Bella Voce Women's Chorus : Now Let Us Sing

Review: Founded in 2004 by Dr. Dawn Willis, Bella Voce consists of 40 to 45 auditioned singers, performing existing and newly-commissioned sacred and secular works for women's voices. The ensemble is drawn from four counties throughout Vermont, many of whom also sing in a variety of school, church and community choruses across the region. One of the highlights of the last few years for Bella Voce has included several collaborations with Gwyneth Walker. The members have enjoyed working closely with this gifted composer, whose catalog includes over 170 commissioned works, reflecting both serious and light-hearted musical styles. These 17 works are surprising, refreshing, witty, innovative and inspiring. Some favorites are "Women Should be Pedestals," the dramatic "How Can I Keep From Singing," "Gifts From The Sea," the delicate "Mornings Innocent," the a cappella tune "The Name is Changeless," the joyous "Love Is A Rain of Diamonds," the love song "I Will Be Earth," the lovely a cappella song "So Many Angels," "Walk That Valley," "Never Sit Down," the traditional songs "Crossing the Bar," "Peace I Ask of Thee, O River" and the title tune. There is some light accompaniment on most songs. The beautiful liner notes contain all the lyrics. An uplifting treat from Bella Voce and the wonderful composer Gwyneth Walker, that will touch and move you from beginning to end!

Belmont Chorale : Choral Music of Robert Ward

Review: Robert Ward's widely performed orchestral works and opers have tended to overshadow his many choruses and cantatas. This relearse of representative religious and patriotic works is therefore especially timely. The album begins with 'Earth Shall be Fair,' which was commissioned by the Des moines Council of Churches and was first performed by massed choirs from that city's churches. The version recorded here is for choirs and organ. The second group centers on the Palm Sunday/Easter theme. 'When Christ Rode Into Jerusalem' is a musico-dramatic telling of the Palm Sunday story. The third group begins with Concord Hymn, written in 1949 for the 25th Anniversaary of the Julliard School of Music. Three choruses from 'Sweet Freedom's Song,' which was commissioned and first performed by the Lexington Choral Society, complete that patriotic set.

Songlist: I Andante, II Allego , III Adagio, IV Larghetto, V Maestoso, Allegro, When Christ Rode Into Jerusalem, In His Last Days Jesus Came to Jerusalem, Let Us Heed The Voice Within, Concord Hymn, Ballad of Boston Bay, Epitaphs, Sweet Freedom's Song

Boys Choir Of Harlem : Precious Lord....Take My Hand

Some light piano accompaniment, like on the lovely Don Sebesky-arranged "Amazing Grace," but mostly sweet, spirited a cappella. Brazeal Dennard Chorale : Remembering, Discovering, Preserving

Review: The story of the Fisk Jubilee Singers is one of the most inspiring in all of American Music. In 1872 a history of their struggle, triumph, and music finally saw print. They sang the songs which were handed down to them by their slave ancestors. The songs expressed profound religious beliefs, an unshakable faith, relief from the suffering of slavery, and the optimism for a better world to come. In truth they were a major contributing tributary to the musical stream which diverged into gospel and blues. This beautiful recording recreates and shares with us some of that body of work which is so important to American music. It is meant to document and present to posterity some of the most powerful music ever sung.

Songlist: Oh, That Bleeding Lamb, I'll Never Turn Back, Listen to the Lambs, In Bright Mansions Above, Is a Light Shining, Heavenly Union, An' I Cry, O Holy Lord, Ain'A That Good News, Lily of the Valley, Gonna Journey Away, Any How, There's a Lit'l Wheel, O the Rocks and the Mountains, I'm Gonna Sing the Spirit, Elijah Rock

BYU Concert Choir : All Creatures Of Our God & King

Review: Organized in 1984 under the direction of Mack Wilberg, the 90-voice BYUCC is one of two highly select mixed choral ensembles that continue a long choral singing tradition at the University. The group has appeared in concert at national ACDA and MTNA conventions and with the Utah Symphony. On "All Creatures" the group's full, rich, flawless sound is featured on a collection of 12 symphonically accompanied, mostly traditional Christian hymns and songs of praise. The title tune, "The Lord Is My Shepherd," John Gardner's "Brightest and Best of the Sons of the Morning," "Be Still My Soul" and "Jesus, Once of Humble Birth" are particularly fine. Mack Wilberg's skills as an arranger are evident on four songs, and his own compositions, "Jesu, the Very Thought Is Sweet," and "Fantasia on Early Latter-day Saint Hymns," are wonderful. Extensive liner notes with all lyrics. An impressive, inspirational CD!

