National Lutheran Choir : While Angels Sing

Review: A professional choir from Minnesota, the Choir perform selections from a divergent literature. This is a seasonal recording, emphasizing classical compositions, not carols, and is subtitled "The Light Is Come"; loosely defined, the theme is the birth cycle of Christ. Works by Kodaly, Clausen, Poulenc, Bach, Christiansen and others are performed, with the exception of Dave Brubeck's "Gloria," a flamenco arrangement, and the recording's wild card. Several of the tracks are accompanied, such as "This Is The Christ," but with pristine and restrained orchestrations, lovely indeed. In keeping with the CD's seraphic motif, the choir's tone color is one of brilliance and purity.

Songlist: Restoration, Morning Star, In Darkest Night, Come, Awake, I Beheld Her, Magnificat, Tota Pulchra Es, A Spotless Rose, Now, O Come, My Soul's True Light, Et Incarnatus Est, A Christmas Carol, O Magnum Mysterium, Shining Stable In The Night, Maria Sat In Cattle Stall, While Angels Sing, Gloria, Born Today, Come, Return, And On That Day, Hush, My Dear, In Dulci Jubilo, Now All Poor, This Is The Christ, O Light Everlasting

New Orleans Children's Chorus : Looking Back and Looking Up

Review: "Looking Back and Looking Up" is a sumptuous, 2-CD collection by the three talented branches of the New Orleans Children's Chorus, the Youth Chorale, Chamber Ensemble and Concert Chorus, all directed by Cheryl Dupont, with piano accompaniment by Kevin Caparotta. The Chorus is delighted to celebrate their 25th season, in spite of a 4-month hiatus due to Hurricane Katrina. There are 52 selections here on the two discs, impressive not only for the number, but for the difficulty and maturity of the pieces and the quality of the performances by this veteran Chorus. Attempting to choose favorites is not easy, for instance, disk one begins with David Elliot's joyous "When I Sing," Mozart's wonderful "Laudate Dominum," and Leslie/Calvert's heartstring-tugging "Song for the Mira;" each of these is a stone winner. We absolutely enjoyed Andre Thomas' "Rockin' Jerusalem," Bela Bartok's "Don't Leave Me," Imant Raminsh's "Song of the Stars," John Rutter's "Gaelic Blessing," Jule Styne's "Never, Never Land" and Z. Randall Stroope's "Inscription of Hope." On disk 2, we find S. Hatfield's "Nkose Sikeleli/Freedom is Coming," Rupert Lang's "Spirit of the Child," Ella Fitzgerald's "A-Tisket, A-Tasket," Randall Thompson's "A Girl's Garden," Schubert's "Lebenslust," Valerie Shields' "Eliyahu Hanavi," Daniel Gawthrop's "Sing Me to Heaven" and pianist Caparotta's "May the Road Rise to Meet You." A beautiful, sublime collection from this outstanding American children's chorus!

Songlist: When I Sing, Laudate Dominum, Song for the Mira, Kyrie from Missa Brevis, Pie Jesu from Requiem, Rockin' Jerusalem, Lift Thine Eyes, Don't Leave Me, O Aula Nobilis, Cantate Domino, Good Ale, Hiney Ma Tov, Song of the Stars, Old McDoodle, Tantum Ergo, Winter Under Snow is Weary, My Heart's Friend, Noel Des Enfants, The Gift to be Simple, Gaelic Blessing, Winter Changes, Never, Never Land, Cape Breton Lullaby, When I Set Out for Lyoness, Inscription of Hope, Do I Not Love Thee, Neighbor's Chorus, The Lord Bless You and Keep You, Nkose Sikeleli/Freedom is Coming, Spirit of the Child, Ah! si mon moine voulait danser, A-Tisket, A-Tasket, The Kalanta of the New Year, I Have Had Singing, Tomorrow Shall be My Dancing Day, O Come Let Us Sing Unto the Lord, Prelude to Peace, Diary of Dickinson, A Girl's Garden, Fair Warning, With You, Lebenslust, Ereve Shel Shoshanim, J'ententds le Moulin, Land of the Silver Birch, You and the Song, Eliyahu Hanavi, Sanctus from Requiem, Sing Me to Heaven, Hamisha Asar, Dodi Li, May the Road Rise to Meet You

