Robert Shaw Festival Singers : A Cappella

Review: Since his death in 1999, Robert Shaw continues to be revered by American choral directors and music lovers, and his recorded interpretations are regarded as the gold standard among all those available. His numerous Grammy Awards attest to the regard in which he was held by his fellow musicians. This collection of seventeen choral selections are in recognition of Shaw's stellar body of work and were recorded during his last decade. These tracks are considered the best of the best, exquisite examples of the deep spiritual rapport Shaw achieved with unaccompanied choruses. One piece, the Verdi "Ave Maria," is performed by his 200-voice Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus in one of their rare opportunities to engage in a cappella singing. The remaining sixteen tracks were recorded by the smaller ensembles he formed in his final years-the Robert Shaw Festival Singers, who performed and recorded at his summer choral festivals in the south of France, and the Robert Shaw Chamber Singers, which brought together the best of his Atlanta voices for concerts and recordings during the winter months.

Songlist: O Vos Omnes, A New Commandment , Vinea Mea Electa , Videntes Stellam , Dieu! Quil La Fait Bon Regarder!, Waldesnacht, Abendstandchen , Heavenly Light , Svete Tikhyi , Vzbrannoy Boyevode , Ride On, King Jesus, Sometimes I Feel Like A Moaning Dove , Same Train, In A Garden Shady, Ave Maria, Magnificat , Kyrie

Robert Shaw Festival Singers : Amazing Grace

Review: The great choral arranging team of Robert Shaw and Alice Parker has given us some great music through the years. They have long been involved with the sacred hymns and spirituals of America, from the southern shape-note hymns to the African American spiritual. Amazing Grace is a compilation of these sacred songs. Selections include, "Wondrous Love," "Hark I Hear the Harps Eternal" and "Sometimes I Feel Like a Moanin' Dove." Originally heard on previous recordings by the Robert Shaw Chorale, these up dated versions by the Festival Singers are just as wonderful and uplifting.

Songlist: To God Our Strength, Come Away To The Skies, Wondrous Love, God Is Seen , Hark, I Hear The Harps Eternal, Bright Canaan, Amazing Grace, His Voice As The Sound, I Will Arise, Saints Bound For Heaven, Ride On, King Jesus, Poor Mourner, Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, Dere's No Hidin' Place, My God Is A Rock, Sometimes I Feel Like A Moanin' Dove, I Got Shoes, Soon One Morinin', Same Train, Lord, If I Got My Ticket

Robert Shaw Festival Singers : Appear & Inspire

Review: The great contribution of Robert Shaw to choral music has brought the listener to expect that nearly any recording or live performance under Shaw's direction will be thoroughly stunning, refreshing and performed with remarkable musical insight. On Appear and Inspire, Robert Shaw and the Robert Shaw Festival Singers give exactly this kind of performance of Argento's "I Hate and I Love", Debussy's "Trois Chansons", Poulenc's "Un Soir de Neige", Badings "Trois Chansons Bretonnes", Britten's "Hymn to St. Cecilia" and Ravel's "Trois Chansons."

Robert Shaw Festival Singers : Evocation of the Spirit

Review: This CD is a newly recorded collection of the most accessible, spiritually enlightening, and uplifting music of our time -- brilliantly interpreted by Robert Shaw and the Robert Shaw Festival Singers. It features Barber's Agnus Dei, a vocal arrangement by the composer of the hauntingly beautiful Adagio For Strings.

Robert Shaw Festival Singers : Liebeslieder Waltzes

Review: Led by master conductor and composer Robert Shaw, the RS Festival Singers perform 40 of Brahm's songs, lightly piano-accompanied and under three headings: "Lebeslieder-Walzer, Op. 52, Neue Liebeslieder-Walzer, Op. 65, and Sieben Abendlieder. The large, extensive liner notes have all the lyrics. We particularly liked "Liebeslieder-Walzer" cuts 1, 5, 6, 11, and 14, "Neue Liebeslieder-Walzer Op. 65, cuts19, 21, 23, 26, 30 and 31, and "Sieben Abendlieder" cuts 34, 37, 38 and 40. As with all Robert Shaw CDs, this one is elegantly arranged, beautifully sung and perfectly directed-great material, wonderfully performed!

