Musae San Francisco : Five

Review: In 2008-2009, celebrating its fifth year as one of the San Francisco Bay Area's premier women's vocal ensembles, 12-voice Musae presented its first ever Meet the Composer event, premiered works composed especially for them, hosted a grand party/fundraiser at the City Club, brought its annual December and May concerts to San Francisco, Berkeley and Tiburon, and recorded and released "five!" The ensemble describes its mission and vision as offering "a new experience of women's voices by combining musical artistry with an innovative and generous approach to performance." The 14 well-chosen cuts here begin and end with a soaring 12th Century chant by Hildegard von Bingen, "Karitas Habundat," there's Allister MacGillivray's lovely ballad "Song for the Mira," the heart-tugging Irish anthem "Danny Boy," and some wonderfully light and jazzy (and accompanied) renditions of "Mas Que Nada," "Canto de Ossanha," "Tempo de Amor" and "O Tico-Tico No Fuba." Next we have Graham Mayer's haunting, dissonant "When I Have Fears That I May Cease to Be," Princess Lili'uokalani's lovely "Ahe Lau Makani," Rene Clausen's powerful "Set Me as a Seal," Brian Holmes' soaring affirmation "I Shall Keep Singing" and Ryan James Brandau's beautiful "An Irish Blessing." Musae simply touches and inspires us with their "heartfelt and adventurous music." Enjoy!

Songlist: Karitas Habundat, Song for the Mira, Danny Boy, Mas Que Nada, Canto De Ossanha, Tempo De Amor, Tutu Maramba, O Tico-Tico No Fuba, When I Have Fears That I May Cease To Be, Ahe Lau Makani, Set Me As A Seal, I Shall Keep Singing!, An Irish Blessing

Musae San Francisco : From Argentina to Appalachia

Review: Fifteen-strong San Francisco-based women's vocal ensemble Musae takes its name from the classic nine muses of Greek mythology, the original "ladies of song." Since its founding in 2004 Musae has performed its diverse and accessible repertoire at venues throughout the Bay Area, and has gained a reputation for stretching the boundaries of traditional repertoire for women's voices. Performing largely without a conductor, Musae is a musical collective where each singer may sing a range of vocal parts. "From Argentina to Appalachia" is Musae's impressive debut album, which features music from North America, Venezuela, Mexico, Argentina and Brazil. There are 11 songs here, "Selections from Como Tu," the bright, rhythmic, drum-accompanied "Mahk Jhi," "Selections from Como Tu," the soaring "Bright Morning Stars," the poignant traditional gem "Queen Jane," the lively "Las Amarillas," the heartbreaking love song "Te Quiero," the spiritual "There is a Balm in Gilead," the powerful "Salmo 150," the lovely "Duerme Negrito," the gorgeous, piano accompanied "Homeward Bound," the joyous "Hark I Hear the Harps Eternal" and finishing with the short but sweet "Coda." "Argentina to Appalachia" is simply amazing and beautiful from beginning to end!

Songlist: Selections From Como Tu, Makh Jhi, Bright Morning Stars, Queen Jane, Las Amarillas, Te Quiero, There is a Balm in Gilead, Salmo 150, Duerme Negrito, Homeward Bound, Hark, I Hear the Harps Eternal

Musae San Francisco : Lyric Journey

Review: Eight members of Talented Bay Area 9-man a cappella ensemble wowed the sellout crowd recently at the Harmony Sweeps Regional at SF's Palace of Fine Arts, and their finely-crafted harmonies are well in evidence on the 21 songs of "Lyric Journey." Beginning with the R. Vaughn Williams-arranged "Bushes & Briars" and Michael McGlynn's "Dulaman," and finishing with three spirituals, the beautiful "Deep River," "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" and "Ride the Chariot," "Lyric" is a musical smorgasbord of tasty short, wonderfully-harmonic cuts. Favorites also include 3 songs sung in German, "In einem kuhlen Grunde," "Du, du liegst mi rim Herzen" and "Till Osterland;" the Swedish folk song "Aftonen," the Aaron Copland-arranged "The Little Horses," Daniel Gawthrop's "Sing Me To Heaven," Kirke Mecham's "Blow Ye the Trumpet," Manuel Sanchez Acosta's "Paraiso Sonado," and the joyous folk song "Vive L'Amour," arranged by Robert Shaw & Alice Parker. "Lyric Journey" is a treat from beginning to end, and all the words are there in the extensive, nicely-printed liner notes.

