Dale Warland Singers : Walden Pond

Review: 1975 Pulitzer Prize in Music winner and winner of Fulbright and Guggenheim awards , Minnesota composer Dominick Argento marked his diamond jubilee in 2003 with performances of his works by the numerous musical organizations, including the Dale Warland Singers, who have commissioned him across the decades. First we have the first piece written for the group by Argento in 1981, "I Hate and I Love (Odi et Amo)," which includes percussion. Then "A Toccata of Galuppi's, a rhapsody for chamber choir, harpsichord and string quartet, with poetry by Robert Browning. The final piece, "Walden Pond," puts to music the outdoor musings of 19th century author and naturalist, Henry David Thoreau, including "The Pond," "Angling," "Observing," "Extolling" and "Walden Revisited." All songs are lightly accompanied. Extensive liner notes tell us all about the composer, the music and the group. Complex harmonies, dramatic phrasing--very few groups would attempt to perform this music; the DWS do it justice with professional elegance. Excellent!

Songlist: I Hate and I Love (Odi et Amo) (1981), I Hate and I love, Let us live, my Clodia, and let us love, Greetings, miss, with nose not small, My woman says she will be no one's, Was it a lioness from the mountains of Libya, You promise me, my dearest life, Wrethced Catullus, put an end to this madness, I hate and I love, A Toccata of Galuppi's (1989), Walden Pond (1996):, The Pond, Angling, Observing, Extolling, Walden's Revisited

Esoterics : Antiphonia - Masterpieces for double chorus

Review: ANTIPHONIA captures the acclaimed program that The Esoterics reprised in Seattle, Portland, Tacoma and Everett in November 1999. ANTIPHONIA consists of six choral masterpieces, each from a different nationality - Swedish and Swiss, Finnish, and French, British and American - and each with a unique rendition of antiphony (from the Greek antiphon, "singing across"). The Seattle Post-Intelligencer deemed The Esoterics' performance of ANTIPHONIA a "triumph" and a program "as difficult as any have undertaken." The journal 21st Century Music praised the sound of the group as "sublime, pure, luxuriant, velvety ... The initial phrases gave me chills; it was as if angels were singing."

Songlist: Kyrie- Messe pour double choeur, Gloria - Messe pour double choeur, Credo - Messe pour double choeur, Sanctus - Messe pour double choeur, Agnus Dei - Messe pour double choeur, Ancient Roses - Echoes from the Heart, Longing, Dreaming - Echoes from the Heart, I Remember - Echoes from the Heart, Cantico del sole, ...a riveder le stelle, Bientot - Figure humaine, Le role de femmes - Figure humaine, Aussi bas que le silence - Figure humaine, Patience - Figure humaine, Premiere marche la voix d'un autre - Figure humaine, Un loup - Figure humaine, Un feu sans tache - Figure humaine, Liberte - Figure humaine, Pseudo-yoik , Antics

Esoterics : Barber - Collected Choral Works

Review: This recording was made in conjunction with The Esoterics' centennial concert of the same name, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the American composer Samuel Barber. This is the first recording by an American choral ensemble to feature all of Barber's works for a cappella chorus. Barber is one of the most important figures in American composition, having twice won the Pulitzer Prize. Purchase your copy of this historic recording by one of the country's premiere vocal ensembles for contemporary choral music! This recording, made in the lush acoustics of Seattle's Holy Rosary Catholic Church, is the first recording to bring together God's grandeur and Motetto on words from the book of Job, which Barber had intended to be performed as a single cycle. Also included in this recording are three choral works that are normally performed with instruments (Easter chorale, A stopwatch and an ordnance map, and Sure on this shining night). For these three pieces, the ensemble sings the instrumental parts (for brass, timpani and piano) as well as the choral parts. This recording, directed by The Esoterics' Founding Director Eric Banks, is an excellent interpretation of Barber's neo-romantic style and was engineered using binaural recording technology.

Songlist: There the wicked cease - Motetto, Call now! - Motetto, God's grandeur - Motetto, Praise him! - Motetto, Twelfth night, Easter chorale, Heaven-haven, Let down the bars, O death, The virgin martyrs, A stopwatch and an ordnance map, To be sung on the water, Mary Hynes - Reincarnations, Anthony O Daly - Reincarnations, The coolin - Reincarnations, Agnus Dei, Sure on this shining night, Happy birthday, Sam Barber

Esoterics : Beata - Songs to the blessed virgin

Review: The Esoterics' first CD, BEATA, celebrates the Virgin Mary as a symbol of purity and devotion, as well as an inspiration for centuries of music. Comprising eighteen compositions from nearly as many countries, this recording presents unaccompanied choral music about Mary from every continent and each decade of this century. This contemporary repertoire is interspersed with strophes of the sequence, O virga ac diadema, by the renowned medieval mystic, poet, and abbess, Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179). BEATA was originally performed and recorded in July 1997 (after our highly acclaimed performance of the same title) in a true-to-performance style, where each piece is heard as it was performed, and no gratuitous editing occurred during the mastering process.

