Seattle Children's Chorus : Seasons of Song

Review: Founded in 1989 by artistic director Kris Mason, the Seattle Children's Chorus brings us the choral sounds of 200 boys and girls, in four levels of choirs, raised in song. "Seasons of Song" is a wonderful holiday collection of 22 songs from the SCC's most beautiful live performances, many of them lightly piano and flute accompanied. The voices of the beginning younger children (Brio) shine on tunes such as "All That Is Good," "Une Poule Blanche" and Colligan's "Now I Walk In Beauty." The intermediate chorus, Intermezzo, shows their stuff on Nalan's "Al Shlosha D'Varim," Chilcott's "Sing You Now" and "Bring a Torch, Jeanette Isabella;" and the advanced groups, Arioso and Camerata, easily handle more difficult, eclectic pieces like Pfautsch's "Consecrate the Place and Day," "Kyrie-Sanctus Benedictus from Mass No. 6" by Orban, the joyous a cappella "Sithi Jabula" by Nyberg, Nordqvist's "Wonderful Peace," Fissinger's "Make We Joy," Whitacre's "Lux Arumque" and Bach's "Prepare to Receive Him." These pieces are intermixed with more standard carols like "Ding Dong! Merrily on High," "Deck The Halls" and "The Little Drummer Boy" like treats in a holiday basket. "Seasons of Song" is a beautiful gift of sweet voices!

Songlist: Consecrate The Place And Day, Kyrie-Sanctus-Benedictus From Mass no. 6, All That Is Good, Sithi Jabula, Les Berceaux, Dirait-on, Une Poule Blanche, Colorado Trail, Al Shlosha D'varim, Now I Walk In Beauty, Sing You Now, Wonderful Peace, Make We Joy, Prepare to Recieve Him, Christmastide, Kling, Glockchen Kling!, Deck The Halls, Bring A Torch, Jeanette Isabella, Ding Dong! Merrily on High, The Little Drummer Boy, Lux Arumque, Sunny Bank

Seattle Children's Chorus : Songs From the Heart

Review: The Seattle Children's Chorus was founded in 1988 by artistic director Kris Mason; whose purpose was to promote a high level of vocal and choral training for young musicians in the Seattle area. The approximately 175 choristers perform formal concerts throughout the year, and the Performing Chorus has toured annually throughout the Northwest, Canada and the West Coast. Other tours have taken them to Britain, and they have appeared at Carnegie Hall. These 21 songs mostly feature the Performing Chorus, with the exception of "The Little Birch Tree," "Simple Gifts" and "This Old Man," which features the Advanced Ensemble, who also sing "All That Hath Life and Breath Praise Ye the Lord." Some other favorites are "Festival Sanctus," "Bist du bei mir," "The Father's Love," "Who Can Sail," "Jabberwocky," the poignant "In Flanders Fields," "Psalm 100," "Agnus Dei," "Dance With Me," "Kalinka" and "The Rhythm of Life." There is light piano accompaniment on most tunes, but the soaring, innocent voices of the children are what "Songs from the Heart" is all about. Beautiful and moving, from first cut to the last!

Songlist: Festival Sanctus, Over My Head, Bist du bei mir, Duet From Cantata #15, The Father's Love, Who Can Sail, Jabberwocky, In Flanders Fields, Cantate Domino, The Little Birch Tree, Simple Gifts, This Old Man, Jesus Christ, the Apple Tree, All That Hath Life and Breath Praise Ye the Lord, Psalm 100, Art Thou Troubled, Agnus Dei, Dance With Me, Kalinka, The Storm is Passing Over, The Rhythm of Life

Review: 200 young voices raised in harmony, committed to musical excellence in rehearsals, performances, at festivals and on tour all over the globe-this is what the SCC is all about. "Voices" is a best-of Christmas collection of 20 songs, recorded from 2001 to 2004, by the elite smaller groups within the Chorus, Arioso, Intermezza, Camerata, and the combined Choruses. Favorites, hard to pick, are the sweet "Petit Enfant" and the lilting "Noel Nouvelet" by Arioso, "Ho Ro Ho Ro," "Arise Now, You Shepherds" and "Christmas Time is Here" by Intermezzo, Camerata's "O Magnum Mysterium," "Betelehemu" and the nice medley "Christmas Pudding," and "The Lamb" and "Hodie Christus Natus Est" by the combined Choirs. There is something wonderfully right and appropriate about a talented children's choir singing classic Christmas music! All tracks are lightly accompanied.

