Aquabella : Kykellia

Review: Bremen, Germany-based 5-woman World a cappella group Aquabella, after impressing us with "Nani Dschann" and "Aquabella," bring us a unique Christmas CD, "Kykellia, or the Story of Christmas." 19 songs, some favorites are the rhythmic "Breaths," the spirited "Sneig Sniedzinis Putinaja," the chant-like "Vila Moma," a nicely-arranged "Wexford Carol," a latin-flavored "Los Reyes Magos" (with drum accompaniment), a bluenote "Noel nouvelet" that seques into a dance rhythm, the ringing chant "Schen char wenachi," the Maori song "Nga iwi e" (also with drums), and the moody "Shalom Aleikhem" and "Kling no, Klokka." Exotic, beautiful music in different languages, and from different cultures, that relates to the celebration of Christmas. Another winner from the sweet, harmonic voices of Aquabella!

Bulgarian Voices : Chants de Noel

Review: The Choir of Sofia, conducted by Ludmila Dimova, interprets the songs of Christmas in the tradition of the Bulgarian polyphonies. Between classical music and folk-world music of the eastern countries; like the successful Mysteries of the Bulgarian Voice with its antique, pre-Christian and Hellenistic roots, the Choir interprets with grace the songs of Western heritage: Silent Night, Tino Rossi's Petit Papa Noel, Jingle Bells, Schubert's Ave Maria and more. A new discovery of these Christmas songs' heritage for every age.

Songlist: Silent Night, Hey Maiden, A Virgin Is Bearing Today, Get Up, Host, Jingle Bells, Foom, Foom, Le Petit Papa Noel, It Will Snow, Ostinato, Dignity, Glorify, Ave Maria, In Suffers is Bearing Mother Mary, Many Years, The First Noel, Deck The Halls, We Wish You A Merry Christmas

Cor Madrigal Vocal Ensemble : Catalan Christmas Carols

Review: Since 1967 the Cor Madrigal commissions from a different composer each year the harmonization of a traditional Catalan Christmas carol. After many years this initiative has allowed the choir to compile an important archive of scores and has contributed to the updating and regeneration of these beautiful songs. The carols that make up this recording are all traditional Catalan melodies and presents a varied range from well-known carols and popular melodies to more elaborated compositions which, without losing the traditional essence, treat the works in a more modern setting. A very interesting and enjoyable recording!

Songlist: El Dimoni Escuat - Casanas, El Rabada - Oltra, El Petit Vailet - Pastrana, Les Besties Al Naixement - Sans, El Desembre Congelat - Vivancos, Sant Josep I La Mare De Deu - Jorda, Vos Sou La Meva Prendeta - Casanas, Fum Fum Fum - Cervera, Nit De Vitlla, Nadal - Bibiloni, Bressol De Nadal - Bibiloni, La Pastora Caterina - Marti, Del Cel Baixen - Oltra, Les Dotze Van Tocant - Just, Cap A Betlem Van Dos Minyons - Pastrana, Canco De Bressol - Pons, Ball Rodo - Mompou, El Pobre Alegre - Bonet, El Noi De La Mare - Cervera, Cap A Betlem Caminem - Marti, Deu Vos Guard Josep - Marti, Canco De L'infant - Oltra, El Cant Dels Ocells - Ribo, Pastors - Ben Alegres - Boliart, Cantem Al Xiquet - Gil-Tarrega

Don Cossack Choir : In Dulci Jubilo

Review: The Christmas concert, with Russian and German Christmas carols, was recorded in one of Germany's most beautiful Baroque churches. In addition to the well known sacred songs such as "In dulci jubilo" and Russian pieces like "Gospodie Pomuli", Wanja Hlibka delved deeply into the ways of both cultures. The a cappella version of "Es ist ein Ros entspungen", for example, enchanted the 1700 concert goers with the Kosaken's Russian melancholy..... a moving and grandiose experience. The church's interior, when one considers the basilica's dimensions, presents a challenge to a vocal ensemble. With a depth of over eighty meters, it requires the vocal power of the Russian operatic soloists comprising Wanja Hlibka's choir to elicit the necessary charisma from the vocally sophisticated arrangements and to captivate the audience in the way that they did. The atmosphere of the concert, dependent on the desired expression and dynamic, ranges from a peaceful, quiet, almost gentle honoring of the child in the manger to an enormous room-filling song of praise proclaiming the joy at the birth of the Redeemer.

