'Down in the Valley to Pray' was featured in the film 'O Brother Where Art Thou?' (only it was titled 'Down in River to Pray'), workers in a field sang the song with great fervor as they swung their hoes plowing the land. The song is African-American in origin, perhaps with some Appalachian influence due to the use of the pentatonic scale. The piece should be sung with great energy, with an ever-strong pulse on the first beat of the measure. The ever-popular spiritual, 'Wade in the Water' is especially fun to sing in this arrangement. It lends itself to accompaniment well, or it can be sung a cappella. The great 3 part harmony mixed with the very expressive dynamics make it very fun to sing. The wonderful melody hardly needs decoration. At times, indeed, it seems that harmony merely gets in its way. This arrangement is intended to highlight the tune's effectiveness through its simple and straightforward persentation. With the possible exception of a slight slowing in the final few measures, the piece should remain in tempo thorughout, and dynamics should err on the side of comfortably soft. 'The 'river' figure should remain a background murmur with little or no change in dynamic. Joan Szymko's 'Amazing Grace' is very exciting, there isn't a boring line in any voice part. 'Simple Gifts' is one of 12.000 songs composed by the Shakers during the middle of the nineteenth century. Thought to be written by Shaker Elder Joseph Brackett, the song was both an instruction for like as well sa an instruction for dancing. This arrangement starts out unison before breaking off into glorious 4 part women's harmonies.

“O Virgin Resplendent” - A late medieval canon, moving almost entirely in fluid eighth-note triplets, comes to rest at the end of each phrase. Edited by Mark Winges for the Piedmont Children's Choirs, this piece works beautifully as a processional. “Marriage bed of Chastity” - This lively 13th-century conductus from the Las Huelgas manuscript, with added optional percussion parts, makes a very effective processional. Mary is the "marriage bed of chastity" sought by God the Father for bearing the Son. “O frondens virga” - This new edition of Hildegard's antiphon places it in its liturgical context, pairing it with a plainchant "Magnificat" (included in this edition by William Flynn). The reprise of the antiphon has an optional added voice in organum, reflecting medieval performance practice. Latin, with full translation and historical and performance notes. “Dancing” - "I stumble and tumble," begins this freely-rendered medieval text, set in 6/4 over a delightfully lurching scat ostinato in 12/8. Written for the women of the Cornell University Chorus, it works easily when conducted in a big 2. English. “Circle” - In this medieval mystic text the circle is an image for meditation, first excluding, then embracing, the world. The musical setting reflects the image with contracting and expanding textures, and a soprano solo.

"Canzonette a Tre" - These four songs describe the pangs of thwarted romantic love: torment, desire, and longing. (The third may be the world's only love song declaring envy of a flea--including hopping rhythms.) These songs include a wide range of Renaissance musical devices, including imitation, cadential suspensions, metric changes, and dance-like rhythms. Since they are short and strophic, they give your singers multiple chances of mastering idioms of Renaissance polyphony on a small scale. "Virgines Prudentes" - This very easy double chorus piece, with Chorus I-II echoes, is a wonderful introduction to the world of more than four parts. The text, based on the parable of the wise and foolish virgins, is suitable for Advent. "Congratulamini Mihi Omnes" - "Rejoice with me, all ye who love the Lord" is the beginning of the text, expressing Mary's joy in a first-person responsory text incorporating parts of the Magnificat. This sturdy polyphonic setting concludes with an exultant homophonic section in triple meter. "Tragico Tecti Syrmate" - This angels' lament for the destruction of a city is the crown of Renaissance music for upper voices. While each of the largely syllabic parts is independent, together they interweave in a stately harmonic rhythm, conveying both the dignity of formal mourning, and the richness of the city and its people that are no more.

This arrangement of "Shuffle Off To Buffalo" takes the listener on a captivating journey by train from a Buffalo of the 40's to one of the 90's. Equipped with train sounds and humorous quotes, this Warren/Dubin tune is lively and fun to sing. Each chorus is introduced with a rubato verse which creates a pleasing contrast. "Longing for My Love" is a composition in the style of Take Six, but much easier to learn. Surprising jazz harmony changes on uh-syllables. Very contemplative and a nice change for a normally vacuous repertoire. "Blame it On My Youth" is in the style of Autumn Leaves with notated vocal jazz improvisation part. In this emotional jazz ballad the lyrics tell of longing while two loving people are apart. "Remember Me" is a beautiful SSAA a cappella ballad. Although it is a harmonically lush arrangement, it is very singable.