BYU Men's Chorus : Praise Him

Review: The BYU Men's Chorus' first two excellent releases, "Awake My Soul" and "Shout with Glory" whetted our appetite, and that of many fans, for their 3rd. For the long-awaited "Praise Him," conductor Rosalind Hall has assembled an exciting, heartfelt mix of religious texts with a nice set of folk and traditional songs to finish the program. 19 songs with some organ, horns, strings and percussion accompaniment. Review: Tantara Records is pleased to reintroduce the best seller that marked the emergence of the BYU Men's Chorus as a recording ensemble under the baton of then conductor Mack Wilberg (now director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir). BYU Singers : Eric Whitacre - Complete A Cappella Works

Review: A big seller at the recent ACDA Convention, "Eric Whitacre" is a stunning collection of songs composed in the classical style of Monteverdi, Debussy and Prokofiev, but with inspiration from such groups as the Beatles, Sting, Queen, Madonna and Peter Gabriel. His choice of texts also reflects a broad range of poets - Octavio Paz, Ogden Nash, James Joyce, e.e. cummings and Emily Dickenson, religious poets being conspicuous in their absence, although "three songs of faith" are included here. The mixed-voice Brigham Young U. Singers do justice to Whitacre's difficult, eclectic, wonderful, soaring compositions. 12 songs, "Water Night," the three songs of faith: "I Will Wade Out," "Hope, Faith, Life, Love," "I Thank You God for most this Amazing Day," "Cloudburst", "Sleep," "I Hide Myself," "With a Lily in Your Hand," "Go Lovely Rose," "When David Heard," "Lux aurumque" and "Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine." "Beautiful" is an inadequate word to describe Whitacre's work and the BYU Singers' interpretation of it. "Amazing" works much better! Recommended.

Songlist: Water Night, Three Songs of Faith:, I Will Wade Out, Hope, Faith, Life, Love, I Thank You God For Most This Amazing Day, Cloudburst, Sleep, Three Flower Songs:, I Hide Myself, With A Lily In Your Hand, Go, Lovely Rose, When David Heard, Lux Aurumque, Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machines

BYU Singers : Eric Whitacre 2

Review: In 1999 the BYU Singers, conducted by Ronald Staheli, performed two Whitacre pieces - "When David Heard" and "Water Night" - as part of their solo premier at New York's Carnegie Hall. The success of the BYU Singers: Live at Carnegie Hall recording, demand for more Whitacre music, and the fruitful partnership between the composer and BYU Singers led to Whitacre's request for the group to record his complete a cappella works in 2001. As a result of the enormous response to that album, the Singers are pleased to release a companion volume, Eric Whitacre 2. This CD was recorded in the spring of 2008, is essentially volume two of Eric Whitacre: The Complete A Cappella Works. That recording, released by the BYU Singers, continues to be one of the best-selling choral CDs worldwide. This recording includes some of Whitacre's compositions for accompanied choir, but is mostly his a cappella pieces written since 2001. The varied nature of these pieces in this second compilation led to the Singers' collaboration with the BYU Concert Choir, conducted by Rosalind Hall, and the BYU Women's Chorus, conducted at the time by David Thomas. A very highly recommended release!

Songlist: Little Birds, A Boy And A Girl, This Marriage, Her Sacred Spirit Soars, Tmuna, Larov, Eyze sheleg, Rakut, She Weeps Over Rahoon, Little Tree, The Panther, The Cow, The Firefly

BYU Singers : I Believe This Is Jesus

Review: This recording continues the intent of the Singers' two earlier CDs, "We Sing of Christ" and "Songs of the Soul," adding another dimension in expressions of love and faith for Jesus Christ in their interpretations of African-American spirituals. There are 21 classic Spirituals here, the title tune, "Were You There" (sung in concert with the BYU Concert Choir and Men's Chorus), Adolphus Hailstork's "Crucifixion," "By and By," "Ain't Got Time to Die," "See What the End Is Gonna Be" (an original by founder/conductor/arranger Ronald Staheli), Moses Hogan's "I Got a Home in-a dat Rock" "Elijah Rock," Didn't My Lord Daniel Deliver" and "The Battle of Jericho," "Shut de Do'," "Let Me Fly" and "Ain't that News." But there's not a weak cut on this recording- "I Believe" is upbeat, joyous stuff, one of our favorite recordings by a great chorus!

