Tudor Choir : An American Christmas - Shapenote Carols from New England and Appalachia

Review: The 17 mixed voices of Seattle's Tudor Choir, founded by Doug Fullington in 1993, have a focused repertoire dedicated to historically informed concerts and recordings with an emphasis on Renaissance, early American and English choral music. While putting together 1996's "The Shapenote Album," the Choir came across "An American Christmas Harp," a shapenote collection, and were inspired to record "An American Christmas. We won't go into defining shapenote, referring you to the 28-page liner notes, but we will say that it's intensely harmonic and spirited, and often includes fugues. 23 songs, some of which we know by other names, "Antioch," for instance, we know as "Joy to the World." Some favorites: "Shiloh," "Sherburne," "Emanuel, For Christmas," "Redemption, S.M.," "Anthem from Luke," "Joys Seven," "Boston, For Christmas," "Bonnie Doon," "Judea," "London," "Raymond" and "Milford." These now obscure songs were once as familiar to rural Americans as "White Christmas." Shapenote is joyous, celebratory music, fun to sing and fun to hear.

Songlist: Shepherd's Star, Shiloh, The Cherry Tree, Antioch, Sherburne, Emanuel for Christmas, Redemption S.M., Anthem for Luke, Joys Seven, Bethlehem C.M, Redemption L.M., Boston for Christmas, Bonnie Doon, Star in the East, Oxford, Judea, New Bethlehem, London, I Saw Three Ships, Raymond, Convoy, Distress, Milford

Tudor Choir : Gentle Words: Shaker Songs

Review: The Seattle-based Tudor Choir is a professional mixed-voice choir with a flexible membership between 10 and 30 singers, founded by director Doug Fullington in 1993. They specialize in Renaissance polyphony and also sings Baroque, early American and 20th century music. "Gentle Words" is their 3rd CD. The Shakers (or United Society of Believers) originated in England in 1747. In 1770 the charismatic Ann Lee became the acknowledged leader, she and 8 others departed for America in 1774 to escape persecution. Their animated and ecstatic worship practices gave rise to their common name. The societies they formed are characterized by pacifism, gender/racial equality and an astounding industriousness and invention. These songs are part of a body of 10,000 Shaker songs. There are 28 a cappella tunes here, all following the Shaker aesthetics of beauty, simplicity and utility. "I will bow and be simple," "In Yonder Valley," "All is summer," "Love is little," "The burning day," the triumphant "Circular march," "Heavenly display," the foot-stomping "Followers of the Lamb," the joyous "Angels of heaven," "Dismission of Great I," "Gentle words," "Beautiful Valley," "Jubilee," "Cords of love" ... There is a quiet beauty and power to these songs--no wonder the Shakers have outlived all other utopian religious groups. Spirited, spiritual music sung beautifully!

Songlist: I will bow and be simple, In yonder valley, All is summer, O Lord make me pure, Love is little, The burning day, Circular march, Help me, O Lord, Heavenly display, Followers of the lamb, Come to Zion, We must be meek, Lay me low, Solemn song, Beautiful treasure, Peace, Angels of heaven, Hunger and thirst, Dismission of Great I, Revelation, Prayer for the captive, Gentle words, Beautiful valley, Jubilee, Exekiel's vision, Almighty Savior , Cords of love, I will go on my way

Tudor Choir : Requiem & Motets - Jacob Clemens non Papa

Review: The Tudor Choir adds to its critically acclaimed collection of recordings with this new CD of music by Renaissance composer Jacob Clemens non Papa (c.1515-c.1555). Clemens composed in all of the expected genres of his time. Much of his music is infused with a personal quality that differs from the generally abstract nature of much Renaissance sacred music. The music on this disc is a survey of his Latin-texted sacred polyphony, including his intimate Requiem, plus a Magnificat setting and a sampling of motets. The pieces chosen for this recording reveal texts that portray such themes as relationships, family, and remembrance and therefore demonstrate the unusual personal quality to be found in Clemens s works.