New Orleans Children's Chorus : Music Down In My Soul

Review: Cheryl Dupont is the Artistic Director of the three divisions of the NOCC, the Youth Chorale, Chamber Ensemble and Concert Chorus. The piano accompaniment for these 23 songs is provided by Kevin Caparotta. Some of our favorites are the title tune by the masterful Moses Hogan, Mark Patterson's "This Shall Be For Music," Bob Chilcott's "The Lily and the Rose" and "Be Simple Little Children," Cesar Franck's "Panis Angelicus, John Rutter's "Blow, Blow, Thou Winter Wind," Paul Basler's "Gloria from Missa Kenya," Nick Page's Thula S'Thandwa," Paul Simon's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and the Scottish Folk Song "Auld Lang Syne" by the combined choirs. Every cut here is wonderful, inspirational music from one of America's finest children's choruses!

New York Polyphony : endBeginning

Review: 'My end is my beginning, and my beginning my end' - with those words the four members of New York Polyphony end a programme which explores the themes of grief, loss and mortality. Apart from the closing paraphrase by Jackson Hill (b.1942) on Guillaume de Machaut's famous 14th century rondeau Ma fin... and two examples of plainsong, all works included on endBeginning, the ensemble's first disc on BIS, were composed by masters of the Franco-Flemish school of polyphony active in the first half of the 16th century. The music was partly used liturgically, for instance Brumel's Mass for the Dead, which incorporates the first known polyphonic setting of the text Dies irae, 'Day of Wrath' as its extensive centre piece. Similarly the Lamentations by Crecquillon, a setting which is possibly appearing on disc for the first time, would have been used in churches during Holy Week, with the destruction of Jerusalem as mourned by the prophet Jeremiah standing as a symbol of the Passion of Christ. The two Gregorian chants Libera me and In paradisum both form part of the Roman Catholic burial service, the first a prayer for the soul's delivery from eternal death and the second an evocation of the hereafter. Of a more subjective nature, the two texts Absalon fili mi ('Absalom, my son') and Tristitia obsedit me - Infelix ego ('Sadness has besieged me - Alas, wretch that I am') have moved their respective composers to settings of rare intensity. Formed in 2006, New York Polyphony is establishing a reputation as an exceptionally fine vocal chamber ensemble, and has been praised for a 'rich, natural sound that's larger and more complex than the sum of its parts'

Songlist: Missa pro defunctis; Libera me, Domine , Lamentationes Jeremae, Tristitia obsedit me - Infelix ego, Absalon fili mi; In paradisum, Ma fin est mon commencement

New York Polyphony : I Sing the Birth

Review: New York Polyphony is rapidly gaining a reputation as one of the finest new classical vocal ensembles. Fusing elegant vocalism with expert ensemble singing, its four male voices consistently deliver dynamic performances of music spanning nearly a millennium in a range of styles, combining historically-informed interpretive style with their own unique artistry. From the simplicity of plainchant to the dense chromaticism of contemporary works, the New York Polyphony sound is unified, energized and distinctive. The musical landscape traversed on this disc of music for the Advent and Christmas season is broad, from 12th century conductus to a 21st century carol, though the musical center is firmly polyphonic and rooted in the late Medieval world. The group is joined by a women's trio in several works written for more than four parts. The sound is clean and present, with appropriate resonance for this material. For the listener looking for a collection of contemplative Christmas music that steers clear of the most obvious selections and introduces intriguing new repertoire, as well as for the fan of early music vocal ensembles, this album has much to offer.

Songlist: Veni Redemptor gentium, Hodie Christus natus est, Hodie Christus natus est, Puer natus est nobis, Lully, lulla, thou little tiny child, Beata viscera, Ave Maria Mater Dei, Alma Redemptoris mater, The darkest midnight in December, The Fader of Heven, Vox in Rama, Vox in Rama, Vox in Rama, Away in a manger, Ave Maria, Coventry Carol, Ave Maria, Lullay, lullow, I saw a swete semly syght, Mervele noght, Josep, Nowell: Dieus wous garde, byewsser, Veni Redemptor gentium, O magnum mysterium, Ecce advenit dominator Dominus, Magi veniunt ab oriente, Nunc dimittis, Vox in Rama