Songlist: I Believe This Is Jesus, Go, Tell It On The Mountain, Were You There, Crucifixion, By and By, Steal Away, Ain't Got Time To Die, See What the End Is Gonna Be, I got a Home in-a dat Rock, Shut de Do', Let me Fly, Rock-a My Soul, Witness, Black Sheep, Little Innocent Lamb, Wade in the Water, Elijah Rock, Is a Light Shinin' in the Heavens, Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel, Ain't that News, The Battle of Jericho

BYU Singers : My Redeemer Lives

Review: In 2003 the veteran, prolific BYU Singers were preparing for a concert tour of Ukraine when war in the Middle East caused its cancellation. They shifted their energies to this new recording, their 4th on the Tantara label, which includes two Ukrainian choral treasures, Dimitri Bortnyansky's "Cherubic Hymn" and Konstantin Shvedov's "To Thee We Sing (Tebe Poyem)." Some other favorites are the title tune, "His Eye Is on the Sparrow," Robert Starer's soaring "Give Thanks unto the Lord," the energetic "Praise the Name of the Lord (Laudate Nomen)," the hymn "Nearer My God to Thee," and Hofford/Millard's sweet "Abide with Me; 'Tis Eventide." Some light piano accompaniment. A beautiful, deeply-felt collection!

BYU Singers : Songs Of The Soul

Review: Founder/arranger Ronald Staheli directs his 47-strong mixed choir in some lovely, rarely-performed Christian choral pieces by such master composers as Eric Whitacre (the 14 _-minute "When David Heard That Absalom Was Slain," and "Water Night"), Morten Lauridsen ("O nata lux,"), Edward Elgar ("Light Eternal (Lux aeterna)"), and John Tanner/Jean Sibelius' ("I Love The Lord"). 13 songs, with some light piano and organ accompaniment. A couple of other favorites: Reynolds/Greene/Belafonte's inspirational "Turn Around," Mary Ann Morton/Alfred Durham's "Sweet Is The Peace," and the final cut, "Give Me Jesus." Another winning recording from this veteran choir.

BYU Singers / University of Miami Chorale : Music of Eric Whitacre

Review: This CD begins with a 3-part, eclectic, dramatic, rich-in-special-effects all-instrumental piece by Eric Whitacre, the "Ghost Train Trilogy," about a supernatural machine that roars through the western US, played by the Rutgers Wind Ensemble. Following that is "GAWD$ILLA EATS LAS VEGAS," a piece Whitacre wanted to write that was "really out there," that includes amazing, all-instrumental dramatic West Side Story and Gershwin samples. A sweet piece by the Rutgers Wind Ensemble follows, "Rak Hahatchala," featuring soprano Hila Plitmann. Then we have the University of Miami Chorale perform Whitacre's beautiful "little tree," (accompanied) with text by e.e. cummings, and two lovely Whitacre pieces by the BYU Singers, "Water Night" and "Cloudburst," both with text by Octavio Paz. These last two a cappella pieces are difficult, eclectic, soaring and lovely. Eric Whitacre is a surprising composer who takes many chances in his work, which is why listening to "The Music of Eric Whitacre" never fails to delight and challenge us.

Camerata Singers : Copland - Works for Chorus

Review: Aaron Copland is best remembered for creating a truly American style of music which is full of folk influences, and melodic and harmonic simplicity. The Old American Songs incorporate folk melodies ranging from minstrel songs (The Boatmen's Dance) to hymns (Simple Gifts) to political satire (The Dodger). Originating as songs for voice and piano, these arrangements by Irving Fine for chorus were authorized by the composer, who himself further expanded the songs for voice and orchestra. "The House on the Hill" and "An Immortality" were both arranged by the recently departed Daniel Pinkham, who was a student of Copland's at Harvard.