Songlist: Bushes & Briars, Dulaman, Linden Lea, Suo-Gan, Down Among the Dead Men, Notre Pere, Tebe poyem, In einem Kuhlen Grunde, Du, du leiegst mir im Herzen, Zure begiak, Till Osterland, Im Herbst, The Little Horses, Blow ye the Trumpet, Sing Me to Heaven, Paraiso Sonado, Na Bahia Tem..., Vive L'Amour, Deep River, Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, Ride The Chariot

MUSE - Cincinnati's Women's Choir : Growing Into Our Roots

Review: Fifty Six-strong MUSE is a women's choir dedicated to musical excellence and social change. Believing that diversity is strength, they are feminist women of varied ages, races and ethnicities, with a range of life experiences, political interests and musical abilities. Heterosexual, lesbian and bisexual, these are women loving women united in song, seeking out pieces composed by women, songs that enhance women's voices, and a concert experience that entertains, inspires, motivates, heals and creates a spirit of community in their audience. Some of our favorites of these 20 songs were commissioned by MUSE, Holly Near's "Foolish Notion" and "I Ain't Afraid" (with the spot-on refrain about religious fundamentalism, "I ain't afraid of your praying, I'm afraid of what you do in the name of your god"), Therese Edell's "Emma," and Sweet Honey in the Rock's Beatrice Johnson Reagon's "Greed" (from "Anybody Here"). Other favorites are "Step By Step," "Three Walking Songs," Connie Kaldor's "Mother's Prayer," Jennifer Stasack's "Wage Peace," Daniel Galay's "Mayim Maya" and "Emily Remembers" by Shirley Eikhard. Also wonderful are George Gershwin's "S'Wonderful," Duke Ellington's "It Don't Mean A Thing" and Ysaye Maria Barnwell's lovely a cappella "Wanting Memories." Extensive to light accompaniment on most songs. "Growing" is a powerful, thought-provoking, inspirational CD that touches us on many levels!

Songlist: Wanting Memories, Duerme Negrito, Foolish Notion, I Ain't Afraid, Imagine My Suprise, S'Wonderful, The Summer Day, Emma, Go Down Moses, Greed, Step By Step, Three Waulking Songs, Mother's Prayer, Wage Peace, Mayim Maya, It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing), Sayitshaya and Vulani Amasango, Song of the Exile, Emily Remembers, I Feel Like Going On

Musikanten : Sacred Choral Music of Robert Evett

Review: Robert Evett (1922-1975) was a highly esteemed American composer who was a major contributor to the cultural life of Washington, DC. A student of Roy Harris and Vincent Persichetti, Evett was nominated for Pulitzer prizes not only in music but also for his literary contributions: he was critic and editor for the New Republic, Atlantic Monthly and Washington Star. Evett composed in many genres, including orchestral and chamber music. His devout and personal choral pieces for the Catholic liturgy are undiscovered gems that deserve a wide hearing, not just on Sundays. The works on this disc, some a cappella, some with organ accompaniment, span music for Christmas and Lent, as well as the daily offices of Prime, Vespers and Compline. Masterfully sung by the 19 voices of Musikanten, the oldest choral chamber ensemble in the nation's capital, the music is given sublime interpretations in the warm environment of the Bradley Hills Presbyterian Church, Bethesda, MD. Conductor and founder of the group, Kerry Krebill, directs the expressive and precise performances that led Musikanten's previous CD to be nominated Choral CD of the Year by Chorus! Magazine.

Songlist: Prime, What An Attractive Thing Is Judgment, Propers for the Second Sunday in Lent, Propers for the First Mass of Christmas, Vespers, Four Marian Antiphons, Compline