Robert Shaw Festival Singers : O Magnum Mysterium

Review: The final years of Robert Shaw's life saw a return to his devotion to unaccompanied vocal music. Many will remember the Robert Shaw Chorale which was so popular in the 1950s and into the '60s. For two decades ending with his official retirement in 1989, Robert Shaw was the conductor and music director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. During that period most of his choral work was for orchestra and chorus. Yet even before his retirement he had established the Robert Shaw Choral Institute which devoted it's efforts to furthering choral arts through conductor training, workshops and performances. Through the establishment of its summer festivals beginning in 1989, participants who were selected by audition came to the Quercy district of south-central France for two weeks of instruction and intensive rehearsal, culminating in a week of performances in the wonderful medieval churches of the region. Many of the recordings on this release were obtained by Telarc during the momentary summer existence of the Robert Shaw Festival Singers. In the winters Robert Shaw created the Chamber Singers to further the practice of choral music. From both these groups has been assembled a group of recordings which reflect the deeply spiritual nature of the founder. Several of them have never been released before. You will find classical works by Tallis, Poulenc, Rachmaninoff, Schubert, and others in addition to several gospels sung by some of the most beautiful voices of the time. This is glorious full choral splendor!

Songlist: If Ye Love Me, A New Commandment, O Vos Omnes, O Magnum Mysterium, O Magnum Mysterium, O Magnum Mysterium, Praise The Name of The Lord, Der Entfernten, American Hymns and Spirituals : Wondrous Love, Amazing Grace, Sometimes I feel Like a Moanin' Dove, Totus Tuus, OP. 60

Robert Shaw Festival Singers : Poulenc

Review: One of the members of Les Six, a group of avante garde French composers, Francis Poulenc was one of the twentieth century's most notable composers of sacred choral music. Much of this dynamic music is gentle with a mystic sense of simplicity. There are often passages with a rocking alternation of chords with false harmonic relations. Selections from this wonderful recording by then Robert Shaw Festival Singers include the Mass in G major, Four Short Prayers of Saint Francis as well as motets for Christmas and Penitence. The music of Poulenc is must for any collection.

Songlist: Mass In G Major, Quatre Motets Pour le Temps de Noel:, Quatre Motets Pour Un Temps de Penitence:, Quatre Petites De St. Francois d'Assise

Robert Shaw Festival Singers : Rachmaninoff Vespers

Review: Vespers is a musical setting for a night-long service celebrated in Russian monasteries and Russian orthodox churches. Written at the height of Rachmaninoff's compositional powers, the Vespers setting is considered to be the finest of his sacred works. This lush and beautiful composition for unaccompanied voices, in an eloquent performance by Robert Shaw and his talented festival chorus, is captured dramatically by Telarc in the spacious acoustic of the Church of St. Pierre, Gramat, France. This recording won a Grammy award in 1990.

Songlist: Priidite, Poklonimsya-Come, Let Us Worship, Blagoslovi, Dushe Moya-Bless The Lord, O My soul, Blazhen Muzh-Blessed Be The Man, Svete Tikhyi-O Serene Light, Nyne Otpushchayeshi-Now Let Thy Servant Depart, Bogoroditsye Devo, Raduisya-Rejoice O Virgin, Slava V Vyshnikh Bogu-Glory To God In The Highest, Khvalite Imya Gospondene-Praise The Name Of The Lord, Blagosloven Yesi, Gospodi-Blessed Art Thou, O Lord, Voskreseniye Khristove Videvshe-Having Seen the Resurrection Of The Lord, Velichit Dusha Moya Gospoda-My Soul Magnifies The Lord, Slava V Vyshnikh Bogu-Glory To God In The Highest, Dnes Spaseniye Miru Byst-Troparia Of The Day Of Salvation, Voskres Iz Groba-Christ Is Risen From The Grave-Troparia Of The Resurrection, Vzbrannoy Voyevode-Thanksgiving To The Mother Of God

