Voena : Voices of Dreams -15th Anniversary

Review: Dynamic director Annabelle Marie leads her renowned children's choir, comprised of American children ages 6 to 18, representing 35 cultures in this marvelous, memorable album. Marie founded VOENA (Voices of Eve 'N Angels) in 1994 in Benicia, CA with 12 members, and the numbers soon grew. No auditions are needed to join, just a desire to sing and a willingness to work at it. Since then 150-member VOENA has become one of the country's most successful children's choirs, invited to perform in China, Italy, Greece and Mexico; performing 5 times at the White House, at Carnegie Hall, and has represented the U.S. at South Africa's Soweto Music Festival. There are 19 songs here, some of our favorites are the piano-accompanied English/Zulu song "He Lives in You," the traditional Ghana tune "Celebrate Asante," Annabelle Marie's lovely drum, guitar and piano accompanied "Voices Dream," the harp accompanied Celtic "Isle of Innisfree," the Gaelic songs "Kimberly" and "One More Day;" the guitar and violin accompanied Hebrew song "Erev Shel Shoshanim," Lennon & McCartney's "Blackbird" and "Let It Be;" "Mist and Shadow" with music by Billy Boyd and lyrics by J.R.R. Tolkein; the Macedonian tune "Tatkovina," the English/French song "I Believe in You" and so many others. Crystal clear solos, spirited harmonies, and literally the voices of angels on this joyous, inspirational, well-chosen collection. Treat yourself to this feel-good album and become an instant fan of director Marie and her wonderful choir!

Voices of Ascension : Can't Help Singing

Review: The voices of Ascension sing new choral arrangements of favorite Kern songs - in styles ranging from swinging Browdway (I Won't Dance; Can't Help Singing) to a timeless classical tone (All The Things You Are; Smoke Gets in Your Eyes). Dennis Keene's talented singers are accompanied variously by orchestra, harp, and string quartet, leading to some surprising moments such as a solo oboe emerging from the orchestra in a poignant Long Ago and Far Away. There is also the beautiful a cappella singing listeners have come to expect from Voices of Ascension - as in the rich 8-part version of All The Things You Are.

Songlist: Can't Forget You, All The Tings You Are, I Won't Dance, Don't Ever Leave Me, Pick Yourself Up, Make Believe, Why Was I Born Born, A Fine Romance, Can't Help Singing, They Didn't Believe Me, The Song Is You , Long Ago And Far Away, I'm Old Fashioned, You Couldn't Be Cuter, The Way You Look Tonight, Ol' Man River, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, Yesterdays, Don't Ever Leave Me

Voices of Ascension : Hear My Prayer

Review: Voices of Ascension evolved from a 1989 concert series of Church of the Ascension in NYC, when Dennis Keene directed the Ascension choir in a major music festival, "Tribute to Durufle," a retrospective of the French composer that drew international attention. The following year the group incorporated separately from the church as Voices of Ascension. The number of singers in the professional ensemble varies from 20 to 40, among the finest and most skilled ensemble singers and soloists in the country. Metropolitan Opera star Hei-Kyung Hong blesses the VOA with a lyric soprano voice of uncommon beauty and warmth. 15 selections; right from the beginning Randall Thompson's soaring a cappella "Alleluia" and Mozart's "Laudate Dominum" show off the amazing soprano voice of Hei-Kyung Hong. Two by Pablo Casals, "Tota Pulchra" and "Nigra Sum," Felix Mendelsson's "Hear My Prayer" and Durufle's "Tu es Petrus" make it abundantly clear that we are in the presence of greatness. Nicolai Tolstiakov's "Blagoslovi, dushe moya, Ghospoda (Bless the Lord, O My Soul)," Tchaikovsky's "Bazheni, yazhe izbral (How blessed are they)," Charles Villiers Stanford's "Beati quorum via" and the final cut, Mendelssohn's "Happy and blessed are they" leave us in stunned silence after listening to the angels. Some organ accompaniment. Amazing!