National Lutheran Choir : A New Song

Review: The professional choral musicians of the National Lutheran Choir, selected by auditions held each May, are drawn from a 200-mile radius of Minneapolis/St. Paul for weekly rehearsals, and they represent the various Lutheran Church colleges and universities who have provided their undergraduate musical education. They perform literature from the entire spectrum of sacred choral works, all a cappella. A New Song, conducted by Larry L. Fleming, "A New Song" is an eclectic, varied collection of sacred music not often heard or performed. Richard Feliciano's dramatic and brooding "I Will Sing to the Lord" and "My Friend Had a Vineyard" set the tone for the collection, as does Eskil Hemberg's dissonant, eclectic "Signpost I." Darius Milhard's "Psalm 150" soars and surprises, Samuel Berber's "Lamb of God," George Oldroyd's "Prayer to Jesus," Durufle's "Ubi Caritas," Mark Gresham's "Set Me a Seal" and Kenneth Jennings' "Spirit of God" are sweet and lovely; Igor Stravinski's "The Dove Descending," Edmund Rubra's "Hymne to God" and Normand Lockwood's "Inscription from the Catacombs" have hauntingly dissonant harmonies. Each of these is a difficult-to-perform, rarely-heard gem, beautifully done by one of the world's most respected Christian choirs.

Songlist: I Will Sing To The Lord , My Friend Had A Vineyard, Jerusalem, Signpost I, Sixty-Seventh Psalm, Psalm 150, Thee Will I love , Priere, Lamb Of God , Prayer To Jesus , Ubi Caritas, Whither Shall I Go , O Vos Omnes, The Dove Descending , Sprirt Of God , Set Me As A Seal, Hymn To God, Inscription From The Catacombs, Our Father

National Lutheran Choir : Hymns We Love to Sing, Vol. II

Review: Artistic Director David Cherwien, conductor, organist and pianist, leads the Minneapolis, MN-based National Lutheran Choir in this live, organ and piano-accompanied collection of 13 joyous hymns. We are clearly invited to sing this triumphant music along with the Choir, as the liner notes feature the lyrics of all the songs in unusually large type; with very little about the size, history or details about the Choir or Director Cherwein. It's all about the music, about the power and faith of this great American Choir. Some favorites are "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee," "Angels We Have Heard on High," "Down in the River to Pray," "Steal Away," "Standin' in the Need of Prayer," "When Peace Like A River" and "Holy God, We Praise Your Name." A quote on the back of the liner notes says in part, "Joyful music leads us sunward. In the triumph song of life. Stars and angels sing around thee, Center of unbroken praise" "Hymns We Love to Sing, Vol. II" is by a wonderful Choir that loves to sing joyous praises to God, and they invite us to join them!

Songlist: Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee, The King Of Love My Shepherd Is, Angels We Have Heard On High, Down In The River To Pray, O Sacred Head, Now Wounded, Alleluia! Christ Is Arisen, Steal Away, O Blessed Spring, Standin' In The Need Of Prayer, You Are Holy, I Want Jesus To Walk With Me, When Peace Like A River, Holy God, We Praise Your Name

National Lutheran Choir : Soul

Review: "Soul" is a wonderful collection of Folk and Gospel Hymns and Spiritual Songs performed by Minneapolis/St. Paul's great professional choir. Conductor Larry L. Fleming arranges many of these tunes, and contributes one of his own compositions, the lovely, upbeat "Go and Tell John." "Three About Jesus:" "Every Time I Think About Jesus," "Give Me Jesus" and "Ride On, King Jesus" are particularly fine, as is the Paul Christiansen-arranged "My Song in the Night." The rousing spirituals "Saints Bound for Heaven" and "In That Great Getting' Up Mornin'" are marvelous. The final piece, the 9-part medley "River Suite," (piano accompanied and featuring outstanding vocalist Tom Tipton) is incredible enough by itself to gain our recommendation for "Soul." Another inspiring, finely-crafted winner from one of America's finest choirs!

National Lutheran Choir : While Angels Sing

Review: A professional choir from Minnesota, the Choir perform selections from a divergent literature. This is a seasonal recording, emphasizing classical compositions, not carols, and is subtitled "The Light Is Come"; loosely defined, the theme is the birth cycle of Christ. Works by Kodaly, Clausen, Poulenc, Bach, Christiansen and others are performed, with the exception of Dave Brubeck's "Gloria," a flamenco arrangement, and the recording's wild card. Several of the tracks are accompanied, such as "This Is The Christ," but with pristine and restrained orchestrations, lovely indeed. In keeping with the CD's seraphic motif, the choir's tone color is one of brilliance and purity.