Robert Shaw/Atlanta Symphony : Barber/Bartok/Williams

Review: Barber's Prayers of Kierkegaard was commissioned by the Koussevitsky Foundation in 1942, but the composer did not complete the work until January, 1954. It is a setting, in the form of a single-movement cantata, of four prayers by the Danish theologian and philosopher Soren Kierkegaard (1813-1855). Robert Shaw gave the American premiere of Bartok's Cantata Profana at Carnegie Hall in 1952. For this recording, he has used a refined version of the English translation of the text he made for that premiere performance. Vaughan Williams's Dona Nobis Pacem was intended as a warning of the threat of war in Europe in the mid-1930s. The texts are taken from the poetry of Walt Whitman, the Bible, the Latin Mass, and from a speech made in the British House of Commons during the Crimean War in the 1850s by John Bright.

Songlist: O Thou Who Art Unchangeable, Lord Jesus Christ, Who Suffered All Life Long, Father In Heaven, Well We Know That It Is Thou, Father In Heaven! Hold Not Our Sins Up Against Us, Part I, Part II, Part III, Agnus Dei , Beat! Beat! Drums!, Reconciliation, Dirge For Two Veterans, Angel Of Death, O Man Greatly Beloved

Rockefeller Chapel Choir : 20th Century German Sacred Music

Review: German church music goes back to Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation. Luther's love of music has influenced German composers for centuries. In the 20th century, this was no exception. The composers chosen for this recording all use Luther's chorale melodies, though with newer harmonies which lend themselves to fresher musical and textual expression. This recording includes motets by Hugo Distler and Johann Nepomuk David. All of the works are beautifully sung by the Rockefeller Chapel Choir.

Songlist: Pater Noster, Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied (Opus 12. No. 1), O Heiland, reiss die Himmel auf (Opus 21, Pt. 2, No. 3), Lo! How a E'er Blooming (from the Christmas Story), Es ist das Heil uns Kommen her (Opus 6, Pt. 2, No. 2), Furwahr, er trug unsere Krankheit (Opus 12, No. 9), Deutsche Messe:, Das Kyrie, Das Credo, Das Agnus Dei, Das Gloria, Das Sanctus, Victimae paschali Laudes (Opus 35, No. 1), Nun bitten wir den heiligen Geist, Veni Creator Spiritus

Rockefeller Chapel Choir : Lamentations & Exultation

Review: The two extremes in sacred music are lamenting and praising. In their take on the subjects, the Rockefeller Chapel Choir, led by Randi Von Ellefson, chose pieces from the Renaissance and the 20th century. There are several settings of the Lamentations of Jeremiah including that of Palestrina and di Lasso. There is a lovely Easter Anthem by William Billings as well as beautiful psalm settings by Stanley Hoffman. On this CD the choir alternates lamentation with exultation. Daniel Pinkham's striking "Here Repose, O Broken Body" provides quiet and thoughtful ending to an emotionally varied recording.

Songlist: The Eyes of All Wait Upon Thee, De Lamentatione Jeremiae Prophitae, Sabbato Sancto, Lectio I , Christus Factus Est , Lamentation Secunda Tertii Diei (Elegia Quarta, 1-7), Easter Anthem , David Mourns for Absalom , Psalm 23 , Psalm 121 , Give Thanks Unto the Lord, Lamentations, Passion Music , Here Repose, O Broken Body

Rose Ensemble : Slavic Holiday

Review: The Rose Ensemble's third recording features music from medieval and Renaissance Poland and Czechoslovakia, including motets from the Prague manuscript Codex Specialnik and several lovely spiritual songs extolling the virtues of various Slavic saints and heroes. The Rose Ensemble, based in Minneapolis/St. Paul, handles this material with great skill and grace. Their vocal tone is bright yet warm, and their articulation is clear and crisp. This is interesting music from a part of the world we've just begun to explore. This music is at once familiar and exotic.

Saint Mary's College Women's Choir : Anima Mea!

