Land of Lakes Choirboys

Music critics from all around the world rave about the performances of the Land of Lakes Choirboys. Being the only boys’ choir outside of Germany to have received the honor of opening the International Bach Festival in Ratingen, Germany, in June 1999, with a full concert, the Land of Lakes Choirboys asserted its position as one of the finest boys’ choirs in the world by receiving a ten-minute ovation after a superb performance of a Bach Cantata. Perhaps the most talked-about aspects of the choir are its pure and hauntingly beautiful sound, its power and flawless intonation. Back home in Minnesota the boys continue to awe and inspire audiences with their unique sound and vast repertoire ranging from the Baroque to modern-day hits.

The Land of Lakes Choirboys are made up up six different choirs: The Prep Choir is for boys aged 5-7; The Training Choir has boys from 8-12; the Resident Choir of boys 8-14 that performs locally; the Nordic and Viking Choirs, national and international touring choirs, for experienced choristers 8-14; and the Alumni Choir, composed of young men with changed voices. Founded in 1976, the choir has since traveled and performed through 49 of the 50 states. They have also sung in England, Wales, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, France, Poland, Iceland, Australia and New Zealand. In 2004, the choir won the "Trebby Award" for Best Boy's Choir Album. The award, earned by votes of boy and cathedral choir enthusiasts from around the world, went to their album Steal Away.

Francis D.C. Stockwell, a New Zealander by birth, has been Artistic Director of the Elk River, Minnesota choir since 1997. Aaron J. Carpenter works with the choirs as Associate Conductor

"Steal Away" is wonderful collection of sacred and spiritual tunes, from the Viking Choir, the national and international touring choir and one of 6 choirs of different levels that form the renowned Land of Lakes Choirboys.
Favorites are a cappella tunes "Phos Hilaron," the haunting spiritual and title tune, "Steal Away," "Dixit Dominus," "O Hear the Joyful Music," "Der Dui-Dui," Brahms' "In stiller Nacht," the traditional Austrian song "Fein sein" and Haydn's "Die Landlust." But all the other tunes, piano and organ accompanied, are equally lovely. A beautiful collection!

"Minnesota's Singing Boys" had humble beginnings in 1976 when 18 Elk River, MN boys gathered for their first choir practice under director Craig Carmody Anderson. Today the Choir has grown to an organization of 120 boys making up 6 different choirs of varying levels, ranging in age from 5 to 18 years, that draws boys from all over the Twin Cities. The Choirboys have a rich history of travel and concert appearances, especially the Viking Choir, which is featured on this recording. The group has an international reputation for its pure and hauntingly-beautiful sound.