Songlist: Credo, Neude Freude Ist Uber Uns Gekommen, Christus Ist Geboren, Gott Sei Mit Uns, In Dulci Jubilo, Oh Kommet Ihr Glaubigen, Tedeum Laudamus, Es Ist Ein Ros Entsprungen, Gospodie Pomilui, Sisser Die Glocken Nie Klingen, Russischer Weihnachtsgesang, Die Glocken Von Jerusalem, In Der Kirche, Leise Rieselt Der Schnee, Ich Bete An Die Macht Der Liebe

Kitka : Winter Songs

Review: This recording showcases material ranging from rousing Slavic folk carols and lush, meditative Eastern Orthodox sacred choral works, to pre-Christian incantations for the longest nights of the year and Hebrew folk songs for Chanukah. Highlights include Tec Peleite Zernju Zogtu, an ancient Latgalian (Eastern Latvian) Winter Solstice song invoking the god of the heavens and the goddess of the Sun; Koledni Pesni, a medley of Bulgarian folk carols recalling the nativity sung in the traditional antiphonal village style; and Byla Cesta, a poignant 19th-century Moravian carol. Other pieces include the sublime 12th-century Georgian hymn to the Virgin Shen Khar Venakhi; and a collection of joyful Shchedrivki, songs sung for the traditional Ukrainian New Year festival of Malanka. Wintersongs was recorded in the world-famous acoustic environment of the Skywalker Studios in Marin County by Leslie Ann Jones, and was produced by Grammy-nominated Bay Area vocalist and band leader Linda Tillery.

Lingonberries : Winter - Swedish Christmas Songs

Review: Swedish 3-woman, 1-man folk quartet The Lingonberries bring us their second sweet, melodic CD, "Swedish Christmas Songs." Twelve songs, (which has always seemed to us the best number for a Christmas CD) all sung in Swedish. But listening to "Jul, Jul" we realized that the language difference means very little here. There are a couple of carols we know, "Det Ar En Ros Utsprungen" (the traditional German carol "Lo How a Rose E'er Blooming") and "Stilla Natt/Silent Night." Listening to "Nar Det Lider Mot Jul," "Hosianna," ""Goder Afton," "Lusse Lella," "Nu Tandas Tusen Juleljus" or "Bereden Vag For Herran"--for the first time out of context, we would still know from the phrasing, and the feeling that comes through the singers that they are Christmas songs. Invite The Lingonberries and add an international flavor to your Christmas celebration!

Songlist: Glans Over Sjo Och Strand, Bereden Vag For Herran, Jul, Jul, Nar Det Lider Mot Jul, Glad Dig Du Kristi Brud, Det Ar En Ros Utsprungen, Hosianna, Stilla Natt / Silent Night, Adam Lay Ybounden, Im Herbst, Lusse Lella, Nu Tandas Tusen Juleljus

Rajaton : Joulu

Review: "Joulu" contains new and old Finnish Christmas music in Finnish only. All the liner notes and song titles are in Finnish, but the music speaks for itself quite eloquently. On this double album the first disc is a studio album with six new songs and five new arrangements of well known Christmas carols. Three of them are known globally: Jingle Bells, Christmas Song (by Mel Torme) and Silent Night. The second album was recorded in a church and contains both classical Finnish Christmas choral pieces by Sibelius, Madetoja, Palmgren and others and contemporary music as well as new arrangements of two traditionals. The three men and three women of Rajaton have a bright, smooth, confident, infectious sound that leaves us wanting to hear more. From the vocal trumpets on the opening cut "Joululaulu" and marvelous vocal percussion on "Pukki tietaa," to the sweet, soaring "En etsi valtaa, loistoa" and "Jouluhymni," each song is a perfect, harmonic jewel. We have been very impressed with previous Rajaton CDs, and "Joulu" is another recommended winner! Nice full-color individual photos of the group in the liner notes.

