Choir of All Saints Church, Beverly Hills : Be Still, My Soul

Review: A stunning program of contemplative sacred texts set to some of the most beautiful singing we've heard. Slow, focussed intensity creates a strong emotional response from many listeners. The Martin piece alone is worth the price of admission. With premiere recordings of new anthems by Craig Phillips and Roland Martin, this CD is also the first recording of the widely admired Choir of All Saints, Beverly Hills, under its new director, Dale Adelmann. The Choir specializes in music of the Anglican cathedral and American Episcopal choral traditions and is equally at home singing the great masters of the European Continent.

Choir of King's College, Cambridge : Great Choral Classics

Review: Directed by Sir David Willcocks, The Choir of King's College, Cambridge was founded in 1441 by Henry VI, who wanted the daily services in his chapel to be provided with music, and stipulated that the college should be responsible for the education of the choristers. This is a 2-CD set featuring a selection of the Choir's most renowned recordings. CD 1 includes Gregorio Allegri's "Miserere," Palestrina's "Stabet Mater," Tallis' "Spem in allium," Wm. Byrd's "Ave Verum Corpus" and the 12 movements of Vivaldi's "Gloria in D Major, RV 589." Choir of Ormond College : Barber: Choral Music

Review: Setting texts for chorus or solo songs occupied Samuel Barber throughout his creative life. In particular he sought out English and Irish writers, many of whose melancholic and nostalgic texts aptly matched his own musically romantic persuasion. A Stopwatch and an Ordnance Map is a disturbing setting of a poem by Stephen Spender describing the death of a soldier in the Spanish Civil War, during which the poet had spent time in Spain. The elegiac and now extraordinarily popular Adagio for Strings is heard in the composer's own choral version, Agnus Dei, to words from the Latin Mass. God's Grandeur is one of Barber's most ambitious and advanced unaccompanied settings

Songlist: A Stopwatch and an Ordnance Map, Op. 15, Under The Willow Tree (from Vanessa), Twelfth Night, Op. 42, No. 2, To be Sung on the Water, Op. 42, No. 2, The Monk and His Cat, Agnus Dei, Reincarnations, Op. 16, The Virgin Martyrs, Op. 8, No. 1, Let Down the Bars, O Death, Op. 8, No. 2, Heaven-haven, Op. 13, No. 1, Sure on This Shining Night, Op. 13, No. 3, Chorale for Ascension day (Easter Chorale), Two Choruses from Antony and Cleopatra, Op. 40, God's Grandeur

Choral Arts Northwest : Cathedral Anthems

Review: This recording represents forty years of Peter Hallock's work. While organist and choirmaster of St. Mark's Cathedral in Seattle, he composed an impressive array of original choral works in the Anglican tradition, including both large and small-scale works for choir, with and without instruments. Often dissonant and difficult, many of these works are recorded here for the first time. The CD opens with the triumphant anthem "Ye Choirs of New Jerusalem" for choir, organ, brass and percussion. Led by Richard Sparks, Choral Arts Northwest gives glorious performances of Hallock's stunning music.

Songlist: Ye Choirs of New Jerusalem, Show Us Your Mercy, O Lord, Dominus Regnavit, There Is a Stream, The Song of Moses, Exsultate Deo, Phoenix, Gloria in Excelsis Deo, Qui Tollis, Quoniam, Commit Your Way to the Lord, Behold, the Eye of the Lord, Whom Should We Love Like Thee

Choral Arts Northwest : Mornings Like This

Review: The "Pure Sound" of Choral Arts under their new director, Robert Bode presents several world premiere recordings, including The Dream Keeper, a piece in four movements, each featuring a different text from Langston Hughes. Other pieces feature the poetry of Dylan Thomas, Walt Whitman and the conductor. In the recording they explore "Mornings," not just the actual beginning of the day, but also more metaphorical associations, such as renewal, childhood, and beginnngs. There are some very familiar things on this CD, including the spiritual "My Lord, What a Mornin'" and the American hymn "Shall We Gather at the River?" The CD also features 5 previously unrecorded pieces, including "The Dream Keeper" by William Averitt and the first recording of the version for chorus and piano of John Corigliano's "Fern Hill."

