Taylor Festival Choir : This Is Thy Hour O Soul

Review: In our contemporary, frenetic society, the innate spirituality of our common existence is all-too-often overlooked. This is Thy Hour, O Soulfocuses on that spirituality with modern musical settings of texts both contemporary and ancient, Western and Eastern, sacred and secular, theological and philosophical. Called by critic Lindsay Koob a "rising star in the national choral scene," Taylor's choirs have been described as sounding "more musical than would seem possible," (Charleston Post and Courier) and have received numerous plaudits from critics and choral specialists for their technical proficiency, musicalty and beautiful sound production.

Songlist: On Meditation, A Clear Midnight, Magnificat, Nunc dimittis, The Last Invocation, The Unknown Region, To All, To Each, Festival Te Deum, Sing Ye Praises to Our King, Salmo 150, Water Night, Cloudburst, Prayer to the Father of Heaven, Ave Maria

The Choral Project : Of Christmastide

Review: Though founded only in 1996 by Artistic Director Daniel Hughes, this ensemble of thirty voices has already begun to distinguish itself with an eclectic program. As part of their mission, the group seeks to unify diverse peoples, and the track list for "Of Christmastide" reflects this concern. Weighted somewhat towards the 20th century, with Williams, Tavener, Rutter, Holst and Lauridsen amongst the composers represented, the balance includes two Latvian carols, James McKelvey's arrangement of "Deck The Hall in 7/8" and the Nigerian "Betelehemu." Their sonority is broad and expansive, with an airy and open delivery. Some percussion and woodwinds on a few tracks.

Songlist: Hodie Christus natus est, Terly Terlow, Personent Hodie, Sweet Was the Song, Two Latvian Carols, THe Boar's Head Carol, Eso rigor e repente, Three Kings of Orient, Salvation Is Created, Carol From an Irish Cabin, A La Nanita Nana, Deck the Hall (in 7/8), O Magnum Mysterium, Wassil Song, Lo, How a Rose e're Blooming, Betelehemu, Silent Night

The Choral Project : One is the All

Review: Founded by Daniel Hughes in 1996, the 46-strong, mixed-voice Choral Project has gained an excellent reputation for performing high-level choral literature in concerts, interfaith services and choral festivals and invitationals in Northern California and across the country. This is the San Jose, CA-based ensemble's 5th CD, including the critically acclaimed "Water and Light," featuring the music of Eric Whitacre. 17 songs, beginning with Stephen Swartz' soaring "Keramos" and the Ward Swingle-arranged "De Puta y Taco," "One is the All" impressively progresses through a varied and eclectic songlist. Roberto Valera's joyous "Quisiera," the brooding, dissonant "War Song," the lovely "So we'll go no more a roving," Charles Stanford's soaring "The Bluebird," Harry Belafonte's dynamic "Turn the World Around," Joan Szymcko's "It Takes A Village," Jaako Mantyjarvi's spirited "El Hambo," and Joshua Shank's dramatic "Musica animam tangens" are favorites. The poise and vocal maturity of the ensemble, a beautifully arranged and selected songlist and strong direction by Hughes add up to another very special CD from the Choral Project!

Songlist: Keramos , De Punta y Taco , Dieu! Qu'il La Fait Bon Regarder! , Quisiera , War Song , So We'll Go No More A-roving , Come To Me My Love, The Bluebird , Fair & True , Turn The World Around, It Takes A Village , The Garten Mother's Lullaby , El Hambo , Famine Song , Let Evening Come , Musica Animam Tangens , Ubi Caritas

Their vision is "To heal our world through music and words;" their mission "to connect one another through choral theater, education and musical excellence." Review: The 45-voice ensemble Choral Project under the direction of David Hughes is rapidly developing a solid reputation for choral excellence and this release of Christmas music and songs inspired by the season is a delight. The recording includes the first commercial release of Eric Whitacre's composition "Winter" which makes for fascinating listen along with works by Avro Part, Jester Hairston and David Maddux. Theatre of Voices : Arvo Part - A Tribute