Songlist: Restoration, Morning Star, In Darkest Night, Come, Awake, I Beheld Her, Magnificat, Tota Pulchra Es, A Spotless Rose, Now, O Come, My Soul's True Light, Et Incarnatus Est, A Christmas Carol, O Magnum Mysterium, Shining Stable In The Night, Maria Sat In Cattle Stall, While Angels Sing, Gloria, Born Today, Come, Return, And On That Day, Hush, My Dear, In Dulci Jubilo, Now All Poor, This Is The Christ, O Light Everlasting

Nebraska Children's Choir : Magnificat

Review: If you've heard this choir before, you know what to expect here: lustrous ensemble sound, crisp, clear, clean articulation, irresistible rhythmic energy, keen intonation, and impressive command of some very challenging music. New Orleans Children's Chorus : Looking Back and Looking Up

Review: "Looking Back and Looking Up" is a sumptuous, 2-CD collection by the three talented branches of the New Orleans Children's Chorus, the Youth Chorale, Chamber Ensemble and Concert Chorus, all directed by Cheryl Dupont, with piano accompaniment by Kevin Caparotta. The Chorus is delighted to celebrate their 25th season, in spite of a 4-month hiatus due to Hurricane Katrina. There are 52 selections here on the two discs, impressive not only for the number, but for the difficulty and maturity of the pieces and the quality of the performances by this veteran Chorus. Attempting to choose favorites is not easy, for instance, disk one begins with David Elliot's joyous "When I Sing," Mozart's wonderful "Laudate Dominum," and Leslie/Calvert's heartstring-tugging "Song for the Mira;" each of these is a stone winner. We absolutely enjoyed Andre Thomas' "Rockin' Jerusalem," Bela Bartok's "Don't Leave Me," Imant Raminsh's "Song of the Stars," John Rutter's "Gaelic Blessing," Jule Styne's "Never, Never Land" and Z. Randall Stroope's "Inscription of Hope." On disk 2, we find S. Hatfield's "Nkose Sikeleli/Freedom is Coming," Rupert Lang's "Spirit of the Child," Ella Fitzgerald's "A-Tisket, A-Tasket," Randall Thompson's "A Girl's Garden," Schubert's "Lebenslust," Valerie Shields' "Eliyahu Hanavi," Daniel Gawthrop's "Sing Me to Heaven" and pianist Caparotta's "May the Road Rise to Meet You." A beautiful, sublime collection from this outstanding American children's chorus!

Songlist: When I Sing, Laudate Dominum, Song for the Mira, Kyrie from Missa Brevis, Pie Jesu from Requiem, Rockin' Jerusalem, Lift Thine Eyes, Don't Leave Me, O Aula Nobilis, Cantate Domino, Good Ale, Hiney Ma Tov, Song of the Stars, Old McDoodle, Tantum Ergo, Winter Under Snow is Weary, My Heart's Friend, Noel Des Enfants, The Gift to be Simple, Gaelic Blessing, Winter Changes, Never, Never Land, Cape Breton Lullaby, When I Set Out for Lyoness, Inscription of Hope, Do I Not Love Thee, Neighbor's Chorus, The Lord Bless You and Keep You, Nkose Sikeleli/Freedom is Coming, Spirit of the Child, Ah! si mon moine voulait danser, A-Tisket, A-Tasket, The Kalanta of the New Year, I Have Had Singing, Tomorrow Shall be My Dancing Day, O Come Let Us Sing Unto the Lord, Prelude to Peace, Diary of Dickinson, A Girl's Garden, Fair Warning, With You, Lebenslust, Ereve Shel Shoshanim, J'ententds le Moulin, Land of the Silver Birch, You and the Song, Eliyahu Hanavi, Sanctus from Requiem, Sing Me to Heaven, Hamisha Asar, Dodi Li, May the Road Rise to Meet You

Review: Cheryl Dupont is the Artistic Director of the three divisions of the NOCC, the Youth Chorale, Chamber Ensemble and Concert Chorus. The piano accompaniment for these 23 songs is provided by Kevin Caparotta. New York Polyphony : endBeginning