Songlist: Hymne a la Vierge, Ave maris stella, Hil dig, havets stjerne, I, Tota pulchra es, Maria, Canticum Mariae Virginis, I beheld her, beautiful as a dove, II, Ave Maria, cheiaa di graca, Ave Maria, cheia di graca, Magnificat, O magnum mysterium, Es ist ein Reis entsprungen, Morning-song for the Christ Child, III, Ave Maria, gratia plena, Ave Maria, gratia plena, Maria durch ein Dornwald ging, IV, Bogoroditse dyevo, raduisya, Bogoroditse dyevo, raduisya, Mater ora filium

Esoterics : Elementia - The elements in their season

Review: ELEMENTIA, the third release from The Esoterics, is a double CD set that encompasses some of the best works from Season 2000. With more than two hours of music, ELEMENTIA features world premiere recordings by Northwest composers Donald Skirvin, Garrett Fisher, and David Asplin. Over the course of the year 2000, The Esoterics celebrated each of the four ancient elements from various vantage points, presenting the sounds and stories of different cultures - weaving music and mythology, science and sociology - to create a broader appreciation of EARTH, WATER, AIR, and FIRE. ELEMENTIA is a compilation of works from these concerts, with world premieres and 20th century classics. The repertoire spans continents and styles, with a range of new favorites and choral classics from Britten, Carter, Pizzetti, Stravinsky, Barber, and more. Kim Davenport of new-music.org said of the EARTH concert performed in Tacoma, "Seldom is one treated to a choral ensemble of such skill, with stunning balance, rhythmic precision, warmth of sound, a wonderfully broad dynamic range, and impeccable diction in every language sung."

Esoterics : Immaginosa - American inspiration and the modern madrigal

Review: The Esoterics' fifth CD, IMMAGINOSA features premieres by William Hawley and Stephen Paulus and other pieces that represent springtime song cycles on love and life. Recorded after the IMMAGINOSA concert series in May 2004, this CD features several of The Esoterics' favorite cycles. Ross Lee Finney's Spherical madrigals resonates with the exploration and creativity of the Age of Reason, and Irving Fine's artful cycle of six Ben Jonson poems - The hour glass - traverses the evolution of love during the human lifetime. The second half of IMMAGINOSA will either put spring in your step or send you off into blissful dreams. First, revel in recordings of two premiere performances: Four reveries by New York composer William Hawley, followed by a spring madrigal, Now is the gentle season, by Minnesota composer Stephen Paulus. Next, enjoy two contrasting settings of Emily Dickinson by Elliott Carter - Heart not so heavy as mine and Musicians wrestle everywhere. Finally, immerse yourself in two cycles of spectacular strophes by Sara Teasdale: The winds of May by San Francisco composer Kirke Mechem, and Donald Skirvin's Alchemy, which was commissioned by The Esoterics.

Songlist: O know to end as to begin- The hour-glass (1949), Have you seen the white lily grow? - The hour-glass (1949), O do not wanton with those eyes - The hour-glass (1949), Against jealousy - The hour-glass (1949), Lament - The hour-glass (1949), The hour-glass - The hour-glass (1949), Echo - Four reveries (1995), Remembrance - Four reveries (1995), My river runs to thee - Four reveries (1995), Meeting at night - Four reveries (1995), Heart not so heavy as mine (1938), Now is the gentle season (1978), Love is a circle - Spherical Madrigals (1947), When again all these rare perfections meet - Spherical Madrigals (1947) , All-circling point - Spherical Madrigals (1947), His body was an orb - Spherical Madrigals (1947), On a round ball - Spherical Madrigals (1947), Nor doe I doubt - Spherical Madrigals (1947), See how the Earth - Spherical Madrigals (1947), Musicians wrestle everywhere (1945), The tune - The winds of May (1965), Let it be forgotten - The winds of May (1965), Over the roofs - The winds of May (1965), I shall not care - The winds of May (1965), Song - The winds of May (1965), Living gold - Alchemy (2002), Cups of fire - Alchemy (2002) , Jewelled blaze - Alchemy (2002), O Beauty - Alchemy (2002)

Esoterics : Mandala - Meditations on the wholeness of being

Review: From the Sanskrit word for 'circle' or 'completion,' the title of this recording refers to a wide variety of symbols that prevail throughout several spiritual traditions. In more contemporary Western society, the concept of the mandala is used to describe the personal world in which one lives: the activities and interests in which one partakes, as well as those with whom one chooses to associate. MANDALA: such an all encompassing word makes a fitting title for a recording (a CD is a circle, after all!) of choral music themed around meditations on the wholeness of being. Singing in a variety of Eastern languages, The Esoterics have given voice to meditations of several faiths and spiritual practices, including verses inspired by Sufism (by director Eric Banks), Hinduism (by Roger Nelson and Diane Thome), Taoism (by Linda Waterfall, Mark Adamo, and Stephen Paulus), and Buddhism (by John Muehleisen and Donald Skirvin). Each of these eight self-published choral meditations has been composed in the last 15 years, and seven of these were first premiered in concert by The Esoterics. With MANDALA, The Esoterics has taken another step in its mission: to create and perpetuate a cappella choral music that embraces and illuminates texts found outside the Judeo-Christian canon, and gives voice to poetry, philosophy, and spiritual writings from around the world.

Songlist: Javdani (2003), Attaining immortality (2005), All This , Guang, Supreme Virtue, And even my soul remains quiet - Meditations on Li Po (1994), I lift my eyes to watch the mountain moon - Meditations on Li Po (1994), And now the last cloud drains away - Meditations on Li Po (1994), Prologue: Clouds and Moon - Watching the Moon go down (2001), Meditations on the Moon - Watching the Moon go down (2001), Epilogue: The Moon in my heart -Watching the Moon go down (2001), I take refuge - Songs of Enlightenment (2005), Verses and mantras of compassion - Songs of Enlightenment (2005), The fleeting world - Songs of Enlightenment (2005)