Review: In celebration of composer Arvo Part's 70th birthday on September 11th, Harmonia Mundi offers this special selection of recordings, conducted by his long-time collaborator and biographer Paul Hillier. Of special note is the first release of Hillier's reading of Dopo la vittoria. Previously released recordings are taken from Hillier's two highly acclaimed recordings of the music of Arvo Part. His first CD, De Profundis, has remained a bestseller since its debut in March 1997. I Am The True Vine, his second Part disc, illustrated Hillier's unique affinity for the deep spiritual mysteries of Part's music, and his ability to illuminate them in ways no other performer can match. The collaborative relationship between Hillier and Estonian composer Part dates back to the early 1980s, when as director of the Hilliard Ensemble, he was among the first to present Part's music to the West.

Songlist: Dopo La Vittoria, The Woman With The Alabaster Box, Berliner Messe, Kyrie, Gloria, First Alleluia Verse, Second Alleluia Verse, Veni Sancte Spiritus, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei , Solfeggio, Magnificat, Bogoroditese Djevo, I Am The True Wine, Which Was The Son Of...

Theatre of Voices : Arvo Part - De Profundis

Review: Marx and Lenin probably would not have appreciated the irony, but after decades of Communist repression of religion, the former Soviet bloc is the source of a profound outpouring of explicitly Christian expression. This is manifested in the music of such composers as Henryk Gorecki, a Pole, and Arvo Part, an Estonian. Part, a refugee from serialism, here writes in a quasi-minimalist style that he calls "tintinnabuli," a sound that echoes medieval composition. A fan of vocal music ("The human voice is the most perfect instrument of all"), he uses choruses to superb effect. This disc includes some of his best work, including the popular Magnificat, beautifully rendered by the Theatre of Voices under Paul Hillier.

Songlist: De Profundis, Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei , Ite Misse Est, Solfeggio, And One Of Those Pharisees, Cantate Domino, Summa, O Weisheit, O Adonai, O Spross, O Schlussel, O Morgenstern, O Konig, O Immanuel, The Beatitudes, Magnificat

Theatre of Voices : Part - I Am The True Vine

Review: Contemporary troubador Paul Hillier has been one of the key players behind introducing Arvo Part's music to Western audiences, first through recordings with the Hilliard Ensemble and later through his magnificently innovative group Theatre of Voices. I Am the True Vine continues the collaboration by bringing together some truly vintage Part compositions from the '90s. Although it exists on disc in a more elaborate version for choir and strings, the 1990 Berlin Mass was originally written for just four solo voices and organ. Part later revised the score, returning to that original sonority, which is the version offered here. The consummate preparation of the Theatre of Voices, in which every line is lovingly unfurled, the whole building into a memorable aural sculpture, only heightens a listener's admiration for Part's ability to make the seemingly simple profound. We also hear the composer in a more overtly joyful mood than usual in the short first selection, while the title track--a setting of a text from the Gospel of John and one of three world premiere recordings here--is a marvelously organic example of word painting (representing Part's choral virtuosity even when it comes to setting English text).

Songlist: Bogoroditse dyevo (Hail Mary), I Am the True Vine, Kanon Pokajanen, The Woman with the Alabaster Box, Tribute to Caesar, Berliner Messe

Theatre of Voices : The Little Match Girl Passion

Review: Co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall especially for Paul Hillier and Theatre of Voices, David Lang's The Little Match Girl Passion was awarded the 2008 Pulitzer Prize in Music. Setting Hans Christian Andersen's fable in the format of Bach's St Matthew Passion, Lang elevates the suffering of the little match girl with poignant, evocative music. Lang's piece is scored for four voices and a few percussion instruments, played by the singers. They sing the sad story of a little girl who freezes to death selling matches on the street during a cold winter's night. In notes Lang wrote to accompany the Carnegie Hall premiere last October, he says he was drawn to Andersen's story because of how opposite aspects of the plot played off each other. "The girl's bitter present is locked together with the sweetness of her past memories," Lang says. "Her poverty is always suffused with her hopefulness. There's a kind of na•ve equilibrium between suffering and hope."