Review: 'My end is my beginning, and my beginning my end' - with those words the four members of New York Polyphony end a programme which explores the themes of grief, loss and mortality. Apart from the closing paraphrase by Jackson Hill (b.1942) on Guillaume de Machaut's famous 14th century rondeau Ma fin... and two examples of plainsong, all works included on endBeginning, the ensemble's first disc on BIS, were composed by masters of the Franco-Flemish school of polyphony active in the first half of the 16th century. The music was partly used liturgically, for instance Brumel's Mass for the Dead, which incorporates the first known polyphonic setting of the text Dies irae, 'Day of Wrath' as its extensive centre piece. Similarly the Lamentations by Crecquillon, a setting which is possibly appearing on disc for the first time, would have been used in churches during Holy Week, with the destruction of Jerusalem as mourned by the prophet Jeremiah standing as a symbol of the Passion of Christ. The two Gregorian chants Libera me and In paradisum both form part of the Roman Catholic burial service, the first a prayer for the soul's delivery from eternal death and the second an evocation of the hereafter. Of a more subjective nature, the two texts Absalon fili mi ('Absalom, my son') and Tristitia obsedit me - Infelix ego ('Sadness has besieged me - Alas, wretch that I am') have moved their respective composers to settings of rare intensity. Formed in 2006, New York Polyphony is establishing a reputation as an exceptionally fine vocal chamber ensemble, and has been praised for a 'rich, natural sound that's larger and more complex than the sum of its parts'

Songlist: Missa pro defunctis; Libera me, Domine , Lamentationes Jeremae, Tristitia obsedit me - Infelix ego, Absalon fili mi; In paradisum, Ma fin est mon commencement

New York Polyphony : Sing Thee Nowell

Review: The holiday season generally abounds with similar-sounding releases, but the year 2014 brought an unusually fresh crop including this release from the vocal quartet New York Polyphony, excellently recorded by BIS at a boychoir chapel in Princeton, New Jersey. The group follows the common procedure of including music from the Middle Ages to the present day, but they push the boundaries at each step with a distinctive sound that flirts with, but does not adopt, the textures made famous by the Swingle Singers. This has a revelatory effect in Philippe Verdelot's Gabriel Archangelus, a work that does not sound like much when dutifully sung by a cathedral choir. Many pieces are grouped by Christmas subtheme -- Annunciation, Epiphany, Advent, and Nativity -- and the program is cannily put together to show ideas refracted through the music of various periods. For many, though, the chief attraction will be the impeccably close harmonies of New York Polyphony, and that kind of sheer skill rarely coexists with such programming sophistication. An ideal gift for someone who likes a cappella, small group polyphony.

Songlist: Veni Emmanuel, Adam lay ybounden, Gabriel archangelus, Gabriel archangelus, There is no rose of swych vertu , There is no rose (based on the tune Hereford) , There is no rose, Nesciens mater, O pia virgo, Nowell: Out of your sleep, Nowell: Arise and wake, 5 Carols, Sleep Now, O Magnum Mysterium, Quem pastores laudavere, Quid petis, O Fili?, Un flambeau, Jeanette, Isabelle, Bethlehem Down, Magi veniunt, O Little Town of Bethlehem

New York Polyphony : Tudor City

Review: Classical vocal quartet New York Polyphony struck a chord with their 2007 Avie debut, I Sing The Birth (AV 2141). It was an Editor's Christmas Choice in BBC Music magazine, and Classic FM awarded it five stars. For their second release, the all-male foursome delivers their signature fusion of historically informed performances in a range of styles. Interspersed among sacred masterpieces of Tudor England are four new works by British-Norwegian composer Andrew Smith, adding a modern harmonic richness and complexity to the album. The result is a compelling synthesis of ancient and contemporary vocal music.

Songlist: Ave Verum Corpus, Gaude Virgo Mater Christi, Flos Regalis, Flos Regalis, O Come In One To Praise The Lord, Expend, O Lord, My Plant of Word, Surrexit Christus, Stella Caeli, Speciosa Facta Es, Audivi Vocem, Why Fum'th in Fight, To Mock Your Reign, Man Blest No Doubt, God Grant With Grace, Magnificat A 4, Magnificat A 4, In Pace

Norman Luboff Choir : Songs Of Christmas / Calypso Holiday

Review: Certainly one of our most unusual Christmas CD's on offer, these 1956/57 recordings are a blast of refreshment. The first 12 tracks, from "Calypso Holiday," are accompanied, sung in tribal languages as well as English, French and Spanish, and are guaranteed to cheer up anybody's holiday blues! Songs such as "Yellow Bird," "Pig Knuckles and Rice" and "Bamboo-Tamboo" are a wonderful break from the traditional carols, but lest you miss them, "Songs Of Christmas," features a series of medleys, all a cappella and arranged by Norman Luboff. The Norman Luboff Choir were quite popular in the '50's and '60's, too commercial to be considered classical, but nonetheless their renditions of the holiday chestnuts are first-rate.

