Baudboys: Hello World

can you hear the mannnnnnnn sound?

Aeroplane
Drift Away
Gonna Make You Happy Tonight
Every Little Thing She Does
Overjoyed
One More Minute
New York City
Boogie Down
Ghost Train
Homeless Diamonds on The Soles of her Shoes
Carol of the Bells

We had the pleasure of catching 8-man Baudboys, 'the Undisputed Kings of Geek A Cappella,' live at the 2008 Harmony Sweeps Finals, and we look forward to seeing them again at the 2011 Finals, as they won the Pacific Northwest Regional again this year. Composed entirely of Microsoft employees and alumni, this a cappella group has been performing up and down the West Coast for more than two decades, thrilling audiences with their irresistible combination of musical excellence and geek comedy. 'Hello_World,' the group's debut recording, has 11 winning covers, with a fair amount of very funny lyric 'augmentation' thrown in. Some of our favorites are the Red Hot Chili Peppers' 'Aeroplane,' Mentor Williams and Dobie Gray's anthem 'Drift Away,' a quintessentially geek/gamer take on Tripod's 'Gonna Make You Happy Tonight,' Sting's 'Every Little Thing She Does is Magic,' Stevie Wonder's moody 'Overjoyed,' a particularly graphic cover of Weird Al Yankovic's 'One More Minute,' Cub's manic 'New York City,' Al Jarreau & Michael Omartian's jazzy, scattish 'Boogie Down,' Joseph Shabalala & Paul Simon's 'Homeless/Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes' and a completely incongruous, yet lovely, live cut of Dmytrovych Leontovych & Peter Wilhousky's 'Carol of the Bells.' The Baudboys have a fresh, (dare we say) modern sound, understated vocal percussion and background harmonies, sweet leads, great arrangements and a great sense of humor. Don't miss this impressive, surprising, big fun debut CD from Seattle's talented, slightly crazed Baudboys!

Five man, one woman Brazilian quintet BR6 is back, and we are very, very happy to hear it! This impossibly smooth, talented, incredibly arranged a cappella group wowed us with their first album, "Rio A Cappella," then again with a stellar cover album, "Here To Stay." Now we hold in our hot little hands "Musica Popular Brasileira A Cappella Vol. II," (basically, a cappella covers of Brazilian Pop Music), with all the liner notes and song titles in Spanish, and we're sitting here with headphones on, just digging on all this sweet, sexy, salsa-flavored a cappella music! 12 songs, including one of our favorite Idea of North covers, "Mas Que Nada," a jazzy, vocal instrumental song called "Surfboard" that would make the Swingles proud, some silly, fairly wonderful faux horns on "Diexe a Manina," the haunting "Beijo Partido," the vocal percussion and faux horns Jazz gem "Nao Vou Ficar," the breezy, bluenote "Retrato da Vida" and "Eu Quero um Samba," which is impossible not to dance to! Every cut here is big fun, great jazzy stuff, and it didn't even cross our minds that we didn't understand the words. Don't miss this long-awaited collection from one of South America's best!

The venerable and multi-talented member of The Bobs, Richard Bob Greene, produced and arranged the Vocal Jazz "Duets For Two Voices," which features Angie Doctor, a founding member of the Grammy-nominated PM Singers, but best known to us as a beloved member of Clockwork, which won 2 Grammy nominations, 5 Harmony Sweeps Bay Area Regional championships, and 4 top 3 finishes at the Sweeps Finals. Dan Schumacher sang Baritone with Kickshaw, which won the Pacific NW Harmony Sweeps Regional in 1997 and he has since grown tremendously as a Jazz vocalist. There are 12 songs here, all, to quote the liner notes, "Naked harmony: one man and one woman, with no band, no multi-tracking and no overdubbing–entangled yet liberated, precise yet passionate." Some of our favorites are "Honeysuckle Rose," "One Note Samba," the very funny "Brandenburg Gate," Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust," "Temptation," Greene's own funny, manic "Let's Go Wild," Kern/Hammerstein's "All the Things You Are," and "Milonga del Angel," where Greene makes it a trio, adding his powerful bass to Dan and Angie's leads. These have long been some of our favorite vocalists and composers, and this album is as pure, clear and sweet as we have ever heard Vocal Jazz. Doctor and Schumacher sing and harmonize beautifully, they sass and tease, give and take, and give us a lot to love on "Duets for Two Voices!"