Songlist: Come, Daughter, It Was Terribly Cold, Dearest Heart, In an Old Apron, Penance, Patience!, Ah! Perhaps, Have Mercy, My God, She Lighted Another Match, From the Sixth Hour, She Again Rubbed a Match, When it is Time For Me to Go, In the Dawn of Morning, We Sit and Cry, For Love is Strong, I Lie, Evening Morning Day, Again (After Ecclesiastes)

Toby Twining Music : Chrysalid Requiem

Review: Following his acclaimed first release "Shaman," "Chrysalid" is NYC-based Twining's most in-depth composition to date and probably his greatest. Moving beyond the mysticism of Tavener and Arvo Part, this is a fresh, passionate and deeply personal hour-long a cappella work that draws on one of the West's most sacred traditions. The requiem is in 12 parts: "Introit," "Kyrie," "Gradual & Tract," "Sequence 1," "Sequence 2," "Sequence 3," "Offertory," "Sanctus," "Agnus Dei," "Communion," "Responsory" and "Antiphon." The innovative Twining, having assembled some of the world's most versatile singers for the recording, combines pure, unadorned singing with intricate hocketing, overtone chanting, and vocal traditions from around the world. Since the mid-1980s Twining has been experimentally, first with his own voice and then with his own a cappella group, pushing the choral envelope. The results, first on "Shaman" and now on "Chrysalid Requiem," have been at once radiant, unconventionally beautiful and attention-getting. Twining has stepped outside the box and is inviting us to join him!

Songlist: Introit, Kyrie, Gradual, Sequence 1, Sequence 11, Sequence 111, Offertory, Sanctus, Agnus Dei

Tudor Choir : An American Christmas - Shapenote Carols from New England and Appalachia

Review: The 17 mixed voices of Seattle's Tudor Choir, founded by Doug Fullington in 1993, have a focused repertoire dedicated to historically informed concerts and recordings with an emphasis on Renaissance, early American and English choral music. While putting together 1996's "The Shapenote Album," the Choir came across "An American Christmas Harp," a shapenote collection, and were inspired to record "An American Christmas. We won't go into defining shapenote, referring you to the 28-page liner notes, but we will say that it's intensely harmonic and spirited, and often includes fugues. 23 songs, some of which we know by other names, "Antioch," for instance, we know as "Joy to the World." Some favorites: "Shiloh," "Sherburne," "Emanuel, For Christmas," "Redemption, S.M.," "Anthem from Luke," "Joys Seven," "Boston, For Christmas," "Bonnie Doon," "Judea," "London," "Raymond" and "Milford." These now obscure songs were once as familiar to rural Americans as "White Christmas." Shapenote is joyous, celebratory music, fun to sing and fun to hear.

Songlist: Shepherd's Star, Shiloh, The Cherry Tree, Antioch, Sherburne, Emanuel for Christmas, Redemption S.M., Anthem for Luke, Joys Seven, Bethlehem C.M, Redemption L.M., Boston for Christmas, Bonnie Doon, Star in the East, Oxford, Judea, New Bethlehem, London, I Saw Three Ships, Raymond, Convoy, Distress, Milford

Tudor Choir : Gentle Words: Shaker Songs

Review: The Seattle-based Tudor Choir is a professional mixed-voice choir with a flexible membership between 10 and 30 singers, founded by director Doug Fullington in 1993. They specialize in Renaissance polyphony and also sings Baroque, early American and 20th century music. "Gentle Words" is their 3rd CD. The Shakers (or United Society of Believers) originated in England in 1747. In 1770 the charismatic Ann Lee became the acknowledged leader, she and 8 others departed for America in 1774 to escape persecution. Their animated and ecstatic worship practices gave rise to their common name. The societies they formed are characterized by pacifism, gender/racial equality and an astounding industriousness and invention. These songs are part of a body of 10,000 Shaker songs. There are 28 a cappella tunes here, all following the Shaker aesthetics of beauty, simplicity and utility. "I will bow and be simple," "In Yonder Valley," "All is summer," "Love is little," "The burning day," the triumphant "Circular march," "Heavenly display," the foot-stomping "Followers of the Lamb," the joyous "Angels of heaven," "Dismission of Great I," "Gentle words," "Beautiful Valley," "Jubilee," "Cords of love" ... There is a quiet beauty and power to these songs--no wonder the Shakers have outlived all other utopian religious groups. Spirited, spiritual music sung beautifully!