Songlist: And I Saw a New Heaven, Alleluia , Laudate Dominum , Tota Pulchra , Nigra Sum, Hear My Prayer , I was glad when they said unto me , Tu es Petrus , Panis angelicus , Like as the Hart, Blagoslovi dushe moya, Ghospoda (Bless the Lord, O My Soul) , Blazheni, yazhe izbral (How blessed are they), Pieta, Signore, Beati quorum via , Happy and blessed are they

Voices Of Lee : Encore

Review: Eight men and six women form the acclaimed Voices of Lee (University of Cleveland, TN), directed since their debut in 1994 by Danny Murray, apply their rich harmonic blend and top-drawer soloists to their fourth winning album. "Encore" begins with Barry Manilow's "One Voice," a jazzy, upbeat "Power in Praisin' the Lord," a striking, powerful vocal-percussion gem, "Mercy Seat," the heartfelt "Ho, Everyone Who Is Thirsty" (arranged by Derrick Johnson), a scattish, bright arrangement of "Lord, I Lift Your Name on High," the Doo-Woppy Gospel number "When God Dips His Love," the traditional hymns "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Have You Met Jesus" (both also arranged by Johnson), and a bonus track of "Mercy Seat," our personal favorite. Ten songs in total, and there's not a weak track among them. Confident solos, solid harmonies, great arrangements-"Encore" just knocked our socks off! It's one of the best Contemporary Christian albums we've heard this year.

Voices Of Lee : In God's Hands

Review: The 18 mixed voices of Cleveland, TN-based Lee University's Voices of Lee, directed by Danny Murray, have a lush musical style noted for its excellence in harmony, spirit and performance. Since their debut in 1994, this Contemporary Christian a cappella group has delighted audiences worldwide with a repertoire of high-energy patriotic numbers, and heartfelt gospel favorites. Voices of Liberty : Christmas in Velvet Vol V

Review: Quite probably the busiest performing a cappella group in the country The Voices of Liberty are also one of the longest running professional a cappella groups as they perform several sets each and every day at Disney World in Orlando, Florida. The group follows in an even longing-running tradition of Regeneration, as both are almost the same as they were both directed by, and perform almost exclusively the arrangements of, the great Derric Johnson. This release follows the four highly successful and still very popular "Christmas in Velvet" recordings and this is a most welcome addition to the series. Derric's arrangements are very distinctive and are seemingly very complex yet very simple all at the same time. One can listen to the songs on different levels either just relaxing and let the voices wash over you or listen intently to every nuance of the arrangement. The company of singers who make up the ensemble are also top-notch and include a barbershop international champion, some rocking contemporary singers and many professional voices that all blend marvelously. If you loved their previous recordings you simply must have this recording.

Songlist: Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, Sing We Now of Christmas, Christmas Time Is Here, Frosty the Snowman, Down The Stairway of Stars, Hallelujah Chorus, O Come, O Come Emmanuel, Rise Up Shepherd and Follow, Still, Still, Still, Mary's Little Boy, O Little Town of Bethlehem, Let There Be Peace on Earth

Volti : Since When Has The Bright Moon Existed?

Review: This set of world premiere recordings showcases the stunning talent of Chinese-American composer Kui Dong. The grandeur of "Shui Diao Ge Tou and Song" is performed brilliantly by San Francisco's adventurous choir Volti, led fearlessly by conductor Robert Geary, who also presents the heartfelt "Let Frogs and Crickets Carry It On" with the Piedmont Children's Choir. The recording is rounded off by a stark set of piano works and the unlikely pairing of the Melody of China ensemble with the Del Sol String Quartet.

Songlist: Shui Diao Ge Tou and Song, Miniature V, Miniature VI, Miniature VII, Let Frogs and Crickets Carry It On, Spring (Re-Mastered), Summer, Autumn, Winter

Volti : Turn The Page

Review: Volti, San Francisco's 20-voice professional chamber choir, has achieved national recognition as pioneers in new vocal music: they are the first and only chorus to have won ASCAP/Chorus America's Adventurous Programming of Contemporary Music Award six times. This disc shows what the buzz is all about, with works by eight contemporary American composers, five of them commissioned and premiered by Volti, under its founder and artistic director Robert Geary. Opening the disc is the first recording of all four movements of Aaron Jay Kernis' stunning and hypnotic Ecstatic Meditations, named by the National Endowment for the Arts as an American Masterpiece of Choral Music. Also featured is the first recording of a major new work by Volti's resident composer Mark Winges, Open the Book of What Happened (2005). Other never-before-recorded Volti commissions include Kurt Rohde's Endless, a six-part setting of luminous, elliptical poetry by Jakob Stein (2007); Gabriela Lena Frank's startling, rhythmic Ccollanan Maria!, a multicultural mix of traditional Catholic imagery with ancient Incan ritual (2004); two of Stacy Garrop's Sonnets of Beauty and Music, part of her project to set 23 sonnets of Edna St. Vincent Millay (2006); and Eric Moe's O the Flesh is Hot but the Heart is Cold (2005) - about which all we can say is that any piece of music based on a poem titled "Baked Alaska: a Theory of" just begs to be tasted

