The Way We Were

Music by Marvin Hamlisch

"The Way We Were" is the title song to the 1973 movie The Way We Were, starring Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford. The song was written by Alan Bergman and Marilyn Bergman (lyrics) and Marvin Hamlisch (music) and performed by Streisand.

Billboard named "The Way We Were" as the number 1 pop hit of 1974. Instrumental backing was provided by L.A. session musicians from the Wrecking Crew. The song won the Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song, Grammy Award for Song of the Year. In 1998, the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and finished at number 8 on AFI's 100 Years...100 Songs survey of top tunes in American cinema in 2004. It was also included in the list of Songs of the Century, by the Recording Industry Association of America and the National Endowment for the Arts.

"The Way We Were" topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart for three non-consecutive weeks in February 1974. After its first week at number one it was replaced by "Love's Theme" by the Love Unlimited Orchestra; by coincidence, the orchestra, also abbreviated as LUO, did a version of "The Way We Were" on their 1979 album Super Movie Themes: Just a Little Bit Different. It then returned to number one for two more weeks. The song also spent two weeks atop the easy listening chart, Streisand's second single to reach the top of this chart (following 1964's "People"). The track peaked at #31 in the UK Singles Chart in 1974.

The version of the song released on 45 RPM single contains a different vocal take than the version which appeared on the original movie soundtrack and subsequent greatest hits compilations. Both versions use the same music track; the difference in the vocals can easily be heard on the line "Smiles we gave to one another" at approximately 1:15 into the song. The true 45 RPM single version has never appeared on CD. The soundtrack version of the song, a completely different take with alternate music track, appears on Just For the Record, Streisand's 4-CD box set collection released in 1991.

Cantabile - The London Quartet : Tribute To Hollywood : 1 CD : 6310

Cantabile - The London Quartet : Tribute To Hollywood onsale

One of the UK's finest vocal groups, Bill, Paul, Mark and Michael of Cantabile, The London Quartet, have a unique and unmistakable sound and a reputation for originality and humor. Although the group was founded as a purely a cappella student group, the sixteen cuts of "A Tribute to Hollywood" are mostly accompanied, with the exception of two tunes, Harold Arlen's "Over the Rainbow" and the theme from the Streisand/Redford classic "The Way We Were." "As Time Goes By" and Stephen Sondheim's "Sooner or Later" are piano accompanied; and Herman Hupfeld's "Take My Breath Away" is accompanied by guitar. "Up Where We Belong," Sondheim/Bernstein's "Gee, Officer Krupke" from "West Side Story," the Gershwins' "I Got Rhythm," "Under the Sea" from "The Little Mermaid," and the classic "Lullaby of Broadway" are all orchestrally accompanied. That aside, we loved this dynamic, entertaining collection, with plenty of the sweet leads and harmonies, humor, eclecticism and big fun of Cantabile!

Songlist: Up Where We Belong, As Time Goes By, Everybody's Talkin', Take My Breath Away, Evergreen, I Just Called To Say I Love You, 'Round Midnight, Iko Iko, Over The Rainbow, Gee, Officer Krupke, Cavatina, I Got Rhythm, Sooner or Later, Under The sea, The Way We Were, Lullaby of Broadway

1973 International Quartet Champions Dealer's Choice recorded this CD just prior to their appearance at the British Association of Barbershoppers Convention in 1978. Featuring a nice mix of traditional barbershop and pop tunes, such as a Simon & Garfunkel medley and the quintessential hankie-wringing movie theme, "The Way We Were," the group also includes the tongue-in-cheek "Ain't She Sweet," and "Chloe," which begins subtly and then gradually swells into a broad chorus, followed by its apogee, the tag-the defining moment for any manly barbershop contingent!

Songlist: Have A Little Talk With Myself, Chloe, Simon & Garfunkel Medley, Shenandoah, I Can't Give You Anything But Love, The Way We Were, Yes Indeed!, Contest Up-Tune Medley, Together, Ain't She Sweet?, This Is All I Ask

This is two very big slices of classic Barbershop, a 2-CD set of Grandma's Boys from 1968 to 1986, including songs from their 1979 Gold Medal Year as SPEBSQSA International Quartet Champions. Masters Of Harmony : The Way We Were : 1 CD : Mark Hale

Masters Of Harmony : The Way We Were

For the 15 years of its existence, The Masters of Harmony has been the toast of the barbershop chorus world, winning the coveted SPEBSQSA gold medal five times-whoops, make that six with their 2005 triumph in Salt Lake City! This, and "The Way We Were" are proof that the best keep getting better. A walk down memory lane from their winning performances under 3 directors, Mark Hale, Jeff Oxley and Brett Littlefield, this collection of 14 winners also includes signature songs from the Masters' four international champion quartets, Nightlife, Revival, Michigan Jake and Gotcha!, all with close ties to the group. OC Times : Destinations : 1 CD

OC Times : Destinations

"Destinations" is the second well-crafted album by Lead Sean Devine (formerly of one of our favorite groups, the Alley Cats), Tenor Shawn York, Baritone Patrick Claypool and Bass Cory Hunt of Orange County, CA-based OC Times. When we reviewed their debut album "Let's Fly" they had just won Silver (2nd Place) medals at the 2007 SPBSQSA International Quartet competition in Denver. We called them "the fast-rising future of Barbershop," and we were so right, in 2008 they won Gold! After that came a national and international tour that covered 33 states and 9 countries, from Madrid, Spain and St. Petersburg, Russia to Helsinki, Finland and Aukland, New Zealand. Returning home, OCT made their next Destination a recording studio to record their 14 favorite tunes, most arranged by their friend Aaron Dale. Some favorites are Freddie Mercury of Queen's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," a pair by Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, "Surfer Girl" and "Fun, Fun, Fun;" Howard Steiner/Buddy Kaye's "Don't Be a Baby, Baby," William Trader's "Fool Such As I," Randy Newman's "I Will Go Sailing No More," Billy Rose/Mabel Wayne's "It Happened in Monterey," Alan & Marilyn Bergman/Marvin Hamlisch's poignant "The Way We Were" and the live cut "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You" by Maurice Mysels/Ira Kosloff. Each of these cuts is a little Barbershop masterpiece, brought home to us by consummate entertainers OC Times, and "Destinations" is big fun from beginning to end!