Songlist: Jouulaulu, Tonttu, Tahtilaulu, Ketun joululaulu, Pukki tietta, Kulkuset, Varpunen jouluaamuna, Talvi-iltana, Joulun neiet, Jouluyo, juhlayo, Joululaulu, Seimeen syntynyt, Jeesuslapsen joululahjat, Jeesuksen seimella, Ja neitsyt pikku poijuttansa, Joululaulu, Toivioretkella, En etsi valtaa, loistoa, Hiljene, maa, Vuotaa armo, taivaan ilo, Jouluhymni, Heinilla jarkien kaukalon

Seattle Pro Musica : Weihnachten - A German Christmas

Review: This large (76 mixed voices) award-winning (ASCAP Chorus America Award for Adventurous Programming of Contemporary Music) brings us a sumptuous collection of sacred Christmas music by composers from the 16th century (Praetorius, Philipp Nicolai, Heinrich Schutz), to the 19th century (Brahms, Mendelssohn, Bruckner, Franz Gruber's "Stille Nacht") to the 20th century (the seven movements of Hugo Distler's "Chorale Motets from Die Weihnachtsgeschichte," Franz Biebl's "Ave Maria"). Biebl's "Ave Maria." A timeless piece like Praetorius' "In dulci jubilo," with its beautiful, ringing harmonies, soars and amazes as it did when first performed four hundred years ago!

Solstice : Winter Solstice

Review: Veteran all-women septet, and one of our favorite World/Folk groups, we watched Solstice do the Bay Area proud by winning the Regional and placing 3rd in the 2007 National Finals. Urged by their friends and families to release a Holiday CD, the group finally and happily fulfilled this longtime dream, and Becca, Emily, Kim, Krista, Lark, Mari & Sara did it wonderfully! Choosing little-known, difficult classical tunes like Cortland Bender's lovely "Rosa Mystica," Francisco Guerrero's "A Un Nino Llorando Al Hielo" and Thomas Weelkes' "To Shorten Winter's Sadness," from the 15th and 16th centuries; beautifully arranged traditional carols like Bernard de la Monnoye's "Patapan," "Deck the Hall," and Franz Gruber's "Silent Night;" and popular Christmas songs like Vince Guaraldi's "Christmas Time is Here," Tommie Connor's "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" and Alfred Burt's "Caroling, Caroling;" along with the rich traditional Hebrew song "S'Vivon" and other favorites, make "Winter Solstice" a very special 15-cut collection that is sure to brighten your holiday for years to come!

Songlist: Nowell, Nowell, Out of Your Sleep, Deck the Hall, S'Vivon, Rosa Mystica, Corpus Christi Carol, Patapan, Nova, Nova, Ave Fit Ex Eva, Christmas Time is Here, Tyrley, Tyrlow!, I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus, A Un Nino Llorando Al Hielo, Caroling, Caroling, Jul, Jul, To Shorten Winter's Sadness, Silent Night