Nota: Nota

I Gotta Feeling
Down
Can Mi Nota En Do
You Are My All
Tracks of my Tears
This Love
My Girl
Todo Cambio
Que Tengo Que Hacer
Solo Sin Ti
I Need To Know

Longtime Harmony Sweepstakes fans like us experienced a curious sense of deja vu while watching the Finals of NBC's "The Sing-Off." This was not surprising, of course, because the show was directly inspired by the Harmony Sweeps, but watching the first Champions, Nota, some of the singers looked very familiar. Searching the Sweeps website, we had to go back to the 2004 Finals, where a 7-man group from Puerto Rico named "Alpha", winners of the L.A. Regional, failed to place but impressed a lot of us in the audience. Since that evening "Alpha" members Edgar Rios, Johnny Figueroa and Ludwig Henderson joined with friends Jose Angel Rodriguez, Juan Eli Diaz and David Pinto to form the beautifully-named Nota, and the reaction of the tv audience, studio audience and judges underlined what everyone could tell from the first few notes—Nota ranks among the best, most entertaining a cappella groups in the world! There are 11 cuts on "Nota," covers of Lil' Wayne's "I Gotta Feeling," Jay Sean's "Down" (which has a marvelous salsa segueway), William "Smoky" Robinson's "Track of My Tears" and "My Girl;" Marc Anthony's "I Need to Know" and Maroon 5's "This Love;" and originals such as "You Own My All," by group member David, "Con mi nota en do" and "Solo sin ti" by Edgar, Ludwig, David and Eduardo Reyes, "Que tengo que hacer" and "Todo cambio." We're going to list the first cut, "I Gotta Feeling" as our favorite because listening to it we knew how good Nota is, and, as we expected, the other 11 cuts are all joyous, bilingual musical treats. Listen to the faux harmonica on cut #7, "My Girl," the faux electric guitar solo on cut #6, "This Love" or the faux horn section on "I Need to Know." Look and the amazing performance photos of the group in the liner notes, or go to YouTube and check out a couple live Nota performances. Then, like us, you'll be a huge Nota fan, turning on your friends to this sweet-singing, big fun group of a cappella champions!

Knockin’ On Heaven's Door

Pioneering a cappella 5-man quintet The Persuasions, who have wowed us live at the West Coast A Cappella Summit, and with 18 beautiful albums on Singers.com, bring us another winning tribute to a rock icon. Having so honored such groups as the Beatles, U2, Frank Zappa and the Grateful Dead, "Knockin' on Bob's Door" features (of course) the music of Bob Dylan. Two Doo-Woppy, rearranged versions of "Mr. Tambourine Man" and the anthem "Like a Rolling Stone" and a rhythmic, Africanized "All Along the Watchtower" gives us an immediate taste of what a treat we're in for. "Don't Think Twice It's All Right," "Positively 4th Street," "Lay Lady Lay," "Just Like A Woman"" and "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" are all Dylan masterworks that are reinvented and rearranged in the Persuasions inimitable trademark harmonies. Other favorites among the 14 sumptuous cuts are "Blowing in the Wind," "When I Paint My Masterpiece" and "Forever Young." Dylan's iconic material and the Persuasions' deep-harmonied, soulful a cappella sound make a winning combination that we're sure you'll want in your collection!

