Perfect Gentlemen barbershop quartet

DAN JORDAN - s a member of AFTRA, AGVA, SAG, and 30 year member of SPEBSQSA, and has appeared on various television, radio and stage shows, singing and/or acting on: ER, Gilmore Girls, The Simpsons (Homers Barbershop Quartet), Arrested Development, Neil Diamond's HBO & ABC Specials, Nurses, Blossom, TW3 with David Frost, Amazon.com commercials, the BBC, KCET, ABC, NBC and CBS specials, various Disney video projects, and currently in “A Day In His Life.” Dan has been awarded Six Gold and Six Platinum Recording Awards, plus two multi-Platinum Recording Awards. As a music producer and performer, his work has taken him on tours throughout the United States, Great Britain, Canada, Russia, Germany, Mexico and the West Indies, logging over 800 shows since first singing A Cappella some 30 years ago. Dan has two district quartet championships to his name, the International Barbershop Quartet Championship, singing lead with The New Tradition, multiple medals singing with The Grand Tradition and The 139th Street Quartet and the National A Cappella Championship with The Perfect Gentlemen, plus a 6 year stint on “Main Street USA” as baritone of The Dapper Dans of Disneyland. Dan has been project coordinator for various artists including: The Hi-Lo's!, Neil Diamond, The New Tradition, and Revolution. Multiple ASCAP Artist Awards and 5 GRAMMY Considered CDs, as well as cofounder and producer of the World AcappellaFest, cofounder of the Association of Far Western District Champions (AFWDC), a certified stage presence judge (SPEBSQSA) , ICCA Judge, Harmony Sweepstakes Judge and past Los Angeles Regional producer. Dan owns his own music production company www.entertainers4u.com and his wife Barbara, make their home in Glendale, CA with their children, Nicole and Matthew, while his oldest son, Danny, Jr., lives in the San Fernando Valley and works in radio promotions for KIIS FM.

PHIL GOLD - began performing professionally in 1987 when he moved to Los Angeles. Since then, he has performed in 41 States, Canada, Brazil, Japan, Russia, the Georgian Republic, at The White House, on board cruise ships in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean, and on an aircraft carrier in the Pacific. Having sung all through school, Phil graduated from U.S.I.U. in San Diego as a musical theatre major. He spent five-plus seasons performing in 22 productions with the Los Angeles Opera, and has sung with the Los Angeles Master Chorale, been a featured soloist with the Roger Wagner Chorale, and had the privilege to be one of the Ray Conniff Singers on Ray’s very last tour. A veteran of musical theatre, Phil toured the country for 13 months in the jazz quartet, the Angel City 4, in City of Angels. Other theatrical appearances include shows without quartets: Oklahoma, The Mikado, FiddlerOn the Roof, Baby, and Assassins; and some with: The Music Man, My Fair Lady, Forever Plaid, and it’s holiday sequel, the brand new Plaid Tidings. His involvement from the beginning of that last production took him to Vancouver, Canada where he made his directorial debut with the Canadian premiere of the show. Equally comfortable behind the scenes, Phil toured Germany and Austria stage managing the musical Sisterella. He also co-produced World Acappellafest, the largest a cappella concert ever held in Los Angeles, with fellow TPG member, Dan Jordan. Phil’s previous a cappella groups have included the doo-wop groups The Shades and The Alley Cats, and like everyone who has ever sung with TPG, he too has peddled the “bicycle built for four” on Main Street singing with the Dapper Dans, where he sang with all of the current TPG members. Phil has appeared on Brooklyn Bridge (CBS), Ned & Stacey (UPN), TheTonight Show with Jay Leno (NBC), Passions (NBC), and Gilmore Girls (WB). He can be heard as the voice of Wendel in the direct-to-video Friends Are Forever in Australia, and on the studio cast album of the Gershwin musical Tell Me More (Nonesuch), The Alley Cats’ release of Strike 3! (Primarily A Cappella) and Holiday in Plaid (Fynsworth Alley). Phil’s proudest productions are his two daughters, Hailey and Colleen, with whom he shares his Altadena home, along with his wife Jill and their perfectly awful cat.

TIM REEDER - Baritone and Tenor Vocalist, Martin Tenor Guitar and Ukulele. Tim has been writing songs and singing his whole life. His introduction to singing barbershop started in High School, where his music teacher, Ron Browne ("Dapper Dans" and "Yerfadder's Mustache" fame), taught him the harmony ropes. He first performed on national television in 1976 with his Barbershop Quartet, "The Hotshots." In 1978 his college quartet was hired to sing weekends at Disneyland. An accomplished musician, Tim's prowess on tenor guitar, his ability to sing alto and scat, plus his love for swing music, lead him to form his own 1930's-era vocal jazz group called "Vocalworks." This "hip" group, prominently featured Tim's scat-singing and ukulele playing. In addition, they were featured on Garrison Keillor's national radio show, "A Prairie Home Companion." Tim's wife Debbie sings soprano with the group, along with former Dapper Dan alumni Bruce Cooper, and on stand up bass, "Magic" Dave Eastly. Vocalworks has appeared in various countries, including Sweden. Tim has appeared on television, in commercials, and the legitimate stage too. You've probably seen and herd him on "Home Improvement," "Gilmore Girls," "That 70s Show," Disney's "Haunted Mansion" starring Eddie Murphy, and Holiday commercials for "Amazon.com" to name a few. Tim is a member of the Frank Thorne Chapter of SPEBSQSA and is a native of Mississippi. Tim and his wife Debbie (also a musician), live in Capistrano Beach with their two sons who are both aspiring musicians.