Songlist: My Lord, What a Mornin', Sunrise, The Waking, Fern Hill, Dawn, A Child's Prayer, In Dreams, The Dream Keeper, Dream Variations, As I Grew Older, Song, Will there really be a morning, Beautiful River

Choral Arts Northwest : The Light Of Stars - Randall Thompson

Review: 30-strong, mixed-voice, Seattle-based Choral Arts (formerly Choral Arts Northwest), founded by artistic director Richard Sparks, is one of the outstanding chamber choirs in the United States. Choral Cross-Ties : Lauridsen - The Complete Choral Cycles

Reading the beautiful poetry which inspired Lauridsen in the extensive liner notes, the Graves in English, the Madrigali in Italian and the Chansons in French (all with translations), adds to our appreciation and feeling for the music. Lightly accompanied on piano, "The Complete Choral Cycles" is an extensive, demanding work made to look easy by a wonderfully versatile chorus.

Chorus Angelicus : Christmas Angelicus

Review: This CD is a lovely assortment of familiar Christmas carols. The opening carol, "Once in Royal David's City" with soloist Maribeth Diggle is especially nice as voices are gradually added until the full choir is singing. The combination of the children's and adult choirs creates a beautiful sound. This is a delightful treat for Christmas.

Chorus Angelicus : Untraveled Worlds

Review: The well-known children's choir Chorus Angelicus (the Angelic Choir), founded in 1991 by three-time Grammy Award-winning composer, Paul Halley, is administered by the unique and inspiring choral organization, Torrington, CT's Joyful Noise. They transform the lives of 90 children from more than 15 towns in Northwest Connecticut and the Berkshires. The 45 mixed-voice Chorus members, ages 8-15, travel twice weekly to receive training in the art of singing, reading and understanding music and music theory, and adhere to a rigorous schedule of rehearsals and concerts. "Untraveled Worlds" is a musical world tour, beginning with the US and a Halley original, the title tune, and later we hear another Halley original, "God Be Merciful Unto Us." England's "Drop, Drop Slow Tears," Finland's "Who Can Sail," Russia's "Gladsome Light," South Africa's "Mbiri Kuna Mwari" and Scotland's "The Grey Selchie" are particularly nice, as is Serbia's lilting "Niska Banja." Ireland's "The Song of Wandering Aengus," Lithuania's "Nepusk, vejeli" and Canada's heart-tugging folk tune "Away From the Roll of the Sea" round out the collection of 20 songs. Through hard work and dedication these young singers learn to blend their voices to create the unique sound that is Chorus Angelicus, one of the best children's choruses in the world! Chorus Angelicus : What Child Is This?

Review: Paul Halley's renowned choirs Chorus Angelicus and Gaudeamus pair up for another spectacular offering. The choirs sing with precision and clarity while incorporating a warmth and immediacy to the performance of each song. What Child Is This? comprises a selection of the new, adventurous, and less familiar sacred Christmas repertoire, much of it performed in recent years in the choirs' annual Christmas Angelicus concert series (now in its sixteenth season and broadcast annually by National Public Radio.) More than half the arrangements on the CD are Halley's work, which adds a refreshing, new sound to this mix of Christmas music. Halley's arrangements and compositions, written for these choirs and previously unrecorded, deliver the adventurous harmonies and captivating lyricism for which he is celebrated.

Songlist: What Child is This?, Angelus ad Virginem, Angelus ad Virginem, Jesus, Jesus, Rest Your Head, O Leave Your Sheep, The Blessed Son of God, I Saw Three Ships, O Magnum Mysterium, Agnus Dei, The First Nowell, Bogoroditse Devo, Tis Winter Now, Good King Wenceslas, A Nativity, The Holy Boy, O Little Town of Bethlehem, Lullaby My Jesus, Beannact Leat, Infinite Light, Go, Tell it on the Mountain, Watts' Cradle Hymn

"America Sings" features 18 songs, some accompanied by piano, flute and organ. Our favorites are the spirituals "Great Day!," "Run to Jesus," "Deep River" and "I Hear a Voice Callin' for Me," "Variations on America" and "I Hear America Singing." Colorado Children's Chorale : Tellin' it on the Mountain

Review: An exceptional collection of Appalachia folk music, Tellin' it on the Mountain takes listeners on an inspiring musical journey back to a simpler time in our nation's history. The music is arranged by local composer Samuel Lancaster, who has composed dozens of works for the Colorado Children's Chorale through the years. Lancaster describes the music as "a collection of valuable antiques." At times beautifully simple, the music moves the listener through sweet, whimsical grooves to powerfully complex harmonies and pure excitement. Inspired by Appalachia's traditional Christmas "all-night watch" services where people gathered to sing until the Morning Star appeared, Lancaster calls Tellin' it on the Mountain a "remembrance of people gathering to look for new life and new hope." This CD also features two Chorale favorites never before available on one recording: "Christmas in Colorado" and "This Christmastide."