Songlist: Oh Look At Me Now, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Surfer Girl, Fun. Fun, Fun, Don't Be a Baby, Baby, Be My Baby Tonight, Dream a Little Dream of Me, You Belong to Me, Fool Such As I, I Will Go Sailing No More, It Happened In Monterey, The Way We Were, Unbelievable, I Want You, I Need You, I Love You

Side Street Ramblers : Encore! : 2 CDs

Side Street Ramblers : Encore!

Formed in 1975, the Side Street Ramblers went through an epic journey to winning the SPEBSQSA Quartet Gold in 1983, having to replace their lead singer three times and such hurdles as a case of the flu that turned their bass into a tenor. But Keith Houts, tenor, Brian Beck, lead, Dennis Malone, baritone, and Earl Hagn, bass, were nothing if not focused and persistent, as the many costume changes in the colorful liner notes show. With the trophy in hand, the group went on to perform in 34 states and 12 foreign countries and become one of the best-loved barbershop groups of all time. "Encore" is a 2-CD set, which includes 30 great SSR classics. The guys are equally adept at cracking us up, tugging on our heartstrings or knocking us back in our seats with a ringing barbershop chord. Hard to pick favorites among the 30, as each is a gem, but here goes: "Only Yesterday," "Love to Meet That Old Sweetheart," "My Blue Heaven," "I Wonder What's Become of Sally," "The Way We Were," "Hello Broadway," "Let Me Call You Sweetheart," "Short People," "1927 Kansas City," "Smile Medley," "Proud to Be an American," "Bye Bye, Blackbird" and "All of Me." Now, that's entertainment. Encore!

Voices in Harmony : Now & Then : 1 CD

Voices in Harmony : Now & Then

Founded in 2006 by members of the Bay Area Metro Chorus and Garden City Chorus of San Jose CA, VIH is directed by world-renowned conductor Dr. Greg Lynn. "Northern California's Premier Men's A Cappella Chorus" boasts a membership of 131, from ages 16 to 99, and they recently returned from their first international tour, of Russia in August, 2009. Dr. Lynn very quickly turned Voices in Harmony into one of the finest a cappella choruses in the world, winning a 3rd Place Bronze medal at the Barbershop Harmony Society's 2008 International Choral Competition in Nashville, TN. The 14 songs of "Now & Then" are pure, heartstring-tugging oldies, sung by guys who love to harmonize together-in short, the very stuff of which Barbershop was made! Be it The Turtles' "Happy Together" from 1966, the Swing hit "Beyond the Sea" from 1945, the Streisand hit "The Way We Were" from 1974, Hank Williams' classic "Hey Good Lookin'" from 1951, Brian Wilson's anthem "Surfer Girl" from 1963 or Jerome Kern and and Otto Harbach's "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" from 1933-we know and love these songs. How many times have we heard Billy Joel's "And So It Goes," "Little Boy Lost," "There Used To Be a Ballpark Right Here" and "This Is Some Lucky Day"-and how many times would we like to hear them again, nailed by a top-drawer men's chorus? As a special treat, the last three bonus tracks on "Now & Then," "Diane," "Little Pal" and "In A Shanty in Old Shanty Town" are all live cuts from the 2008 BHS competition. Barbershop quartets Late Show and Realtime are special guest performers with VIH. Great stuff from local boys who made very good, very fast in the Barbershop world!

Songlist: Happy Together, Beyond the Sea, The Way We Were, Little Boy Lost, Hey Good Lookin', Surfer Girl - Late Show Quartet, There Used to Be a Ballpark Right Here, This Is Some Lucky Day, And So It Goes, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, With A Little Help From My Friends, Diane, Little Pal, In a Shanty in Old Shanty Town

Barbra Streisand : One Voice : Solo : DVD : 603497044528 : RHI970445DVD

Barbra Streisand : One Voice

Originally broadcast as an exclusive special on HBO, Barbra Streisand launched her September 6, 1986 concert One Voice, in part, as a protest against Reagan-era nuclear arms proliferation in the late Cold War; the event marked the diva's first official live performance since 1972. Streisand and co. staged the endeavor in the artist's own backyard, beneath an open sky, with tickets originally going for $5,000.00 per and such celebrities as Chevy Chase in attendance, but the concert can now be enjoyed again and again by audiences everywhere in this first-time home video issue. The gig features a once-in-a-lifetime lineup of guest performers in addition to Streisand, including a routine by shtickmeister Robin Williams and musical support from giants Barry Gibb, Burt Bacharach, Carole Bayer Sager and Richard Marx. The video serves as a companion piece to Streisand's April 1987 album of the same live performance. Tracks include: "Somewhere," "Evergreen (Love theme from Star is Born)" "Something's Coming," "People," "Send in the Clowns," "Over the Rainbow," "Papa, Can You Hear Me?" (from Yentl), "The Way We Were," "It's a New World," "Happy Days Are Here Again," "America the Beautiful," and two duets with Gibb, "Guilty" and the showstopper "What Kind of Fool," both culled from the 1980 StreisandGibb album, Guilty.