Tapiola Children's Choir : Tapiola Choir Christmas

Review: Over three decades have passed since the founding of the Tapiola Choir, then known as the Tapiola Children's Choir. Shortly after their founding, in 1973 they released "Tapiolan Joulu" ("Christmas With Tapiola"). If you have ever heard that classic album you can't help but be moved by the bell-like chime and purity of the children's voices. On this new Christmas recording the Tapiola Choir, long since recognized as an international treasure, creates a richer, more mature sound with the addition of a couple of dozen young adult voices belonging to the 'seniors.' The choir's founder, Prof. Erkki Pohjola wished to share the experience of creating this recording with former members because this is to be his last as conductor and director of the choir. Additionally, the breadth of the arrangements was enhanced by use of orchestration which never occludes the beauty of the choir and special guest Jorma Hynninen, the celebrated Finnish operatic baritone. The recording begins with an a cappella version of the Australian folk song, "Mary, Handmaiden of the Lord" which was the first three part song ever sung by the original "Choir of the Lower Forms of Tapiola Secondary School." Progressively the song list increases in festivity, youthful fun predominates, and then imperceptibly the feeling returns to the original spirit of Christmas until, finally the choir closes the recording with the a cappella "At Christmas, God Came on Earth." This beautiful recording is not only a testimonial to the young singers of Tapiola but a superb passing of the musical baton to the new conductor, Kari Ala-Pollanen.

Songlist: Maria, Herran piikanen, God Rest You Merry Gentlemen, O Holy Night / Oi, jouluyo, The Joy of Giving, Kulkuset fantasia / Fantasy on Jingle Bells, Tonttujen joulukuusi / Elves around the Christmas Tree, Nigra sum / I Am Black, Noel des enfants qui n'ont plus de maisons, Kuului laulu enkelten, Go, Tell It on the Mountain, Foudu, satakiel, Katso, ihme taivainen, En etsi valtaa, Ioistoa, Maa on niin kaunis, Jouluna Jumala syntyi, Joulukranssi kuudella kielella, - Joulun kellot / Softly, Softly, - Nu tandas tusen juleljus / A Thousand Candles Burning Bright, - Tiliseb tiliseb aisakell / Jingling, Jingling Sleigh Bells Ring, - Leise rieselt der Schnee / Silent Sleeps the Singing Snow, - Mele kalikimaka, - Entre le boeuf.../There in the Hay of the Ox's Stall, - Arkihuolesi kaikki heita / Cast off Thy Everyday Cares

Trapp Family Singers : Christmas with the Trapp Family Singers

Review: Who doesn't know the dramatic and true story of the Von Trapp Family, who escaped from their Austrian homeland under the Nazi occupation? This singing family relocated to America, where they performed and recorded for many years. No novelty act, the ensemble, under the direction of conductor Dr. F. Wasner, sings first-rate a cappella arrangements (with the exception of "Ihr Kinderlein Kommet") of European carols, such as the Italian "La Canzone Di Natale," the Tyrolean "Es Hat Sich Heut Eroffnet" and the Polish "Shepherds Come A-Running." Some of these melodies will be familiar to American audiences, but some will not, which is part of their charm. This 1950's era mono recording is clean, present, and immediate; the vocal blend of the group is so natural and perfectly pitched, it requires nothing to complete it.

Songlist: Deck the Halls, Es Ist Ein Ros Entsprungen, Hirten, Wachet Auf!, Zu Bethlehem Geboren, A La Nanita Nana, El Est Ne, Le Divin Enfant, La Canzone Di Natale, Es Hat Sich Heut Eroffnet, Jesus, Jesus, Rest Your Head, Shepherds Come A-Running, Lobt Gott Ihr Christen All Gleich, Es Wird Scho Glei Dumpa, Nu Ar Det Jul Igen, Ihr Kinderlein Kommet, Der Scheibendudler, Carol of the Drum, Deine Wangelen, Weihnachtslied (Silent Night)

Review: Ukranian Christmas Carols - Kolyadky - (1 - 11) are sung from Christmas Eve - January 6 (according to the Julian Calendar) to Epiphany on January 19. These songs can be traced to pagan times. With the introduction of Christianity in Ukraine in 988, pagan songs were replaced by Christian carols and hymns. These delightful folk songs with their charming rhythmic melodies, express wishes for health, wealth and happiness.