House Jacks: Level

You Were Everything
Days of Desire
You're the One
From the Boy in Me
The Boy is Gone
The Path You Walk
So Bad (It Feels So Good)
Red Dress
Believe
All Away
Show Your Face
To The Only One

As longtime fans of this talented, pioneering Bay Area a cappella group, on "level" a quintet composed of vets Austin Willacy, Deke Sharon, Roopak Ahuja, Troy Horne, and Jake Moulton. When we first fell in love with the Jacks they were blowing us away reinventing covers of Led Zep's "Kashmir," the Gershwins' "Summertime" and Lennon/McCartney's "All You Need is Love." In the last few albums they have been reinventing themselves, using the songwriting, composing and arranging talents of everyone in the group to give notice that the Jacks are still a cappella Big Dogs. "Level" is 12 songs, all original material, with "You Were Everything," "From the Boy in Me," "The Path You Walk" and "Show Your Face" written and composed by Austin; "The Boy is Gone" by Roopak; the lovely, surreal "All Away" by Deke; "Days of Desire" and the symphonic "Believe" by Roopak and S. Chakrabarti; "You're the One" by Deke, Austin and Roopak; " one of the best a cappella blues songs we've heard, by Jake and Deke, "So Bad (It Feels So Good);" "Red Dress" by Roopak and Jake; and the final cut, the heart-tugging "To The Only One" by Troy. Always known for grounbreaking vocal percussion, the Jacks have added electronic augmentation to create synthesizer effects and a rich, full sound that mimics almost any instrument. Listen to the faux synthesizer on "Red Dress," and "Believe" featuring Savita Ahuja is a guest vocalist (which, as far as we can tell, has the first faux a cappella sitar we've heard) it's an unbelievably rich vocal tapestry with an infectious hook. Every cut on "Level" reinvents what is possible in a cappella, and the album should take the Jacks to the level we think they deserve, one of the most creative performing and recording groups in a cappella!

Just A Gigalo / I Ain't Got Nobody

Still Crazy After All These Years

Ross, Aaron, Kurt and Carl, "Like four thieves who've been stealing the show for years", (Toronto Star) Cadence has played to sold-out concert halls and toured jazz festivals worldwide, sharing the stage with artists like Bobby McFerrin, Quincy Jones and Gordon Lightfoot. Both of their Juno-nominated albums have garnered wide critical acclaim, including CARAs for Best Jazz Song, Best Original Composition and Best Rock/Pop Album, and their 2005 release "Twenty for One" was nominated for the Best Vocal Jazz Album Juno Award alongside such established musical mainstays as Diana Krall and Paul Anka. A cool rat pack of musical misfits, Cadence thrills their audiences with infectious energy, wild stage antics, and by pushing a cappella music to amazing new heights! "Speak Easy" is a mellow, sublime collection of 12 innovatively arranged gems: classics like Cole Porter's "It's All Right with Me," Jimmy Van Heusen/Sammy Cahn's "Ain't That a Kick in the Head," and a bluenote/scattish take on Lerner & Loewe's "On the Street Where You Live," from "My Fair Lady." Then there are two sweet originals by group member Aaron Jensen, "Good Love" and "High and Drysville," smoky and hip with some killer faux horns, that you'll swear were written for a black & white Noir detective movie in the late 1940s. Several of our favorites are reinvented pop songs, such as Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now," Neil Young's "Harvest Moon" and Paul Simon's "Still Crazy After All These Years," all perfectly arranged—and the foursome's "Just a Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody" is simply big, silly fun. The bottom line is, we love "Speak Easy" and, well, everything else we've heard by Cadence, and we're betting that you will too!

