This recording should be warmly received by vocal jazz and barbershop
fans, as the four mixed voices of The Airwaves sing unadulterated close
harmony arrangements of popular holiday songs. They sound like a group from
the '40s or '50s on songs like "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts),"
"Sleigh Ride" and "Its Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas."
Then the unmistakable barbershop chord progressions slip in next to the
jazz chords on "Silent Night" and "White Christmas."
This is pleasant Yuletide harmony!

The four members of Inner Voices' bios read like a who's who of session
recording. Practice has made perfect, and they are caroling at your door!
The female soprano, alto and tenor (one of whom is Morgan Ames, Grammy winning
arranger) and male baritone, along with guest vocalist Mervyn Warren of
Take 6, have produced an immaculate recording. The luminous sound has been
refined and honed until it shimmers. All four singers trade lines on "I
Wash My Face in a Golden Vase" (accompanied by keyboard, as is "Christmas
in My Dreams"). Soprano Donna McAfee's soars on "The Savior is
Born," gliding effortlessly up and down the scale with total precision.
"Christmas Night in Harlem" captures that NewYork smoky jazz club
vibe; "My Father" combines the Indian raga (phrygian scale?) with
the traditional Western carol for a haunting, enigmatic result. This sophisticated
group satisfies the heart and the mind.

This a cappella women's quartet (SATB - really!) is fabulous. Powered
by the arrangements of Morgan Ames, who's on the music faculty of the University
of North Colorado, these vocal jazz Christmas tunes are a pleasure and out
of the ordinary. Highlights include "Merry Christmas Baby," "Boogie
Woogie Santa Claus," and guest star Al Jarreau's cameo on one of four
accompanied pieces. Songlist

This is one of the finest albums that this great vocal jazz group has
ever produced, Christmas not withstanding. Great arrangements, with special
guest Tony Bennett on "The Christmas Song."

Merry Christmas from Sweden! You'd expect nothing but the best from The
Real Group, and this 1997 holiday release does not disappoint! It opens
with seven mellow ballads, including "Silent Night" in Swedish
("Stilla Natt"), several German songs and a well known Italian
song often sung by Swedes right before Christmas, "Sankta Lucia."
Then there are six rhythmic pieces, starting off with "En riktig jul"
("a real Christmas") one of several original songs by RG member
Anders Edenroth. With the impeccable blend and sophisticated harmonies we've
come to expect from The Real Group, this album is a great way to add international
flair to your holiday music collection.

Our favorite! Gene Puerling mixes fabulous arrangements
with more traditional performances. Includes favorites such as "Deck
the Halls," "Caroling Caroling" along with "Jesu Parvule"
and "Nigh Bethlehem." All 17 are a cappella, as rich and smooth
as hot cocoa by the fire.

What a wonderful surprise! This lovely CD arrived out of the blue - a
well-produced, well-sung original contribution to Yuletide music. This mixed
group has wonderful voices, impeccable blending on favorites like "Rockin'
Around the Christmas Tree," "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts)"
and "Silver Bells." Somewhat reminiscent of Glad and Singers Unlimited,
Take Heart!'s clear voices combine on great jazzy arrangements - we especially
like "Bells Are Swingin'," a Christmas bell song medley which
concludes with a cute two year olds' rendition of Jingle Bells. I only wish
they had more than 10 songs - they're all great! All a cappella with tambourines,
sleigh bells and other acoustic percussive touches. Songlist