Review: The 30 talented women of Vox Femina LA, directed by Dr. Iris S. Vox Femina : Still I Rise

Review: Los Angeles' 31-strong women's ensemble Vox Femina blew us away with their 2002 debut album "Simply," and we have waited a long time to be able to hold CD #2 in our hot little hands. "Still I Rise," directed by Dr. Iris S. Levine and accompanied by Lisa Edwards on piano, celebrates Vox Femina's 10th anniversary season, highlighting the best of Vox's live performances. The 15 very different songs share fine arranging, flawless performances, and the exciting fact that they are live recordings. The rhythmic opening cut "Odi Odi," the spiritual "Deep River," Hildegard von Bingen and Roger Bourland's "O viridissima virga/Both Page and Pen;" Debussy's "Salut Printemps;" Ysaye M. Barnwell's lovely "Breaths;" Roy Brown's "Sky Dances;" Stuart Stotts' "Music in My Mother's House," Holly Near's "Imagine my Surprise;" Marvin Hamlisch and Edward Kleban's "At the Ballet" and the title tune by Rosephanye Powell are some favorites. But Vox is very special group of women, a bridge-building group, and each of these songs needs to be listened to, appreciated and savored. Besides piano, you might hear some flute, drums, bass, guitar, oboe and zils. Exquisite!

Songlist: Odi Odi, Ah! si mon moine voulait danser, Deep River, O viridissima virga /, Both Page and Pen, Salut Printemps, Ya Faraoule, Breaths, Yo le Canto Todo el Dia, Sky Dances, Sweet Woman, Music in My Mother's House, Imagine my Surprise, At the Ballet, Closer to Fine, Still I Rise

Vox Musica : Christmas Colours

Review: Vox Musica is a 13-strong, women's choral ensemble from Sacramento, CA, directed by Daniel Paulsen, and "Christmas Colours" was recorded in Sacramento's St. Paul's Episcopal Church. We could tell we were hearing something very special here with the first of 12 Christmas tunes, John Tavener's difficult, soaring and often dissonant "A Nativity" and Cesar Carrillo's "Ave Maria," which the group handled beautifully and easily. A very sweet 17th Century German Carol, "Es Sungen Drei Engel," the lilting, joyous "Gaudete, a 16th Century Finnish Carol, Franz Biebl's lovely "Zundet An Das Licht," Tavener's "The Lord's Prayer," the 16th Century Irish melody "Love Came Down At Christmas," Nancy Telfer's 4-part "Missa Brevis" and "Silent Night," nicely arranged by Paulsen, completed the album. Many of these songs are new to us, and we were surprised and delighted to hear them. Listen to the echoing, soaring song of angels, "Love Came Down At Christmas," and you will see what we mean!

Songlist: A Nativity, Ave Maria, Es Sungen Drei Engel, Gaudete, Zundet An Das Licht, The Lord's Prayer, Love Came Down At Christmas, Missa Brevis - Kyrie, Missa Brevis - Gloria, Missa Brevis - Sanctus, Missa Brevis - Agnus Dei, Silent Night

Washington Men's Camerata : Brothers Sing On!

Review: The ancient art of men's choral singing began early in the history of western music. From its roots in Jewish liturgical chant and the monastic chants of the early Christian church, through groups of troubadours in Medieval France and the male singing societies of nineteenth-century England and Germany, the male chorus has a rich and varied history, influenced by many of the world's most important cultures and religions. In modern times, male chorus traditions are carried on by collegiate and community choruses in dozens of countries around the world. With this program, the Washington Men's Camerata begins a series of recordings of some of the timeless gems of our repertoire, with the hope that this lasting testament to the power of men's voices raised in song will serve to inspire future generations of singers.

Washington Men's Camerata : Masters In This Hall - Christmas Music For Men's Chorus

Review: Thomas Beveridge and the Washington Men's Camerata give glorious and joyful performances on this Christmas recording. The triumphant title piece "Masters in this Hall" begins with the chorus and a soft drum beat that eventually grows to include organ and virtuosic piano. This and most of the other pieces are arranged by Beveridge, who is very accomplished in writing for men's voices. Juxtaposing the male sound are several soprano solos sung by Rosa Lamoreaux including "The First Mercy" by Peter Warlock. Other highlights include Beveridge's arrangement of "The Shepherds' Farewell" from Berlioz's L'Enfance du Christ and Biebl's peaceful "Ave Maria."