Esoterics : Notturna - Odes and airs for the ephemeral hours

Review: NOTTURNA, the title of The Esoterics' seventh CD recording, is the feminine form of the of Italian noun notturno, which refers to a musical composition that is inspired by the night, the "nocturne." A word employed by such diverse composers as Mozart, Chopin, Shostakovich, and Fine, nocturne first applied to 18th-century ensemble pieces in several movements; in the Romantic era, the nocturne evolved to its more familiar form, a single-movement work for piano. Olli Kortekangas' Three romances were performed by The Esoterics at the Harald Andersen International Choir Competition in Helsinki, Finland in September 2006. Lajos Vass Nocturne, the namesake of this recording, recounts the quiet ecstasy of Verlaine's moonlit midnight. The other four pieces on this CD were commissioned by the ensemble in 2001, and are intended to commend our celestial company of sun, moon, and stars - Asplin's Of a turning wheel turns to the ancient wisdom of the Upanishads and Vedas, Rumi, ibn Ezra, Ptolemy, and Tagore; Skirvin's ...stars to hold relies upon the star-gazing strophes of Sara Teasdale; Mantyjarvi's Kosijat echoes the folky flavor of the Finnish national epic, the Kanteletar; and Eric Banks' Celestial Wystan finds inspiration in the verses of WH Auden.

Songlist: Cherry robbers - Three Romances (1995), Green - Three Romances (1995), Old song - Three Romances (1995), A thousand rays - Of a turning wheel (2001), Walk to the well - Of a turning wheel (2001), O resplendent night - Of a turning wheel (2001), Warm - Celestial Wystan (2001), Make this night - Celestial Wystan (2001), The more loving one - Celestial Wystan (2001), Nocturne (1968), Stars - ...stars to hold (2001/2006), I know the stars - ...stars to hold (2001/2006), Winter stars - ...stars to hold (2001/2006), The starry places - ...stars to hold (2001/2006), Give me your stars to hold - ...stars to hold (2001/2006), Intro - Kosijat (2001), Aurinko - Kosijat (2001), Kuu - Kosijat (2001), Pohjantahti - Kosijat (2001)

Esoterics : Ourania - Dreams that reach across the heavens

Review: In OURANIA: Dreams that reach across the heavens, The Esoterics features eight choral works that explore the concept of 'the heavens.' Named for the Greek muse of astronomy, OURANIA ranges in scope from the precise calculations of science, to the lavish polyphony of late Romanticism, and the angelic inspiration of Biblical imagery - offering several perspectives on how we have come to understand the sun, moon, and stars. Included in this recording are Richard Strauss' 16-part choral tone poems Zwei Gesange (Two songs) (Op 34): Der abend (The evening), Friedrich von Schiller's description of Phaebus Apollo, whose chariot draws the sun to setting; and Hymne, Friedrich Ruckert's proclamations of celestial ecstasy, in which the heavens join Jacob as he celebrates the return of his prodigal son. Also featured on this recording are two works by The Esoterics' founder Eric Banks, and these highlight the intersection between the hard science of astronomy (Banks' course of study while at Yale) with music. In his Onomata planeton, a choral intonation of the planets and moons in the solar system, the score is based entirely on the comparative mass, velocity, and period of revolution of these heavenly bodies. Banks' second piece, Tabula siderum zodiaco, draws a similar parallel between music and astronomy, as he chorally maps the 928 stars of the zodiac, by superimposing the twelve constellations of the zodiac upon the twelve key signatures of the "circle of fifths."

Songlist: Der abend , Song of Apollo (2001/2006), Triumf att finnas till (1995), Tabula siderum zodiaco (2002), Onomata planeton (2002), Hymn to the moon (2001/2006), I. Esoterics : Penitentia - Ancient petitions for mercy and peace

Review: The Esoterics is proud to present PENITENTIA, its fourth CD that features works of the Lenten liturgy by Poulenc, Pizzetti, d'Hollander, Herbolsheimer, and more. Francis Poulenc's Quatre motets pour un temps du penitence and Bern Herbolsheimer's Seven last words depict the final moments of Christ's agony. As the cloak of night descends upon this Lenten vigil, Tre composizioni corali by Italian composer Ildebrando Pizzetti and Trois nocturnes by Belgian composer Geert d'Hollander remind us that oppression often inspires the most profound spiritual contemplation. One eloquent result of such reflection was Precatio pro pace, an ancient poem by Janus Pannonius set by the Hungarian composer Miklos Paszti. Another was the unparalleled Pro pace motets of South African composer John Joubert, who designed a triptych around the poems of three medieval mystics - Scottus, Vulgarius, and Abelard - each offering a personal plea for peace: a prayer for mercy from the universal destruction of the Black Death, a lament on the day mankind invented weaponry to harm itself, and an ode that recounts Christ's Passion and Resurrection as the triumph of non-violent protest and ultimate pacifist victory.

Songlist: Cade la sera - Tre composizioni corali (1942- 1943), Ululate, quia prope est dies Domini - Tre composizioni corali (1942- 1943), Recordare, Domine - Tre composizioni corali (1942- 1943), Timor et tremor - Quatre motets pour un temps de penitence (1938-1939), Vinea mea electa - Quatre motets pour un temps de penitence (1938-1939), Tenebrae factae sunt - Quatre motets pour un temps de penitence (1938-1939), Tristis est anima mea - Quatre motets pour un temps de penitence (1938-1939), Father, forgive them - Seven last words (1998-2000), Amen dico tibi - Seven last words (1998-2000), Mulier, ecce filius tuus - Seven last words (1998-2000), Eli, lama sabatani? - Seven last words (1998-2000), I thirst - Seven last words (1998-2000), Consummatum est - Seven last words (1998-2000), Father, into thy hands - Seven last words (1998-2000), Nox et tenebrae - Trois nocturnes (1990), Caligo terrae scinditur - Trois nocturnes (1990), Sunt multa fucis - Trois nocturnes (1990), Ad Martem - Precatio pro pace (1975), Ad Dominum - Precatio pro pace (1975), Libera plebem - Pro pace motets (1955-1959), O tristia secla priora - Pro pace motets (1955-1959), Solus ad vicitmam - Pro pace motets (1955-1959)