Ten-time Grammy Award winner/vocal innovator Bobby McFerrin surprises us yet again with VOCAbuLarieS, his first new release in eight years. Like his #1 worldwide hit song Don't Worry Be Happy and his multi-platinum duo album Hush with cellist Yo-Yo Ma, VOCAbuLarieS is based on Bobby's experiments with multi-track recording and his ceaseless exploration of the potential of the human voice. VOCAbuLarieS is Bobby McFerrin music for the 21st century. A collaboration with the composer/arranger/producer Roger Treece, VOCAbuLarieS features over fifty of the world's finest singers, recorded one at a time and in small groups to create a virtual choir made up of over 1,400 vocal tracks. Constructed as meticulously as a Mozart symphony or a Steely Dan album, intricately synthesized from countless stylistic elements, VOCAbuLarieS may be unlike any album anyone has ever recorded. Yet the music is always accessible, joyous, and inviting. VOCAbuLarieS celebrates Bobby's love of all musical genres, from classical to world music, R&B to gospel and beyond, building upon McFerrin's past explorations and journeying into bold new territory. If the song Don't Worry Be Happy is all you know about Bobby McFerrin, sit back and prepare to be amazed.

The 57-strong, all-male Los Angeles-based Westminster Chorus is a Barbershop Harmony Society Legend! First formed in the Spring of 2002 of 15 members whose average age was 20, the chorus grew to over 50 members, captured the Far Western District Chorus Championship in 2003 and 2005, then placed an incredible 2nd to The Vocal Majority in 2006. This relatively unknown group, the youngest chorus ever to grace the International stage, went on to win International Gold in 2007 and 2010! "It Only Takes a Moment" is a well-chosen "Best Of" selection of 16 varied songs, from traditional tunes like "Sloop John B," "Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel," "Shenandoah" and "Goodbye Dixie, Goodbye;" Swing music like, a wonderful "Nat King Cole Medley," Gershwin's "Let's Burn Up the Town" and "Hit That Jive Jack;" Classical songs like Rachmaninov's "Bogroditse Devo" and Esch and Whitacre's "Lux Aurumque;" heartstring-tuggers like the title tune, "Their Hearts Were Full of Spring," "Still Fighting It" and "O Love That Will Not Let Me Go" and foot-tappers like "Early American Uptempo Medley." Westminster's sound is powerful yet subtle, equally adept at inspiring us with a soaring crescendo and breaking our hearts with a romantic tune about love. This is a marvelously entertaining, beautifully arranged collection from the talented young guns of the Barbershop Harmony Society!

2010 International Barbershop Harmony Society Champs Storm Front describe as: "Three years, Nine contest sets, One Gold Medal. Enjoy Storm Front's journey on "The Road to Gold!" The group's extensive use of humor and parody, particularly directed at the process they have had to go through to finally win are a big reason why they have consistently been judged in the top ten. They placed sixth in Nashville in 2008, singing Showstopper parodies "The Champs are Coming Back," "We've Grown Accustomed to 3rd Place," and the hilarious "Don't Ask Me Why;" third in Anaheim in 2009, where they unleashed their "Medal Come Back" parody, the ludicrous "Lida Rose/Dream of Now" medley, and their Finalist "Top Ten Parody;" and Philadelphia 2010, where their
"Wonderful World" costumes, the contest rule "Anything Goes" parody and the manic Jukebox "Jukebox Saturday Night Medley (Car Song)" montage gave them their coveted Gold Medals! Although some of the inside Barbershop jokes went over our heads, as these are all live cuts, it's clear they all hit the judges and audiences right in their BHS funny bones. There are two discs here: Disc 1 has all six songs from their Finals performances in 2008 and 2009, and Disc 2 has all six songs from their incredible win in 2010. Several songs, such as the totally silly "Where or When," "Don't Fence Me In," "Lida Rose," and "We've Grown Accustomed to 3rd Place," are repeated, sometimes more than once. Wonderful harmonies, ringing, incredible closing chords, very funny, creative material—it all adds up to great entertainment, and, happily, finally, to Gold for Storm Front!