Suitable for contest or concert. Freytag's latin version of 'Summertime' will be fun for the singers and the audience. 'Playrooms' is an a cappella jazz waltz, that will set a gentle tone in your program. The text, written by Jackie Farrell, describes the beauty of young children and of the simple joys often forgotten by adults. 'Queen of Hearts' is a playful, easy to sing yet very full sounding version of this repeated pop and country top ten hit. "How About You". This a cappella tour-de-force is designed to feature a quartet or the entire choir. This vocal adaptation of the Rosemary Clooney/Hi-Lo's recording will challenge the most adept vocalists and will likewise impress the haughtiest self-proclaimed vocal jazz aficionado. "For All We Know" is a lush four-voice a cappella ballad for soprano soloist. Written for and performed by UNC's SUS 4. The inclusion of the verse at the end is inspired by Mark Murphy's rendition. "Cielito Lindo" is a traditional tune with very unusual rhythm approach. Tempo: breakneck. Requires good, strong sopranos. This intense rubato arrangement of the Rogers & Hart classic " My Funny Valentine", though accessible to an upper-level high school SSAA group with some jazz experience, is challenging and muscially rewarding enough for the collegiate ensemble as well. Ranges are moderate: Soprano I extends up to F5, Alto II down to Bb3, keeping the harmonies close. A soprano solo is featured in the bridge over a three-part background, leading to a dramatic high point at "Stay, little Valentine, stay!" Suggestions for breaths, expressive markings and dynamics are detailed in the score.

The anthems in this book have been chosen from the best religious music of many churches, countries, and centuries. Since the amount of good church music composed for women’s voices is practically negligible, the book contains for the most part traditional airs and carols newly harmonized, arrangements of music composed originally for mixed voices, and a few judiciously selected songs originally composed for solo voice, to which choral parts have been added. There are included a number of anthems intended to be sung without accompaniment and simple enough for a young choir’s first venture into a cappella singing. Accompaniments are provided, but are marked FOR REHEARSAL ONLY, and directors are urged to let their choirs experience the delight and growth that comes from this kind of singing, and never to doubt their ability to undertake it.

When I first read Catherine de Vinck's jubilant celebration of birth, renewal, and life "The Womanly Song of God" (the complete poem appears on page 27), I heard it as a head-tossing, laughing, dancing first-person soliloquy. I was immediately drawn to its energy and set out to compose a work with exactly the same feeling. The Choir acts both as a singing group and as drumming group. The piece begins with a "call to the dance" consisting of an upward scale that builds to a diatomic nine-note chord. Following this, the choir becomes a drumming group, spinning sung rhythmic patterns into a buoyant accompaniment to the sung text. C major (Ionian mode) anchors the piece tonally. As the piece progresses, the choir, as drumming group, adds foot-stomping and hand-clapping, until the piece becomes a vibrant song-dance. - Libby Larsen

Five choral works by one of the master's of 20th century American choral music. Randall Thompson’s "Alleluia" - since 1940, this classic of classics has become one of the nation’s most-often performed choral works. Rare is the church, school, community, or professional choir that has not sung it. The masterful construction and simplicity of text (Alleluia, Amen) make the Alleluia suitable for almost any choir for almost any occasion. "The Gate of Heaven" was composed for the dedication of the Jessie Ball duPont Chapel, Hollins College, Virginia, 1959. It is particularly suitable for the dedication of religious buildings. "Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep" In response to a complaint from his students about having to use Latin texts, Dr. Thompson composed this motet at the blackboard for his class in modal counterpoint. The text is the familiar bedtime prayer from The New England Primer. "Pueri Hebraeorum" was composed in 1928 for the Wellesley College Choir, when the enrollment grew to twice the size the chancel could accommodate. The choirs sang back and forth from opposite ends of the chapel. Jacob Handl's Haec Dies had suggested the pattern for eight-part chorus. The voice parts may be doubled by two quartets of similar instruments. The text is in Latin. Particularly suitable for Palm Sunday. "Rosemary", the name of Thampson's daughter, was commission by the Women's University Glee Club of New York and is based on a cycle of American verse. Any one of these compositions would make an interesting and rewarding addition to a women's choir repertoire.

New for SSA! Russell Robinson has now adapted this widely performed madrigal "Sing We and Chant It" for treble choirs. It's superbly reduced to preserve the harmonic and melodic structure of the original 5-part work. The quintessential madrigal, it features dynamic variations, much repetition for quick learning, and an open score for easy reading. Russell Robinson has adapted "Fire, Fire", one of Thomas Morley's most enduring madrigals, for 3-part voices, just right for today's young and developing choirs. The independent vocal lines make it an excellent learning piece and a perfect "first madrigal" for any choir. "All Ye Who Love Music" was given its English text by Thomas Oliphant in 1837. This arrangement has been lowered one step from the original key of G major to F major. The soprano (Part 1) melody is basically the same; however, Parts II and III have been arranged iin such a way as to limit the range and for ease of singing, while retaining the sound and flavor of the original. As will all Renaissance madrigals, this piece should be sung lightly and lyrically. This trio of fresh, new, madrigals from Jay Althouse is a valuable addition to the choral repertoire SSA choirs. The first is in a traditional madrigal style, with a "fa la la" section and features and echo chorus. The second is lush and lovely, homophonic in nature, with a thought-provoking text. The third is up-tempo and includes an optional hand drum: it could be used as a processional or at a madrigal dinner. Use any or all of the three for concerts, contests, and adjudications.