Songlist: I will bow and be simple, In yonder valley, All is summer, O Lord make me pure, Love is little, The burning day, Circular march, Help me, O Lord, Heavenly display, Followers of the lamb, Come to Zion, We must be meek, Lay me low, Solemn song, Beautiful treasure, Peace, Angels of heaven, Hunger and thirst, Dismission of Great I, Revelation, Prayer for the captive, Gentle words, Beautiful valley, Jubilee, Exekiel's vision, Almighty Savior , Cords of love, I will go on my way

Tudor Choir : Requiem & Motets - Jacob Clemens non Papa

Review: The Tudor Choir adds to its critically acclaimed collection of recordings with this new CD of music by Renaissance composer Jacob Clemens non Papa (c.1515-c.1555). Clemens composed in all of the expected genres of his time. Much of his music is infused with a personal quality that differs from the generally abstract nature of much Renaissance sacred music. The music on this disc is a survey of his Latin-texted sacred polyphony, including his intimate Requiem, plus a Magnificat setting and a sampling of motets. The pieces chosen for this recording reveal texts that portray such themes as relationships, family, and remembrance and therefore demonstrate the unusual personal quality to be found in Clemens s works.

Songlist: Ecce quam bonum, Deus qui nos patrem et matrem, Requiem, Requiem aeternam, Kyrie, Absolve Domine, Offertory, Domine Jesu Christe, Sanctus and Benedictus, Agnus Dei , Communion: Lux aeterna, Continuo lacrimas, Magnificat quarti toni, Ego me diligentes diligo, Misit me pater vivens, Pater peccavi, Cum esset

Tuskegee Institute Choir - William Dawson : Spirituals

Review: The Tuskegee (Alabama) Institute Choir, whose first singers were organized by school founder Booker T. Washington, is steeped in more than a century of pride and the richest of choral traditions. Booker insisted on the singing of African American spirituals by everyone at the weekly chapel worship services, a tradition that continues today. The Choir's most renowned director, composer and education William L. Dawson led the Choir into a new era in 1932, with their appearance at the opening of Radio City Music Hall in NYC, which would lead to performances before Presidents, radio and television audiences and worldwide prestige. There are 15 spirituals here, with innovative arrangements, powerful harmonies and solos; all sung with deep feeling and spirit. UCLA Madrigal Singers : Choral Music Of 20th Century Americans

Review: The 23 mixed voices of the UCLA Madrigal Singers was directed by Donn Weiss for 25 years. In addition to regular tours throughout the Western US and Canada, the group has traveled to Australia and Hawaii, and provided vocal music for Hollywood films like "Tron." "Choral Music" is a varied collection of 23 works by 20th century American composers. Some favorites are the 4 movements of Daniel Pinkham's "Wedding Cantata," Halsey Stevens' "The Amphisbaena," the Weiss-arranged spiritual "Mumblin' Word," Williametta Spenser's moody "These Are the Days When Birds Come Back," Samuel Barber's 3-part "Reincarnations," the Anglo-American Ballad "Barbara Allen," "Spring," by Kirk Mechem, two "Selections from Dickinson Madrigals" by Roger Bourland, and two by Aaron Copland, "The Promise of Living" and "Stomp Your Foot." These are some rarely-heard, lovely, eclectic pieces by American composers, sung by a talented mixed-voice student ensemble. Some light accompaniment. Extensive liner notes with all the lyrics.