He is one of the founders of Nashville Singers, and is Director of Music (in addition to wearing several other hats) for the 14-man group. "The Journey Begins" is a six-song debut recording for the NS, featuring The Turtles' "Happy Together," the traditional folk tune "Shenandoah," the Dean Martin trademark hit "That's Amore" (sung by the Amore 4, a Barbershop Quartet within the Singers) Token's Doo-Wop standard "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" and "The Impossible Dream" from "Man of La Mancha." "Destinations" is the second well-crafted album by Lead Sean Devine (formerly of one of our favorite groups, the Alley Cats), Tenor Shawn York, Baritone Patrick Claypool and Bass Cory Hunt of Orange County, CA-based OC Times. When we reviewed their debut album "Let's Fly" they had just won Silver (2nd Place) medals at the 2007 SPBSQSA International Quartet competition in Denver. We called them "the fast-rising future of Barbershop," and we were so right, in 2008 they won Gold! After that came a national and international tour that covered 33 states and 9 countries, from Madrid, Spain and St. Petersburg, Russia to Helsinki, Finland and Aukland, New Zealand. Returning home, OCT made their next Destination a recording studio to record their 14 favorite tunes, most arranged by their friend Aaron Dale. Some favorites are Freddie Mercury of Queen's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," a pair by Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, "Surfer Girl" and "Fun, Fun, Fun;" Howard Steiner/Buddy Kaye's "Don't Be a Baby, Baby," William Trader's "Fool Such As I," Randy Newman's "I Will Go Sailing No More," Billy Rose/Mabel Wayne's "It Happened in Monterey," Alan & Marilyn Bergman/Marvin Hamlisch's poignant "The Way We Were" and the live cut "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You" by Maurice Mysels/Ira Kosloff. Each of these cuts is a little Barbershop masterpiece, brought home to us by consummate entertainers OC Times, and "Destinations" is big fun from beginning to end!

Founded way back in 1963 in St. Charles, MO, The 160-strong Ambassadors of Harmony are one of the best, most entertaining men's Barbershop choruses in the world, and they have the Gold necklaces to prove it: SPEBSQSA (Barbershop Harmony Society) Gold in 2004 and 2009! We can tell by their costumes, expressions and wonderful music that (1) these gentlemen are having big fun up there on stage in international competition, and (2) they can sing their collective tails off! We think we can call "Oh What a Day" a best-of collection, mainly because it includes "Seventy-Six Trombones," the Merideth Willson tune which led off their Gold-winning set in July, 2009, but also because every one of these cuts is a stone winner. "America," the sassy Stephen Sondheim/Leonard Bernstein hit from "West Side Story," "Friend Like Me," Howard Ashman/Alan Menken's song from "Aladdin," a cover of the traditional Scottish Air "Loch Lomond" that could break your heart, the wonderfully dramatic theme song from "Man of La Mancha," Ira and George Gershwin's sweet "Love Walked In," the Spanky and Our Gang hit "Lazy Day," Brian Wilson's "God Only Knows," Merle Kilgore/June Carter's Johnny Cash hit "Ring of Fire," and the Edith Piaf hit "If You Love Me, Really Love Me (Hymne a L'Amour)"—these are some of our favorite songs of all time, and the A of H nail every one of them. That’s entertainment!

Praise-apella: Love God

I'm Letting Go
Don't Get Comfortable
Blessed Be Your Name
I Give You My Heart
You're Worthy Of My Praise
Lean On Me
Everlasting God
How Great Is Our God

Jen, Amy, Dean, Ryan and Ron are Praise-Apella, a mixed-voice Contemporary Christian a cappella quintet hailing from Avon Lake, OH. Love God is the debut album by this talented, soulful group, who combine solid, rhythmic vocal percussion and inspirational music with pristine vocal harmonies. There are 8 joyous, foot-tapping tunes that make you want to dance and sing along: "I'm Letting Go," "Don't Get Comfortable," "Blessed Be Your Name," "I Give You My Heart," "You're Worthy of My Praise," a beautifully re-invented cover of Bill Withers' 1972 hit "Lean on Me," "Everlasting God" and "How Great Is Our God." Hearing most of these songs for the first time, we have to say that Praise-Apella's full, rich, soulful sound owes equal amounts to some of the best vocal percussion we've heard in a Contemporary Christian group, top-drawer leads and harmonies, and innovative arrangements. "Love God" is a feel-good album of praise and worship. You may have heard Praise-Apella on the popular Christian FM Radio station The Fish. If all this sounds like Praise-Apella made this album just for you, you will definitely love "Love God!"

