Shine

Shine barbershop quartet

This men's quartet was the Evergreen District Champion in 1989. It was reformed in 1997 with a new lead and a new name, and comes to you tonight from the Seattle/Tacoma area. Even though their average age is 40, they have a collective 90 years of barbershop singing experience and three music degrees! They are honored to be one of only twelve men's quartets in the United States to be invited to the prestigious Buckeye Invitational Quartet Contest in Columbus Ohio for 2 years in a row.

Ralph Scheving - Tenor Ralph began his barbershopping career in 1977 with some college buddies while attending the University of Washington. Struggling for a name, his quartet chose a nearby street they traveled on to get to their quartet practice. "University Way" went on to win the Evergreen District contest in 1979. He sang in his second District Championship Quartet, "The Harmonic Tremors" from 1983 - 1988, and later in "Vocal Attraction," from 1989-1993. Ralph works in the Electronic Maintenance area of the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington. He is happily married to Lisa. They have two little crooners, Sammy and Jenny.

Don Rose - Lead Don hails from Puyallup, Washington. He was introduced to barbershop in college at Western Washington University back in 1981. The brass players there wanted to woo all the pretty woodwind women (well, really any women) during Valentine's Day. These days, Don is a high school band and choir director at Washington High School in the Tacoma area. He and his wife Laurie have two children, Sarah and Jack. Don is a steelhead fisherman in his spare time (what spare time?), and a tag master (well, he thinks so).

Ted Chamberlain - Baritone Ted lives in Puyallup, Washington. He began 'shopping in 1980 when only 16 years old, and has been going strong ever since. Ted is truly the "Choir Boy" of the quartet, singing with the prestigious Lacrosse Boys choir at the age of eight. Ted currently directs the Rainier Valley Harmonizers of Puyallup, and has sung in eight registered quartets prior to "Shine." Ted is also a choir director at Woodbrooke Middle School in the Tacoma area. He and his wife Susan have two children, Amanda and Evan.

Stu Turner - Bass Stu began barbershopping in the late 60's while just a teenager (Ted and Don hadn't started preschool yet). He has sung in numerous fine quartets, including International top 20 "Lion's Share" and "Vocal Attraction." He has directed the Mt. Baker Toppers, the Lake Washington Skippers, and is currently the assistant director of Bellevue Northwest Sound. You can even find Stu tuning pianos when he isn't singing shop! Stu began as a music teacher and now he works for Boeing as a Q.A. Investigator for the 777. He and his lovely wife, Linda reside in Mukilteo.

From the Pacific Northwest region, Shine favors tried-and-true barbershop material, though sometimes updating their sound with newer arrangements, and won their district competition in 1989 (under another name). Beginning with their namesake song, "Shine/SteppinÕ Out," arranged by the maestro Greg Volk (and also recorded by heavyweights Acoustix), and closing with "And So To Sleep Again" (with Sweet Adelines quartet Seattle Style), their tone is warm and smooth, with a good balance between registers. "Redhead" and the aforementioned title track are showy, while "Song For Mary," Button Up Your Overcoat" and "Every Day Of My Life" emphasize vertical harmony and have less melodic embellishment Ð seemingly more typical of ShineÕs repertoire. Something to like here for every barbershopper.
