Peninsula Women's Chorus : Songs Of The Spirit

Review: Music strengthens your inner-self, whether in times of joy or sorrow. Songs of Spirit features music from the documentary Song of Survival. This music is from the collection of vocal orchestral pieces which were sung by Dutch, English and American women in a Japanese prison camp during World War II. Among the pieces sung were, "Largo" from the New World Symphony by Dvorak, the "Pastoral Symphony" from Handel's Messiah and the steadfast "Captive's Hymn" written in 1942 by one of the music's arrangers Margaret Dryburgh. These pieces were first performed by the Peninsula Women's Chorus for the documentary "Song of Survival" and featured in the movie Paradise Road. Also featured is the song cycle "Indian Singing," based on poetry by Gail Tremblay, composed by Ron Jeffers. This piece was written specifically for the Peninsula Women's Chorus. This CD contains some very powerful music

Songlist: Examine Me, Ave Maria, Largo, Minuet in G, First Movement, Pastoral Symphony, Raindrop Prelude, Londondderry Air, Captive's Hymn, Whitman "Credo", Snowforms / Indian Singing, In Dreams, We Wake the Day, Sehia:rak I-IV, Here Is Holiness, Shenandoah

Peninsula Women's Chorus : Treasures

Review: Established in 1966, the 73-strong PWC has been ably led since 1975 by renowned Director Patricia Hennings, Director of Choral Activities at Skyline College. The group has performed at numerous ACDA conventions, toured internationally and appeared on NPR and television both here and abroad. Josephine Gandolfi supplies gentle accompaniment, placing the focus on the angelic voices of the group. The group's repertoire includes contemporary sacred music like Agneta Skold's "Gloria," Hakan Olsson's "Da Pacem," David Conte's "Hosanna," Libby Larsen's "Who Cannot Weep, Come Learn of Me," Michael Cleveland's "Pie Jesu," Brian Holmes' Christmas carol "Good Cheer, and Nancy Telfer's lovely "The Blue Eye of God." Also included are de Victoria's 16th century sacred song, "Domaine, Non Sum Dignus," Gustav Holst's 19th century masterpiece, "Hymn to the Waters," Knut Nystedt's "Shells" and "Suoni," and finally, "In Praise of Music," written by David Conte to celebrate the PWC's 25th anniversary. "Treasures" is exactly that, soaring, beautiful and uplifting!

Peninsula Women's Chorus : Winter Patterns

Review: The 60-voice Palo Alto, CA-based PWC is known for adventurous programming, seeking out music written especially for women, and frequently commissioning new works. "Winter Patterns" is a Christmas collection of sacred works such as Chesnokov's "Dostoyno yest" (It is truly fitting) and "Svete tihiy" (Gladsome Light), Daniel Pinkham's 3-part "Christmas Cantata," Rebecca Clarke's "Ave Maria," Charles Griffin's "Agnus Dei," Poulenc's "Litanies a la Vierge Noire" and Veljo Tormis' 4-part "Talvemustrid" (Winter Patterns). There are also carols, Franz Gruber's "Silent Night," and the lesser-known "Salvator Mundi, A Carol Sequence" by William Mathias, which includes "Make we Merry," "Mirabile Mysterium," "Susanni," "Lullay" and "Welcome, Yule." Phoenix Bach Choir : A Southwest Christmas

Review: The Phoenix Bach Choir four years ago premiered Milagros de Navidad, a Christmas cycle for choir as a way of marking the holiday season in a Southwestern accent. In this recording, the choir has made Milagros the lead item in a superbly produced and packaged yuletide CD from an emerging Arizona label, Soundset. Jon Washburn conducts the ensemble of Frank Koonce, guitar; Mark Sunkett, percussion; and the choir with select soloists. In this sonically clean and vibrant recording, Milagros is a compendium of yuletide songs lovingly sung in Spanish and English, with running commentary from guitarist Koonce. Robert Tree Cody, on Native American Flute (the instrument of choice this season, it seems), is also heard here, in Washburn's own Noel Sing We, a kind of American Indian-haunted holiday landscape.

Songlist: Milagros de Navidad, Los Reyes de Oriente , Angels we have heard on high , A la nanita nana (Lullaby), Alla en el portal (Away in a manger) , Noche de paz (Silent night) , Fum fum fum , Noel Sing We, Magnificat secundi toni, Lo, how a rose e're blooming, The Star, I wonder as I wander, How brightly shines the morning star, Rise up, shepherd, an' follow, Weihnachtslieder