Nobody Knows the Trouble I See

Witness
All Through the Night
In the Garden

Abide with Me
Over Yonder
Hark, I Hear the Harps Eternal
Ain'-A That Good News!

Since its founding in 1997 by director Diane Loomer, C.M., recipient of the Order of Canada, 57-strong men's chorus Chor Leoni has been recognized as a Canadian choral treasure, and lauded for its innovative programming, technical precision and commitment to the creation of new Canadian works for male choir. We have given high praise to the ensemble's collections of Folk, Pop, traditional and original tunes in the Singers.com catalog, and totally enjoyed this collection of traditional Christian hymns, like "Shall We Gather at the River," "All Beautiful the March of Days," the Shaker hymn "Not One Sparrow is Forgotten," "Precious Lord," "Eternal Father, Strong to Save," "In The Garden," "Abide with Me" and "Hark, I Hear the Harps Eternal;" Spirituals like the title tune, "Nobody Knows the Trouble I See," "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," "In Dat Great Gittin' Up Mornin'," "Witness," "Over Yonder" and "Ain'-A That Good News!;" and Folk songs like Stephen Foster's "Hard Times" and Antonin Dvorak's "Goin' Home." There is some piano accompaniment. Chor Leoni doesn't overpower us with testosterone as some large, all-male choruses have a tendency to do, but touches and moves us with beautiful leads and sweet harmonies. Kudos and thanks to Ms. Loomer for crafting one of our favorite men's choruses, and for another stellar collection, "Meetin' Here Tonight!"

Back in the studio after a four year haitus, Anonymous 4 returns with The Cherry Tree — an instant holiday music classic featuring medieval English carols and Anglo-American spiritual songs. It is the eighteenth original recording for the renowned vocal ensemble and their first since 2006’s Gloryland, which debuted at number three on the Billboard classical chart. Anonymous 4 has been a perennial presence on Billboard’s Top Classical Albums chart and hit number one with their folk-inspired American Angels in 2004. The Cherry Tree is named after the miracle ballad of Joseph and Mary, the earliest text of which survives from a Coventry Play from around 1400. The ‘Cherry Tree’ story persisted in many forms, making its way into medieval British carols of the mid-15th century and into British and American traditional ballads. In it, Joseph doubts the divine origin of Mary’s pregnancy only to hear Jesus speak from within Mary’s womb, causing a cherry tree to bend its branches and offer his mother its fruit.

Adding to a long tradition of honors and awards, Elektra once again won first place in the women's voices category of the 2010 NNational Competition for Canadian Amateur Choirs. The choir's many recordings are best sellers in the Singers.com catalog, and are in demand all over the world—the choir is also proud to offer ongoing programs that train and encourage young singers, conductors and composers. They have commissioned and premiered over 60 new works, many of which have become standards of women's choral literature. "Chez Nous" (French for "Our House") is a gorgeous Christmas collection of 20 songs, featuring such favorites as Michael Praetorius' "Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming," Edward Henderson's lovely "Star Song," Benjamin Britten's wonderful 12-song "A Ceremony of Carols," Jeffrey Enns' "Da Pacem," Robert Buckley's "December," and "Night of Silence" by Daniel Kantor. All of these songs are lightly accompanied by piano, but the focus is on the sweet, angelic leads, harmonies and rounds by the perfectly trained and led voices of Elektra. Simply beautiful!