Songlist: The Boatmen's Dance, The Dodger, Long Time Ago, Simple Gifts, I Bought Me a Cat, Help Us O Lord, Thou O Jehovah Abideth Forever, Have Mercy On Us, Sing Ye Praises To Our King, The Little Horses, Zion's Walls, The Golden Willow Tree, At the River, Ching-a-Ring Chaw, An Immortality, Las Agachadas, The House on the Hill, The Lark

Camerata Singers : Works of Randall Thompson and Libby Larsen

Review: The Stony Brook (NY) Camerata Singers have sung at prestigious music festivals such as the Utrecht Early Music Festival and the San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival in California. Their 30 mixed voices represent a cross-section of Stony Brook University, and they sing music from all periods, early to modern. While the major works of Randall Thompson (1899-1984) and Libby Larsen (b. 1950) are well-known, this CD offers a unique opportunity to hear some of their smaller works for unaccompanied chorus, and to compare these two American composers separated by half a century. 16 songs: first Thompson's "Antiphon" (1970), then 7 movements of "Mass of the Holy Spirit" (1955), followed by three striking "Sweet and Sour Nursery Rhymes" by Larsen, "There Was a Little Girl", "Little Boy Blue" and "Try, Try Again" (all 3 accompanied by French Horn). Then two by Thompson, "Glory to God in the Highest" (1958) and "Fare Well" (1973) are followed by the complex, dissonant "Bind Me, I Can Still Sing" and "Adrift! A Little Boat Adrift!" by Larsen, and the final cut is Thompson's "The Lark in the Morn" (1938). An interesting contrast of two composers, both brilliant, each with a totally different focus.

Songlist: Mass of the Holy Spirit:, Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, Hosanna, Agnus Dei , Sweet and Sour Nursery Rhymes:, There Was A Little Girl, Little Boy Blue, Try, Try Again, Glory to God in the Highest, Fare Well, Bind Me, Adrift! A Little Boat Adrift!, The lark in the Morn

Cantus : Cantus

Review: Cantus programming at its finest represents a great mix of styles and influences. On their latest release they decided to showcase all this variety on one recording. Included is a new commission from Lee Hoiby paired with a "Lullabye (Goodnight My Angel)" by Billy Joel. They include early 20th century Russian sacred music next to early 21st century American sacred music. They are two show-stoppers - the Smokey Robinson tune "Who's Loving You" and "I Can't Tarry" a rousing African-American spiritual An amusing faux-Finnish piece precedes a semi-theatrical setting of "Casey at the Bat" and the lively programming keeps you listening from beginning to end, just as it does in their acclaimed live concerts.

Cantus : Comfort and Joy Vol 1

Review: Cantus does it again and delivers another top knotch recording and shows how this fine male ensemble is developing into a world class act. This well recorded release features Gregorian chant, folksong arrangements, and major Christmas works for male choir, such as Morten Lauridsen's glorious "O Magnum Mysterium" and Franz Biebl's moving "Ave Maria." Also featured are new arrangements by members of the ensemble of familiar holiday songs, as well as newly commissioned Christmas compositions. The song selection ranges from familiar carols such as "O Little Town of Bethlehem," "I Wonder as I Wander," "The Three Kings," "What Child Is This and "Silent Night," to a Welsh lullaby, "Suo Gan," and "Gabriel's Message," a Basque carol arranged by John Rutter. This CD is intended to go well with a cold night, a roaring fire, and some eggnog. Due to the loving work of John Atkinson and the singers of Cantus, the album is that and more. Cantus : Comfort and Joy Vol 2

Review: Minneapolis/St. Paul's ten-strong, all-male Cantus has impressed us with their excellent earlier recordings and continue to do so with "Comfort and Joy: Volume Two," their second Christmas recording. Song selection and arrangements (and, for that matter, the elegant liner notes) are particularly fine here. Little-known pieces like "Puer natus in Bethlehem," Omnis mundus jucundetur," "Four Carols" by Halsey Stevens," Wm. Dawson's "Hail Mary," the Plainchant "Hodie Christus natus est," the Georgian wassailing song "Alilo," Ariel Ramirez' "Los Reyes Magos" and Babatunde Olatunji's "Betelehemu" with the more traditional carols like "Go Tell it On the Mountain," the French carol "Masters In This Hall," "God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen," "Riiu Riu Chiu," and an almost unrecognizable arrangement of "Deck the Halls." Some percussion and accompaniment. Consistent throughout are the powerful harmonies of Cantus, one of our favorite male ensembles.