Phoenix Bach Choir : Eternal Rest

Review: Finnish composer Jaakko Mantyjarvi (b. 1963) writes some of today's more innovative choral music. It's not only creatively interesting but it also maintains the qualities of tonal/harmonic accessibility and text-centered immediacy that allows it to register with a broad spectrum of listeners. His collections of Shakespeare Songs, More Shakespeare Songs, and No More Shakespeare Songs show a composer at once in love with his subject and fully in tune with his audience - and one clearly in possession of a sense of humor! On this recording we hear a profoundly serious work, in memory of the victims of a terrible Baltic Sea tragedy in September, 1994, in which the luxury ferry Estonia sank in a storm, killing 852 passengers. Canticum Calamitatis Maritimae incorporates elements of Psalm 107 ("They that go down to the sea in ships...") with news accounts of the disaster (taken from a Latin-language Finnish radio broadcast), employing dramatic, rich-textured choral utterances (including the whispered prayers of the opening and closing bars) along with chant-inspired passages and an occasional folk-song-like melody, all of which culminates in an extended passage of beautiful and often surprising harmonies, ideally defining the text at the end of the Psalm: "He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still..." This is a moving and memorable work, one that these choirs perform with care and confidence under Charles Bruffy's artful direction. Frank Martin's Mass for double choir has been recorded many times--and mostly very well--and this is another fine rendition of a work that seems to register its "classic" credentials more impressively every time you hear it. Rene Clausen's In pace, cut from the same vibrant-colored harmonic cloth as the Ticheli, is another work that deserves repertoire status, and again, Bruffy's singers perfectly capture its nuances of texture and dynamics and give full measure to the big sonorities. The complementary acoustics of Camelback Bible Church in Paradise Valley, Arizona, expertly recorded for this hybrid SACD, complete a program that should have strong appeal to all choral music fans.

Songlist: Cabticum Calamitatus Maritimae, There Will Be Rest , In Pace, Messe Pour Double Choeur

Phoenix Bach Choir : Shakespeare In Song

Review: Founded in 1958 as the Bach and Madrigal Society, the Choir originally focused on Renaissance and baroque period music, but today is equally dedicated to the creation and performance of new music. They are conducted by Charles Bruffy, one of the most highly respected choral conductors in the US. The CD features 23 songs, beginning with 7 cuts from Matthew Harris' "Shakespeare Songs," and 5 "Songs of Ariel from Shakespeare's 'The Tempest.' Steven Sametz' lovely "When He Shall Die," Jaakko Mantyjarvi's "Four Shakespeare Songs," Nils Lindberg's minor-key "Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer's Day," Dominick Argento's "Sonnet No. LXIV," Alan Murray's "O mistress mine," and the CD finishes strong with Ralph Vaughan Williams' "Three Shakespeare Songs." The Choir beautifully takes us into the drama, moodiness, pathos, romance and celebration of these songs, most of which are new to our ears. A worthy project, and a winning CD for Bruffy and his talented Phoenix Bach Choir! Extensive, colorful liner notes.

Songlist: Shakespeare Songs , The Tempest , When He Shall Die , Four Shakespeae Songs , Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? , Sonnet No. LXIV , O mistress mine!, Three Shakespeare Songs

Phoenix Bach Choir / Kansas City Chorale : Grechaninov - Passion Week

Review: The Grechaninov 'Passion Week' is a setting of thirteen pieces with texts in Church Slavonic meant to be sung individually over the period of Passion Week, the days leading up to the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. The Russian Orthodox Church has a tradition of morning and evening services during Passion Week when the passion week's events are recalled almost in 'real time.' The music itself is generally slow, meditative, largely monophonic and almost trance-like. One notices that the usual number of singers in these two choirs has been supplemented by several additional basses, no surprise considering the long legato lines required of that section. Their low C's and even B's resound like the tolling of great bells throughout the work. One could almost surmise, if one didn't know, that this was the singing of a Russian choir, so noted for their deep basses, except that the blending and rounding of the choral tone is so very much more subtle than is generally heard from Russian choruses. The work is entirely a cappella and there are occasional soprano, tenor and baritone solos which consist mostly of chants sung against the main body of massed sound.

Songlist: Behold, the Bridegroom, I see Thy bridal chamber, In Thy Kingdom, Gladsome Light, Let my prayer be set forth, Now the powers of heaven, At Thy mystical supper, The wise thief, Thou who clothest Thyself, The Lord is God... The noble Joseph, Weep not for me, O Mother, As many of you... Arise, O God, Let all mortal flesh

Phoenix Bach Choir / Kansas City Chorale : Rheinberger

Review: 'The massed forces of the Phoenix Bach Choir and Kansas City Chorale 'make a formidable choral machine' (BBC Music Magazine) and the choirs under the baton of Charles Bruffy here present a collection of unaccompanied sacred choral works by Josef Rheinberger. The disc includes the only available recordings of his Oster-Hymne for double chorus and Four Six-part Motets, op.133. The Oster-Hymne is a setting of two ancient Easter texts, particularly the famous sequence Victimae paschali laudes. During his lifetime, Rheinberger was lauded as a talented performer, prolific composer and masterful teacher. He observed that his primary consideration in music 'is that it shall be beautiful; music that does not sound beautiful has no attraction for me'.