Esoterics : Ru'ia - Sacred visions inspired by Islam

Review: The Esoterics proudly presents RU'IA, its ninth CD recording. Titled with an Arabic word meaning "dreams" or "visions," this is the first American choral CD inspired entirely by Islamic scripture and poetry. The repertoire includes: Mombasa matatu meditation by Vancouver composer Hussein Janmohamed - a choral cityscape wherein Muslim chant emerges from the morning din of urban Kenya; Bern Herbolsheimer's Kader kic (The night of destiny) - a setting of verses by Tatar poet Gabdulla Tukai about the holiest night in Ramadan; and the Islamic-inspired Priere by Dutch composer Ton de Leeuw. The centerpiece of this recording is a 50-minute a cappella choral dreamscape by The Esoterics' founder Eric Banks entitled Twelve Qur'anic visions. In addition to studying the Qur'an, Banks researched this piece during his extensive travel to India and Indonesia over the course of two years. The resulting work unveils the essence of Muslim faith, including visions of the creation, the beauty of nature, the wisdom of the prophets, the afterlife in Hell and Paradise, the injustice of aggression, and the path to peace. Banks was strongly motivated to write and record this piece to initiate listeners in the West to one of the most prevalent yet misunderstood religions in the world.

Songlist: Priere (Prayer) (1954), Kader kic (The night of destiny) (2005), Mombasa matatu meditation (2005), I. The names of God - Twelve Qur'anic visions (2005-2007), II. Review: The first of two discs funded by a grant from the NEA, The Esoterics' sixth CD, SONETTARIA, presents fourteen settings of sonnets: a choral "sonnet of sonnets." Recorded after the SONETTO concert series in May 2006, this CD features six world premiere choral settings of Michelangelo, Rossetti, and Browning by Eric Banks, Lorri Kristin Frogget, and John Muehleisen. In addition, The Esoterics sings two sonnets of Petrarch by Lars John Werle, and five sonnets of Shakespeare by Paul Crabtree, Jaakko Mantyjarvi, and Dominick Argento. To complete this disc, the ensemble performs Three nocturnes by Carlos Chavez, and is joined by guest harpists Alexis Odell and Melissa Walsh to present Robert Moran's Notturno in Weiss.

Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians : 'Twas The Night Before Christmas

Review: For many years Waring and his Pennsylvanians entertained America with radio and tv broadcasts, as well as stage shows and a multitude of recordings. Culled from the Waring archives, the spontaneity and energy of these live recordings comes through from the first cut. Featured are famous Pennsylvanian soloists and the incomparable Waring Glee Club on these 21 wonderful (all big band accompanied) songs of Christmas. We can't really pick favorites here. The jazzy "Jingle Bells" perhaps, or the Teen Trio's solo on "Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer" that segues into manic sound-effect silliness." Certainly the "Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow Medley," Frank Davis' soulful solo on "One for the Little Bitty Baby," and Jack Best and Gordon Goodman on "Twas the Night Before Christmas." Oh, and we have to include Jane Wilson's solos on "Away In A Manger" and "Cantique De Noel" (Oh Holy Night). The bottom line is, this is great, classic entertainment by, in our opinion, the premier choral organization of all time. Christmas music just doesn't get any better than this!

Songlist: Opening: I Hear Music, Jingle Bells, Christmas Was Meant For Children, Santa Claus is Comin' To Town, Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, One For The Little Bitty Baby, Medley (Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow, The Sleigh, Winter Wonderland), White Christmas, The Christmas Song, 'Twas The Night Before Christmas, Medley (Adeste Fidelis, The First Noel, Carol Of The Bells), Beautiful Savior, God Rest Ye Merry, Gentleman, The Twelve Days Of Christmas, Rise Up Shepard And Foller, Oh Gathering Clouds, Behold That Star, Medley Of English Carols (Suzzani, Coventry Carol, Gloucestershire Wassail), Away In A Manger, Cantique De Noel (Oh Holy Night), Silent Night/Come Unto Him, Closing Sleep

Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians : I Hear Music

Review: This release is a "twofer" by having two classic Fred Waring stereo albums on one CD. "In Hi-Fi" (1957) and "All Through the Night" (1958) were both big sellers when there were first released and these recording clearly demonstrate why The Pennsylvanians were so popular. Lots of warm memories here!

Songlist: I Hear Music, Dry Bones, In the Still of the Night, Ol' Man River, Hit the Road to Dreamland, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor, Cigarette, Sweet Music and You, The Whiffenpoof Song, Hora Staccato, Lolly Too Dum Dey, Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child, You'll Never Walk Alone, Battle Hymn of the Republic, Sleep, Autumn Leaves, If I Had My Way, The Inch Worm, Dear Hearts and Gentle People, Anywhere I Wander, Tennessee Waltz, Greensleeves, Funiculi Funicula, Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyes, The Unconstant Lover, Comin' Thro' the Rye, All Through the Night

Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians : Nutcracker Suite

Review: Tchaikovsky's beloved Nutcracker Suite is given a twist as performed by Fred Waring and the Pennslyvanians. Conceived by arranger Harry Simeone he combines the charming lyrics written by Jay Johnson, Frank Cunkle, Daisy Bernier and Fred Waring. The arrangement was debuted on October 27, 1947 on Waring's radio program for General Electric and recorded for Decca Records later that year. It has been delighting audiences ever since. The performance heard here was originally broadcast August 19, 1948.

Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians : Sentimental Journey

Review: Called "the man who taught America how to sing" Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians were a fixture on radio in the '40's and '50's and these 23 songs were recorded in 1949 and 1950 when at the height of their popularity. The group, including the instrumentalists, was over 50 members strong and sing beautifully some of the classic songs from the era. The arrangements were from some of the top choral arrangers in the country such as Roy Ringwold and Harry Simeone. A great trip down memory lane.

Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians : The Broadway Years

Review: Volume 2 of the Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians legend compendium features cuts from early 1929, the last months of the Flapper Era, through 1932, the first years of the Depression, but the time of some of Waring's greatest fame and success. The very soul of optimism, fun and silliness, the group was a hit performing in movie theatres, on the radio, on records and ultimately in the movies themselves later in the 30s. "Broadway Years" features 24 (all accompanied) digitally restored and remastered songs from the Pennsylvanians in their prime: "Button Up Your Overcoat," "Alma Mammy," "I Want To Be Happy," "Tea For Two," "Let Me Sing And I'm Happy," "Elizabeth," "Sing A Little Jingle," "Dancing In The Dark," "Let's Have Another Cup of Coffee," "I Say It's Spinach (And To Hell With It!)" and "Well! Well! Well! Beautifully produced, funny, hip, smooth, always with a catchy "hook" to sing along with-this is top-40 pop before there was such a thing. This series is fascinating on many levels and a joy to listen to!

Songlist: Button Up Your Overcoat, Then You've Never Been Blue, Navy Blues, Alma Mammy, With You, Crying for the Carolines, We want to Be Happy, Tea for Two, Let Me Sing and I'm Happy, Thank Your Father, Love for Sale, Where Have You Been?, Elizabeth, Oh Donna Clara!, Sing A Little Jingle, Dancing in the Dark, Let's Have Another Cup O' Coffee, I Say It's Spinach, On A Room in Manhattan, How'm I Doin'?, Rhymes, Old Yazoo, The Old Man of the Mountain, Well! Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians : The Collegiate Years

Review: In the early 1920s Fred Waring was a student at Penn State, where he formed Waring's Pennsylvanians (which featured a trademark glee club) who entered radio on pioneer station WWJ in Detroit. This generous, fascinating compendium of 24 (all accompanied) songs is from 1925 to 1928, a boom time of heady first success for the Pennsylvanians. Fred's amazing career as a bandleader stretched from the 1920s to the 1970s, enjoying his greatest success in the 1930s, appearing in many movies. These songs have the "jazz age" manic optimism that fit so well in the backgrounds of early cartoons. This is feel-good, funny, tongue-in-cheek dance music with titles like "Keep Sweeping The Cobwebs Off The Moon," "Don't Sing Aloha When I Go," "Syncopation Sal," "How About Me?," "What Do You Say?" and "Any Ice Today, Lady?" (with a bit that sounds like Popeye singing to Olive). It's not possible to be in a bad mood while listening to a Fred do the vocals on a truly silly song like "Bolshevik." Great stuff, digitally restored and remastered!

Songlist: Collegiate, Syncopation Sal, Mighty Blue, Freshie, I Love My Baby, Collegiate Blues, Any Ice Today, Lady?, Bolshevik, Don't Sing Aloha When I Go, I Love the College Girls, My Regular Girl, Hello, Swannee, Helllo, Wob-A-Ly Walk, ICE CREAM, Keep Sweeping the Cobwebs Off the Moon, If I Can't Have You, The Yale Blues, Who's Blue Now?, What Do You Say?, Lila, Farewell Blues, Hello! Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians : To You Forever / In Concert

Review: From the cherished Christmas carol, the sincere warmth of the spiritual, the cheer of the drinking song, to the tenderness of the love song, Fred Waring was the delineator, the innovator, the voice and interpreter of the language of 1960s youth in song. This all-accompanied, 2 CD, 2-lp compilation, originally released on Reprise in 1964, tours the world's greatest popular love songs. Composers and authors of course include Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichael, the Gershwins, Hammerstein and Jerome Kern, and we have the contrast of the studio-recorded lp, "To You Forever," and the live "In Concert" lp. The 11 songs on "Forever," smooth and sweet as you please: "You Do Something to Me," "Embraceable You," "All of You" and "All the Things You Are"-are listed in the dictionary under "Romantic." "In Concert" features an intro to the audience by Fred, and is a lively collection, from folk tunes like "Mr. Frog A Courtin'" and "On Top Of Old Smokey," spirituals like "Joshua Fit de Battle of Jericho" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic," and show tunes like "Hello, Dolly" to movie tunes like "Chim Chim Cher-ee" and "Supercalifragilisticexpialadocious" from "Mary Poppins." This is entertainment!

Songlist: The Very Thought of You (Noble), (You'd Be So) Easy to Love, You Do Something To Me, The Nearness of You, You and the Night and the Music (Schwartz, Dietz), Embraceable You (G. Gershwin, I. Gershwin), You'd Be So Nice to Come Home to (Cole Porter), You're Driving Me Crazy (Donaldson), There Will Never Be Another You (Warren, Gordon), All Of You, All The Things You Are (Kern, Hammerstein II), I Hear Music and Sleep, Sleep, Sleep (Waring, Doph/Waring, Geibel), Mr. Frog A Courtin' He Did Ride (Traditional), Hello Mudduh, Hello Faddah (Bush, Sherman), The Swingin' Shepherd Blues (Koffman, Roberts, Jacobson), Joshua Fit De Battle of Jericho (Traditional), On Top of Old Smokey (Traditional), 12th Street Rag (Bauman), Sweet Sue - Just You (Harris, Young), Vilia (Lehor), Cecilia (Dreyer, Ruby), Nola (Amdt, Skylar), Hello, Dolly!, Dance of the Hours (Ponchielli), Nutcracker Suite Overture and Anitra's Dance and Fugue in C Minor and Our, Love (Tchaikovsky), Jada a la Dixieland (Carleton), Jada (Carleton), Ritual Fire Dance (Defalla), Chim Chim Cher-ee (Sherman, Sherman), Supercalifragilisticexpialadocious (Sherman, Sherman), Battle Hymn of the Republic (Howe, Steffe), Sleep, Sleep, Sleep (Waring, Geibel)

Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians : We All Scream For Ice Cream

Review: It's hard to imagine having a career in music more sheer fun than Fred Waring's. Starting a banjo orchestra with his brother and friends while a student at Penn State University, the band did so well he had to choose between that and architecture, and chose music. By 1922 the 9-member band toured locally, growing to 11 members on their tour through Canada, playing snappy, fast-paced numbers. Success in the Detroit-Chicago area led to a Victor recording contract and "Sleep," their first smash hit. Movies (Harold Lloyd's "The Freshman," RKO's "Syncopation," the Broadway musical "Hello, Yourself," and Fred and the Pennsylvanians were a top box office draw on a level with Paul Whiteman's orchestra. Fred's own 1930 musical comedy "Rah Rah Daze" became a smash on Broadway called "The New Yorkers." Millions tuned into his regular radio programs with the band and Waring's "Glee Club," from 1933 through the war years, finally ending in 1957. During this time he had a regular TV slot from 1947 to 1954 and a daytime show in 1957. Concert tours continued through the 1970s, finally playing at Reagan's inaugural in 1981. Finding time to invent the famous Waring blender, Waring died at Penn State, where it had all begun, in 1984. Included here are 24 upbeat, funny, fun tunes, all orchestrally accompanied, songs like "Collegiate," "Does My Sweetie Do-And How!," the title tune, "Let Me Sing and I'm Happy," H'lo Baby," "Red Hot Chicago," "Dancing in The Dark," Irving Berlin's "Let's Have Another Cup of Coffee" and "I Say It's Spinach," "Fit as a Fiddle" and ending with their first hit, "Sleep." This is great stuff from a more innocent time, and plenty of it. Highly recommended.

Songlist: Collegiate, Does My Sweetie Do - And How!, I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream, Who's Blue Now?, Collegiana, Navy Blues, Let Me Sing and I'm Happy, H'lo Baby, Good for You, Bad for Me, Red Hot Chicago, So Beats My Heart for You, Little White Lies, Love for Sale, Sing A Little Jingle, Dancing in the Dark, Let's Have Another Cup of Coffee, I Say It's Spinach, How'm I Doin'?, Rhymes, A Picnic for Two, You'll Get By, Fit As A Fiddle, Young and Healthy, Sleep

The realism and immediacy of the performance is documented in a way which truly brings these classic choral pieces to life.

Gloriae Dei Cantores : Chants of Christmas

Review: Depicting the sacred mystery of Christmas in the ancient melodies of Gregorian chant, this recording will enrich anyone's experience of this holy season. The first Mass, the quietly joyful "Ad Missam in Vigilia," builds on the anticipation of the coming event, proclaiming the Good News of the salvation prepared for us by a loving God through the birth of His Son. The second Mass, the tender "Ad Missam in Nocte," is sung at the hour traditionally oberved as the time of Christ's birth. With exquisite beauty and strength, the Mass celebrated at dawn on Christmas Day, "Ad Missam in Aurora," expresses the coming of the Light into the world. The fourth Mass, "Ad Missam in Die," is a jubilant expression of the salvation and righteousness of God. This recording also includes special antiphons honoring the Virgin Mary.

Gloriae Dei Cantores : Chants of Easter

Review: This recording of Gregorian Chant from the Glorae Dei Cantores Schola celebrates the Feast of the Resurrection, which is rooted in the earliest centuries of Christian worship. This "celebration of celebrations" is a time for rebirth, and this recording reflects that sense of personal renewal and joy. The Chants of Easter includes the Propers of Easter Day and chants for the octave of Easter---daily services that are part of the week-long celebration of the Easter miracle. These chants are conveyed with careful attention to subtleties in the ancient Gregorian notation, inviting listeners to share the experience of Christ's resurrection in all its richness.

Gloriae Dei Cantores : Masters of the Renaissance

Review: This release from Gloriae Dei Cantores features sacred music from one of the most inspired periods in the arts: the Renaissance. Each of the European schools of composition (Italian, Flemish, German, Spanish, and English) is represented by a total of twenty composers, offering a fascinating cross-section of styles and influences. Great masters such as Lassus, Byrd, and Victoria are featured, as well as lesser-known composers such as Hassler, de Wert, and Nanino. The central work of this recording is the Missa super Bella Amfitrit' altera by Lassus, generally considered one of his finest works. Other selections include Anerio's tender and stirring Requiem aeternum and William Byrd's Terra tremuit, which has been described as "one of the most dramatic texts in the whole of music."