Songlist: Carol of the Drum, The First Mercy, O Maria, Diana Stella, The Three Holy Kings, Lo, How a Rose e'er Blooming, The Shepherds' Farewell, Ave Maria, O Tannenbaum/Adeste Fideles, Wassail Song, The Holly and the Ivy, Carol of the Birds, March of the Kings, O Holy Night, Carol of the Bells, Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, El est ne, Quittez Pasteurs, In Dulci Jubilo/Angels We Have Heard on High

Western Wind : An Almost A Cappella Songbook

Review: The members of Western Wind, four men and two women, share an incredible depth of experience and scholarship. Combine that a musical sensitivity that embraces almost any genre, and the result is a "musical history tour." Beginning with the medieval, the group includes Rennaissance polyphony, African-American spirituals and Duke Ellington swing on their journey. "Dolcissimo Uscignolo" and "L'Amfiparnaso" border on the operatic. Philip Glass' "Vessels" (Glass is a contemporary composer of some repute) takes as a central concept a repetitive series of intervals, minor second, major second, minor third, though not in that order, juxtaposed against an arpeggiated scale or repeated tone, conveying a marvelous sense of energy, upward movement and growth. Fifties doo-wop takes a turn with "Sh'boom, Life Could Be A Dream," though the vocal style is much too refined to resemble the original version(s). Four tracks have minimal accompaniment.

Songlist: Introduction:, O Western Wind, Medieval:, Sumer is Icumen In, Flos Regalis, Se d'Amer Me Repentoie, Irme Quiero Madre, Renaissance:, Ay Luna, Miraculous Love's Wounding, L'Amfiparnaso, Act I, Scene I, Dolcissimo Uscignolo, Contemporary:, Vessels, Zango, Mexico Fellaheen, Spirituals:, Amazing Grace / The Promised Land, I Believe This Is Jesus, Folk, Pop, & Jazz, I'm too Tired to Tell You That I Love You, 'Round Midnight, I'm Beginning to See the Light, It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing), Sh'boom, Life Could Be a Dream, Canary in a Coal Mine, Wimowen, That Lonesome Road

Western Wind : The Chanukkah Story

Review: Twenty-five tracks narrated by Theodore Bikel, who explains and describes much of the tradition associated with each composition, this frequently and beautifully accompanied CD reflects the "diverse and multi-national nature of the Jewish experience." The detailed liner notes further elaborate on Jewish history and the CD's content, which encompasses Sephardic songs, folk melodies, European nineteenth-century classical, and more. Westminster Choir : Singing For Pleasure

Review: Director and conductor of The 37 mixed-voice Westminster Choir College of Rider University in Princeton, NJ since 1971, Joseph Flummerfelt has made the Choir synonymous with musical excellence, working with eminent conductors and performing with the world's major orchestras. "Singing for Pleasure" is all about Brahms, and has 23 pieces, 9 movements of "Liebeslieder-Walzer, Op. 52, the 3 sweet a cappella movements of "Deutsche Volkslieder," 5 movements of "Zigeunerlieder, Op. 103," "O Heiland, Reiss Die Himmel Auf, Op. 74, No. 2," Four Quartets, and Neue Liebeslieder-Walzer, Op. 65." Most songs are piano-accompanied. The Westminster is the perfect choir for this music, with the strength and passion for a dramatic piece like "No. 5 Braunner Bursche fuhrt zum Tanze," and the perfect harmonic pitch for pieces like "In stiller Nacht" and "No. 7 Kommt dir manchmal in den Sinn." A lovely collection of lesser-known works by the master composer.

William Appling Singers : Shall We Gather

Review: Most of the hymns on this recording were written in the 19th century or before, when Americans in general thought more about God than they do today. The hymns and spirituals on this recording are among the great discoveries faith has made about itself, through words and music that now belong to us all. For a period of about 250 years, from the arrival of the Puritans to nearly the end of the 19th century, the most pervasive musical form in America was the hymn. While Protestant hymns and Negro spirituals were certainly the predominant hymnody in America throughout this time, other denominational hymns were written and sung as well. The first hymnal for the Jewish congregation in Charleston, South Carolina was compiled in 1843 and the Shakers have given us some of the most beautiful and interesting religious songs that have been written in America. This recording was made at a live concert at Christ & St. Stephen's Church in New York City. Beautifully sung by the William Appling Singers, this recording will satisfy both the Americana scholar, the music lover and those of faith.