Songlist: Oster-Hymne, Op. 134 for Eight Voices (Double Choir) for Church and Concert, Vier sechsstimmige Motetten, Op. 133 for Church and Concert, Mass, Op. 109 in E flat major for Double Choir, Drei geistliche Gesange, Op. 69 for Mixed Choir

Phoenix Boys Choir : Missa Criolla

Review: Since 1948, the Phoenix Boys Choir has provided a top-quality music education for boys 7-14 and spirited entertainment for audiences around the world. Concert tours throughout the US, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Mexico and the Orient have won the group a reputation as one of the world's outstanding boy choirs. In 2001 the Choir won a Grammy for Best Choral Performance for its recording of Penderecki's Credo with the Oregon Bach Festival Orchestra and Chorus, conducted by Helmuth Rilling. "Miso" features the powerful "Misa Criolla" and 10 more inspired, sacred and traditional songs from Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Peru. Some favorites (some accompanied by the band Khenany from Sonora) are the familiar tunes "El Condor Pasa," "Escondido," "Cielito Linda," "Eu e voce" from Brazil, the five parts of the title tune," the a cappella sacred songs "Hosanna, Filii David," "Una Hora," "Judas Mercator" and "Laudi Alla Vergine Maria." "Misa" is a joy, the bright sounds of the boys' voices working equally well with Khenany's salsa-flavored folk tunes as with the soaring sacred music!

Phoenix Choir : Spotless Rose: Hymns to the Virgin Mary

Review: 'Choral singing just doesn't get much better than this. When it comes to purity of tone, daunting precision and superfine blend, Charles Bruffy's remarkable Phoenix Chorale have it all - and then some!' - Gramophone Magazine. Praise indeed for this multiple Grammy nominated recording. Unified by its Marian idea, the program mixed classic British and contemporary American pieces in a novel way, and it provides an excellent window for the world on the vigorous tradition of a cappella choral music that has evolved independently of academic trends and their strictures. All the music here exploits, to a greater or lesser degree, the acoustic effects possible with an a cappella chorus in a large space, and Chandos, turning its engineers loose in an Arizona desert megachurch called the Camelback Bible Church, achieves spectacular results. The standout is perhaps the final four-movement Electa, by Kansas City composer Jean Belmont Ford, with its intense passages of overlap between a solo soprano tone and the choir and its haunting use of solo timpani and bass drum, the only instruments heard anywhere on the disc. Both the Ford work and the Two Marian Pieces by Spanish-born Javier Busto are world premieres, and both are likely to be eagerly adopted by other choirs. The singers shine equally in the subtle dissonances of the first of Busto's pieces and in the tricky artlessness of Benjamin Britten's A Hymn to the Virgin. This is a triumph of engineering, of choral singing, and of conducting on the part of Charles Bruffy, a protege of fabled American choral conductor Robert Shaw, who, like his mentor, has achieved impressive, sensuously irresistible results in a city without a deeply ingrained tradition of classical singing. Booket notes are in English, French, and German.

Songlist: Splendid Jewel, A Hymn to the Virgin, Ave, Regina, Ave, Maria, Regina Caeli, A Spotless Rose, Ave, Maris Stella, Ave, Maria, Fair in Face, I Beheld Her, Beautiful as a Dove, Rise up, My Love, My Fair One, De Profundis, Asperges me, Domine/Credo, Ave, Dulcissima Maria, Magnificat anima mea

Phoenix Chorale : Northern Lights - Choral Works of Ola Gjeilo

Review: The Grammy-award-winning Phoenix Chorale explores the magnetic music of New York-based, Norwegian-born composer Ola Gjeilo, Northern Lights contains five world premiere recordings and three choral pieces which were either commissioned, composed, or dedicated to the Phoenix Chorale. When he first heard Gjeilo's Ubi caritas, Charles Bruffy was instantly hooked, finding the music refreshing and magnetic. Bruffy brought Gjeilo's music to the Chorale and its audiences, and the response was immediate. Soon after, Gjeilo was invited to be the Chorale's first Composer-in-Residence. Phoenix, a setting of the Agnus Dei, is dedicated to Charles Bruffy and the Phoenix Chorale in honour of its fiftieth anniversary. When Gjeilo first visited the choir in Arizona, he had never been to the desert before, and the 'quiet beauty and barrenness of the landscape' moved him deeply. He describes Phoenix as 'symphonic in nature... one of those pieces where the text is very much the servant of the music, not the other way around'. In contrast, Northern Lights takes its inspiration from Gjeilo's homeland, Norway, and the 'terrible beauty' of the natural phenomenon that may be observed there. The music reflects the powerful and electric quality of the northern lights, which must have seemed both mesmerising and terrifying to people in the past when no one knew what they were, and superstition prevailed.

Songlist: The Ground , Serenity, Ubi caritas, Northern Lights, Dark Night of the Soul, The Spheres, Tota pulchra es, Prelude, Phoenix, Unicornis captivatur, Evening Prayer

Portland State University Chamber Choir : Veljo Tormis on American Shores

Review: Every recording has a story behind its genesis. In 2003 Estonian Composer Veljo Tormis heard the Portland State Chamber Choir while they were on tour in his country. Tormis was so taken with the brilliant artistry and expressive power of the ensemble he requested that Bruce Browne and his singers do a recording of his music sung in English. For almost two years the Singers, their conductor and the composer worked together on this project. Tormis was very prominent in the interpretation. He supervised the learning of the music in preparation for the Chamber Choir's appearance at the Northwest Convention of the American Choral Director's Association 2006. Veljo Tormis, On American Shores is a recording with a significance of strong integrity by both Composer and Artist. Bruce Browne is emeritus Professor of Music and Choir of the Vocal and Choral area at Portland State University. He is also Conductor Emeritus of the Portland Symphonic Choir and founder and director of the professional choir, Choral Cross-Ties. The Portland State Chamber Choir is recognized as one of the top University Chamber ensembles in the United States.