Review: Pride of South Bend, Indiana's Saint Mary's College, this talented 35-voice choir commissions performs and publishes new works for women's voices (The Saint Mary's College Choral Series, published by earthsongs). Touring nationally to acclaim, "Anima" is the group's third excellent recording. 17 songs, Randal Stroope's "Magnificat," Imant Raminsh's "In The Beginning," Wm. Hawley's "Salve Regina," Paul Carey's "When I Bring You Colour'd Toys" and two by Gwyneth Walker, "Walk That Valley" and "So Many Angels!" are particularly wonderful. We also enjoyed a beautifully arranged "Over the Rainbow" and the group's trademark "The Bells of Saint Mary's." Some light accompaniment, and a nice liner notes booklet with information about the group and the songs. Lovely!

Songlist: Magnificat, O Sacrum Convivium, In the Beginning, Artsa Alinu, Sursum Corda, Mass No. 6 for Treble Voices, Salve Regina, Sanctus, Over the Rainbow, The Road Home, When I Bring to You Colour'd Toys, Walk That Valley, So Many Angels!, The Bells of Saint Mary's

Saint Thomas Choir of Men and Boys : A Cappella II

Review: This disc, featuring a variety of sacred works by 20th-century composers and arrangers, fully measures up to this revered choir's reputation for first-rate singing and for being what can only be described as America's finest English cathedral choir. Everything from the bright, prominent treble tone to the enunciation and inflection--even the choir's vestments--comes from the long-established Anglican tradition, and under the careful tutelage of director Gerre Hancock these choristers have nothing to apologize for, either in technique or in musicianly command of the repertoire. The repertoire includes several traditional favorites--Stanford's Latin motets, for example--along with works closely associated with Saint Thomas, including choir-member Anthony Piccolo's beautiful anthem Heaven and Heart, T. Tertius Noble's Go to Dark Gethsemane, and Hancock's own arrangement of the Spiritual Deep River. Along the way we encounter the intensely overwrought and way-too-long Magnificat by Alan Gray and the tedious-and-fussy Vox dicentis by Edward Naylor. Stanford's gorgeous but extremely tricky motets provide many moments of listening pleasure but also reveal their challenges as the choir trebles struggle with intonational control in several places, especially in the somewhat cumbersome and awkwardly written eight-part Coelos ascendit hodie (no choir sings this piece well) and in the opening and closing bars of Beati quorum via.

Songlist: Eternal Light - Sowerby, Go To The Gethsemane - Noble, A Setting Of Collect - Parker, Heaven And Heart - Piccolo, Draw Us In The Spirit's Tether - Ossewaarde, Three Motets - Stanford, Magnificat - Gray, Nunc Dimittis - Wood, "Tis The Day Of Resurrection - Wood, Vox Dicentis: Clama - Naylor, Sonate En Ut Mineur - Gui;mant, Deep River , The Good News, Ezeckiel Saw De Wheel

Saint Thomas Choir of Men and Boys : Rejoice In The Lamb - Benjamin Britten

Review: The 29 men and boys of New York City's renowned Saint Thomas Choir of Men and Boys present the choral music of British composer Benjamin Britten (1913-1976). Included are "Te Deum in C Major," "A Hymn of St. Columba," "Jubilate Deo in C," "Hymn to St. Cecilia, Op 27," "Prelude and Fugue on a Theme of Vittoria," "Hymn to St. Peter" and the 7 movements of "Rejoice in the Lamb, Op. 30." Britten's compositions are brilliant, eclectic and difficult to perform, but they are handled beautifully and seemingly effortlessly by the Choir. There is some organ accompaniment. A fine collection of the works of a British master composer, by one of America's great all-male choirs.

Songlist: Te Deum in C Major, A hymn of St. Columba, Jubilate Deo in C, Hymn to St. Cecilia, Op. 27, Prelude and Fugue on a Theme of Vittoria, Hymn to St. Peter, Rejoice in the Lamb, Op. 30

Founder/director Ralph B. San Antonio Vocal Arts Ensemble : Guadalupe Virgen de los Indios

Review: The Virgin Of Guadalupe (Mexico), according to the account, appeared in a vision in 1531, and inspired many compositions in her honor, fusing the indigenous American and colonial Spanish musics of the period. Though many of the tracks on this CD are accompanied by the traditional instruments of the culture (pre-Columbian flutes, Mexican percussion) the excellence of the seven voices of SAVAE (featured on National Public Radio) makes this a worthy addition to our catalog. The works of Tomas Pascual are featured, as well as Franco and Valeriano; some, such as "Aufer A Nobis Iniquitates," are typical of the vocal polyphony of sixteenth century motets; others, such as "Hoi Nace La Nueba Estiella," are homophonic, with folk dance rhythms and simple tunes. A beautiful recording of great merit.