New York Polyphony : Sing Thee Nowell

Review: The holiday season generally abounds with similar-sounding releases, but the year 2014 brought an unusually fresh crop including this release from the vocal quartet New York Polyphony, excellently recorded by BIS at a boychoir chapel in Princeton, New Jersey. The group follows the common procedure of including music from the Middle Ages to the present day, but they push the boundaries at each step with a distinctive sound that flirts with, but does not adopt, the textures made famous by the Swingle Singers. This has a revelatory effect in Philippe Verdelot's Gabriel Archangelus, a work that does not sound like much when dutifully sung by a cathedral choir. Many pieces are grouped by Christmas subtheme -- Annunciation, Epiphany, Advent, and Nativity -- and the program is cannily put together to show ideas refracted through the music of various periods. For many, though, the chief attraction will be the impeccably close harmonies of New York Polyphony, and that kind of sheer skill rarely coexists with such programming sophistication. An ideal gift for someone who likes a cappella, small group polyphony.

Songlist: Veni Emmanuel, Adam lay ybounden, Gabriel archangelus, Gabriel archangelus, There is no rose of swych vertu , There is no rose (based on the tune Hereford) , There is no rose, Nesciens mater, O pia virgo, Nowell: Out of your sleep, Nowell: Arise and wake, 5 Carols, Sleep Now, O Magnum Mysterium, Quem pastores laudavere, Quid petis, O Fili?, Un flambeau, Jeanette, Isabelle, Bethlehem Down, Magi veniunt, O Little Town of Bethlehem

New York Polyphony : Tudor City

Review: Classical vocal quartet New York Polyphony struck a chord with their 2007 Avie debut, I Sing The Birth (AV 2141). It was an Editor's Christmas Choice in BBC Music magazine, and Classic FM awarded it five stars. For their second release, the all-male foursome delivers their signature fusion of historically informed performances in a range of styles. Interspersed among sacred masterpieces of Tudor England are four new works by British-Norwegian composer Andrew Smith, adding a modern harmonic richness and complexity to the album. The result is a compelling synthesis of ancient and contemporary vocal music.

Songlist: Ave Verum Corpus, Gaude Virgo Mater Christi, Flos Regalis, Flos Regalis, O Come In One To Praise The Lord, Expend, O Lord, My Plant of Word, Surrexit Christus, Stella Caeli, Speciosa Facta Es, Audivi Vocem, Why Fum'th in Fight, To Mock Your Reign, Man Blest No Doubt, God Grant With Grace, Magnificat A 4, Magnificat A 4, In Pace

Norman Luboff Choir : Songs Of Christmas / Calypso Holiday

Review: Certainly one of our most unusual Christmas CD's on offer, these 1956/57 recordings are a blast of refreshment. The first 12 tracks, from "Calypso Holiday," are accompanied, sung in tribal languages as well as English, French and Spanish, and are guaranteed to cheer up anybody's holiday blues! Songs such as "Yellow Bird," "Pig Knuckles and Rice" and "Bamboo-Tamboo" are a wonderful break from the traditional carols, but lest you miss them, "Songs Of Christmas," features a series of medleys, all a cappella and arranged by Norman Luboff. The Norman Luboff Choir were quite popular in the '50's and '60's, too commercial to be considered classical, but nonetheless their renditions of the holiday chestnuts are first-rate.

Songlist: Calypso Carnival, The Proposal, Balance, Water, Yellow Bird, Dance De Limbo, Sound De Fire Alarm, Bamboo-Tamboo, Pig Knuckles And Rice, Like My Heart, Fisherman's Song, Dansez Calenda, Joy to the World / I Saw Three Ships / We Three Kings of Orient Are / O Little Town Of Bethlehem, What Child Is This? / Twelve of Christmas / Baloo Lammy, The Holly and the Ivy / A La Nanita Nana / Joseph Dearest, Joseph Mine / Whence Comes This Rush of Wings, The First Nowell / Wassail, Wassail All Over the Town / God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen / Hark! Norman Luboff Choir : Songs Of The World Vol 1& 2

Review: The Norman Luboff choir is one of the great choral folk/pop groups of all time, and "Songs" is one of those great 2-LPs on one CD compilations that give you so much great music for your money. First released in 1959, these 24 (all but one song accompanied) songs embrace the music of many countries, most of which are fresh to our ears today, but nonetheless smooth, rich and beautiful. The one a cappella tune, "Dear Fatherland, Farewell," is a nostalgic winner with bass harmonies to die for. Soloists William Reeve, Betty Mulliner and William Lee amaze us and break our hearts. Some of our favorites: "Lift a Glass to Friendship" from Poland, "Pepita" from Portugal, "Bamboo Flute" from China, "Cockles and Mussels" from Ireland, "The Lonely Birch Tree" from Russia, "Valencianita" from Venezuela - all are wonderful and touching. Highly recommended!