Songlist: Wedding Cantata (Daniel Pinkham):, - Rise Up, My Love, - Many Waters, - Awake! O North Wind, - Epilogue: Set Me As A Seal, A Slumber Did My Spirit Seal (Paul Chihara), The Amphisbaena (Halsey Stevens), Like as the Culver on the Bared Bough (Halsey Stevens), Mumblin' Word (Spiritual, arr. Donn Weiss), Best of Rooms - Randall Thompson, These Are the Days When the Birds Come Back (Williametta Spencer), Reincarnations (Samuel Barber):, - Mary Hynes, - Anthony O'Daly, - The Coolin, Barbara Allen (Anglo-American Ballas, arr. UCLA Madrigal Singers : Hark, How The Bells

Review: The UCLA Madrigal Singers, the 22 member mixed-voice premiere chamber choir led by director/arranger Donn Weiss, brings us this "best-of" holiday album, which represents nearly 25 years of audience favorites, the best-loved Christmas songs heard at Royce Hall and at their traditional Twelfth Night concerts. We of course enjoy standards like "Angels We Have Heard on High," "Deck the Hall," "O Holy Night" and "Stille Nacht," but we particularly like more obscure music like Catherine Bennett's "Christ Child Carol," Benjamin Britten's "Christ Child Carol," the Scottish Carol "Balloo Lammy," Herbert Howells' "A Spotless Rose," the Spanish "Carol of the Birds," Daniel Pinkham's "Come Love We God," the Austrian carol "Still, Still, Still," and the Puerto Rican folksong "De Tierra Legana Venimos." The full, rich sound of the Singers makes "Bells" ring out as a very special and varied Christmas collection. Occasional light accompaniment.

Songlist: Angels We Have Heard on High, Deck the Hall, Christ Child Carol, A Boy Was Born, Baloo Lammy, Flemish Carol, A Spotless Rose, Joy to the World, In the Bleak Midwinter, Carol of the Birds, Come, Love We God, Still, Still, Still, Bring a Torch, Jeannette, Isabella, Carol of the Bells, De Tierra Lejana Venimos, O Holy Night, Love Came Down at Christmas, Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence, Pat-a-pan, A Christmas, Estampie Natalis, Stille Nacht

University of Louisville Cardinal Singers : A Time To Cherish

Review: "A Time to Cherish is a lovely a cappella Christmas collection from The University of Louisville (KY), Cardinal Singers, which was founded in 1970. The 45-strong, mixed-voice ensemble has gained a reputation for excellence under Dr. Hatteburg, from International competitions in Europe, symposiums in Japan, to ACDA Conventions in the US. There are 22 finely-crafted songs here, from traditional carols like "Ding Dong! Merrily on High," "Carol of the Bells," "Angels from the Realms of Glory," "Away in a Manger," "I Saw Three Ships," "Coventry Carol," "Deck the Hall" and "Joy to the World" to less familiar material, Herbert Howells' "A Spotless Rose," Arvo Part's "Bogoroditse Djevo," Elizabeth Poston's "Jesus Christ the Apple Tree," Juris Vaivods' Ti Divam Duorgi Laiki," Frank Martin's "Sanctus," Ralph Vauhan Williams' "The Blessed Son," and the Paul Brandvik-arranged "Lulajze, Jezuniu."

Songlist: Ding Dong! Merrily On High, Ave Maria (2005), Weihnachten, op. 79 no. 1, The Infant King, Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day, A Spotless Rose, Bogoroditse Djevo, O Magnnum Mysterium, Jesus Christ the Apple Tree, Carol of the Bells, Angels, From the Realms of Glory, Away In A Manger, Ti Divam Duorgi Laiki, I Saw Three Ships, Ave Maria (1996), Sanctus, The Blessed Son, Coventry Carol, Rocking, Dack the Halls, Lulajze, Jezuniu, Joy to the World

University of Miami Chorale : Love Of My Soul

Review: This is a lovely program by the University of Miami Chorale. Led by Jo-Michael Scheibe the choir explores sacred and secular love. The program begins with O vos omnes by Victoria and an Ave Maria by Steven Edwards. Scheibe puts a spin on the Mass. In an Eclectic Missa Brevis he pairs two movements from Byrd's Mass for Four Voices with two movements from the Messe by Frank Martin. Some interesting pieces are the five Hebrew love songs by Eric Whitacre. They are set to poetry by Hila Plitman and accompanied by string quartet. This CD is a nice mixture of styles and is well sung.