Songlist: Liberty Hall, Rise, Shine, for Thy Light Is A-Coming, Welwyn, Pisgah, Poor Rosy, I've Just Come from the Fountain, Let Us Cheer the Weary Traveler, Nettleton, Wondrous Love, Gospel Train, Shining Shore, More Love, In Mercy, Lord, Beautiful River, Some of These Days, The Old Ship of Zion, St Peter, Missionary Chant, Inching Along, Watchman, Hurry On, My Weary Soul, Morning Trumpet, He's a Mighty Good Leader, Hold On, Resignation, We Shall Walk Through the Valley

William Ferris Chorale : Snowcarols - Christmas Music by William Ferris

Review: Attractive choral works by an important American composer (and choral director). Title track "Snowcarols" was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize when it was written in 1980. The William Ferris Chorale is one of the finest mid-sized choirs in the nation. "The William Ferris Chorale sang beautifully - they had style and a lovely sound - a superb job." - The Washington Post. "For more than three decades the William Ferris Chorale has occupied a special niche in the Chicago area's rich choral music scene. The ensemble has regained its well-remembered form since Paul French became music director. He has infused it with new vitality, new vision, new purpose." - Chicago Tribune

The artistic director, and the only man at TWCD rehearsals, is Dr. Tim Selig. Their principal accompanist and arranger is Anne Albritton, whose piano graces all the songs. There are 17 great songs from the 40s here, but actually many more; "Train Medley," for instance, includes "Take the A Train," "Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe," "Chattanooga Choo-Choo," and "Choo-Choo Ch'Boogie." Women's Chorus of Dallas : Only Human

Review: The 120-voices strong TWCD, directed by Dr. Timothy Selig, closes its 10th season with this recording of its first major commissioned work, "Only Human." Composer Robert Seeley of the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus, and librettist Philip Littell spent many hours listening to the women of the chorus, and from that came over 30 pieces of poetry, of which 13 were set to music. All songs are performed with full orchestra. This is TWCD's sixth CD in addition to four collaborative CDs with the Turtle Creek Chorale, it has made its Carnegie Hall debut, and has received two GLAMA nominations. "Only Human" is a touching, monumental, deeply personal achievement.

Review: Listen to rousing gospel songs, an eloquent arrangement of the hymn Amazing Grace by Ron Jeffers, Vivaldi's spirited Beatus Vir accompanied by the Jubilate Orchestra strings, contemporary works by composers such as Andrew Carter, Otmar Macha, and WomenSing's commissioned work by Libby Larsen. As its title suggests, the emotions portrayed will run the gamut as well: from the mystery of Annunciation to the menacing meandering of The Wendigo; from the full range experience of love fulfilled in the sensual Nigra Sum by Catalunyan composer Pau Casals, to the dreamy lilting of the Canadian folk tune Away From the Roll of the Sea.

World Voices : A Global Palette

Review: Dr. Karle Erickson, Artistic Director and Conductor, formed World Voices in 1996, first of 25 mixed voice singers who had sung previously with him. That number has now grown to an ensemble of voices and instruments of 40 singers, ages 21 to 75. The instrumentalists are chosen because of their association to the specific culture that is the focus of that concert. "Global Palette" is a smorgasbord of 17 tunes from different countries, beginning with 3 Russian tunes, "Kalinka," Gretchaninoff's "Our Father" and Rachmaninoff's "O Come, Let Us Worship." A pair of Israeli songs, "Zum Gali-Dance the Hora!" and Josef Hadar's "Erev Shel Shoshanim," the Japanese children's song "Hotaru Koi," the Mohawk dance song "Innoria" and a nice 7-song medley of "American Indian Songs" by Kenneth Jennings follow. Cuccini's "Ave Maria" and Scarlatti's "Exultate Deo" from Italy, "Ave Maria" by Brazilian composer Heitor Villa Lobos, and the vibrant "Gloria from Misa Criolla" by Ariel Ramirez of Argentina are very fine, as is "Chile Lindo" by Clara Solvera. 4 beautifully done American folk tunes close the program, Stephen Foster's "Old Folks at Home" and "Cindy" are standouts. Some light accompaniment. A fine, varied collection by talented World Voices.

Songlist: Kalinka, Our Father, O Come, Let Us Worship , Zum Gali, Erev Shel Shoshanim, Hotaru Koi , Innoria , American Indian Songs, Ave Maria, Exulte Deo , Ave Maria, Gloria, Chile Lindo , Shenandoah, I've Been Working On The Working On The Railroad, Old Folks At Home, Cindy