Princeton Singers : In The Midst of Life

Review: The music on this recording is a juxtaposition of joyous and somber. The album begins and ends with music by Gerald Finzi and features two Requiem settings by Henry Walford Davies and Herbert Howells. The setting by Davies, which is "in memory of those fallen in the war," begins with a beautiful soprano solo. The Requiems are set using texts from the Book of Common Prayer. The majority of the music on this recording is by twentieth century British composers, which is the focus of this group. The notable exception is Samuel Barber's Reincarnations. Princeton Singers : Reincarnations

Review: Reincarnations was recorded during the choir's first season under the direction of Steven Sametz. The repertoire explores a series of connections between the old and the new. It opens with Samuel Barber's Reincarnations, with texts by James Stephens which focus on different facets of love. Sametz has three pieces showcased on this recording: "On the Death of a Friend," "Magnificat" and "in time of ." Sametz's "Magnificat" is juxtaposed by that if Villiers Stanford, both featuring the resident choir of the American Boychoir School. Other pairings are two very different settings of the joyful text "Exultate Deo" by Palestrina and Poulenc. This is a very nice recording marking the beginning of a new era for this wonderful choir.

Pro Arte Singers - Paul Hillier : Traditional & Modern Carols

Review: This CD is an assortment of Christmas songs from England and America from the fifteenth through the twentieth centuries. Many of the songs are American shape-note and Shaker hymns as well as Appalachian folk songs. Some of the more familiar tunes include the "Coventry Carol: Lully, lulla, thow little tyne child," "I wonder as I wander" by John Jacob Niles and Emily Poston's sweet version of "Jesus Christ the Apple Tree." These songs are all beautifully sung by the Pro Arte Singers with the University of Indiana Children's Chamber Choir, led by Paul Hillier. This is a wonderful recording of rarely heard gems.

Ragazzi Boys Chorus : Canciones de Alabanza

Review: The 50 boy singers of San Mateo, CA's Ragazzi are conducted by Joyce Keil in this wonderful and diverse collection of songs of praise. From the solemn 14th-century pilgrim song ("Stella Splendens") and the wonderful Renaissance motet ("Salve Regina") to the folk rhythms of the "Misa Criolla" and the wild instrumental colors of the modern "Estampie Natalis," these songs all celebrate the birth of Jesus, and his mother. Taking on the hard work of learning these difficult pieces, the young singers skipped and danced out of the studio after perfecting a song. Other favorites are the 5 movements of Giacomo Perti's "Magnificat A 4," and Thomas Luis de Victoria's "O Sacrum Convivium." There is some accompaniment by organ, piccolo, strings, recorder, bass and percussion. A joyful, touching effort by talented Ragazzi.

Songlist: Estampie N atalis, Stella Spelndens, Salve Regina, Salve Regina, Magnificat A 4:, Maginificat, Et misericordia, Fecit potentiam, Recordatus, Sicut locutus est, O Sacrum Convivium, Misa Criolla:, Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei

Ragazzi Boys Chorus : Good News

Review: Since its founding in San Mateo, CA in1987, Ragazzi, The Peninsula Boys Chorus has grown to be one of the largest and most successful boy choirs in the San Francisco Bay area. Under the direction of Musical Director and and Co-founder, Joyce Keil, the chorus has toured Canada, Russia and Eastern Europe. The 20 songs are in 3 categories: sacred repertory, such as Cesar Franck's "Panis Angelicus," Bach's "Ave Maria," Gabriel Faure's "Sanctus (from Requiem)," and Elizabeth Poston's "Jesus Christ, the apple tree;" solos, duets and trios, like Antonio Caldera's "Alma del core," Handel's "Ombra mai fu," and Bach's "Wir eilen (from Cantata 78);" and secular repertory, Bedrich Smetana's "Ma Hvezda," the Serbian folk song "Niska Banja," Zoltan Kodaly's "Evening Song," the Slovak folk song "To ta Hel' pa," the Greek folk song, "The Kalanta of the New Year," and the spiritual "Ain-a that good news." ReGeneration : Christmas In Velvet Vol 1& 2

Review: 1991 release by Derric Johnson, esteemed director of the Voices of Liberty. Many of the arrangements are also his, and can be recognized by their dramatic codas and lofty soprano range. There are many familiar carols, such as 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,' 'O Come All Ye Faithful' and 'Little Drummer Boy,' just to name a few - 26 tracks in all. With that kind of variety, there is something for everyone: 'Sweet Little Jesus Boy,' a spiritual; 'Calypso Noel,' with that island rhythm; 'Pat-A-Pan,' in the French classical vein. 'Gesu Bambino' is one of the prettiest songs, a distinctive melody, coupled with an easy waltz tempo.