San Francisco Boys Chorus : We're On Our Way

Review: The SF Boys Chorus, founded as a resource for the San Francisco Opera in 1948, has developed into one of America's foremost musical and educational institutions for singing boys. Over the years the chorus has regularly provided boys for choruses and solos for the SF Opera, Symphony, Ballet and the Carmel Bach Festival. Officially named "SF's Singing Ambassadors to the World," the chorus has performed in Carnegie Hall and toured in Europe, Russia, Japan, Korea, Italy and Australia. "We're On Our Way" has 16 songs, particularly nice are the 6 movements of Mozart's "Missa Brevis in C, K.220," and his "Laudate Dominum," Cesar Franck's "Panis Angelicus," Henry Purcell's "Sound the Trumpet," Schubert's "Ave Maria," F. Coppola's sweet "Little Moon," and Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Pie Jesu from 'Requiem." All piano, organ or orchestrally (by the SF Boys Chorus Orchestra) accompanied. Truly lovely!

San Francisco Chamber Singers : Freed From Words

Review: San Francisco-based composer Mark Winges writes music that is both familiar and strange; speaking to our oldest human qualities, beyond words... It embraces the versatility of the human voice: screams, whispers, whistling, muffled garbles, throat singing, speaking, and lyrical singing are all bound together into a tapestry of living, liquid a cappella sound. Think of the mind-blowing choral works of Penderecki, Messiaen, Takemitsu, or Ligeti's brooding score to 2001: A Space Odyssey. Winges' latest CD, Freed from Words expresses the abstract and the specific: Magic Strings places the listener in the swarthy world of a witch's sabbath; The Oh of Moon and Piano illustrates the moon and piano caught up in celestial dance; Haiku Settings unfold pithy sonic snapshots; Freed from Words uses phonemes and other pre-lingual vocal sounds. Composer in residence for the virtuosic San Francisco chamber singers, (three- time winners of ASCAP's "Award for Adventurous Programming of Contemporary Music") Winges seamlessly blends a wide variety of influences into an evocative choral world. Conductor Robert Geary (recently given the "Outstanding Conductorial Achievement" award at the International Children's and Youth Choir Festival) insures that all the singers involved, from children to adult, make the vocal gymnastics sound effortless. This recording will transport anyone with a love of choral music and an open ear.

Songlist: Magic Strings, Haiku Settings - Three Sets, Freed From Words, The Moon - Welcome, Wishes Night, The Oh of Moon and Piano

San Francisco Choral Artists : Music Among Friends

Review: The SFCA has been delighting Bay Area audiences since 1985 with their perfectly-balanced blend of 24 voices, fresh and unusual song selection and elegant presentation of choral classics and new music by contemporary composers. Magen Solomon has been Music Director of the group since 1995, and she also directs the Oakland Symphony Chorus. "Music Among Friends" celebrates the ties of this chamber ensemble with the "lively community of local composers who have generously shared their wonderful music with us." 16 of these 22 works, chosen from live performances of the last 5 years, are by Bay Area composers, many are world premieres and several others have never been commercially recorded. Some of our favorites are a pair by Russell Burnham, "The Dance" and "Sonnet 4: O You Tender Ones," Paul Chihara's "Lie Lightly, Gentle Earth," Allen Shearer's dissonant gem "The Marriage," John Kelley's poignant "When You Are Old," Paul Crabtree's "First and Last Kiss," Wm. Hawley's soaring "Vita de la mia vita," Robert Starey's surprising, powerful "It Is an Easy Thing," Kirke Mechem's beautiful "Loveliest of Trees," Halsey Stevens' "Go, Lovely Rose," Conrad Susa's "The Gallant One" and "The Kings of the Deck" and the lovely hymn, "In the Valley." There is occasional accompaniment, but mostly wonderful a cappella harmonies from this polished, talented ensemble. We loved every cut of "Music Among Friends!"

