Deke Sharon : A Cappella Jazz Classics

This five-song volume includes songs your jazz ensemble will love to sing! Each of these songs is a classic on its own, and in the hands of master a cappella arranger Deke Sharon they become true vocal jazz classics. "Always" is 4-part SATB, with the melody passing among the parts. "Blue Skies" is Sop/Mezzo/Alto/Tenor/Bass, with the Alto written as "optional" (in case you need to sing it with just four parts) and includes a scat break. "Oh What A Beautiful Morning" is scored for SATB with a baritone solo - a very cool jazz waltz! Everyone gets a turn in "Route 66," both with the melody and little scat opportunities. Finally, "What'll I Do" is a gorgeous 4-part rubato ballad spiced with plaintive triplets echoing the refrain in thebackground. A real winner!

Songlist: Always, Blue Skies, Oh, What A Beautiful Mornin', What'll I Do, Route 66

Various Arrangers : Singers Book Of Jazz Standards (Mens Edition)

All fifty arrangements of jazz standards in this book are written in a single line "fake book" or "lead sheet" format. However, they are not just the standard renditions of the songs. All are custom arrangements, logical suggestions for repeated sections, and simple but stylish song endings. The chords below the lines are the traditional harmonies. The chords above the line are more advanced, alternate harmonies. A musician using these arrangements may use just one set of these chord changes, or a mixture of them within a song.

Acoustix : Jazz, Jazz, Jazz : 1 CD

Acoustix : Jazz, Jazz, Jazz

Rewarding loyal fans after years of anticipation, Acoustix presents a cache of songs guaranteed to please a wide variety of listeners. Their opening statement, the title tune "Jazz, Jazz, Jazz," is performed in homage to the greats of the era: Nat, Benny, Frank, and of course, the Four Freshmen, to whom Acoustix pay tribute throughout this album. This is not music for barbershop fans only, though the characteristic purity of the voices and seventh chords endemic to the genre are still very much in evidence. Indeed, five of the songs feature orchestral accompaniment in the big band style: "Jazz, Jazz, Jazz," "Day by Day," "Poinciana," "Graduation Day/It's a Blue World" and "Route 66." Guest vocalists Jim Clancy, Greg Clancy and Wendy Wilson DeCrow (of Vocal Majority) augment the much-anticipated Gene Puerling arrangement of "Unforgetable" (Jim and Greg) and "The Nearness of You." (Other arrangements on the CD were done by the renowned Greg Volk.) The closing medley of Simon and Garfunkel hits reveals yet another side of this amazing quartet's range and prowess.

Songlist: Jazz, Jazz, Jazz, Shine on Your Shoes/Steppin' Out with My Baby Medley, Day by Day, Answer Me, My Love, Straighten Up and Fly Right, Orange Colored Sky, The Nearness of You, Pionciana, Unforgettable, Graduation Day/It's a Blue World Medley, All the Way, Route 66, Simon & Garfunkel Montage

This Colorado-based evenly-mixed voice a cappella octet was formed in 1999, and has a varied repertoire ranging from Jazz to Pop, Classical and Gospel to Folk. "Beyond Ordinary's" 14 cuts highlight this versatility, beginning with Stefan Farrenkopf's deadpan "Easter Island Head," Jesse Harris' moody "Don't Know Why," Charles Sylvestri and Eric Whitacre's brooding , dissonant "Sleep," the nice Derric Johnson-arranged "Railroad Medley," a bluesy, rhythmic "Route 66," traditional favorites "Amazing Grace" and "Ezekiel Saw de Wheel," Greg Jasperse's ethereal "Voice Dance," Lennon/McCartney's "Lady Madonna," the Moses Hogan-arranged spiritual "Elijah Rock," and finishing strong with the traditional "All Creatures of Our God and King." DACP has three excellent recordings and years of live performances under their belts, and it shows. Sweet harmonies, solid vocal percussion, deep basslines, spirited leads-this is fun stuff from this talented octet!

The Four Freshmen : Day By Day

Recorded in 1962 as part of a Public Service series sponsored by the U.S. Navy for radio broadcast, this recording includes many the Four Freshmen standards-"Day By Day," "Their Hearts Were Full Of Spring," "Route 66"-as well as some lesser known songs. Their trademark voicings made the group a popular favorite; they recorded over twenty albums for Capitol alone! Their likeable onstage persona can be heard on "Once In Love With Amy," a novelty number that sounds like singer Ross Barbour is on helium. "Somebody Loves Me" and "Taps Miller" are swung at a speed that is vivace going on dangerous-"Taps" features a challenging scat performance, while "Somebody Loves Me" has a rubato turn of phrase that is a clever device.