Songlist: Volume 1:, Aupres de Ma Blonde, Carmen, Carmela, Lift A Glass to Friendship, Bamboo Flute, Pepita, Cockles and Mussels, The Lonely Birch Tree, Annie Laurie, Valencianita, Beyond the Mountains, Go To Sleep, Volume 2:, Mangwani Impulele, Greensleeves, Vigolin, Dear Fatherland, Farewell, Cherry Blossom, Coconut and Banana, Lullaby of the Shepherd, Still, Still, Still, marianna, All Through the Night, Click Go the Shears, The Fountain, Elanoy

Norman Luboff Choir : Ticket To The Movies

Review: Here are 19 songs, all from the movies, all arranged and conducted by Norman Luboff, A true musical eclectic, Luboff was driven to render every piece with a painstaking exactitude and an arrangement that immediately defined it as a Luboff performance. His choir toured annually from from 1963 until Luboff's death in 1987, and recorded more than 75 albums. This perfectionism is clear on every cut of every Luboff album, of which four, from 1961-65, are represented here. "All the Things You Are," "It Had to Be You," "As Time Goes By" (which Sam played again in "Casablanca," but actually was from the 1931 musical "Everybody's Welcome"), the title tunes from "My Foolish Heart," "Days of Wine and Roses," "High Noon," "On Green Dolphin Street," "An Affair to Remember," "Ruby" (from "Ruby Gentry") and "Laura," the lovely "Unchained Melody," "I'll Get By," "The Song from Moulin Rouge" ("Where is Your Heart"), and Irving Berlin's wonderful "Remember." Luboff is an American master, and his choir is one of the most powerful vocal groups of all time. Sure, all songs are gently accompanied, but the focus is on the smooth-as-maple syrup harmonies. These songs unabashedly tug at our heartstrings and push every romantic and sentimental button, and all we can say is, "highly recommended!"

Songlist: All the Things You Are, My Foolish Heart, High Noon (Do Not Forsake Me), An Affair to Remember, Darling My Darling, As Time Goes By, Days of Wine and Roses, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo, Younger than Springtime, It's Magic, On Green Dolphin Street, It Had To Be You, Ruby, Stella By Starlight, I'll See You Again, Unchained Melody, Laura, I'll Get By (As Long As I Have You), The Song from "Moulin Rouge" (Where Is Your Heart?), Remember

Northwest Girlchoir : Inscription of Hope

Review: Over 100 members of the Girlchoir, directed by Rebecca Rottsolk, bring together this concert of songs and simple, elegant texts that celebrate the resiliency of the human spirit against great adversity. The essence of the CD comes from the first song, the words taken from a cellar wall where Jews were hiding from the Nazis in WWII: "I believe in the sun even when it is not shining and I believe in God even when God is silent." There are 3 songs from "I Never Saw Another Butterfly," a musical memorial to the 15,000 children who passed through the town of Teresienstadt on their way to Auschwitz. 14 songs, all lightly accompanied, that touch the heart from these talented young voices!

Notre Dame Glee Club : Beautiful Rain

Review: The Notre Dame Glee Club is a music tradition that began at the University in 1915. Since 1993, Daniel Stowe has led the Glee Club in world-wide tours with great success. Today, Glee Club repertoire is not just football songs, sea shanties and the alma mater theme. In recent years, the choir has been trimmed in numbers to 55 select singers, and their repertoire now focuses upon a wider range of styles: from German art songs, American spirituals, Russian Orthodox, Baroque and Renaissance sacred music, to Barbershop harmony and folk music from nations of the world. The Glee Club's versatility is showcased in the wide variety of genres on this disc.. The musicianship of the Glee Club is all the more remarkable when considering that the Glee Club is a volunteer ensemble, operating independently from music degree programs. Recorded in spring 2007, in the finely-tuned acoustic of Leighton Concert Hall in the newly-finished DiBartolo Performing Arts Center on the campus of University of Notre Dame.