San Francisco Choral Artists : So Gracious Is The Time - An American Christmas

Review: A Christmas collection that attempts to narrow the gap between the music most performed (that written before 1900) and the vibrant work of living, working composers. "So gracious" the aptly-named Choral Artists combined beloved classics, fresh and original arrangements of traditional melodies, and some of their favorite (and previously unrecorded) works of Bay Area Composers. Favorites are Laurie Lee's powerful "Twelfth Night," Fenno Heath's flawless arrangements of "I Wonder as I Wander" and "What Child is This?," Herbert Bielawa's "Sweet Was the Song," William Billings' lilting, joyous "A Virgin Unspotted," "Ave Maria" and "Silent Night," both arranged by David Conte, Roger Nixon's 3-part "Wonders of Christmas" particularly "Christmas Greeting," Wm. Dawson's fine spiritual "Hail Mary!," John Stephenson's powerful "Milford" and Ruth Thornhill's "Snowfall," arranged by Gene Puerling. The eclectic and engaging "So gracious" touches, surprises and delights us with every song!

Songlist: Twelfth Night, I Wonder As I Wander , What Child Is This , Sweet Was The Song , In The Bleak Midwinter, A Virgin Upspotted, Sanctus , Almighty Father, Ave Maria , Glory To God In The Highest, Ave Maria , Virga Jesse Flourit , O Magnum Mysterium, Ave Maria, Wonders Of Christmas, Milford, Sherburne, Hail Mary , Deck The Halls, Snowfall , Silent Night

San Francisco Choral Artists : Star of Wonder - Music For The Season

Review: Founded in 1984, Director Hooper and the well-chosen, balanced 24 voices immediately displayed a fresh and elegant sound, using on this first Christmas recording, for example, as wide a palette of moods, colors, rhythms and textures as possible. So although we've heard practically all of these tunes before, the bright arrangements and surprising accompaniment (harp, flute, organ and "The Ringmasters" bellringers) adds to our appreciation of this 21-song collection. Favorites are a Stephen Paulus-arranged "We Three Kings," Heinrich Schutz' beautiful "Cantate Domino," Tomas Luis de Victoria's "Gloria from Missa O Magnum Mysterium," Praetorius' "Gaudete Omnes," Roger Nixon's a cappella "Green Growth the Holly," Kirke Mecham's lovely "Christmas Carol," Francis Poulenc's "O Magnum Mysterium," Anton Bruckner's soaring, angelic "Virga Jesse" and ""Noel Nouvelet" and "Deck the Hall," both arranged by our friend Ken Malucelli. "Star is a special treat, to be kept in a safe place, so that it can be savored and enjoyed with the coming of the holidays!

San Francisco Girls Chorus : Heaven and Earth

Review: The music on this two disc set is some of the greatest sacred and secular repertoire ever written for treble voices, selected to showcase the talents of the young members of the San Francisco Girls Chorus. The first disc, "Heaven," contains sacred music both accompanied and a cappella. Two of our favorites are mini-masterworks, Benjamin Britten's lovely "Missa Brevis in D," for voices and organ, and Francis Poulenc's mysterious "Litanies a la vierge noire." Disc II, "Earth," focuses on secular music to capture human qualities such as sorrow, joy, humor and hope. The centerpieces of the disc are three new commissions by Gabriela Lena Frank, Augusta Read Thomas and Dwight Nakamura. Frank's beautiful settings of two Peruvian poems, Thomas' elegant use of E.E. Cummings' poetry and Nakamura's jazzy take on Irving Berlin's "Blue Skies" are all very special. Conductor Susan McMane directs this renowned chorus in 24 beautiful tunes. A wonderfully packaged set with extensive liner notes would make a memorable, timeless holiday gift to your family and to others on your list!