Seattle Girls' Choir : Cantate 2000

Review: "Cantate 2000" is the third CD done by the SGC with Jackson Berkey, a talented composer and pianist, who also contributed beautiful digital photography and art direction to the stunning liner notes. There are 11 songs in three groupings, "Cantate 2000," "Prime Voci A Cappella" (the two unaccompanied songs on the CD), and "Voices From the Earth." All are impressive on many levels. The two very interesting written pieces in the liner notes by Berkey and Wright add to our appreciation for the music.

Songlist: Cantate 2000, The Cat's Meows, Resonet in Lauibus, Interlude, Super Flumina Babylonis, Terra Aliena, Cantate Domino, Prime Voci A Cappella, Ave dulcimissa Maria, Ascendit Deus, Voices from the Earth, Evening, Blindergarten, Autumn Comes To Woman, In A French Mountain Village

Seattle Girls' Choir : Meets Jackson Berkey

Review: Composer Jackson Berkey was in San Antonio in 1993 at the National Convention for the American Choral Directors Association when he was blown away by the sound of the Seattle Girls' Choir. He was inspired to create a treble arrangement for one of his new pieces, "God Be In My Head," sent it to director Jerome Wright, and a beautiful relationship began. "God Be In My Head" is the only a cappella tune on the CD, the other 14 are beautifully accompanied by a variety of instruments, from harp and piano to string orchestra, handbells, synthesizer and whip snap. Included are 2 excellent suites by Berkey, "South Dakota Shadows Suite," 4 songs; and "Thoughts and Remembrances," also 4 songs. The girls in the chorus (25 are listed in the liner notes, but over 60 on their first CD) are indeed cause for Mr. Berkey's enthusiasm-this is CD is beautiful and impressive. The liner notes are first class and extensive.

Songlist: Gloria in excelsis Deo!, God Be in My Head, South Dakota Shadows Suite, Indian Summer, Evening Shadows, Boxing with Snowflakes, Requiem for a Pioneer Woman, Sacramento Sis-Joe, Little Fire, Song of Solomon, Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus, Still, Still Night, Thoughts and Remembrances, Isaiah, View Me, Lord, A Work of Thine, 6Pence, Balm in Gilead

Seattle Girls' Choir : Mosaic

Review: Seattle is well-known for the vibrancy of its homegrown music. Seattle Girls' Choir's newest CD, 'Mosaic' adds to the richness of the region's musical heritage. 'Mosaic' blends sacred and secular pieces sung in the soaring treble choral style for which the choir is famous. The CD has been released in honor of the 25th anniversary of the Seattle Girls' Choir. 'Mosaic' is a compilation of the choir's all-time favorite classical vocal music that has been sung on tours and at music festivals spanning the United States to some of the great cathedrals of Europe. Some great sacred pieces included are 'Rise Up, My Love, My Fair One,' 'The Song of Solomon,' and the always stirring double choir 'Ave Maria,' by Gustav Holst. Memorable secular pieces included are 'Vier Gesange' by Brahms and Randall Thompson's moving 'Choose Something Like a Star.' Also, another fine recording included is Jackson Berkey's 'Nunc Dimittis.' Berkey's outstanding treble music served as the inspiration for two previous Seattle Girls' Choir CDs. This is an excellent collection of music, for anyone who appreciates beautiful treble choir music!

