saeta, Memento, Baile, Crotalo, En Une Seule Fleur, Contre Qui, Rose, De Ton Reve Trop Plein, La Rose Complete, Dirait-On, Sure On this Shinging Night Op. 12, No. 3, Weepe, o mine eyes, Like as the culver on the bared bough, Go. Los Angeles Master Chorale : Argento - Durufle

Review: Maestro Salamunovich conducts the Master Chorale and Sinfonia Orchestra in two true masterworks of the late 20th century choral literature. Of his work "Te Deum, (Verba Domini cum verbis populi)" Minnesota based composer Dominick Argento has written that the words are, as the subtitle implies, written in a manner which associates six sections of Middle English lyrics with the six Latin texts. It was composed thus to present a sense of the learned "church style" justaposed with more musical elements found in the populace of the day. Maurice Durufle's Messe (Mass) "Cum Jublio" written in 1966 was scored for a unison choir of men's voices and organ or orchestra. While having five movements they are not usual and throughout there permeates plainchant melodies from the Gregorian Mass IX, "Cum Jubilo." Glorious!

Songlist: Te Deum, Te Deum Iaudamus, Te gloriosus Apostolorum, Patrem immensae majestasis, Tu Rex gloriae, Christie, Tu ad dexteram Dei sedes, Salvum fac populum tuum, Messe "Cum Jubilo," Op.11, Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Benedictus, Agnus Dei

Los Angeles Master Chorale : Glass / Salonen

Review: The acclaimed Los Angeles Master Chorale, conducted by Grant Gershon, brings us the music of Phillip Glass and Esa-Pekka Salonen. Featured is Itaipu by Glass, an ecstatic piece framing the ancient folklore of South America's Guarani Indians against a massive hydroelectric dam at Itaipu on the Brazil/Paraguay border. "Itaipu" is divided into four parts, "Mato Grosso," "The Lake," "The Dam" and "To The Sea." Also featured is the world premiere recording of Salonen's "Two Songs to Poems of Ann Jaderlund." The composer's vision of love as described in these poems is dynamic, richly romantic and enthralling - a tour de force of the sonic capabilities of the 111-strong chorus. Cutting-edge choral music, orchestrally accompanied, stunning and magnificent.

Songlist: Itaipu (1989):, Mato Grosso, The Lake, The Dam, To the Sea, Two Songs to Poems of Ann Jaderlund (2000), -Djupt i rummet, -Kyss min mun

Los Angeles Master Chorale : Lauridsen: Lux Aeterna

Review: Morton Lauridsen is Composer-in-Residence for the Master Chorale and Chair of the Dept. of Composition at USC. These original works are performed by the Chorale under the direction of Paul Salamunovich. Accompanied by the Sinfonia Orchestra, this recording was Grammy nominated, and has been in high demand since its release. Containing works written in the past decade as well as three world premiere recordings (seventeen tracks in all) it begins with the self-titled "Lux Aeterna," a five movement work that draws upon Latin texts, each containing references to Light. Next are the exquisite "Chansons Des Roses," set to poems of Rainier Maria Rilke. "Ave Maria" is an a cappella motet, and "Mid-Winter Songs" is a choral cycle using winter as its unifying motif. The result is ethereal, inspiring and above all, flawless.

Songlist: Introitus, In Te, Domine, Speravi, O Nata Lux, Veni, Sacte Spiritus, Agnus Die- Lux Eterna, En Une Seule Fleur, Contre Qui, Rose, De Ton Reve Trop Plein, La Rose Complete, Dirait-On, Ave Maria, Lament For Pasiphae, Like Snow, She Tells Her Love While Half Asleep, Mid-Winter Walking, Intercesson In Late October, O Magnum Mysterium