Songlist: Psalm 150, Ave Verum, Missa Brevis In D, Toccata from Suite Pour L'orgue, Glory to God for This Transient Life, Litanies a la virge noire, Ave Maria, Ave Verum Corpus, Ave Maria, Ave Maria, I Dream a World, I Cannot Dance O Lord, The Water of Tyne, Two Mountain Songs, Two E.E. Review: The 11 to 16 years old members of San Francisco Girls Chorus, led by conductor Sharon J. This is actually Chorissima, the 41-member concert and touring ensemble of the Chorus, and this is a tour-de-force CD of 17th century Italian sacred music. San Francisco Girls Chorus : Voices of Hope and Peace

Review: Beginning in 2004 with their desire to record "Anne Frank, A Living Voice," written for Chorissima's 25th Anniversary, "Voices" is the result of their search for work by women writers like Frank, who were longing for change in their situations. Joan Szymko's powerful "Vivos Voco" and "Nada Te Turbe" (with text by St. Teresa of Avila (1515-82), "A Hope Carol," and "Echo," which feature wonderful poems by Christina Rossetti (1830-94), and "I Shall Keep Singing," with text by Emily Dickinson, are fine examples. Libby Larsen's "The Womanly Song of God" and "Sing Me to Heaven," with text by Jane Griner, lead us into the lovely, haunting 7-part "Anne Frank, A Living Voice," which touches and moves us on many levels. "Hebrew Rounds for Peace" is an apt choice for the final tune. Light accompaniment throughout, and extensive, colorful liner notes. "Voices" is another beautiful, powerful, well-chosen collection by Susan McMane's talented San Francisco Girls Chorus.

Songlist: Vivios Voco, A Hope Carol, Echo, Nada Te Turbe , I Shall Keep Singing , The Womanly Song Of God, Sing Me To Heaven, Anne Frank: A Living Voice, Hebrew Rounds For Peace

San Francisco Symphony Chorus - John Adams : Harmonium

Review: Premiered 19 years ago, Harmonium served notice that America would be able to claim another major composer as its own before history closed the books on the 20th century. Only ten years later, at the debut of The Death of Klinghoffer, John Adams was already a figure of international renown, having been commissioned for new pieces by a formidable number of performing arts institutions throughout the world. These two works - both written to texts, and numbering among the composer's deepest and most emotionally affecting compositions - are bookends to a decade of meteoric ascendence for this Bay Area figure.

Songlist: Negative Love, Because I Could Not Stop For Death, Wild Nights, Chorus of the Exiled Palestinians, Chorus of the Exiled Jews, Ocean Chorus, Night Chorus, Chorus of the Hager and the Angel, Desert Chorus, Day Chorus

Santa Fe Desert Chorale : A Celebration of Hispanic Music

Review: A study of the evolution of musical style in Hispanic churches in the New World reveals a remarkable melding of a number of cultures. Spanish colonists carried the musical traditions of the European Renaissance to the native people of the Americas, and, through time and circumstance, these traditions merged in the American Southwest to create a musical genre with a rich historical grounding. A treasury of sacred works by the finest composers from Spain and the New World - from the Renaissance majesty of Morales and Victoria to the Misa Criolla, one of the 20th century's most beloved choral works. This is the program that was performed for a tour of Northern New Mexico historic churches during the summer of 2005.

Songlist: Misa Criolla - Ariel Ramirez, Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Die, Two Aztec Songs to the Virgin (Don Hernando Franco), Santa Maria yn ilhuicac, Dios itlaconantzine, Sancta Maria, succurre miseris - (Cristobal de Morales), Alleluia! Dic nobis Maria - (Francisco Lopez Capillas), Sanctus and Hosanna - (Francisco Guerrero), In Annuntiatione Benissimae Mariae - (Tomas Luis de Victoria), Egregie Doctor - (Antonio de Salazar/Manuel de Sumaya), Sol-fa de Pedro - (Manuel de Sumaya), In manus tuas - (Sebastian de Vivanco), Sa qui turo zente pleta - (Anonymous)

Santa Fe Desert Chorale : Christmas in Santa Fe

Review: Recorded live at Santa Fe's Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis, the Chorale's latest CD inlcudes beloved carols from around the world, the majestic O Holy Night, John Rutter's lilting Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day, Steven Heitzeg's charming setting of the e.e. cummings poem, little tree, and much more beautiful music of the season. Christmas in Santa Fe is colored by the Mexican influence. Little lanterns adorn some of the adobe buildings and the candlelight processions known as posadas wend thru the town. The program of 20 separate selections was recorded live during two nights' performances at a Winter Festival last year in the historic Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis. The intent was to capture some of the inspiration and job of this time of the year.