JIM CAMPBELL - has been singing professionally since 1991 when he moved to Los Angeles from Louisville, KY. He grew up around his mother Carole's Sweet Adelines activities and sang along with her recordings of male quartets like the Suntones and Bluegrass Student Union. Hooked on barbershop singing, he soon joined the Louisville Thoroughbreds and cut his barbershop teeth under the direction of Jim Miller and Allen Hatton. At Bellarmine College he studied voice for 4 years and was heavily involved in their choral music program. He also appeared in professional regional musical theatre productions and was a chorus member with Kentucky Opera. Majoring in Communications, he also was a sergeant in the US Army Reserves for 6 years. Heading west, he studied opera at the Vocal Institute at UC Santa Barbara with Elizabeth Mannion. In 1992 he began singing bass with the Dapper Dans of Disneyland. Jim has also been bass soloist and section leader for Canterbury Choir at All Saints Church in Pasadena since 1991, recording R. Vaughan Williams Dona Nobis Pacem. In addition to singing and touring with The Perfect Gentlemen while winning the 2002 National A Cappella Championship, Jim is a freelance singer in Los Angeles, having recorded various commercial jingles and TV show themes. A featured soloist with the Pacific Symphony Pops and Santa Barbara Symphony, he has also sung with Pacific Chorale, Angeles Chorale and The LA Choral Artists. Musical theater credits include Kenickie in Grease, Action in West Side Story , Curly in Oklahoma!, and a soloist in Leonard Bernstein's Mass. On television Jim has sung on The Simpsons (Homer's Barbershop Quartet), Home Improvement, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (backup for Chet Atkins and also singing "Old Man River" while Jay Leno lip synched), That 70s Show, Gilmore Girls, Blossom and various Walt Disney specials. On film he has sung on Disney's The Haunted Mansion. Jim makes his home in Glendora, CA with his lovely wife Danae and their son Will.

2002 Harmony Sweeps winners Perfect Gentlemen's 3rd CD has 20 songs; some classic barbershop like 'Blue Skies,' 'The Good Old Days' and 'Diane,' and some non-traditional stuff like 'Gimme Some Skin,' 'Ukelele Lady,' 'If Ever I Would Leave You,' 'Java Jive,' 'Beware My Foolish Heart' and 'Room Service,' Some light guitar, piano and ukelele (but the emphasis remains on the rich harmonies) on songs like 'Java Jive,' 'Gimme Some Skin' and 'Room Service,' which we heard when they hosted the Sweeps Finals, where their sound reminded us of groups like the Hi-Lo's and 4 Freshmen. The Gents can make a barbershop chord ring with the best of them, but we like their tendency to try different, even accompanied stuff, like jive, swing and 50s jazz/pop. These guys are funny, versatile, flat-out great entertainers!

Style

Besides the expected great vocal harmony, there's some serious silliness on this CD. Lead Dan Jordan, tenor Tim Reeder, baritone Mike Economou and bass Jim Campbell take very little seriously, including barbershop, and that's what makes "In Style' a hoot! Take "Salute to the 20th Century" for instance. (Dramatic drumroll) "Ladies and Gents, the PG modestly present the entire 20th Century of popular music !" And they do it, singing "Shine On Harvest Moon" as Barbershop, Blues, Big Band, Doo-Wop,, Bluegrass, Disco and Rap - a tour-de-force that helped the PG take 2nd at this year's Harmony Sweepstakes. Standouts: "Style", "Turn Your Radio On" and "I Like Bananas". Very tasty.

"Live" In Paradise

The focus in the Barbershop world is excellence in live performance, and all of us in the audience of the 2002 Harmony Sweeps Finals were treated to one of the best, the set of LA's The Perfect Gentlemen. "Live" gives everyone else a chance to join the excited, appreciative audience enjoying the Gentlemen live in concert, at the historic Hawaii Theatre in Honolulu. (This would be a good time to warn purists that there is, not too surprisingly, some ukelele accompaniment in several of the songs). PG classics "Meanest Thing You Ever Did," "They Wrote 'Em in the Good Old Days," "Java Jive," "Room Service" and "I Want You to Be My Baby" all lead up to the Gents' hilarious masterpiece, "Salute to the 20th Century," with costumes, wigs, and musical renditions of "Shine On Harvest Moon" in everything from Barbershop and Dixieland to Blues, Big Band and Doo-Wop to Disco, Techno Punk and Rap. And believe us, you haven't lived until you've seen 4 kind of chubby barbershop guys in sunglasses, NFL jerseys and spats do a devastatingly funny takedown of Rap music. Great stuff!