Songlist: Do You Hear What I Hear?, A Starry Night, Calypso Noel, Sweet Little Jesus Boy, Pat-A-Pan, Sing Allelulia/ In Excelsis Deo, I Wonder As I Wander, Christmas, Gesu Bambino, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, The Little Bitty Baby/ Wonderful Counselor, It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year, O Holy Night, Go Tell It On The Mountain, White Christmas, Fum Fum Fum, While Shepards Watched, The First Noel, O Come All Ye Faithful, What A Merry Little Christmas Tree, The Birthday Of A King, Winter Wonderland, Little Drummer Boy, French Chorale Of Praise, Away In A Manger, We Wish You A Merry Christmas

ReGeneration : Christmas In Velvet Vol 3 & 4

Review: Follow-up to previous release by the Regeneration troupe. As on Volume I and II, Derric Johnson's voice-orchestra performs sensational arrangements of carols such as 'Joy To The World,' 'Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town' and 'Deck The Halls.' Particularly lovely is 'Carol Of The Russian Children/The Sleigh,' popularized by the Singers Unlimited.

Songlist: Joy To The World, I'll Be Home For Christmas, Carol Of The Russian Children/ The Sleigh, Go Where I Send Thee, Silent Night, Let It Snow!, Jingle Bells, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, Hanukkah, The Christmas Song/ Chestnuts Roasting, Rejoice With Exceeding Great Joy, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town, Carol Of The Bells, Silver Bells, Christmas In The Air, Deck The Halls, It Came Upon A Midnight Clear, Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer, Some Children See Him

ReGeneration : Hymns In Velvet

Review: Velvet: a rich fabric. The harmonies of Regeneration: sumptuous, angelic outpourings of rejoicing, of which velvet is a most fitting adjective. Carrying on in the mode established by the best-selling "Christmas In Velvet" volumes one and two, the fourteen traditionals and hymns contained here (ten of which were released a few years ago in a now out-of-print recording entitled"Pure Silk"), are inspiring not only because of their thematic content of praise, but because of the arranging of Derric Johnson, the group's director. To study a Derric Johnson arrangement is to contemplate the canon of a master. Key to his style is his seamless blending of classical choral and jazz idioms that are fresh, yet easy to assimilate. What could be more uplifting than the gloriously ascending intervals of "More Than Wonderful," ending in an epic high note? The serene and resonant "Holy Ground" is set against a backdrop of plush oohs and aahs. The countermelodic texture of "Just As I Am" is engaging but never excessive. The men and women of Regeneration (some of whom moonlight as Walt Disney World's "Voices of Liberty"), could not be more pristine in their performance. Their control, phrasing and interpretation is textbook perfect. All in all, "Hymns in Velvet" is an exercise of pure enjoyment.

Songlist: Great Is Thy Faithfulness, Jesus, Lover of my Soul, Just a Little Talk With Jesus, Spirit of God, I Must Tell Jesus, A Mighty Fortress , I Walked Today Where Jesus Walked, O Love That Will Not Let Me Go, Just As I Am, It Is Well With My Soul, Go Down Moses, Holy Ground, Jesus Is His Name, More Than Wonderful

Robert Shaw : Absolute Heaven

Review: This is the second compilation recording to feature sacred choral classics conducted by Robert Shaw. The baroque era is represented by Vivaldi's Gloria and J.S. Bach's Magnificat; the classical and romantic periods include selections from Mozart's Requiem, and the Verdi and Berlioz Requiems; and the twentieth century is well-represented with selections from the Poulenc Mass in G Major, the Durufle Requiem, and Mahler's Symphony No. 8, the "Symphony of a Thousand." Operatic selections are included by composers Arrigo Boito (the "Prologue" from Mephistofele), and Pietro Mascagni (the "Regina coeli" from Cavalleria rusticana). Also contributing to the dramatic sense of contrast on this recording is the juxtapositioning of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus with the ethereal, a capella sounds of the Shaw Festival Singers, who are highlighted in "Bless the Lord, O my soul," from Rachmaninoff's Vespers; and in the "Agnus Dei" from the Poulenc Mass in G Major.

Songlist: Mefistofele: Prologue, Mass In G Major: Agnus Dei, Mass In C minor, K.427: Kyrie, Christ On The Mount of Olives: Hallelujah, Vespers: Bless The Lord, O My Soul, Requiem, Op. 9: Sanctus, Te Deum, Op. 103: Te Deum Laudamus, Gloria: Et In Terra Pax, Magnificat: Suscepit Israel, Requiem, Op 48: Pie Jesu, Requiem, Libera Me, Cavalleria Rusticana: Regina Coeli, Mass No. 2 In G Major:Benedictus, Requiem Op. 5: Rex Tremendae, Symphony No. 8: Finale

Robert Shaw : Faure / Durufle

Review: The Faure Requiem was begun in 1886 and finished in the first weeks of 1888. Unlike other requiems, this piece has no sense of doom or angst. It expresses no fear of death, but rather depicts the reaching for eternal happiness. Warm and comforting, this work is a rare gem in the French repertoire. Durufle's greatest known work was his Requiem written in 1947. At the time it was commissioned, Durufle was composing a suite for organ solo based on the Gregorian chants of the Mass for the Dead. It was this suite that was expanded and transformed to become the requiem. The insightful interpretation and superb performance of these requiems by Robert Shaw and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra & Chorus is unmatched. This release received a Grammy Award for Best Engineered Classical Recording.