Songlist: Ecce quam bonum, Deus qui nos patrem et matrem, Requiem, Requiem aeternam, Kyrie, Absolve Domine, Offertory, Domine Jesu Christe, Sanctus and Benedictus, Agnus Dei , Communion: Lux aeterna, Continuo lacrimas, Magnificat quarti toni, Ego me diligentes diligo, Misit me pater vivens, Pater peccavi, Cum esset

Tudor Choir : Simple Gifts

Review: A follow-up to their successful CD of Shaker tunes, "Gentle Words," The Tudor Choir expands the repertoire to include other British and American music of simple character and enduring melody. The Tudor Choir's lovely shaping of phrases, impeccable intonation and unadorned, clean sound allow the words and music to become the Shaker "prayer language," to free the mind from the world, to visit the soul.

Songlist: 'Tis the Gift to be Simple, The Humble Heart, The Star Of Purity, All At Home, Simple Gifts, I am the Rose of Sharon, I Wish I Was A Child Again, Jesus Christ the Apple Tree, My Shepherd Will Supply My Need, Simple Gifts, Zion's Walls, The Hills, At The Water's Edge, He That is Down Need Fear no Fall, O Taste and See, The Call, Loving Shepherd of Thy Sheep, One Thing Have I Desired, The Gift to Be Simple

Tuskegee Institute Choir - William Dawson : Spirituals

Review: The Tuskegee (Alabama) Institute Choir, whose first singers were organized by school founder Booker T. Washington, is steeped in more than a century of pride and the richest of choral traditions. Booker insisted on the singing of African American spirituals by everyone at the weekly chapel worship services, a tradition that continues today. The Choir's most renowned director, composer and education William L. Dawson led the Choir into a new era in 1932, with their appearance at the opening of Radio City Music Hall in NYC, which would lead to performances before Presidents, radio and television audiences and worldwide prestige. There are 15 spirituals here, with innovative arrangements, powerful harmonies and solos; all sung with deep feeling and spirit. Simply the best versions we've heard of classic standards "Ezekiel Saw De Wheel," "Deep River," "There is a Balm in Gilead," "Ev'ry Time I Hear the Spirit," "Were You There," "Ain'a That Good News," "Mary Had A Baby" "King Jesus is A-Listening" and "Rockin' Jerusalem." One of the best, most authentic Gospel CDs of the year, by one of America's oldest and most respected Gospel choirs!

Songlist: Ezekiel Saw De Wheel, Deep River, I Couldn't Hear Nobody Pray, There Is A Balm In Gilead, Hail Mary, I've Been 'Buked, Behold The Star, Ev'ry Time I Hear The Spirit, Were You There, I Want To Be Ready, Listen To The Lambs, Ain'a That Good News, Mary Had A Baby, King Jesus Is A'Listening, Rockin' Jerusalem

Review: The 23 mixed voices of the UCLA Madrigal Singers was directed by Donn Weiss for 25 years. In addition to regular tours throughout the Western US and Canada, the group has traveled to Australia and Hawaii, and provided vocal music for Hollywood films like "Tron." UCLA Madrigal Singers : Hark, How The Bells

Review: The UCLA Madrigal Singers, the 22 member mixed-voice premiere chamber choir led by director/arranger Donn Weiss, brings us this "best-of" holiday album, which represents nearly 25 years of audience favorites, the best-loved Christmas songs heard at Royce Hall and at their traditional Twelfth Night concerts. We of course enjoy standards like "Angels We Have Heard on High," "Deck the Hall," "O Holy Night" and "Stille Nacht," but we particularly like more obscure music like Catherine Bennett's "Christ Child Carol," Benjamin Britten's "Christ Child Carol," the Scottish Carol "Balloo Lammy," Herbert Howells' "A Spotless Rose," the Spanish "Carol of the Birds," Daniel Pinkham's "Come Love We God," the Austrian carol "Still, Still, Still," and the Puerto Rican folksong "De Tierra Legana Venimos." The full, rich sound of the Singers makes "Bells" ring out as a very special and varied Christmas collection. Occasional light accompaniment.