Songlist: Calypso Carnival, The Proposal, Balance, Water, Yellow Bird, Dance De Limbo, Sound De Fire Alarm, Bamboo-Tamboo, Pig Knuckles And Rice, Like My Heart, Fisherman's Song, Dansez Calenda, Joy to the World / I Saw Three Ships / We Three Kings of Orient Are / O Little Town Of Bethlehem, What Child Is This? / Twelve of Christmas / Baloo Lammy, The Holly and the Ivy / A La Nanita Nana / Joseph Dearest, Joseph Mine / Whence Comes This Rush of Wings, The First Nowell / Wassail, Wassail All Over the Town / God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen / Hark! Norman Luboff Choir : Songs Of The World Vol 1& 2

Review: The Norman Luboff choir is one of the great choral folk/pop groups of all time, and "Songs" is one of those great 2-LPs on one CD compilations that give you so much great music for your money. First released in 1959, these 24 (all but one song accompanied) songs embrace the music of many countries, most of which are fresh to our ears today, but nonetheless smooth, rich and beautiful. The one a cappella tune, "Dear Fatherland, Farewell," is a nostalgic winner with bass harmonies to die for. Soloists William Reeve, Betty Mulliner and William Lee amaze us and break our hearts. Some of our favorites: "Lift a Glass to Friendship" from Poland, "Pepita" from Portugal, "Bamboo Flute" from China, "Cockles and Mussels" from Ireland, "The Lonely Birch Tree" from Russia, "Valencianita" from Venezuela - all are wonderful and touching. Highly recommended!

Songlist: Volume 1:, Aupres de Ma Blonde, Carmen, Carmela, Lift A Glass to Friendship, Bamboo Flute, Pepita, Cockles and Mussels, The Lonely Birch Tree, Annie Laurie, Valencianita, Beyond the Mountains, Go To Sleep, Volume 2:, Mangwani Impulele, Greensleeves, Vigolin, Dear Fatherland, Farewell, Cherry Blossom, Coconut and Banana, Lullaby of the Shepherd, Still, Still, Still, marianna, All Through the Night, Click Go the Shears, The Fountain, Elanoy

Norman Luboff Choir : Ticket To The Movies

Review: Here are 19 songs, all from the movies, all arranged and conducted by Norman Luboff, A true musical eclectic, Luboff was driven to render every piece with a painstaking exactitude and an arrangement that immediately defined it as a Luboff performance. His choir toured annually from from 1963 until Luboff's death in 1987, and recorded more than 75 albums. This perfectionism is clear on every cut of every Luboff album, of which four, from 1961-65, are represented here. "All the Things You Are," "It Had to Be You," "As Time Goes By" (which Sam played again in "Casablanca," but actually was from the 1931 musical "Everybody's Welcome"), the title tunes from "My Foolish Heart," "Days of Wine and Roses," "High Noon," "On Green Dolphin Street," "An Affair to Remember," "Ruby" (from "Ruby Gentry") and "Laura," the lovely "Unchained Melody," "I'll Get By," "The Song from Moulin Rouge" ("Where is Your Heart"), and Irving Berlin's wonderful "Remember." Luboff is an American master, and his choir is one of the most powerful vocal groups of all time. Sure, all songs are gently accompanied, but the focus is on the smooth-as-maple syrup harmonies. These songs unabashedly tug at our heartstrings and push every romantic and sentimental button, and all we can say is, "highly recommended!"

Songlist: All the Things You Are, My Foolish Heart, High Noon (Do Not Forsake Me), An Affair to Remember, Darling My Darling, As Time Goes By, Days of Wine and Roses, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo, Younger than Springtime, It's Magic, On Green Dolphin Street, It Had To Be You, Ruby, Stella By Starlight, I'll See You Again, Unchained Melody, Laura, I'll Get By (As Long As I Have You), The Song from "Moulin Rouge" (Where Is Your Heart?), Remember

Northwest Girlchoir : Inscription of Hope

Review: Over 100 members of the Girlchoir, directed by Rebecca Rottsolk, bring together this concert of songs and simple, elegant texts that celebrate the resiliency of the human spirit against great adversity. The essence of the CD comes from the first song, the words taken from a cellar wall where Jews were hiding from the Nazis in WWII: "I believe in the sun even when it is not shining and I believe in God even when God is silent." There are 3 songs from "I Never Saw Another Butterfly," a musical memorial to the 15,000 children who passed through the town of Teresienstadt on their way to Auschwitz. 14 songs, all lightly accompanied, that touch the heart from these talented young voices!