Songlist: Faure Requiem (7 Movements), - Introit & Kyrie, - Offertory, - Sanctus, - Pie Jesu, - Agnus Dei, - Libera me, - In Paradisum, Durufle Requiem (9 Movements), - Introit, - Kyrie, - Domine Jesu Christe, - Sanctus, - Pie Jesu, - Agnus Dei, - Lux Aeterna, - Libera me, - In Paradisum

Robert Shaw : Gloria: Music of Praise & Inspiration

Review: Showcasing works from the preeminent composers of Western classical music, such as Schubert, Vivaldi and Bach, this recording is a compilation drawn from Robert Shaw's vast canon. Mr. Shaw, who recently died, was one of the most famous and recognized choral directors of modern day, and his association with the Atlanta Symphony and Chorus was a prolific one. These accompanied selections, on sacred and religious themes, are grand, dramatic and ornate. One of the most affecting is Beethoven's "Missa Solemnis: Gloria," which captures the intense emotion that heralded the beginning of the Romantic era.

Songlist: Gloria In Excelsis, Mass In B Minor: Sanctus, Messiah: And Suddenly Their Was The Angel-Glory To God, The Creation: Awake The Harp, Mass No. 2 In G Major: Gloria, Missa Solemnis: Gloria, Requim: Sanctus, Heavenly Light, Te Deum: Aeterna Fac, Vespers: Slava V Vyshnikh Bogu (Glory To God In The Highest), Requiem: Sanctus, Mass In G Major: Gloria, Alleluia, Mass: Sanctus, Magnificat

Robert Shaw : Grand & Glorious - Great Operatic Choruses

Review: Robert Shaw leads the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in some of opera's most beloved choruses. This assortment ranges from the immensely popular "Va pensiero" from Nabucco to the tragic end of Purcell's Dido and Aeneas. Other selections include "Regina Coeli" from Cavalleria Rusticana and the "Anvil Chorus" from Il Trovatore. These choruses provide comic relief, enhance the plot or give voice to the desire for freedom. With guest soloists, soprano Christine Brewer, tenor Karl Dent and bass Kevin Maynor, this incredible chorus gives first rate performances of the grand and glorious from the stage.

Robert Shaw : Great Choral Classics

Review: There is an abundance of great choral music in the world. This compilation by Robert Shaw leading the Atlanta Symphony and Choruses is some of the best, from the opening movement of J.S. Bach's Magnificat to the "Intaberna quando sumus" from Orff's Carmina Burana. These pieces are triumphant and glorious and as always beautifully performed by this highly acclaimed group of musicians. It is hard to pick the favorites among the best, but this is a good place to start.

Songlist: "Gloria all'Egitto" from Aida , "Agnus Dei" from Requiem , "Magnificat anima mea" from Magnificat , "In taberna quando sumus" from Carmina burana, II. Robert Shaw : Power and Majesty

Review: Robert Shaw's awards shelf had to be expanded to make room for the National Medal of Arts from Pres. Reagan, Musician of theYear by Musical America, the Theodore Thomas Award of the Conductor's Guild, a Gold Record, Britain's Gramophone Award, 13 Grammys, four ASCAP awards, the list goes on and on. Shaw began directing the Fred Waring Glee Club to radio fame, then his Collegiate Chorale, finally moving on to the Robert Shaw Chorale, whose tours and recordings brought him worldwide fame. He became music director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in 1967. "The Power" combines the orchestral power (as in heavily accompanied) of the Symphony with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus and the Robert Shaw Festival Singers to do justice to 17 monumental pieces by such heavies as Verdi, Durufle, Orff, Mozart, Borodin, Bach, Handel, Berlioz, Faure, Haydn and Rachmaninoff. Remember the drama and power of the "Hallelujah Chorus" from Handel's "Messiah?" It's here, and there's 16 others like it. Amazing!

Songlist: Dies irae (Giuseppe Verdi), Tuba Mirium, Pie Jesu (Maurice Durufle), O Fortuna (Carl Orff), Dies irae (Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart), Rex tremendae, Confutatis, Lacrimosa, Polovtsian Dances (Alexander Borodin), Missa: Kyrie eleison (Johann Sebastian Bach), Hallelujah Chorus (George Frideric Handel), The Shepherds Farewell (Hector Berlioz), Sanctus (Gabriel Faure), The Heavens are Telling (Franz Joseph Haydn), "Va, pensiero" (Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves) (Verdi), Nyne Otpushchayeshi (Sergei Rachmaninoff), Dies irae (Berlioz)