Voz en Punto : Mexico en Navidad

Review: Three-Man, two women a cappella ensemble from Mexico, Voz en Punto is a spirited, talented quintet with fine harmonies, arrangements and a nice, clean sound, and the extensive liner notes have all lyrics and lots of info about the group. Unfortunately for this English speaker, all this information, as well as everything on all the websites about the group we found, is in Spanish. But certain things are pretty clear: There are 18 cuts and most of the material is traditional and sacred music, for example Tomas Luis de Victoria's "Ave Maria," Hernando Franco's "Sancta Maria," "Dios Itlaconantzine," "Jesos de mi goracon," "Eso rigor e repente" and "Mano fasiquivo." Some of it is funny in a manic sort of way; examples of this are Jose Galvan's "Navidad mexicana," "El nacimiento," "Elintercambio" and Son Veracruzano's "El tilingo navideno." The bottom line is, Voz makes fine harmonies, looks young and attractive, has a good sense of humor, and judging by the number of websites about them, has a legion of appreciative fans!

Songlist: Las posadas, Arrullo, Oiga morenita, Navidad mexicana, Letania, Ave Maria, Sancta Maria, Dios Itlaconantzine, Jesos de mi goracon, Eso rigor e repente, Mano fasiquiyo, Nochpochtzine, A wue la gusto, Por el valle de rosas, El nacimiento, El intercambio, El tilingo navideno

Ken Berg : Three Estonian Carols

Review: Fun settings of a traditional Estonian carols, these secular winter-themed songs reflects on the joys of winter and skating in a gentle waltz feel. Brisk and energetic songs with simple melody, limited ranges and shared rhythmic patters make them enjoyable for high school mixed choirs.. In Estonian, with a pronunciation guide and a singing English translation, this suits both beginning and more advanced mixed choirs, with quick and easy preparation for both choir and accompanist. Both Estonian and English text.

Songlist: Ule Lume Lagedale (Over Snowy Winter Roads), Skating (Uisutamas), Little Tommy's Choir

Various Arrangers : A Cappella Carols from Around The World

Review: "The Stone House Carol" is based on the old French Carol, "Noel Nouvelet" and has a beautiful melody and words. By joining this with the English Language Easter Carol version, it was possible to write a piece meditating on the Greatest Love (and Sacrifice) of all. After a short mysterioso introduction the main theme is stated three times, at first tentatively, then triumphantly. The final verse returns to the sense of awe and mystery of the introduction, ending with a musical question mark that is perhaps testing our response to the words being uttered. The two popular Swedish Christmas Carols, "Nu Ar Detv Jul Igen" and "Na Juldagsmorgon Glimmar", capture complementary aspects of the Christmas spirit. Nu Ar Detv Jul Igen is in the style of the Hambo, one of the most popular of Swedish folk dances. At Christmas time, the Hambo is danced around the Yule tree by children gaily singing these playful verses. Nar Juldagsmorgon Glimmar is a more expressive carol, filled with the magic of Jesus' birth in the humble manger. Throughout the arrangement, the dance carol should be sung lightly and accented, with a dancing buoyancy. Nar Juldagsmorgon Glimmar should be sung legato with expressive lines and should never be covered by the quicker carol. "Joulupuu on Rakennetu" is a Finnish carol and two Norman Lubuff arrangements makes this a great collection.

Songlist: Haitian Noel, Two Swedish Carols, Gloucestershire Wassail, Whence Comes This Rush Of Wings, Joulupuu on Rakennetu, The Stone House Carol

Various Arrangers : Caribbean Christmas

Review: Escape to a tropical paradise this Christmas with this happy holiday song! Bright Caribbean rhythms and buoyant melodies add a special sparkle. "Haitian Noel" - The Haitian folk carol is in the style of a Merengue and will give your concert Caribbean sparkle! A pronunciation guide is provided for the Creole lyrics and English lyrics are also included. "The Virgin Mary Had A Baby Boy" - This arrangement explores the Caribbean style known as "Afro-Cuban": independent melodic lines with strong rhythmic pulses are superimposed to build up textures that are both rich and translucent. Every section of the choir is spot-lit; every section gets its turn to lead. The piece would especially suit a choir in search of something seasonal but upbeat which is not a "novelty number."