Songlist: The Pelican, Ave Verum , Zapad Slunce , Suscepit Israel , Wie Lieblich Sind Deine Wohnungen , Ave Maria , Laudi Alla Vergine Maria, Bow Down Thine Ear , Rise Up My Love My Fair One, Nunc Dimittis, Vier Gesange, Suo Gan, Choose Something Like A Star

Seattle Pro Musica : Rachmaninov

Review: From 1880 to 1917 was a renaissance in Russian choral music, a great outpouring of sacred compositions by major composers such as Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Chesnokov and Kastalsky. While Sergei Rachmaninov (1873-1943) only wrote a few choral works, they are among the crowning achievements of Russian choral music. "Vsenoshchnoye Bdeniye Op. 37 (Vespers)" encompasses a wealth of moods and emotion, ranging from meditative introspection to praise and proclamation. The 76-strong, award-winning Seattle Pro Musica is the perfect ensemble for this material, dramatically powerful on a piece like "Priidite, poklonimsya," (Come Let Us Worship), sweetly meditative on songs like "Blagoslovi, dushe moya, Gospoda" and "Shestopsalmiye: Slava v vyshnikh bogu" (The Six Psalms: Glory Be to God in the Highest), filled with wonder on "Tropar: Dnes spasneniye" (The Troparion: Thou didst Rise from the Tomb), and joyfully triumphant on "Vzbrannoy voyevode" (To Thee, the Victorious Leader). Truly wonderful, rarely-heard sacred music from one of great composers of all time.

Songlist: Priidite, polonimsya (Come, Let Us Worship), Blagoslovi, dushe moya, Gospoda (Bless the Lord, O My Soul), Blazhen muzh (Blessed is the Man), Svete tikhyi (Gladsome Light), Nyne otpushchayeshi (Lord, Now Lettest Thou Thy Servant Depart), Bogoroditse Devo (Rejoice, O Virgin), Shestopsalmiye: Slava v vyshnikh Bogu (The Six Psalms: Glory to God in the Highest), Khvalite imya Gospodne (Praise the Name of the Lord), Blagosloven yesi, Gospodi (Blessed Art Thou, O Lord), Voskreseniye Khristovo videvshe (Having Beheld the Resurrection of Christ), Velichit dusha moya Gospoda (My Soul Magnifies the Lord), Slavosloviye velikoye (The Great Doxology: Glory to God in the Highest, Tropar: Dnes spaseniye (The Troparion: Today Salvation Has Come), Tropar: Voskres iz groba (The Troparion: Thou didst Rise from the Tomb), Vzbrannoy voyevode (To Thee, the Victorious leader)

Sistrum : Dancing Naked at the Edge of Dawn

Review: Lansing, MI's award-winning, 30-strong women's chorus Sistrum's vision is "to provide a musical haven where women may find their voices and enjoy the camaraderie offered by the Sistrum community." They further endeavor "to create a choral instrument by which our members can use their voices to raise beautiful music and powerful energy." This CD was inspired by Sistrum's first commissioned work, the 3-part "Dancing Naked at the Edge of Dawn," with words by Kris Radish and music by Jenni Brandon. There are 15 songs here, a World tour, if you will, beginning with the piano-accompanied French tune "Ah! Si mon moine voulait danser," a lighthearted piece about a girl trying to get a monk to dance with her by bribing him with material possessions; two chants; with roots in the Celtic pagan culture, "Full Moonlight Dance" and "Everything She Touches;" "Koowu" is directly translated as "strength" and incorporates Middle Eastern scales; Stephen Hatfield's "Camino Caminante" is inspired by the swirling mix of cultures in Miami; and the lightly percussioned, Tamil-based "Odi Odi" urges us to look internally for inspiration and empowerment. Randi Driscoll's powerful "What Matters," the traditional Spiritual "Balm in Gilead," Harold Arlen's "Over the Rainbow," the 3-part, piano-accompanied title tune, and "Still I Rise," an ode to survival regardless of the challenge or obstacle, complete our list of favorites. "Dancing" is a beautiful, inspirational collection from talented Sistrum!