Songlist: Rain, Rain, Beautiful Rain, Sweep Clean Mary, Daniel Saw the Stone, Prayer of the Children, Abendstanchen, Trinklied, Der Jager Abschied, Duh Tvoy blagiy, Slava v vishnih Bogu, Crucifixus, Domine, non sum dignus, Lamentations of Jeremaih, Down Among the Dead Men, Kpanlongo, Tancuj, Tancuj, Nicaragua, Nicaraguita, Whup! Notre Dame Glee Club : In Dulci Jubilo

Review: The 71-strong male voices of the NDGC presents this fine collection of Christmas musical landmarks in "the hope of reawakening that mystery and wonder" of the Christmas seasons of their childhood. A noble purpose, and beautifully realized, from the opening cut, the lovely title song, and a marvelous "Gloucestershire Wassail," Steven Sametz' "Noel," and "Lo How A Rose E'er Blooming to Handl's "O Magnum Mysterium," Monteverdi's "Hodie Christus natus est," a ringing "Riu, riu, chiu" and "Here We Come A Wassailing," this is as rich, smooth, melodic and harmonious as any Christmas collection we've heard. We particularly enjoyed the spiritual "Mary Had A Baby" and the joyous West Indian song "De Mornin' Come." One of the best of the year!

Review: Music & Carols for a Medieval Christmas. The music on this recording goes back to the very origins of musical composition. Pacific Boychoir : Benjamin Britten

Review: The most accomplished choristers of Oakland, California's highly-regarded Pacific Boychoir Academy are the Troubadors, who join with The Pacific Collegium, a professional chamber ensemble that combines exceptional vocalists and instrumentalists, to perform three of Benjamin Britten's favorite Christmas pieces. The dramatic, powerful 12-part "A Ceremony of Carols" was written in the middle of WWII, the simple and fetching "Hymn to the Virgin" has been a Christmas favorite since he wrote it while ill in bed at age 16; and the 7-part "A Boy Was Born," was a student exercise by Britten published in 1934 that deals with the nature of innocence and childhood in the Nativity story. Led by director Kevin Fox, the Troubadors handle this eclectic, often difficult material beautifully, and the Collegium, directed by Christopher Kula, adds strong instrumentals and vocals to the mix. This is a lovely, very different kind of Christmas collection of pieces by a master composer.

Songlist: Procession, Wolcum Yole, There Is No Rose, That Yonge Child, Balulalow, As Dew In Aprile, This Little Babe, Interlude, In Freezing Winter Night, Spring Carol, Deo Gracias, Recession, A Hymn To The Virgin, A Boy Was Born , Lullay Jesu, Herod, Jesu As Thou Art Our Saviour, The Three Kings, In The Bleak Mid-Winter, Noel

Pacific Boychoir : Cantate

Review: This wonderful CD features the Troubadors of the Pacific Boychoir singing works by J.S. Bach, W.A. Mozart, Isaac Posch and Felix Mendelssohn. In this ambitious project, the chorus sings Bach's Cantata BWV 150, Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich. With a small orchestra and the addition of tenors and basses, the choir performs this piece similarly to how it would have been done in Bach's time. The soprano solo "Doch bin und bleibe ich vergnugt" is skillfully sung by Julian Abelskamp. The rest of the recording is equally well performed and features motets by Mozart, Posch and Mendelssohn.

Songlist: Cantata BWV 150 (JS Bach 1685-1750):, I. Sinfonia, II. Chorus: "Nach dir,Herr, verlanget mich", III. Ciaconna. Chorus: "Meine Tage in dem Leiden", Sub tuum praesidium (WA Mozart 1756-1791), Ergo interest / Quaere superna (WA Mozart 1756-1791), Cantate Domino (Isaac Posch c.1585-1622/23), Mein glaubiges Herze from Cantata 68 (JS Bach), Surrexit pastor bonus (Felix Mendelssohn 1809-1847), I. Review: The elite Troubadors of Oakland's Pacific Boychoir Academy are joined by Continuum, a group of former boy choristers whose voices have changed, and soloist Jonathon Hampton, to sing this strong collection of 19 African-American spirituals, directed by Kevin Fox. Favorites are "Ain't Got Time to Die," "City Called Heaven," "Precious Lord" and "Wade in the Water," all of which features Hampton's smooth countertenor; "Over Yonder," which features soloist Jacob Wilson; "Deep River," "The Battle of Jericho" and "Hear My Prayer." There is some light accompaniment. The soloists contrast nicely with the Troubadors' sweet, high background vocals, particularly Hampton's rich leads. A special, beautifully performed collection!