Songlist: Jamaican Noel, Caribbean Christmas Holiday, A Cuban Carol, The Virgin Mary Had A Baby Boy

Noted choral arranger John Bertalot with a delightful arrangement of " Calypso Carol". The traditional Spanish carol " Fum, Fum, Fum" highlights the night of Jesus' birth in joyful celebration! Light vocal style is highlighted by the placement of an "extra" quarter rest! Fresh! The joyful Filipino Christmas Carol "Pasko Na Naman: is a welcome addition to the season. San Francisco conductor and arranger George Hernandez, has masterfully arranged a simple SATB, a cappella setting that simply works!. High school, college and community choirs will love this piece.

Various Arrangers : Christmas South of the Border

Review: Add a multi-cultural element to your Christmas concerts and celebrate the Navidad season. The Mexican tradition of ""La Fiesta de la Posada"" recreates the search for a room at an inn. This delightful number by Sally Albrecht recreates that tradition in song with an English text that tells the story ("when we light luminarias and swing at the pinata."). Features an optional solo/duet in each verse. "Cantemos" is a beautiful, rhythmic Venezuelan folk carol with an English/Spanish text. "Vamos todos a Belen" - A detailed translation/pronunciation guide makes it easy to master the Spanish text of this traditional Mexican-American Christmas song, or perform it in English. Lilting six-eight piano creates a gentle rocking motion as we sing about going to Bethlehem to see the baby. In the middle, a solo is briefly accompanied by only the chorus before a thrilling modulation and final flourish to the glorious end.

Songlist: La Fiesta de la Posada, El Pequeno Nino (The Tiny Baby), Cantemos, Vamos todos a Belen (Let Us Go to Bethlehem)

Various Arrangers : Spanish Carols

Review: A fine collection of unaccompanied Spanish Christmas carols with both English and Spanish text along with a pronunciation guide. The Emily Crocker arrangements, as always, are delightful and are most rewarding in performance. The King's Singers arrangements of three traditional carols are a special treat and the Norman Luboff arrangement of "A La Nanita Nana" is from his Holiday hit album "Songs of Christmas". Rounding out the collection are three arrangements of sixteenth century carols from the New York Pro Musica series.

Songlist: Three Spanish Carols, Three Spanish Carols, Pastores a Belen, Que Regalo? (What Shall I Bring?), Spanish Shepherds' Song, Over All The Land, E La Don Don Verges Maria, Riu, Riu, Chiu, Dadme albricias, hijos d'Eva, Riu, Riu, Chiu: El Lobo Rabioso, Adorar al Nino (Come Adore The Baby)

Various Arrangers : Spanish Carols, Lullabies and Folksongs

Review: "Come, come, shepherds let us go! Let's run to Bethlehem." Written in the "Bambuco Fiestero" rhythm of the Andes Mountains of Columbia, the characteristic dance rhythm of 6/8 against 3/4 is the main feature of this a cappella setting. In Spanish, with English translation. "Canticos De Navidad" - Juan Orrego-Sala, a noted Latin American composer, is Professor Emeritis of Composition and Latin American Music at the Indiana University School of Music. This charming set of Christmas pieces reflects his native country, Chile, not only in the language, but in the characteristic rhythms and harmonies. The second of the three, Alleluya, can be extracted for year-round performance, and, although diminutive in length, deserves a place along side the well-known "Alleluia" by Randall Thompson with whom the composer studied. The original settings of "Four Spanish Lullabies" create the feeling of tenderness and sorrow so typical of the Spanish lullaby. A litling Brazilian style lullaby, a 3-part a cappella chorus, a flight of imagination and a comical nursery rhyme make up this compelling set. The energetic Colombian folksong "Maquerule" tells the tale of a friendly baker who learns the hard way to collect the cash upfront! Strong syncopation and a staccato singing section add to the fun. Includes suggestions for using optional percussion.

Songlist: Canticos De Navidad, Maquerule, Four Spanish Lullabies, Fum, Fum, Fum