Songlist: Wonder, Wonder, Go Tell It, Bye And Bye, Cradle Song, Angel Band, Wondrous Love, I Wonder As I Wander, Children Go, This Christmastide, Christmas In Colorado

Concordia Choir : Come To The Living Water

Review: The Concordia Christmas Concert has always sought to illuminate through music, art and the spoken word the rich tapestry of parable, theology, and the story that is the interaction of God and humankind that is found in the Holy Bible. Throughout Biblical history, Christ is referred to as the living water. "Come to the Living Water" is about the image of Christ and the coming of Christ into this barren and thirsty world. Concordia's world-renowned musical groups and ensembles, The Concordia Choir, The Concordia College Orchestra, The Concordia Chapel Choir, Mannerchor and Cantabile, and Bel Canto, bring us this magnificent annual live narrated Christmas event in 26 parts. The title cut, "Come to the Living Water," is a dramatic, powerful depiction of the creation of earth, followed by "The Heavens Are Telling of the Glory of God" and the hymn "All Creatures of our God and King." The story of Christ's birth is told with traditional carols like "Ave Maria," "O Little Town of Bethlehem," "Silent Night," "What Child," "Infant Holy, Infant Lowly," and "I Saw Three Ships," but also included are less familiar pieces like Philipp Nicolai's lovely a cappella piece, "Wake, Awake," Rene Clausen's "Calm On The Listening Ear of Night," Eleanor Daly's "Sunny Bank," the Swedish carol "When Christmas Morn is Dawning," and Knut Nystedt's "Cry Out and Shout." Mostly orchestrally accompanied, the joyous "Come to the Living Water" is the next best thing to being at this wonderful event!

Songlist: Fantasia on "Une Jeune Pucelle", Come to the Living Water, The Heavens Are Telling the Glory of God, All Creatures of Our God and King, This is my Father's World, Wake, Awake, O Little Town of Bethlehem, Calm, on the Listening Ear of Night, Lirum Lirum, Sunny Bank, Silent Nigt, What Child, As Lately We Watched, Infant Holy, Infant Lowly, Sing We Now, When Christmas Morn is Dawning, Still, Still, Still, I saw Three Ships, Gaudete, Go, Tell it on the Mountain, Hodie Christus Natus Est, Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing, Cry Out and Shout, When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, Compline

Concordia Choir : F. Melius Christiansen 135th Anniversary Concert

Review: Four cameras were used capture this concert of five Minnesota choirs celebrating the legacy of F. Melius Christiansen. Stunning audio and video make this concert DVD a must-have item for your library. One camera was mounted in the shell allowing you to view the conductors from the singer's point of view. Norway-born Frederick Melius Christiansen arrived in the Midwest in 1888 and immediately began establishing his career as a master musician. Accepting an appointment as music director of the fledgling music program at St. Olaf College in Minneapolis, as founder and leader of the St. Olaf Choir from 1911-41, he established a legacy of excellence, which still influences a cappella performances of choirs throughout the country. The Augsburg Choir, Concordia Choir, Concordia U. Christus Chorus, Gustavus Choir, St. Olaf Choir and The Anniversary Festival Choir celebrate the anniversary of F. Melius' birth in 1871 on two beautifully-recorded, powerful choral CDs, 16 pieces on the first and 10 on the second. Our favorites, of course, are "Lost in the Night," "In Dulci Jubilo," "Wake, Awake" and "Praise to the Lord," all arranged by the "Music Master of the Midwest," in addition to "Psalm 50" and "Beautiful Savior," composed by F. Melius. Wonderful!