Pacific International Chidren's Choir Festival : Fifth Anniversary Collection

Review: Since its debut in 1998, the Pacific International Children's Choir Festival has established itself as one of the finest events of its kind in the US. This is a double CD set, featuring a collection of performances fom festival years 1998 through 2001 on Disc 1 and highlights from PICCFEST 2002 on Disc 2. There are 19 live, accompanied, wonderful, spirited songs on Disc 1, by some of the best children's choirs we've heard: from "Panis Angelicus," by the Phoenix Boys Choir and "Jabberwocky," by the Seattle Children's Chorus, to "On suuri sun rantas autius" by the Surrey Children's Choir and "It Don't Mean a Thing" by the Youth Choir of Central Oregon--it's all pure, sweet stuff. Disc 2, from 2002, features 13 live cuts by 13 different groups, from Indianapolis Children's Choir Kantorei, Northwest Girlchoir Vivace Choir and Pacific Chorale Children's Chorus to the Piedmont Choirs Concert Choir, the Portland Symphonic Girlchoir (one of our favorites), and Young Voices of Colorado--there's not a bad cut here. This is a real feel-good CD on many levels. Though all accompanied, the focus is on the voices of the children, which are incredible! Recommended.

Pacific Mozart Ensemble : Bernstein's Mass

Review: PME recorded Bernstein's Mass with Kent Nagano and the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester in Berlin. The recording received a Grammy nomination in 2005 for Best Choral Performance. The work calls for a "Street Chorus" that is able to perform such American musical styles as jazz, blues and rock. Since PME has long been known for being able to do the crossover between "classical" and other forms, Nagano decided that for his recording PME had to be hired and brought to Berlin. Over forty singers went for a week of recording sessions and concerts. In addition to singing the choral parts, PME supplied twenty soloists. Also heard on the recording is the Rundfunkchor Berlin and the Staats- und Domchor Berlin, with whom we share the nomination. The Mass was commissioned in 1971 by Jacqueline Kennedy for the opening of the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. Ours is the first recording of the piece since the original was conducted by Bernstein.

Songlist: Antiphon: "Kyrie eleison", Hymn and Psalm: A simple song, Responsory: "Alleluia", Prefatory Prayers, Thrice - Triple Canon: Dominus vobiscum, In nomine Patris, Prayer for the Congregation, Epiphany, Confiteor, Trope: "I don't know", Trope: "Easy", Meditation No. 1, Gloria tibi, Gloria in excelsis, Trope: "Half of the People", Trope: "Thank you", Meditation No. 2, Epistle "The Word of Lord", Gospel-Sermon "God said", Credo in unum Deum, Trope: "Non Credo", Trope: "Hurry", World Without End, Trope: "I Believe in God", Meditation No. 3 (De profundis, part 1), Offertory (De profundis, part 2), "Our father...", Trope: "I Go On", Sanctus "Holy! Review: Since its founding twenty years ago, Berkeley-based PME has grown to fill an important role in the cultural life of the Bay Area, presenting courageous and innovative programs of many works that have never been performed in concert settings. PME provides the opportunity for composers to collaborate with a professional chorus in performances of new or experimental work. In addition, PME stages live performances of works previously heard only on recordings. Founding director Richard Grant has directed the Ensemble in more than 200 concerts, and led the Ensemble on three European concert tours, presenting innovative programs from all periods and styles of music. Grant has has established a reputation for programming the current work of the most important contemporary composers, such as John Adams, Meredith Monk, David Lang and Philip Glass. But their repertoire also includes, of course, Christian sacred works by Mozart, Poulenc and Stravinsky. "Classics Live" focuses on this music. The first nine songs are a cappella, and this is a live recording. Barber's "Agnus Dei," "Ave Marias" by Biebl, Bruckner and Stravinski, Stravinski's "Pater Noster" and "Credo," Lotti's "Crucifixus," Durufle's "Tota Pulchra Es" and Poulenc's "Quatre Petites Prieres De Francois D'Assisse, No. 3." The last eight movements are parts of Durufle's moving "Requiem," accompanied by organ and cello. The soaring voices of this 64-strong mixed chorus take us to another time and space, a place of worship and angels. Truly beautiful.