Robert Shaw : The Many Moods Of Christmas

Review: We don't need to recount Robert Shaw's credentials as a group leader and director of the Fred Waring Glee Club and The Robert Shaw Chorale, or his list of awards, Grammys, ASCAPs, etc. over his 50+ year career, do we? Good. So, if you were director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra & Chorus and recording a Christmas CD, what kind would it be? Powerful, monumental and classic of course! We have 18 mostly traditional carols here, "Good Christian Men, Rejoice," "Silent Night," "Patapan," "Fum Fum Fum," "March of the Kings," "Bring a Torch, Jeannette Isabella," "Angels We Have Heard On High," "The First Nowell," "I Saw Three Ships," "Deck The Halls," etc., along with the Latin hymn "O Sanctissima," Wesley-Mendelssohn's "Hark!," and Bach's "Break Forth, O Beauteous Heavenly Light." Robert Shaw Chamber Singers : Angels On High

Review: The more modern and esoteric of Shaw's Christmas recordings, featuring the "Ceremony Of Carols," a modern suite by Benjamin Britten, comprising 11 tracks, and highlighting two soloists and harp. The contemporary composer, Morten Lauridsen's "O Magnum Mysterium" is also included; its simple and graceful melody floats ethereally by. Biebl's "Ave Maria," with its distinctive major/minor tension, Praetorius' "Lo, How A Rose E'er Blooming," and Howell's "Sing Lullaby" are other gems, most of which are arranged by Shaw and Alice Parker. The sprightly "Allon, Gay Bergeres" and "While By My Sheep" suggest caroling from door-to-door, the crisp crunch of snow underfoot and rosy-cheeked smiles for all!

Songlist: O Come, Emmanuel, Alleluia, The First Nowell, The Carol Of The Birds, Allon, Gay Bergeres, A Hymn To The Virgin, O Magnum Mysterium, Rejoice and Sing, from "Christmas Oratorio", Ave Maria, What Is This Lovely Fragrance?, Lo, How A Rose E'er Blooming, Sing Lullaby, While By My Sheep, Break Forth, O Wondrous Heavenly Light, from "Christmas Oratorio", Heavenly Light, Adeste Fideles, Ceremony Of Carols

Robert Shaw Chamber Singers : Schubert, Songs For Male Chorus

Review: In addition to his many solo songs, Franz Schubert wrote about one hundred male quartets and choruses. These part songs, like their solo counterparts, use texts by the great poets, like Goethe and Schiller, and have equally beautiful melodies. The popularity of these pieces was due to the development of music making by the middle class. Small public concerts, given in taverns or peoples homes, were places that the songs would be performed. Schubert was often requested to compose these part-songs for the occasions. Among the all male songs is the gem "Standchen" which is scored for alto and male chorus with piano accompaniment. The men of the Robert Shaw Chamber Singers perform these rarely heard pieces with great beauty and lyricism. The songs on this CD are a cappella, with a few having guitar or piano accompaniment.

Songlist: Die Nacht, Die Nachtigall, Wehmuth, Der Gondelfahrer, Mondenschein, Nachthelle, Das Dorfchen, Die Einsiedelei, Sehnsucht, Grab Und Mond, Fruhlingsgesang, Liebe, Widerspruch, An Den Fruhling, La Pastorella, Standchen, Der Entfernten

Robert Shaw Chamber Singers : Songs Of Angels

Review: Twenty-nine carols arranged by Robert Shaw and Alice Parker, and sung by the forty-nine member Robert Shaw Chamber Singers. Many English, but some French, Spanish, Italian, German and the occasional American carol are included. In broad terms, carols were popular songs, and the original definition referred to a type of dance; remember, too, that Christmas was an adaptation of various pagan celebrations, an influence that can certainly be discerned in carols such as "Masters In This Hall," the sprightly rhythms of which are not meant to be listened to sitting down. Robert Shaw's various classical vocal ensembles are considered to be some of the finest in the world, and under his direction, earned many Grammy's and international acclaim.

Songlist: God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, Angels We Have Heard on High , O Come, O Come Emmanuel, How Unto Bethlehem?, The Boar's Head Carol, O Tannenbaum, Masters in This Hall, My Dancing Day, Away in a Manger, Good Christian Men, Rejoice, The Holly and the Ivy, Good King Wenceslas, Wassail Song, Bring a Torch, Jeannete, Isabella, Fum, Fum, Fum, Mary Had a Baby, Hacia Belen va un borrico, Christ Was Born on Christmas Day, March of the Kings, Coventry Carol, Deck the Halls, The Cherry Tree Carol, We Three Kings of Orient Are, Touro-louro-louro!, So Blest a Sight, I Saw Three Ships, What Child Is This?, Susanni, In the Bleak Midwinter

Robert Shaw Chorale : Handel: The Great Choruses From Messiah

Review: We hardly need to mention Robert Shaw's credentials as a group leader and director of the Fred Waring Glee Club, the RS Festival Singers, RS Chorale and RS Chamber Singers, his Grammys and ASCAPS and his 50-plus year legendary career in music. This is a digitally remastered reissue of a classic lp of one of some of the most beloved music of all time, the Great Choruses from Handel's Messiah. The piece is given to us in 17 parts, from "And the Glory of the Lord" and the famous "For Unto Us a Child Is Born" to "Their Sound Is Gone Out Into All Lands," "Hallelujah" and finishing with "Worthy Is The Lamb That Was Slain." Of course this CD is orchestrally accompanied, with harpsichord and organ, throughout. As with all the CDs associated with Robert Shaw that we carry in our catalog, "Great Choruses" is a powerful, wonderfully performed work of art!