Songlist: Angels We Have Heard on High, Deck the Hall, Christ Child Carol, A Boy Was Born, Baloo Lammy, Flemish Carol, A Spotless Rose, Joy to the World, In the Bleak Midwinter, Carol of the Birds, Come, Love We God, Still, Still, Still, Bring a Torch, Jeannette, Isabella, Carol of the Bells, De Tierra Lejana Venimos, O Holy Night, Love Came Down at Christmas, Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence, Pat-a-pan, A Christmas, Estampie Natalis, Stille Nacht

University of Miami Chorale : Love Of My Soul

Review: This is a lovely program by the University of Miami Chorale. Led by Jo-Michael Scheibe the choir explores sacred and secular love. The program begins with O vos omnes by Victoria and an Ave Maria by Steven Edwards. Scheibe puts a spin on the Mass. In an Eclectic Missa Brevis he pairs two movements from Byrd's Mass for Four Voices with two movements from the Messe by Frank Martin. Some interesting pieces are the five Hebrew love songs by Eric Whitacre. They are set to poetry by Hila Plitman and accompanied by string quartet. This CD is a nice mixture of styles and is well sung.

Songlist: O vos omnes, Ave Maria, An Eclectic Missa Brevis:, - Kyrie (from the Mass for Four Voices), Gloria (from the Messe), Sanctus (from the Messe), Agnus Dei (from the Mass for Four Voices), Five Hebrew Love Songs:, - Temuna, - Kala kalla, - Larov, - Eyze Sheleg!, - Rakut, Selections from Neue Liebeslieder, op. 65, - Verzicht, o Herz, auf Retung, - Finstere Schatten der Nacht, - Ihr schwarzen Augen, ihr durft nur winken, - Rosen steckt mir an die mutter, - Vom Gebirge Well' auf Well', - Weiche Graser im Revier, - Nagen am Herzen, - Alles, alles in den Wind, - Schwarzer Walk, dein Schatten, - Nein, Geliebter, setze dich mir, - Flammenauge, dunkles Haar, - Zum Schluss: Nun, ihr Musen, genug!, Las Agachadas, Dear Sarah, The Gartan Mother's Lullaby, Two Rose Songs:, - The Lovely Rose, - Go Lovely Rose, Amor de me Alma

Ellingboe's original piece, "Be Music, Night," is featured. Voice faculty Jaccqueline Zander-Wall, a mezzo soprano, is featured in the classic, "What a Wonderful World." "The name of the CD comes from the second line in the song 'Abide with Me.' The CD is comprised of gentle music about evening, music and the night. University of Texas Chamber Singers : American Choral Music

Review: This anthology brings together representative works from the mainstream of contemporary American choral music. Charles Ives's Psalm 90 evokes a mood reminiscent of congregational Sunday singing in New England. Copland's In the Beginning recalls his Fanfare for the Common Man, while Lukas Foss's Behold, I Build An House shows the stylistic influence of Copland. Vincent Persichetti's Flower Songs reveal his deep commitment to his favourite poet E.E. Cummings, and favours the women's voices. In Fern Hill, set for alto, chorus and orchestra, composer John Corigliano sings of the joys of youth.

Songlist: Flower Songs, Psalm 90, Fern Hill, Behold, I Build An House, In The Beginning

Part of their repertoire which is often requested are sea chanties and songs of the sea. Originally they were organized in 1956 as an all male chorus. Female voices were added in 1980. Review: In 1991 founder and artistic director Philip Brunelle and 24 mixed-voice VocalEssence presented "Witness," the first of an enduring series of concerts focused on the music of African American Composers. It was taken from "Witness: Six Original Compositions in a Spiritual Style," commissioned for Jubilant Sykes and VocalEssence. Visiting several area high schools while soloist Sykes was in Minneapolis for the premiere led VocalEssence to create an award-winning educational outreach program, bringing the talents of African Americans to thousands of Minnesota school students. A Woodwind Quintet and Jazz Ensemble perform with VocalEssence on the 18 pieces of "Dance Like The Wind," Undine Smith Moore's lovely "Mother to Son," "We Shall Walk Through the Valley" and "Tambourines to Glory," the title tune--William Banfield's beautiful instrumental, "My Soul Hath Found Refuge In Thee" (Psalm 91), by Evelyn Simpson-Curenton," Adolphus Hailstork's soaring "Nocturne," two selections from Billy Childs' "Piece for Stringed Orchestra" and David Baker's eclectic "Images, Shadows and Dreams: Five Vignettes." "Dance Like the Wind" is thought-provoking and moving music by eight modern, cutting-edge African American composers.