Si mon moine voulait danser, Full Moonlight Dance , Everything She Touches, Koowu , My Love Walks in Velvet, Both Page and Pen, Camino Caminante, Odi Odi , What Matters , Balm in Gilead , Over the Rainbow , The Dark Line , Morning Prayer, Dancing Naked at the Edge of Dawn , Still I Rise

Sound Circle : Sound Circle

Review: Twenty-one women gather to experience the joy of making music together and to share that joy with their audiences, performing songs in a multiplicity of styles (with elements of classical, world and folk, though strictly speaking, Sound Circle is none of these). Featuring composers such as Ysaye Maria Barnwell and Holly Near (but also original works commissioned specifically for the group), the ensemble has fashioned a full-spectrum, transparently textured recording that can be minimalist or celebratory in turn, though always congruent in its musicality. Artistic Director Sue Coffee's staunch credentials ensure Sound Circle's unmistakable grounding in the traditions of Western harmony, while providing the setting for the group's highly personal expression.

Southern California Children's Chorus : Simple Gifts

Review: The Concert Chorus of the Southern California Children's Chorus gives a very joyous performance. Simple Gifts contains mostly sacred pieces for treble voices. Southern California Children's Chorus : Simple Gifts (Holiday Concert)

Review: The SCCC, founded by artistic director Lori Loftus, involves 200 choristers in a sequential choral program consisting of 6 choirs. The 65 mixed-voice Concert Chorus, under Lori's leadership, is rapidly becoming the leading children's chorus in Southern California. 21 songs, the first 11, all arranged by Lori, are religious and sacred music, with the exception of the traditional title tune, arranged by Aaron Copeland. Banchieri's "Jubilate Deo," Praetorius' "Sing dem Herrn," Handel's "Art Thou Troubled," Zoltan Kodaly's "Psalm 150," James McCray's "Kyrie," and Rene Clausen's joyous "Psalm 100" are favorites in this group. The traditional Hebrew song "S'Vivon," the upbeat folk tune "Niska Banja," Leonard Bernstein's "One Hand, One Heart," Walter Hawkins' "I'm Goin' Up a Yonder," the spiritual "Go Where I Send Thee!," and the traditional "May the Road Rise Up to Meet You" are other favorites. Piano accompaniment on some songs. Excellent song selection and the spirited harmonies of talented youthful choristers-"Simple" is truly a gift!

Spivey Hall Children's Choir : Homeland

Review: Dr. Martha Shaw is the founding director of the 47-strong Spivey Hall Children's Choir. Under her direction, the choir, noted for its artistry and mature vocal sound, has been featured in performances at regional, state and national conferences of the American Choral Directors Association. Accompanied on piano by assistant director Judy Kerlin Mason, "Homeland" is presented as "a collection of music featuring works of contemporary composers of the Americas." Some of our favorites are David Brunner's "Jubilate Deo" and "The World is Full of Poetry" from Earthsongs, Francisco Nunez' "Gloria" and "Credo" from Misa Pequena, Ron Nelson's "Ask the Moon," and the familiar "Shenandoah," "The Turtle Dove," "Georgia on My Mind," "Amazing Grace" and "May the Road Rise to Meet You," but every track is wonderful. All songs are accompanied by piano, organ and/or a variety of woodwinds, horns and percussion. Let the soaring voices of SHCC lift your spirits and calm your soul.

Songlist: Jubilate Deo, The World is Full of Poetry from Earthsongs, Gloria from Misa Pequena, Credo from Misa Pequena, Day Break, Salve Regina, Ask the Moon from Three Settings of the Moon, Shenandoah, Homeland, The Star, Think On These Things, Song for the Mira, The Turtle Dove, Three Ways To Vacuum Your House -II, Over the Rainbow, Life Has Loveliness to Sell, Inscription of Hope, Georgia On My Mind, Amazing Grace from Over the Hills, May the Road Rise to Meet You

St Charles Singers : Christmas In St Charles

Review: Proclaimed by classicaltoday.com to be "one of North America's outstanding choirs," the St. Charles Singers offer a bounty of Christmas music from Europe and America in arrangements by John Rutter, David Wilcocks and Robert Shaw and Alice Parker. It includes favorites such as "Angels We Have Heard on High," "Jingle Bells" and Rutter's charming "Donkey Carol." One of the less familiar pieces is a very lively setting by Arvo Part of the Slavonic Ave Maria, "Bogoroditse Djevo." Joining the choir on this CD are members of the Metropolis Chamber Orchestra and guitarist Goran Ivanovic. This is a wonderful collection for the Christmas season.