Los Angeles Master Chorale : Nico Muhly: A Good Understanding

Review: Nico Muhly is one of the brightest and most promising American composers to emerge in the early 21st century. He was born in 1981 and wrote the choral pieces recorded here in his early to mid-twenties. As a child he sang in men and boys choirs, so the classics of the English choral repertoire from the Renaissance to the present had a formative impact on his musical thinking, and that deep familiarity is demonstrated in the fluency of his choral writing. These are exceptionally appealing new settings of texts that are mostly familiar -- the Mass, Magnificat, and Nunc dimittis -- as well as several more obscure texts and a secular set using Whitman. Bright Mass with Canons is one of Muhly's most frequently performed works, and rightly so. The piece shows his mastery of both contemporary choral writing and the tight canonic procedures of composers like Tallis and Taverner. It is bright in its clarity and the mood of openness and vitality that it emanates, and in the inventive sparkle of the quirky organ accompaniment. The motet Senex puerem portabat is hugely impressive, with an urgently yearning opening that builds to a wildly ecstatic climax. The remaining works are also appealing and expertly crafted, but for the most part lack the distinctiveness and focus of the mass or the motet. The text setting is always exemplary, but some of the pieces sound like the music is driven only by the text, without meaningful larger musical structures holding them coherently together. Like so many American composers who came after the ascendency of minimalism and who write in an essentially tonal idiom, Muhly grapples (but perhaps doesn't grapple forcefully enough) with the long shadows of Steve Reich and John Adams. It's too easy to hear the sonorities and figurations of Reich's The Desert Music and Adams' Klinghoffer choruses in some of these pieces. Nonetheless, Muhly's achievement is impressive and he has plenty of time to develop a distinctive individual voice. The Los Angeles Master Chorale, led by Grant Gershon and joined on one track by the Los Angeles Children's Chorus, sings passionately and with great commitment. The fresh youthfulness of their sound is an ideal match for the energy of Muhly's music. The pieces are accompanied by various forces, including organ, percussion, brass, and strings. Decca's sound is clean, clear, and warm, with excellent balance.

Songlist: Bright Mass With Canons- Part I, Bright Mass With Canons - Part II, Bright Mass With Canons - Part III, Bright Mass With Canons - Part IV, First Service (Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis), Senex Puerum Portabat, A Good Understanding, Expecting The Main Things From You

Los Angeles Master Chorale : Philip Glass: Itaipu and Songs A Cappella

Review: Itaipu is a large-scale work for chorus and orchestra set to a Guarani text. Itaipu is the world's largest dam located on the border between Paraguay and Brazil. The piece is cast in four movements: Mato Grosso, The Lake, The Dam, To the Sea. The piece is part of the composer's interest Brazil, but also in indigenous cultures of the Americas which continues to this day. Commissioned and written for the Quebec Festival 1534-1984, Three Songs for Chorus a Cappella presents three pieces set to poems by three different North American poets. The first song, There are Some Men, is by singer-songwriter and poet Leonard Cohen (whose poetry was later the basis of an evening length song-cycle by Glass titled Book of Longing.) The second song, Quand les Hommes vivront d'Amour, by singer-songwriter/poet/artist Raymond Levesque is a wish for peace and happiness through love. The third song, Pierre de Soleil, by poet Octavio Paz is mediation on existential selflessness ("les autres qui me donnent l'existence.")

There are other traditional carols such as "Joy, Joy, Joy," "Wexford Carol," "Angels We Have Heard on High" and "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel;" classical songs like Felix Mendelssohn's "Thanks Be to God" and Guy Forbes' "O Magnum Mysterium," and pieces by contemporary composers, Quittez, pasteurs" and "Gloria" by John Rutter, "There is No Rose" by Rene Clausen, "Nowel" by Randall Thompson, Jackson Berkey's "Gloria in Excelsis Deo," and F. Melius Christiansen's lovely "Praise to the Lord." There is an organ solo of Claude Balbastre's "Ou s'en vont ces gais bergers," and "Agincourt Song" by the wonderful Symphony Orchestra. In terms of pure musical magnificence, celebration, wonder and beauty, there really is nothing that compares with "Christmas at Luther!"