Concordia Choir : Faire is the Heaven

Review: F. Melius Christiansen founded the 65-strong mixed voice Concordia Choir at Moorhead, MN's Concordia College in 1911, then led the choir until handing it over to his son Paul in 1937. Rene Clausen has been conductor of the Choir for more than 20 years, and is also a well-known composer and arranger, having written over 100 commissioned compositions. This veteran, prolific choir boasts over 22 finely-crafted CDs and DVDs in the catalog and has long been one of our favorites and best-sellers. The rich, angelic, soaring sound of the Concordia choir is beautifully evident on each of these 10 cuts. Some of our favorites are the title tune, by William H. Harris, Frank Martin's lovely "Agnus Dei," four songs by Eric Whitacre, "When David Heard," "Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine," "I Thank You God for most this amazing day," "This Marriage" and "With a Lilly in Your Hand;"and two versions of "Lo How A Rose E'er Blooming," Hugo Distler's soaring take on it and Jan Sanderson's haunting, surprising carol. Several of these (all a cappella) pieces are difficult and eclectic, but the Choir handles them all easily. Enjoy this remarkable collection by one of America's greatest choirs!

Concordia Choir : Memorial

Review: Memorial is a composition for mixed chorus, orchestra and baritone solo, based on subject material which reflets the horrific events of September 11th, 2001, in New York City. Though presented as one continuous movement, the composition follows a program that comprises of four sub-sections - Semptember Morning, The Attack, Prayers and Petitions. Conducted by its composer and director of the Concordia Choir, Rene Clausen, this beautiful piece of music will touch your heart in a way that only music can. The musical texture presents a poignant cascade of emotion that is amplified by the awesome peformance by the Concordia Choir and their Baritone soloist, Peter Halverson (A Concordia College Music Faculty member). On this CD, there is also an exceptional performance of Samuel Barber's instrumental piece, "Adagio for Strings," performed by the Concordia College Orchestra.

Concordia Choir : My Soul's Delight

Review: Spanning a diverse range of choral literature, this acclaimed Minnesota choir has once again produced a pristine recording. Directed by Rene Clausen, the mixed group performs spirituals ("Ain't Got Time To Die"), and folk songs ("Little Potato"), in addition to the expected arrangements of composers such as F. Melius Christiansen ("Praise To The Lord"), whose Scandinavian heritage is part of an acknowledged hegemony in the choral world. Other highlights include the "Noel Ayisyen (A Haitian Noel)" with it's perfect fifth harmonic background, and the droning "Past Life Melodies," which uses a judicious dissonance to craft an otherworldly deja vu. Blissful.

Songlist: my song in the night, create in me a clean heart, oh, yes!, Joshua Fit De Battle Of Jericho, ain't got time to die, little potato, two american folk songs, sourwood mountain, black sheep, the best of rooms, past life melodies, noel avisyen, Witness, pilgrim's chorus, praise to the lord, softly and tenderly

Concordia Choir : On Our Way Rejoicing

Review: Director Rene Clausen continues to raise the bar of excellence of this world-class choir and the 2006 Christmas Concert was a special series of concerts indeed. This year's honored concert honored longtime mural designer and liturgical artist David Hetland '69 who designed the hand-painted Christmas Concert murals for the past 28 years. David passed away April 16, 2006. Morten Lauridsen's "O Magnum Mysterium" has become a standard for many choirs and the choir here gives this magnificent piece true justice. A true delight this recording will brighten everyone's holiday spirits.

Concordia Choir : Prince of Peace, Hope To The World

Review: Since 1920 The Concordia Choir of Moorhead, Minnesota, has continued to affirm its reputation as one of the nation's finest a cappella choirs. Touring nationally and internationally the choir has performed in nearly every major hall in the United States including Carnegie Hall and Kennedy Center. "Prince of Peace" is their seventh CD release, and it features the 2002 Concordia College Christmas Concert, conducted by the renowned Rene Clausen. Begun on a small scale in 1927, the event as we know it today began in 1937 under Paul Christiansen, son of St. Olaf College choir director F. Melius Christiansen, when the first giant Christmas mural was added. The recording has 25 parts, some simply orchestra, some a cappella singing, some singing with orchestra, some narrative. For a hint of how wonderful this concert is, listen to "For Unto Us A Child Is Born," from Handel's "Messiah," featuring the orchestra and Choir-outstanding. John Gardner's "Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day," Stroope's "There Is No Rose of Such Virtue," Pierce's "How Still He Rests," or sinple carols like "Silent Night," a lilting "Pat-A-Pan," "O Hearken Ye," "Jesus, Jesus Rest Your Head," or the powerful Haitian carol "Noel Ayisen"-it's all amazing.

Songlist: Church Windows , Domine Deus from "Gloria", He, Watching Over Israel , O Lovely Christmas Rose, O Magnum Mysterium, There Is No Rose , Silent Night, How Still He Rests , O Chritmas Babe, the Best of All I Know (Leland B.