Notre Dame Glee Club : Beautiful Rain

Review: The Notre Dame Glee Club is a music tradition that began at the University in 1915. Since 1993, Daniel Stowe has led the Glee Club in world-wide tours with great success. Today, Glee Club repertoire is not just football songs, sea shanties and the alma mater theme. In recent years, the choir has been trimmed in numbers to 55 select singers, and their repertoire now focuses upon a wider range of styles: from German art songs, American spirituals, Russian Orthodox, Baroque and Renaissance sacred music, to Barbershop harmony and folk music from nations of the world. The Glee Club's versatility is showcased in the wide variety of genres on this disc.. The musicianship of the Glee Club is all the more remarkable when considering that the Glee Club is a volunteer ensemble, operating independently from music degree programs. Recorded in spring 2007, in the finely-tuned acoustic of Leighton Concert Hall in the newly-finished DiBartolo Performing Arts Center on the campus of University of Notre Dame.

Songlist: Rain, Rain, Beautiful Rain, Sweep Clean Mary, Daniel Saw the Stone, Prayer of the Children, Abendstanchen, Trinklied, Der Jager Abschied, Duh Tvoy blagiy, Slava v vishnih Bogu, Crucifixus, Domine, non sum dignus, Lamentations of Jeremaih, Down Among the Dead Men, Kpanlongo, Tancuj, Tancuj, Nicaragua, Nicaraguita, Whup! Review: The mission of Kinzers, PA's 33-strong, mixed-voice Oasis Chorale is "to call its singers and its audiences to thoughtful worship of the true God through artistic Choral music sung skillfully." The five-part, 16-song collection "Reflections, Portraits from the Life of Christ" fulfills that mission beautifully, with well-chosen, varied selections such as the Plainsong "Jesus, I Adore Thee" coupled with the traditional hymn "O Come, All Ye Faithful," Eric Whitacre's lovely "Lux Aurumque," Jester Hairston's "Mary's Little Boy Chile" and June Collin's "The Quiet Heart" in the first part, "The Beginning Scenes of the Advent." Favorites in part II, Ministry, are Rosephanye Powell's "The Word was God," Sergei Rachmaninoff's "Our Father in Heaven" and the German Chorale "Lamb of God;" and on part III, Passion, Karl Graun's "Surely He Hath Borne Our Griefs" and Hans Leo Hassler's "Passion Chorale." Ohio State University Men's Glee : Brothers in Song

Review: The Ohio State University Men's Glee Club was organized in 1875 and has created a long tradition of choral excellence. The 2006 incarnation of the group, conducted by Dr. Robert J. Ward, brings us a spirited collection of songs, mixing a cappella with accompanied material, as well as showing off the rich variety of their repertoire, from traditional tunes like "Down By The Riverside," "She Moved Through the Fair," the beautifully harmonic a cappella song "Blow the Candles Out" and "O Mistress Mine" to classical tunes like Franz Schubert's "Widerspruch," Richard Wagner's "Begluckt darf nun dich," Felix Mendelssohn's" Periti autem" and Z. Randall Stroope's "Dies Irae;" to popular music like Billy Joel's lovely "And so it goes," Michael Martin's "Send In the Clowns," and of course songs of OSU: "Carmen Ohio," "The Buckeye Battle Cry," "Campus Echoes" and "Hang on Sloopy." We also liked Sven-David Svenstrom's dramatic a cappella "Kyrie" and John Rutter's "Down By the Sally Gardens." A fine collection from one of America's oldest and most respected Collegiate groups!

Songlist: Carmen Ohio, Musica!, Kyrie , Widerspruch, Send In The Clowns, Dies Irae, "Begluckt darf nun dich", Blow the Candles Out, And So It Goes, She Moved Through the Fair, Landed, O Mistress Mine, Down By the Sally Gardens, Blagoslovi, Dushe Moya, Ghospoda, Periti Autem, Down By the Riverside, Songs of The Ohio State University:, The Buckeye Battle Cry, Campus Echoes, Hang on Sloopy