Luther College Nordic Choir : Christmas at Luther 2010

Review: In the jewel box, behind the "Christmas at Luther 2010" CD is a panoramic photograph, with a bird's eye view of the annual event held at Iowa's Luther College-showing the giant pipe organ, the huge, colorful mural, and the massed music groups: The Symphony Orchestra, Nordic Choir, Cantorei, Cathedral Choir, Aurora, Norsemen and Luther Ringers. One of the largest collegiate music programs in the world, the Luther campus is alive with the sounds of six choirs, three bands, three orchestras, two jazz bands and more than 1,000 student musicians! Here are 20 live cuts, most of them accompanied, that tell the story of the Nativity in music. The spoken narration notable in past events has given way to some of the most beautiful choral Christmas music imaginable: just listen to the dramatic, wonderful "Hope for Resolution," Vivaldi's "Gloria in Excelsis," Mendelssohn's "There Shall a Star From Jacob Come Forth," "The First Nowell" and "Gloria," all sung by the combined choirs, Symphony Orchestra (sometimes with organ). This is music that rivals Handl's "Messiah" in pure, beautiful power. The Cathedral Choir's lovely spiritual "I Believe This Is Jesus," John Rutter's "Angel's Carol," aptly performed by Aurora, Cantorei and the Symphony Orchestra, the Norsemen's rhythmic, harmonic performance of the traditional Kenyan carol "Wana Baraka"-this is great stuff! "Christmas at Luther" is one of the greatest annual musical traditions in the United States, come join in the celebration!

Songlist: O Come, All Ye Faithful , Hope for Resolution, Gloria In Excelsis (from Gloria), Angel's Carol, Masters in This Hall, I Believe This Is Jesus, Sanctus ( from Messe en Sol Majeur), There Shall a Star From Jacob Come Forth (from Christus, Opus 97), Nocturne (from Incidental Music to A Midsummer Nights Dream), Choral Fanfare for Christmas, Veni, Veni Emmanuel, Sanctus-Benedictus (Mass No. 6), Infant Holy, Infant Lowly, Ring Out, Wild Bells!, What Shall We Give?, Wanna Baraka, What Sweeter Music, The First Nowell, Fanfare and Toccata on Hark! A Thrilling Voice is Sounding, Gloria

Luther College Nordic Choir : Everlasting God

Review: Following in the very large footsteps, and the 57-year tenure of Weston Noble at Decorah, IA's Luther College, Dr. Craig Arnold returned to serve as director of choral activities, conductor of the Nordic Choir, and professor of music at Luther. "Everlasting God" is a spirited collection of 20 songs, which highlight the rich, powerful sound of this great choir. Rene Clausen's "Laudate," two selections from Herbert Howells' "Requiem," the wonderful 6-part "Liebeslieder Walzer, op. 52" by Brahms, the Stephen Paulus-arranged traditional hymn, "We Gather Together," the 2-part "The Lord is the Everlasting God" by Kenneth Jennings, Ola Gjeilo's haunting "Ubi Caritas," the heart-tugging "Danny Boy" and the spiritual "Wade in the Water" are favorites. There is some light piano and organ accompaniment. Luther College places a focus and emphasis on music instruction and performance found in few other institutions, and that's why we consistently hear recordings of the highest quality-the Nordic Choir is simply one of the best in the world!

Songlist: Laudate, If Ye Love Me, Psalm 23, Requiem aeternam, My Spirit Sang All Day, Liebeslieder Waltzer, op. 52, Rede Madchen, Am Gesteine rauscht die Flut, Wie des Abends schone Rote, Nein, es ist nicht auszukommen, Sieh', wie ist die Welle klar, Es bebet das Gestrauche, We Gather Together, The Lord is The Everlasting God, Movement I, Movement II, O Day Full of Grace, In Paradisum, Ubi Caritas, Danny Boy, Wade in the Water, O Lord God