Cantus : Introit

Review: The young men of Cantus, an eleven-member ensemble from St. Olaf College, perform choral literature ranging from polyphony and chant to art songs and spirituals. Therefore the Latin "O Sacrum Convivium" (De Victoria) and Tallis' "If Ye Love Me" reside along a 20th century Gustafsson-composed "Kyrie" and "Gloria," the dissonant intervals heralding the epoch of modernism. "Nachtliches Standchen," a romantic lied, a form of which Schubert was master, is included, as is Finzi's "Thou Didst Delight My Eyes." "Shenandoah" and "Danny Boy" are quietly lambent; the acoustics of the church in Minnesota, where this CD was recorded, a perfect setting.

Songlist: Introit for Trinity Sunday: Benedicta sit, O Sacrum Convivium, If Ye Love Me, Thee We Adore, Missa a cappella, Kyrie, Agnus Dei , Our Father, Ave Maria, Nachtlliches Standchen, Thou Didst Delight My Eyes, The Turtle Dove, Danny Boy, Shenandoah, Prayer of the Children, Adoramus te

Cantus : Live Vol. 2

Review: Cantus presents recordings from some of their recent concerts. Highlights include collaborations with the Saint Olaf Choir ("Beautiful Savior" and "Our Father"), guest conductors Dale Warland and Anton Armstrong and performances by Cantus' tenth anniversary reunion choir (Alleluia," "Ave Maria," and "Salvation is Created"). Also included on this eclectic disc is the premiere of "Private First Class Jesse Givens," a setting of a letter from a fallen U.S. soldier in Iraq by American composer Lee Hoiby. Cantus has rapidly developed into one of the finest male choral ensembles performing today and this recording accurately captures that talent.

Songlist: Absalon Fili Mi , Private First Class Jesse Given , Remember Me, Salvation Is Created , Alleluia , Ave Maria, Our Father , Beautiful Saviour, Los Pastores , Mata Del Aninma Sola , When She Loved Me , How Can I Be Sure , Stick To The Craythur, Who's Loving You

Cantus : That Eternal Day

Review: All male, 9-voice a cappella ensemble Cantus, acclaimed by Fanfare as the "premier men's vocal ensemble in the United States," rehearses and performs without a conductor or a music director. "Deep River," Cantus' 2003 album of African-American Spirituals, was so well-received, the group realized that "Singing, in this land we call America, has its roots firmly planted in sacred music." They tells us that the very first book published in the colonies was a Psalter, published in 1640. Tenor Aaron Humble reports, "We were excited to explore the bold shapes and sounds of colonial music and learn how we could juxtapose this unique soundscape with more familiar sacred works like Paul Manz's "E'en So, Lord Jesus, Quickly Come" and Moses Hogan's "Witness."" There are 18 songs here, including some surprising, wonderful cuts like Bobby McFerrin's "The 23rd Psalm (dedicated to my mother)," William Billings' "Anthem, Lamentation Over Boston," the composer's attempt to deal spiritually with the burning of Boston by the British in the American Revolution, its world premiere recording. Other world premiere recordings are "There's a Meeting Here Tonight" arranged by Cantus, "Simple Gifts" arranged by Stephen Caracciolo," "What Have I Done" ("Amazing Grace/House of the Rising Sun," and "Keep Your Lamps," both arranged by Timothy Takach, "Run On (God's Gonna Cut You Down)", arranged by Gary Ruschman, "Been in the Storm" arranged by Cantus, "The Sweet By and By," arranged by Aaron Humble; and "Paradise," arranged by Malcolm Dalglish. Every cut here touches and moves, surprises and delights us-don't miss "That Eternal Day," one of the best of the year!

Songlist: There's a Meeting Here Tonight, Wondrous Love, Simple Gifts, Jewett, What Have I Done, He Never Said a Mumberlin' Word, Run On (God's Gonna Cut You Down), Been In The Storm, Anthem: Lamentation Over Boston, The Sweet By and By, Hallelujah, The 23rd Psalm (dedicated to my mother), Wanting Memories, Paradise, E'en So, Lord Jesus, Quickly Come, Witness, Keep Your Lamps, Goin' Home