Voices of Ascension : Can't Help Singing

Review: The voices of Ascension sing new choral arrangements of favorite Kern songs - in styles ranging from swinging Browdway (I Won't Dance; Can't Help Singing) to a timeless classical tone (All The Things You Are; Smoke Gets in Your Eyes). Dennis Keene's talented singers are accompanied variously by orchestra, harp, and string quartet, leading to some surprising moments such as a solo oboe emerging from the orchestra in a poignant Long Ago and Far Away. There is also the beautiful a cappella singing listeners have come to expect from Voices of Ascension - as in the rich 8-part version of All The Things You Are.

Songlist: Can't Forget You, All The Tings You Are, I Won't Dance, Don't Ever Leave Me, Pick Yourself Up, Make Believe, Why Was I Born Born, A Fine Romance, Can't Help Singing, They Didn't Believe Me, The Song Is You , Long Ago And Far Away, I'm Old Fashioned, You Couldn't Be Cuter, The Way You Look Tonight, Ol' Man River, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, Yesterdays, Don't Ever Leave Me

Voices of Ascension : Hear My Prayer

Review: Voices of Ascension evolved from a 1989 concert series of Church of the Ascension in NYC, when Dennis Keene directed the Ascension choir in a major music festival, "Tribute to Durufle," a retrospective of the French composer that drew international attention. The following year the group incorporated separately from the church as Voices of Ascension. The number of singers in the professional ensemble varies from 20 to 40, among the finest and most skilled ensemble singers and soloists in the country. Metropolitan Opera star Hei-Kyung Hong blesses the VOA with a lyric soprano voice of uncommon beauty and warmth. 15 selections; right from the beginning Randall Thompson's soaring a cappella "Alleluia" and Mozart's "Laudate Dominum" show off the amazing soprano voice of Hei-Kyung Hong. Two by Pablo Casals, "Tota Pulchra" and "Nigra Sum," Felix Mendelsson's "Hear My Prayer" and Durufle's "Tu es Petrus" make it abundantly clear that we are in the presence of greatness. Nicolai Tolstiakov's "Blagoslovi, dushe moya, Ghospoda (Bless the Lord, O My Soul)," Tchaikovsky's "Bazheni, yazhe izbral (How blessed are they)," Charles Villiers Stanford's "Beati quorum via" and the final cut, Mendelssohn's "Happy and blessed are they" leave us in stunned silence after listening to the angels. Some organ accompaniment. Amazing!

Songlist: And I Saw a New Heaven, Alleluia , Laudate Dominum , Tota Pulchra , Nigra Sum, Hear My Prayer , I was glad when they said unto me , Tu es Petrus , Panis angelicus , Like as the Hart, Blagoslovi dushe moya, Ghospoda (Bless the Lord, O My Soul) , Blazheni, yazhe izbral (How blessed are they), Pieta, Signore, Beati quorum via , Happy and blessed are they

Voices of Ascension : Mysteries Beyond - In Praise of Mary

Review: "Mysteries" is a very special collection of the Keene's and the Voices of Ascension's favorite pieces from many periods and countries having to do with Mary, mother of Jesus. Two of our favorites are two of the oldest pieces on the recording, the lovely a cappella "Alma Redemptoris Mater" by Giovanni Palestrina and Tomas Luis de Victoria's classic "Ave Maria." Other favorites are Anton Bruckner's "Gradual: Os Justi," Gabriel Faure's "Tantum Ergo," which only grows more beautiful with repeated hearings, Schubert's "Die Allmacht" and "Psalm 23," Pablo Casals' "Eucaristica," Charles Gounod's "Ave Maria," and Felix Mendelssohn's "Psalm 43." Some light accompaniment by harp, piano and organ. New York City's 38-strong, mixed-voice Voices of Ascension is one of our favorite choirs recording sacred music, and "Mysteries" is an inspiring joy from the first cut to the last!