Robert Shaw Chorus : Britten: War Requiem

Review: Only a conductor of Robert Shaw's experience could hope to shed new light on a score the composer himself had so convincingly presented on record. Shaw finds a meditative gentleness in the music that is new and touching, and imparts a distant, sad feeling to the climaxes that deepens their ambivalence. The solo singing is on a par with that of Britten's recording--the diction is in fact better--and the choral singing is suffused with Shaw's unique magic. Telarc's digital recording is a bona fide sonic spectacular.

Robert Shaw Chorus : Dvorak: Stabat Mater

Review: The late Robert Shaw, who died in January 1999, had a long and fruitful relationship with Telarc, spanning twenty years and producing 41 recordings, eleven of which have won Grammy Awards. The current recording is the final one to be made by the conductor. Included on the second disc is a spoken interview of Shaw made by National Public Radio's Martin Goldsmith, host of "Performance Today." The interview was made in November 1998, just after the recording sessions for the Dvorak Stabat Mater, and features Shaw discussing his career, this work, and the state of the choral art. Portions of the interview were originally broadcast over NPR on April 2, 1999. The Stabat Mater was written by Dvorak in direct response to personal and private grief when he began the work, in 1876, he and his wife had recently lost a baby daughter, who had lived only two days. Other work intervened requiring the composer to set the Stabat Mater aside, but he soon resumed it in 1877 after losing two more children in quick succession-a baby daughter to accidental poisoning, and his three-year-old son to smallpox. The work was premiered in Prague in 1880, by which time Dvorak had risen from obscurity and poverty to become an internationally known composer. In 1883, the London premiere of the Stabat Mater met with such success that Dvorak was invited to come to England to conduct the work. He did so, conducting an enormous orchestra and chorus in the Royal Albert Hall in 1884.

Songlist: Stabat Mater Dolorosa , Quis est homo, qui non fleret , Eja, Mater, Fons amoris, Fac, ut ardeat cor meum , Tui Nati vulernati , Fac me vere tecum flere , Virgo virginum praeclara , Fac, ut portem Christi mortem , Inflammatus et accensus, Quando corpus morietur , Robert Shaw Discusses Dvorak's Stabat Mater with Martin Goldsmith

Robert Shaw Chorus : Schubert: Mass No. 2 & Mass No. 6

Review: From America's greatest choral conductor, Robert Shaw, and his superbly trained Atlanta forces comes a recording of two settings of the Latin mass by Franz Schubert. Shaw and the Telarc recording team have won numerous Grammy Awards, they continue that tradition of excellence with Schubert: Mass No. 2 & Mass No. 6. In all, Schubert wrote six Masses over a period stretching from his school days to the end of his life. All but the last were written for specific performances in local churches, and all are practical works reflecting Viennese performance customs of the time. Mass No. 2 in G major was composed in 1815, when Schubert was 18 and just embarking on a teaching career. Simple and tuneful, it is a small-scaled work for chamber choir accompanied only by strings and organ. Soprano, tenor, and bass soloists contribute to the intimate beauty of the choral writing. The Mass must have gladdened the heart of his teacher, Antonio Salieri, who praised Schubert's first Mass with the words, "Franz, you are my pupil and you are going to do me proud." The product of a remarkable surge of music Schubert wrote in his final year, Mass No. 6 in E-flat major lay unperformed until a year after his death. It is basically a choral mass, as its five soloists (soprano, mezzo, two tenors, and bass) are used sparingly. The festive orchestra includes strings, timpani, and full winds except for tuba and flute. Its overall shape and construction follow traditional practice-more so than his preceding setting in A-flat. In harmonic language and details of text setting, however, we encounter a different Schubert, a Romantic who produced telling dramatic effect through his use of frankly pictorial writing and daring chromatic digressions.

Songlist: Mass No. 2, Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, Agnes Dei, Mass No. 6, Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, Agnes Dei

Robert Shaw Chorus : Verdi: Requiem

Review: Having given his lifetime experience and mastery to the great repertory of the choral literature, Robert Shaw addresses one of the greatest challenges of all-Verdi's greatest choral masterwork, the Requiem. Combining a succession of thrilling solo arias, duets and ensembles with some of the most inspiring writing for chorus, the great Italian master produced a unique tribute to the memory of one whom he regarded as a virtual saint: poet and novelist Alexander Manzoni. Balancing the devotional with the theatrical requires the utmost care, but care must also be taken to involve the listener in a continually unfolding drama. Robert Shaw, his expert singers, chorus, and orchestra, have achieved this. But there is more to offer on this superb album. Shaw has set down his interpretation of some of the best-known choruses from five of Verdi's major works - Macbeth, Don Carlo, Otello, Aida and especially, the well-loved Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves from Nabucco.

Lacrimosa, Offertory, Sanctus, Disc Two:, Agnus Dei , Lux aeterna, Libera me, 1. Libera me, 2. Dies irae, 3. Requiem aeternam, 4.