These pieces of music came into being in a prison camp on Sumatra. The initial idea was Norah Chambers, and Margaret Dryburgh and her worked on the various pieces. Some they did together and others individually, depending on how well we could remember the original pieces of music. The idea was to bring singers together - Dutch, British, Australian - about thirty in all, to make music to uplift us and perhaps to bring some beauty and sanity. The music was written on odd bits of paper, mostly in pencil, and written as small as possible to save paper. It was difficult at first to sing without words, what sound to make, the tempo and the color. The One sound not used was "AH." It was too throaty. We found the best sounds were "Ne, Le." When notes had to be subg together, as in "Morning Sun," the sixteenth notes were not broken, but sung legato. The sounds used were "Le," with the accent on the first note of the sixteenth notes, such as humming was used when there was a solo singer as undercurrent to the melody. These are fascinating works with a real-life history of perservence and courage. A great addition to any concert.

Using only the words "Ave Maria" this rhythmic and visionary work is suitable for women's or very advanced children's choir. “Missa Brevis” is a short mass setting for unaccompanied women's or treble choir consists of Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus and Agnus Dei. Although not technically demanding, the work requires sensitivity of phrasing and detailed attention to text and word stress. The heartfelt simplicity of expression underlines the inherent reverence and beauty of this liturgical text. Performance note: Missa Brevis can also be sung by a mixed chorus with tenors doubling sopranos and basses doubling altos. “Salve Regina” is one of the Catholic Church's four Marian antiphons, is set for unaccompanied women's choir and solo flute or solo soprano. The work requires a good sense of flow, attention to word stress and a convincing understanding of the piece's structure.

Then the choral “pitter-patter,” using hocket and overlapping rhythms, portrays the rain falling on parched Australian towns. Elizabeth Barrett Browning meets Mae West in this swing setting of the immortal love poem "How Do I Love Thee?", paraphrased by the composer. "Boh-doo" and "wah-wah" scat passages put an original spin on this text, and bring the house down when it is performed with gusto. Winner of the Diva Complex 1996 Composition Contest. The utterly silly text free-associates from "Tango Dada" ("A tutu and also a tattoo") as the chorus sings sultry tango rhythms. With castanets, of course! Written for Diva Complex. This powerful plea for peace makes a fine invocation, or opening selection for a concert dedicated to issues of nonviolence, war and peace. Easier than it appears, its clear tonal center provides a firm footing for introducing techniques such as sudden harmonic changes and gradually built tone clusters. Sung by the Peninsula Women's Chorus, Dr. Patricia F. Hennings, Director, at the 1992 Western Division ACDA convention in Honolulu, this piece is exceptionally rewarding for both singers and audience. "The fruit of silence is prayer..." Thus begins Mother Teresa's statement of faith and purpose "Fruits of the Selfless Heart", a poem which she entitled, "A Simple Path." This gentle setting with long note values is given in both a short version, and a longer version with a soloists' counter-melody. It is particularly suitable for use as a benediction, or for repeated singing during the administration of communion, whenever a mantra-like effect of sung prayer is desired. "When Diana's silver light" - Both sound and sense of the Carmina Burana text on the restful loveliness of moonrise are beautifully set in this lyrical, technically strong piece.

The central poem "Sea Song", by Madeleine L'Engle, depicts Neptune as a Sea Bishop who blesses all the creatures of sea and land. The legato lullaby "Dream Song" with rocking rhythms imagines dreams coming in on little boats at sunset, then sailing away again at dawn. Three ships full of wheat come into port, and sailors and young women haggle over their wares. Who will be cheated? "A bright girl, a jungle girl, shining quick as a snake" is the gutsy narrator of 'This Morning.' The voices have strong, syncopated rhythmic figures on "nn" and "la" sounds, and slide upward on "girl" for well-crafted—and enjoyable—instrumental effects. In 'To My Girls,' the poet tells her four graceful, nearly grown daughters. Reflective homophonic sections tell the mother's hopes. They alternate with ostinato patterns of simmering energy, reflecting the dancing excitement of four girls ready to burst forth, out into the world. The most percussive of the set, 'Sisters' features schoolyard-style partnered handclap patterns for singers in pairs. That's in addition to finger snaps, and cymbal, brush, and sticks-on-the-rim vocal percussion effects, all painting a lively picture of the "very same place" that "you and me," sisters, come from.