Review: Over the last 25 years, the Santa Fe Desert Chorale has earned a reputation for artistic excellence as well as adventurous and widely varied programming, and this recording of the final performances of the 2007 summer season continues in that tradition! This limited edition CD captures the Desert Chorale presenting monumental works by Gregorio Allegri and Sergei Rachmaninoff live at the Cathedral Basilica St. Francis in Santa Fe on August 10 and 11, 2007. In addition, 32 Desert Chorale alumni singers - including members of the 1983 inaugural season - joined this season's choir in presenting Miserere, mei Deus. This recording is dedicated to the memory of Arthur "Mack" Wright, a wonderful friend and enthusiastic admirer of the Chorale's "glorious music." Santa Fe Desert Chorale : Viva La Festividad!

Review: Viva La Festividad! In the 17th and 18th centuries Latin America was alive with the musical idioms of indigenous America, Africa and Europe. Santa Fe Women's Ensemble : Music Is Our Joy

Review: Santa Fe Women's Ensemble has been singing together for New Mexico audiences since 1981, and has performed all its Christmas concerts in the acoustically magnificent Loretta Chapel in Santa Fe. The 14-voice group performs seldom-heard and challenging music from all periods, and has commissioned 22 new works. The pieces on this Christmas album are from Christmas and Spring Offering concerts from 2003 to 2005. Dr. Linda Raney has directed the SFWE since 1988 and is director of music and organist at the 1st Presbyterian Church in Santa Fe. There are 24 songs, some lightly accompanied, in this generous, eclectic collection. Jim Leininger's soaring "Deo Gracias," Karl Henning's "Alleluia in D," William Byrd's "Non Nobis, Domaine," Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's "What Can Lambkins Do," Daniel Gawthrop's dissonant "There Is Sweet Music," Pavel Chesnokov's "Otche nash" and Stuart McIntosh's "Baloo Baleerie" are lovely, rarely-heard, unexpected selections for a Christmas album, but they work. Michael Larkin's "Ave Maria," "Carol of the Drum," Palestrina's "Hodie Christus Natus Est," "Four Noels," "Il est ne, le divin Enfant," "Polish Christmas Carols" and Handl's "O magnum mysterium" are more familiar and no less enjoyable. "When the Savior Christ is born," "He is sleeping in a manger," "Sleep Thou, my Jewel," Keith Christopher's "Beyond Winter," Naomi Stephan's "Hodie" and Uzee Brown Jr.'s "Oh, the Savior's Comin, Hallelu" are all relatively new to us, lovely and fine. Review: Founded in 1989 by artistic director Kris Mason, the 200 choristers of the SCC are formed, in a nurturing Christian environment, into four progressive choirs. The Training Chorus is for 7 to 9 year olds, the Intermediate choir welcomes young musicians ready to develop part-singing and more advanced vocal skills. The Performing Chorus, formed of 12-18 year-olds, performs in various venues locally and across the country and the world. The newest level is a mixed voice chamber choir, a sophisticated means for SCC's oldest singers to transition to college music programs. 22 songs, all recorded live, beginning with 5 songs by the Performing Chorus: "Domine Deus," "Weep No More," "Rise Up, My Love," "Ask the Moon" and "The World Is Full of Poetry. Six songs by the Chamber Singers, including the dramatic "The Word Was God," "Dirge for Two Veterans," the Ugandan Praise Song "Palapanda," the spiritual "Goin' Up to Glory," and "O My Luve's Like a Red, Red Rose." A nice cut by the Young Women's Chorus, " TheWater of Tyne," and the Intermediate Chorus's very nice " The Lord is My Shepherd," "The Poet Sings" and "The Drinking Gourd," are followed by the Training Chorus's sweet "Where Go the Boats, "Wind on the Hill" and "Little Talk." The choruses perform in various combinations, leading up to the lovely final cut, the Combined Choruses' "The Lord Bless You and Keep You." All songs are lightly accompanied. "A Young Poet" is a beautiful collection from Seattle's outstanding choral program for children!