Songlist: Alma Redemptoris Mater, Gradual: Os Justi , Tantum Ergo , Ave Maria , Ave Maria , Tota Pulchra Es , Ave Maria , Die Allmacht, Ave Maria , Eucaristica , Ave Maria , Psalm 23 , Psalm 43 , Ave Maria , Cantique de Jean Racine , Ubi Caritas

Voices of Ascension : Prince of Music - Palestrina

Review: One of the finest (and most prolific) mixed choirs recording sacred music we have heard, NYC's exquisite Voices of Ascension turns their attention to Giovanni Pierluigi de Palestrina, the most famous Italian composer of his day. Laid to rest in one of the side chapels of St. Peter's in Rome at his death in 1594, the plaque on his coffin is inscribed "Prince of Music." Included here are the 6-part "Missa Papae Marcelli" and the 7th part, "Agnus Dei II," 8 "Motets and Offertories," and bonus tracks "Alma Redemptoris Mater," "Sicut cervus" and its second part, "Sitivit anima mea." The music is all a cappella, and to listen to any random movement, such as "Credo," "Sanctus," "Tue es Petrus" or "Peccantem me quotidie" is to hear the songs of angels, some of the most beautiful a cappella music ever written!

Songlist: Missa Papae Marcelli ~ Kyrie eleison, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, Angus Dei I, Secundum multitudinem, Tu es Petrus, Dum complerentur, O Domine Jesu Christe, Super flumina Babilonis, Canite tuba, Rorate coeli, Peccantem me quotidie, Agnus Dei II, Alma Redemptoris Mater, Sicut cervus, Sitivit anima mea

Voices of Ascension : The Durufle Album

Review: Organist and Choirmaster of the Church of the Ascension Dennis Keene has dedicated a large part of his career to the music of Maurice Durufle, having conducted all of the French composer's choral works in performance. Here are Durufle's finest sacred works, the 9 soaring, dramatic movements of "Requiem, Op. 9," "Messe 'Cum Jubilo," Op. 11," and the lovely short piece, "Notre Pere." All orchestra-accompanied with some nice viola, violoncello, horn and harp solos. Vocal solos by Patricia Spence and Francois Le Roux are standouts. The Voices of Ascension is one of our favorite mixed choirs and "Album" is a wonderful collection of works by the master 20th century sacred composer.

Voices of Ascension : Voices of Angels

Review: With this recording New York City's Voices of Ascension and Conductor Keene celebrate the 900th birthday of one of the most remarkable creative spirits of the Middle Ages, the Abbess Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179). Although some musicians embellish Hildegard's single line chants with additional parts, the Voices of Ascension's approach is to present the inspired poetry and music of this mystic visionary "pure," without any contemporary additions. We are hearing, in these 14 haunting pieces, the Women of the Voices of Ascension, a mixed-voice choir on all their other excellent recordings. Soloists Kathy Theil, Michele Eaton, Alexandra Montano and Allessandra Visconti are particularly wonderful on cuts like "O virga ac diadema," "Vos Flores Rosarum," "Et Ideo," "O Pastor animarum,""Caritas Abundat," "Ave, generosa" and "O Jerusalem, aurea civitatus." All beautiful, soaring a cappella. This is simple, powerful music that touches and speaks to us across more than 8 centuries, in a way that its composer could never have imagined.

Songlist: O virga ac diadema, O viridissima virga, Vos Flores Rosarum, O Ecclesia, Columba aspexit, Et Ideo, O Euchari columba, O Pastor animarum, O clarissima mater, Caritas Abundat, O presul vere civitatis, Ave, generosa, Unde Quocumque, O lerusalem, aurea civitatis

Voices Of Lee : Encore

Review: Eight men and six women form the acclaimed Voices of Lee (University of Cleveland, TN), directed since their debut in 1994 by Danny Murray, apply their rich harmonic blend and top-drawer soloists to their fourth winning album. "Encore" begins with Barry Manilow's "One Voice," a jazzy, upbeat "Power in Praisin' the Lord," a striking, powerful vocal-percussion gem, "Mercy Seat," the heartfelt "Ho, Everyone Who Is Thirsty" (arranged by Derrick Johnson), a scattish, bright arrangement of "Lord, I Lift Your Name on High," the Doo-Woppy Gospel number "When God Dips His Love," the traditional hymns "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Have You Met Jesus" (both also arranged by Johnson), and a bonus track of "Mercy Seat," our personal favorite. Ten songs in total, and there's not a weak track among them. Confident solos, solid harmonies, great arrangements-"Encore" just knocked our socks off! It's one of the best Contemporary Christian albums we've heard this year.