Gloriae Dei Cantores : Mozart - Rare Choral Works

Review: The year 2006 marked a major musical anniversary with the 250th birthday of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The world has enjoyed the genius of Mozart through his symphonies, operas, chamber and piano music. In addition, his Requiem, left incomplete at his death, remains one of the most beloved of sacred choral works. Gloriae Dei Cantores presents a rare look at a side of Mozart that is not so well known: his contribution to music for the Church. Included in this recording are two rarely heard major works of great beauty and invention: Davide Penitente K. 469 and the Litaniae de venerabili altaris Sacramento K. 243. Also included are a further litany, several motets, and two of the famous church sonatas for small orchestra and organ, giving a rounded picture of Mozart, the sacred musician. Gloriae Dei Cantores : Paths of Grace

Review: Seventeen of Gloriae Dei Cantores' finest recordings make their way onto Paths of Grace, the final companion volume to earlier anthologies Eternal Light and Joy and Gladness. Gloriae Dei Cantores : Sacred Songs of Russia

Review: Over the past thousand years, Russian composers have created an immensely rich and varied body of choral music and chant to express the sacred texts of the liturgy. Sacred Songs of Russia portrays the musical legacy of the Russian people, which comes as a response to the depth of their faith. Among the noteworthy works on this recording, which contains previously released material, are two stirring works by Rachmaninoff including Bogoroditse Devo (Rejoice, O Virgin) from his All Night Vigil, opus 37, and V molitvah (The Mother of God, ever-vigilant in prayer). Perhaps most significant are the Three Choruses of Georgy Sviridov (1915-1998), composed during a time when sacred music was still actively suppressed by the Soviet regime. The three works by Peter Tchaikovsky, Milost' mira (A Mercy of Peace), Angel Vopiyashe (The Angel cried), and Hymn in Honor of SS. Cyril and Methodius, are also strong statements of the Russian faith and expression through music.

Songlist: Hristos Voskrese, Blagoslovi, Dushe, Bogoroditse Devo, Three Choruses: Bogoroditse Devo, Three Choruses: Liubov' Sviataya, Three Choruses: Pkayanniy Stih, Ghospodi Vozzvah/Tsar' Nebesniy, Beznevestanya Devo, Slava Vo Vishnih Bogu, Chrubic Hymn, Milost' Mira, Angel Vopiyashe, Hymn in Honor of SS. Cyril and Methodius, O Tebe Raduyetsia, Svete Tihiy, Hvalite Imia Ghospodne, V Molitvah Neusipayushchuyu Bogoroditsu, Litany of Supplication, Otche Nash

Gloriae Dei Cantores : The Coming of Christ

Review: The Coming of Christ is the first of a series of three CDs using the exquisite music of Gregorian chant to describe and illuminate the life of Christ. Sung by the Gloriae Dei Cantores Schola and conducted by Dr. Mary Berry, CBE, these reknowned experts bring a wealth of experience to the interpretation of the chant. Well-known pieces alternate with numerous antiphons to bring us closer to the time of Christ's birth and early childhood. The prophetic announcements, the longing and anticipation of Christ's birth as well as the joy of the angels' message are all vividly portrayed in the chant. Chant-based organ works by French composers Alexandre Guilmant and Charles-Marie Widor frame this program celebrating the life of Christ. These are the first recordings to be made in the superb acoustics of the Church of the Transfiguration, a basilican church made of limestone, in a modern-day abbey.

Songlist: Offertoire Sur l'hymne, Responsory: Aspicens a longe, Rorate Caeli desuper, Antiphon: O Emmanuel, Communion: Ecce Virgo, Antiphon: Missus est Gabriel, Offertory: Ave Maria, Antiphon and Solemn Benedictus: Puer qui natus est, Invitatory: Christus natus est, Intoroit: Puer Natus est nobis, Alleluia: Dies sanctificatus, Antiphon: Quem vidistis, Antiphon: Genuit puerpera, Antiphon:Angelus ad pastores, Antiphon:Parvulus Filius, Hymn: Christe Redemptor, Verbum caro factum est, Hodie Christus natus est, Mirabile Mysterium, Responsum, Lumen ad revelationem gentium, Omnes de saba venient, Vidimus stellam, Admoniti Magi, Herodes iratus, Tolle Puerum, Ex AEgypto, Ibant parentes jesu, Non invenientes, Symphonie Gothique IV: Final

Gloriae Dei Cantores : The Lord Is My Shepherd

Review: The Lord is My Shepherd is the third volume in the American Psalmody series, a distinguished series devoted to musical interpretations of the psalms by American composers. Of a previous recording in this series, Fanfare magazine raved, "This interesting collection of sacred music, American style, can hardly miss: God Himself seems to have placed His seal of approval on it." "The choir has a full, vibrant sound and sings with great fervor. . . Ned Rorem's Two Psalms and a Proverb is absolutely gorgeous. . . Bruce Neswick's stirring anthem I Will Set His Dominion in the Sea is also first-rate." Gramophone Magazine

Songlist: The God of Love My Shepherd Is, Psalm 100, Behold, how good and how pleasant it is, Wounds without Cause, How long wilt Thou forget me, O Lord?, Make Haste, The House of the Lord, Proverbs for a Son, The Twenty-Third Psalm, Who crieth: "Woe"?, The Women of Valour, By the Waters of Babylon, I Will Set His Dominion in the Sea

Gloriae Dei Cantores : Unto Ages of Ages

Review: Gloriae Dei Cantores releases a new Russian CD featuring the recorded premiere of Georgy Sviridov's Ineffable Mystery, a gorgeous sacred choral suite. In his memory, the choir sang this set of pieces in Moscow and the Golden Ring on their third tour of Russia in 1998. Georgy Sviridov was one of Shostakovich's favorite students, wrote the music for Moscow's leading television news program and became one of the leading composers during the Soviet regime. His vocal music has been championed by Dmitri Hvorostovsky, the great Russian baritone. Gloriae Dei Cantores, having already recorded "the best anthology of Russian music" (American Record Guide for Sacred Songs of Russia), now adds this rich collection of Russian sacred music to their discography. Also included are excerpts from the Tchaikovsky's Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom and the Rachmaninoff All-Night Vigil.