Vuku (Wake Up Little Chicks)
Thalaza (I Miss My Home, I Miss My Farm)
Old Macdonald... Zulu Style

"Songs from a Zulu Farm" is the 16th excellent album by Ladysmith, in addition to 4 live performance DVDs. These nine Zulu men, led by leader/founder Joseph Shabalala, are one of our favorite African Choral groups of all time; and their hythmic mbube songs made them famous throughout Africa long before Paul Simon was captivated by their music and wrote and recorded with them. Several of their albums, notably "Gift of the Tortoise" and "How The Leopard Got His Spots" with Danny Glover, are directed at children, and so is "Songs from a Zulu Farm." Since their earliest recordings, the men of Ladysmith have maintained a reverence for their past, a time of youth and innocence, when the world consisted of the hills and open fields of their parents' farms in Zululand. The English translations of these 16 song titles tells the story: "Away, You River Snakes," "Bad Donkey," "Don't Leave Home Too Soon," "River Talk," "Clouds, Move Away!," "The Prettiest Bird?," "The Donkey's Complaint," "Catch The Bird," "Praise the Cows and Bulls," "Wake Up, Little Chicks," "I Miss My Home, I Miss the Farm" and "Old MacDonald, Zulu Style." The hypnotic rhythms, the joyous harmonies, all make us want to accept LBM's invitation to come home with them, a home that nurtured and taught these exceptional singers. Colorful and extensive liner notes, and the music, throughout, complete with animal and other sound effects, is beautiful and touching! .

First formed in 1979, Libana, focuses on researching and performing songs, dances and instrumental music from around the world, particularly music written for, by and about women. "Turning" is the group's 7th excellent album, some of the 17 songs accompanied by its members playing their own instruments, including clarinet, djembe, djun djun, bells, frame drum, kalimba, shekere, soprano recorder, accordion, hammered dulcimer, ipu, piano and agogo bell. Some of our favorites are the a cappella tunes "I Arise Facing East" by Deborah Lanstaff, the Japanese Folk tune "Hotaru Koi," "Con el Viento," a lovely round from Renaissance Spain, the powerful Bulgarian Folk tune "Planino Peren," Linda Hischhorn's soaring "Sin Shalom" and Melchior Franck's 16th Century round "Da Pacem." We also particularly loved the percussion-accompanied South African tune "Babe Thandaza/Sin Djen," the live Hawai'ian song "E Pele E Pele/E Pele I Hawai'i" and the greeting and blessing for peace, "Salaam Aleikhum." Libana's music is always a treat to us, authentic and new to our ears; and performed beautifully with reverence and spirit!.

Since a cappella pioneer Bobby McFerrin singlehandedly gave the vocal arts a hand up to a whole new level of possibilities in the 1980s with his iconic hit "Don't Worry, Be Happy," we have looked at him and listened to him with awe and gratitude. Experiencing him perform live several times only increased these feelings exponentially, and we had the feeling that everyone in the audience was on exactly the same page. Well, in the early 90s Bobby seems to have picked up on that, and has invited the audience to participate, and included interaction with guest musicians, all improvised. This has cemented his reputation as a marvelous entertainer, and has created a new kind of concertÑnot a performance, but a "communal sharing and celebration of music." This is exactly what the new DVD "Live in Montreal" is all about. It's beautifully filmed at the "Festival International de Jazz de Montreal," In these 21 video cuts, part of the audience is right up on stage with Bobby, and he improvises and creates musical events with them and members of the main audience. He improvises with a trapeze artist above him, and with a singing viola player. I'll just list some of the cut titles to give you a taste of what happens in this very special DVD: 12. "Improvisation with Richard Bona," 13. "Improvisation, Country Stuff," 13. "Baby," 14. "Improvisation with Tamango "Well You Needn't," 15. "Bwee Do," 16. "Le Grand Choeur de Montreal, It's a Wonderful World," 17. "Circlesong One," 18. "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and 19. "The Wizard of Oz Medley." Bobby is a living a cappella legend, and this live show is creative, funny, touching and simply brilliant. DonÕt miss this one!