Songlist: O vos omnes, Ave Maria, An Eclectic Missa Brevis:, - Kyrie (from the Mass for Four Voices), Gloria (from the Messe), Sanctus (from the Messe), Agnus Dei (from the Mass for Four Voices), Five Hebrew Love Songs:, - Temuna, - Kala kalla, - Larov, - Eyze Sheleg!, - Rakut, Selections from Neue Liebeslieder, op. 65, - Verzicht, o Herz, auf Retung, - Finstere Schatten der Nacht, - Ihr schwarzen Augen, ihr durft nur winken, - Rosen steckt mir an die mutter, - Vom Gebirge Well' auf Well', - Weiche Graser im Revier, - Nagen am Herzen, - Alles, alles in den Wind, - Schwarzer Walk, dein Schatten, - Nein, Geliebter, setze dich mir, - Flammenauge, dunkles Haar, - Zum Schluss: Nun, ihr Musen, genug!, Las Agachadas, Dear Sarah, The Gartan Mother's Lullaby, Two Rose Songs:, - The Lovely Rose, - Go Lovely Rose, Amor de me Alma

Review: University of New Mexico Music Professor Brad Ellingboe and the UNM Concert Choir releases "Fast Falls the Eventide," a collection of sacred and familiar songs as well as pieces specially written and arranged for the choir including, "O Esca Viatorum," a 17th century hymn. Ellingboe's original piece, "Be Music, Night," is featured. Voice faculty Jaccqueline Zander-Wall, a mezzo soprano, is featured in the classic, "What a Wonderful World." "The name of the CD comes from the second line in the song 'Abide with Me.' The CD is comprised of gentle music about evening, music and the night. The more hidden meaning is 'abide with me,' or come with me to listen to the UNM choirs," Ellingboe said.

University of Texas Chamber Singers : American Choral Music

Review: This anthology brings together representative works from the mainstream of contemporary American choral music. Charles Ives's Psalm 90 evokes a mood reminiscent of congregational Sunday singing in New England. Copland's In the Beginning recalls his Fanfare for the Common Man, while Lukas Foss's Behold, I Build An House shows the stylistic influence of Copland. Vincent Persichetti's Flower Songs reveal his deep commitment to his favourite poet E.E. Cummings, and favours the women's voices. In Fern Hill, set for alto, chorus and orchestra, composer John Corigliano sings of the joys of youth.

Songlist: Flower Songs, Psalm 90, Fern Hill, Behold, I Build An House, In The Beginning

US Navy Sea Chanters : Songs of Sailor and Sea

Review: The Sea Chanters is a 17 voice chorus of the United States Navy Band who perform a wide variety of choral music from classical to Broadway musicals. Part of their repertoire which is often requested are sea chanties and songs of the sea. Originally they were organized in 1956 as an all male chorus. Female voices were added in 1980. Under the direction of Master Chief Musician Chuck Yates, the Sea Chanties perform throughout the United States. When they are in Washington they often perform at the White House and for endless notable special events, performing with the National Symphony Orchestra, at President Nixon's funeral, at Carnegie Hall, aboard the U.S.S. Constitution in Boston Harbor, and at the 4th of July Celebrations at the Washington Monument, to name a few venues. The recording begins with a traditional sound as we are presented with the well known chanty, "From Boston Harbor." Then there are six songs with piano accompaniment from the collection of nautical themes by Eric H. Thiman. "Waternight" was written by Eric Whitacre for the Dale Warland Singers using text from Octavio Paz. You will be serenaded by four of the five "English Folk Songs" arranged by R. Vaughn Williams, a Percy Grainger arrangement, songs based on the work of Robert Frost, and finally "A Prayer for the Fleet" which was written the 40th anniversary performance of the Sea Chanties. This selection of music is as beautifully sung. Go Navy!