Songlist: Posle pervovo antifona, Heruvimskaya pesn, Molitva Ghospodnia, Prichastniy Stih, Priidite, poklonismsia, Blagoslovi, dushe moya, Nine otpushchayeshi, Blagosloven yesi, Slava v vishnih Bogu, i na zemli mir, Ghospodi spasi Blagochestiviye, Svyati Bozhe, Dostoyno yest, Rodestvenskaya pesn, Slava i Alliluya, Niezrechennoe Chudo

Grand Rapids Women's Chorus : Celebrating Time Together

Review: The 37-strong, a cappella Grand Rapids (MI) Women's Chorus is led by Artistic Director Lori Tennenhouse and Small Ensemble Director Martha VanderEyk, and "Celebrating Time Together" is a "best of" 15-song collection from the founding of the group in 1996 to 2006. Some favorites are four songs commissioned by the GRWC: Diane Benjamin's lightly accompanied "Miracle," Libby Larsen & Mary Oliver's string quartet accompanied "The Summer Day," Ysaye M. Barnwell & Audrey Lorde's "Memorial 1," and Marjan Helms' piano and percussion-accompanied "Rainsong;" and a pair performed by the 8-voice Small Ensemble, "My Love Walks in Velvet" and "A Red, Red Rose. Other favorites are Antonin Dvorak's lovely "Largo" (from Song of Survival, Vol.1), the powerful, drum-accompanied Akan Playground Song "Sansa Kroma," Alan E. Naplan's "Al Shlosha D'Varim," Zap Mama's rhythmic gem "Guzophela" and Eric Whitacre's "Sleep." The GRWC has a beautiful, sweet sound, strong covers and excellent new material. There's a lot to like on "Celebrating Time Together!"

Songlist: Set Me As A Seal, Sisters, Sansa Kroma, Tres Cantos Nativos, Largo, Guzophela, Miracle, The Summer Day, My Love Walks In Velvet, A Red, Red Rose, Al Shlosha D'Varim, Will The Circle Be Unbroken, Memorial 1, Rainsong, Sleep

Grand Rapids Women's Chorus : Where I Live

Review: The pride of Grand Rapids (MI), the 42-strong Grand Rapids Women's Chorus, is directed by Lori Tennenhouse. Since its inception in 1996 the chorus has been dedicated to singing culturally diverse music that promotes appreciation of women composers and arrangements. "Where I Live," is a powerful piece by Diane Benjamin which tells the story of a woman with breast cancer through narrative and song. The CRWC performs the piece with a pianist, two violinists, viola and cello players and percussion. The material is stark, heartrending and enlightening, and includes "Somebody," "That Was the Fruit of My Orchard," "In The Hospital," "Help Me," "Peace," "My Body" and "Teach Me How." "Where I Live" is an important, unforgettable experience that shines a necessary light on a horrendous disease and the feelings and experiences of real women who must courageously stand and fight against it.

Songlist: Somebody, Narration, That Was The Fruit Of My Orchard, Narration , In The Hospital, Narration , Help Me, Narration , Peace, Narration , My Body, Narration , Teach Me How

Gregg Smith Singers : Jove's Nectar - Music of Edwin London

Review: Founded in 1955 by Gregg Smith, The Gregg Smith Singers have made over 35 US and a dozen European tours, and their recordings have won 3 Grammys and two Montreux Awards. Here the Singers perform the eclectic work of American composer Edwin London. Belonging to no particular school, Edwin's music is alternatively experimental and traditional, it is invariably deeply musical and beautiful. Often theatrical, sometimes literary, occasionally humorous (for instance the composed-out hiccups in the second movement of Jove's Nectar), London's music follows his own path. The surrealistic song titles give us a taste of the composer's unconventional mindset: "Celia's Hiccups," "Canon for Dizzy," "Dr. Lassus," "Fanfaronnada" and "Bach (Again)." There is some orchestra accompaniment on "Dirge with Bells," strings on "Moon Sound Zone," and kazoo and strings on "Psalm of These Days I." All in all, "Jove's Nectar" is some of the most out-there, and interesting, choral music we've heard!

Songlist: Estampie, Celia's Hiccups, Canon for Dizzy, Dr. Lassus, Strangers from the East, Fanfaronnada, Dirge with Bells, Moon Sound Zone, Psalm of these Days I, Psalm of these Days V, Bach (again)

Gregg Smith Singers : William Duckworth - Southern Harmony

Review: The 17 men and women of the Gregg Smith Singers, directed by Gregg, perform a piece written by New York City composer Wm. Duckworth, who was affected by "shaped note" (helping the congregation learn the tune by making the notes square, round, triangular and diamond-shaped) singing in rural churches. "Southern" is based on an 1854 hymn collection of the same name, and it is a parody in the ancient sense, not humorous, but a rewriting, paraphrase and commentary on the material. There are 20 songs here, divided into four books: "Consolation," "Wondrous Love," "Hebrew Children," "Solemn Thought," "Rock of Ages," "Cheerful," "War Department," Condescension," "Holy Manna," "Bozrah," "The Mouldering Vine," "Mear," "Leander," "Sardina," "Windham," "Distress," "Nashville, "Turtle Dove," "Primrose" and "Social Band." An intriguing choral piece, with orchestral use of voices, that goes off into surprising, theatrical melodic directions.

Songlist: Consolation, Wondrous Love, Hebrew Children, Solemn Thought, Rock of Ages, Cheerful, War Department, Condescension, Holy Manna, Bozrah, The Mouldering Vine, Mear, Leander, Sardina, Windham, Distress, Nashville, Turtle Dove, Primrose, Social Band