Songlist: Sans Day Carol, Away in a Manger, Nativity Carol, Quittez, Pasteurs, I Sing of a Maiden, Bogoroditse Djevo, I Wonder As I wander, Angels We have heard on High, For Unto Us a Child Is Born, While Stars Their Vigil Keep, Spanish Lullaby, Masters in This Hall, Christmas night, Little Road to Bethlehem, Donkey Carol, Jingle Bells, Ding Dong Merrily on High, El Noy de la Mare, Still, Still, Still

St Charles Singers : I Know Where I'm Going

Review: Rarely heard works by English composer/conductor John Rutter are highlighted on this highly acclaimed disc by the St. Charles Singers. Fancies is a cycle of choral settings with small orchestra which uses texts from the 15th and 16th centuries including Shakespeare and Thomas Campion. This performance is only the second recording of this charming piece. Other Rutter pieces include, "The Keel Row," "Black Sheep," "Down By the Sally Garden" and "I Know Where I'm Goin'." All of the Rutter arrangements are accompanied by soloists from the Metropolis Chamber Orchestra. The remainder of the recording is an assortment of American and British folk song arrangements. "Flower of Beauty," is especially beautiful. This recording includes some great singing from a fine American choir.

Songlist: Tell Me Where is Fancy Breed, There Is a Garden in Her Face, The Urchins' Dance, Riddle Song, Midnight's Bell, The Bellman's Song, Flower of Beauty, The Keel Row, The Turtle Dove, Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair, Lamorna, Black Sheep, Down By the Sally Gardens, He's Gone Away, Swansea Town, The Oak and The Ash , Early One Morning, I Know Where I'm Going, Londonderry Air, Shenandoah

St. Louis Children's Choir : Spring Concerts 2002

Review: The SLCC's mission is to provide children with a choral music experience that emphasizes musical excellence and character education. From simple beginnings in 1978, the program now includes about 500 1st through 12th graders from over 225 schools in the St. Louis, MO area. At the apex of the six progressive levels is the Concert Choir, which performs regularly with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and tours nationally and internationally under the direction of Barbara Berner, who also oversees all the Children's Choir programs. These 31 songs from the SLCC's annual Spring Concerts, most lightly accompanied, begin with 6 wonderful cuts by the Concert Choir, especially Mozart's "Love Duet" from The Magic Flute and a lovely solo on Bill Henderson's (heavily accompanied) "When I Sing." Then we have 3 very sweet live tunes by the Preparatory Choir, particularly "Mrs. Jenny Wren" and "All Night, All Day." Following are the Beginning Choir's "A Distant Shore," and "Orpheus with his Lute," the Intermediate Choir's version of Bob Chilcott's "Concrete" and "Streetseller" (from City Songs), the Choristers' "Oh Susanna" and "On the Sunny Side of the Street," and the Chamber Singers' "Hark, I Hear the Harps Eternal" and "For Spacious Skies." St. Marys Children's Choir : Winter Walk

Review: St. Marys Children's Choir & Festival Youth Singers was founded in St. Marys, Ontario in 1981 and since then, over 700 young people have participated in its training programs, winning many first places in Canadian Music Festivals Competitions. "Winter Walk" refers to a lovely evening stroll in "Stonetown," along the Thames River, Trout Creek and Little Falls, leading up to a Christmas display of lights in St. Marys' "The Flats." 23 lightly accompanied Christmas songs. Particularly nice (and new to our ears) to hear are songs written by Canadian composers: "What is this Lovely Fragrance" and "In Bethlehem Tonight" by Norman Nurmi," "Watts' Cradle Song" by Ruth Watson Henderson," "Tyrley, Tyrlow" and "I Heard the Bells" by Mark Sirett, and Eleanor Daley's "Rejoice and Sing this Christmas Morn." We also particularly liked the title tune, "Take a Winter Walk with Me" by Mary Donnelly, but there are many wonderful and rarely-heard tunes in this magical collection--that's a sure bet to put you in a Holiday mood, like an evening winter walk in Stonetown.