Songlist: Agnus Dei , Ave Maria, Ave Maria , Pater Noster, Credo, Ave Maria, Crucifixus , Tota Pulchra Es, Quatre Petites De St. Francois d'Assise, Requiem , Introit & Kyrie, Domine Jesu, Sanctus, Pie Jesu, Agnus Dei , Lux aeterna, Linera me, In Paradisum

Peninsula Women's Chorus : Carols and Lullabies

Review: The 61-strong Peninsula Women's Chorus was established in 1966, and has been under the direction of Dr. Patricia Hennings since 1975, and the Christmas CD "Carols" is their fourth CD. The first 10 songs are a marvelous group called "Carols and Lullabies, Christmas in the Southwest" by Conrad Susa. A friend of Susa's showed him a collection of traditional Spanish carols he had sung as a boy in Arizona, and Susa put them together to form a narrative. combining homey, artful simplicity with Renaissance music, Songs like "Alegria" and the Andalusian song "Chiquirriquitin," with their lilting, dancing marimbas, and the lovely "A La Nanita Nana," are the gems of the CD. The second half of the CD takes us more in the direction of the sacred (Karai's "Hodie Christus natus est" and Missa Brevis' "Kyrie," "Sanctus" and "Agnus Dei"). Throw in "The Carol of the Rose," "Alleluia" and others, and you have a surprising, delightful Christmas CD!

Songlist: Oh, mi Belen!, El Desembre Congelat, Alegria, A la Nanita Nan, Las Posadas, Campana sobre Campana, En Belen Tocan a Fuefgo, El Noi de la Mare, Chiquirriquitin, El Rorro, Hodie Christus natus est, Missa Brevis, -Kyrie, -Sanctus, -Agnus Dei , Two selections from The Place of the Blest, -The Carol of the Rose, -Alleliuia, O Regem coeli, Christmas Intrada

Peninsula Women's Chorus : Earth Tones

Review: The sound of wind and water, the Sierra Nevada mountain range-late PWC artistic director Patricia Farris Hennings had a love for these things, and envisioned producing a CD of 20th century music that would transport the listener and inspire the soul. That CD is Earthtones, a musical journey through both nature and spirituality. Opening with Libby Larsen's soaring "Psalm 121," commissioned by the Palo Alto, CA-based PWC, Gwyneth Walker's "I Thank You God," Hildegar von Bingen's beautiful "O viridissima virga," Ramona Luengen's joyous "Celebremus," H. Garrett Phillips' dramatic "Odysseus and the Sirens," Lojze Lebic's rhythmic "Urok," the fast-moving "Mouth Music," the traditional South African song "Nginani Na," and the lovely folk song "Shenandoah." 13 songs, some with light accompaniment and percussion. The PWC is one of our favorite women's choruses, and the perfectly recorded "Earthtones" is a wonderful tribute to their beloved director from 1975 to her passing in 2001.

Songlist: Psalm 121 , I Thank You God , O viridissima virga, O viridissima virga , Celebremus, Odysseus and the Sirens, Viriditas, I Just Lightning , Urok , Mouth Music , Tjak! , Nginani Na , Shenandoah

Peninsula Women's Chorus : Nature Pictures

Review: On this recording, the PWC celebrates a close relationship with prominent Estonian composer, Veljo Tormis. Influenced by his deep conviction that ancient song traditions reflect a close connection to nature, the prolific Tormis gives us the four seasons in 36 miniatures of intense choral imagery in his evocative song cycles, Looduspildid (Nature Pictures). We are proud to present the first American recording of this cycle! This eclectic recording continues the theme with Karl Korte's "Spring", Chen Yi's "Looking at the Sea" and Samuel Barber's "To be Sung on the Water." Also included are Edward Elgar's "The Snow" and Kenneth Leslie's lovely "Cape Breton Lullaby," a PWC favorite.