Songlist: Winter Sleighride, What Is This Lovely Fragrance , Let Us Dance And Sing , Wintersong , Watts' Cradle Song , Here's A Pretty Little Baby , Jesus Sleeping In The Manger , I'll Go To Bethlehem , Tyrley, Tyrley , I Heard The Bells , Joy Be Yours In The Morning , Come, Ye To Bethlehem , Brightest And Best , Baloo Lammy , Rejoice And Sing This Christmas Morn , I Hear The Bells , Behold That Star , In Bethlehem Tonight , How Far To Bethlehem , Take A Winter Walk With Me , Christmas Is A Feeling , Stars That Twinkle And Shine , We Need A Little Christmas

St. Olaf Choir : Charles Ives - The Celestial Country

Review: The Celestial Country was composed sometime before 1900, probably when Ives was organist at the fashionable First Presbyterian Church in Bloomfield, New Jersey, and it was scored for choir, strings and organ. This dramatic, symphonic work uses choruses, an a cappella chorus and instrumental interludes, and bold unresolved dissonances. Ives strives for a modern, more streamlined expression, though indulging in a Wagnerian finale, as much Wagner as he would ever display in a lifetime of composing. The veteran 75 mixed-voice St. Olaf Choir brings a fresh, immediate feel to this material, as if we are present for the first performance of this work in April, 1902 at Central Presbyterian Church in NYC. First we have the 12 movements of "Celestial Country," then 9 movements of "Silence Accompanied," written in the final years of Ives' creative life, the aftermath of WWI and the defeat of Wilson's plan for the League of Nations. St. Olaf Choir : Child Of Light Be Born In Us

Review: "Child of Light" is a 2 CD set recorded at the 93rd Annual St. Olaf Christmas Festival, performed in December of 2004 at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, and it includes the Chapel Choir, Manitou Singers, St. Olaf Cantorei, St. Olaf Choir, St. Olaf Orchestra, and Viking Chorus, performing as individual groups and as a massed ensemble. The CDs included narration and instrumental works, but the focus is on the voices and the beautiful traditional and original Christmas music. We particularly liked Graeme Morton's "In The Spendor" and "A Spotless Rose," Olaf Christiansen's "Light Everlasting," Alexandre Gretchaninoff's "Our Father" and "Only Begotten Son," John Rutter's "Candlelight Carol," Steven Amundson's "Angels' Dance," traditional hymns "Come Thou Long Expected Jesus," Handl's "For Unto Us A Child Is Born," "Lo, How A Rose," "I Saw Three Ships," "O Little Town of Bethlehem" and "Beautiful Savior" by F. Melius Christiansen, founder of the music program and the event in 1912. 32 cuts, many symphonically accompanied. Powerful, beautiful, triumphant music from one of the oldest and finest Christmas music festivals in America.

Songlist: Adagio (Enigma Variations), In The Splendor, Light Everlasting, Narration, Come Thou Long Expected Jesus, For unto us a Child Is Born, A Spotless Rose, Psalm 36, O nata lux De Lumine, Our Father, All My heart This Night Rejoices, Lo, How a Rose, Gospel, Joy To The World, All This Night, Only Only Begotten Son, The Three Kings, I Saw Three Ships, Candlelight Carol, O Little Town of Bethelehem, In The Bleak Midwinter, True Light, Angels' Dance, Carols From Scandinavia, Jeg Er Sa Glad, O Day Full of Grace, Child of Light, Narration, Lord of Light, Narration, Nunc Dimittis, Beautiful Savior