The Manhattan Transfer : Very Best Of

Few groups have a more distinguished pedigree than the Transfer. Since their formation in New York in 1972, these four voices (two male, two female) have notched up numerous gold and platinum albums, and accumulated a shelf full of Grammy's. Their performance of "A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square" (included here) won a Grammy for its Gene Puerling arrangement. With collaborators Jon Hendricks and Richie Cole, they promulgated the use of the vocalese technique-singing lyrics over jazz solos. They had their biggest hit of their career, with "Boy From New York City," in 1981, when it went to number seven. "Route 66" and "Tuxedo Junction" were made famous by Nat King Cole and Glenn Miller respectively ("Route 66" won the group yet another Grammy in 1983). "Birdland" was originally recorded by Weather Report; with the addition of Jon Hendricks' lyrics, a Transfer classic was born. This is required listening for vocal jazz fans.

This is a very relaxed and smooth-flowing recording and a pleasant change to hear these old chestnuts performed in a fresh style.

Songlist: Route 66, Candy, Embraceable You, That's The Way It Goes, A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square, Because You Are All Heart, To You, Vibrate, Clouds (Nuages), The Quietude, The Offbeat of Avenues, Birdland

Nightlife : Basin St Blues : 1 CD

Nightlife : Basin St Blues

Let us have Dr. Greg Lyne tell you about the voices of Nightlife. "Brett (Littlefield) possesses one of the most resonant, rich bass voices you're ever going to hear, which contributes to the depth so characteristic of the Nightlife sound. Jeff's (Baker) voice brings the glue and dignity to the composite sound that all outstanding quartets seek. John's (Sasine) voice is unusually free and agile, which is also the key to the quartet's individually of expression. Finally, it is the color and presence found in Rob's tenor voice that contributes the sheen to this foursome's distinctive sound." True, true. Now listen to "Creole Cutie," "Route 66," "Beautiful Dreamer" (beautiful!), "Smile" and another eleven songs. Celebrate their Championship with them!

Songlist: 'Cross the Mason-Dixon Line, Creole Cutie, Stars Fell on Alabama, Route 66, Beautiful Dreamer, It Must Be That Look in Her Eyes/Them There Eyes Medley, It Never Occured to Me, Rhythm Medley, You're As Welcome As the Flowers in May, This Is My Lucky Day/Luck Be A Lady Tonight Medley, Basin Street Blues, I Love You For Sentimental Reasons, Sailin' Away on the Henry Clay, Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence, Smile

Soundstage : In House : 1 CD

Soundstage : In House

2010 Harmony Sweeps Los Angeles Regional Winner SoundStage is a talented mixed voice (4 men, 2 women) Contemporary a cappella sextet who drew a huge ovation with great harmonies and lead at the recent Sweeps Finals in San Rafael. "In House" has 15 excellent covers of Pop, Rock, Show, Jazz and Soul tunes, all arranged by group member Bradley Hampton. Some favorites are the Spencer Davis Group hit "Gimme Some Lovin'," Lennon/McCartney's "Good Day Sunshine," a jazzy rendition of the classic "Route 66," Harold Arlen's "Over the Rainbow," Slocum's "Kiss Me," and a pair of originals, Hampton's "On Your Way Back Home" and (with group member Kyle Bowen) "Everybody Needs Some Love." Other favorites are Aretha Franklin's R&B anthem "Respect," Yancy/Jackson's "This Will Be (an Everlasting Love)" and McNaughton's "Love at Home." SoundStage's live show is as dynamic and exciting as they come, and "In House" is an impressive, finely-crafted debut CD. We loved it, and are expecting big things from fast-rising SoundStage!

Songlist: Get On Your Feet, Gimme Some Lovin', Good Day Sunshine, Route 66, Wink and a Smile, Over The Rainbow, I Love You, On Your Way Back Home, Everybody Needs Some Love, Think / Respect, Kiss Me, Love Will Keep Us Alive, This Will Be, Put A Little Love In Your Heart, Love at Home

Toxic Audio : Captive Audience : 1 CD

Toxic Audio : Captive Audience

This phenomenally talented mixed quintet just "captured" the 2000 Harmony Sweepstakes, and the fourteen songs on this CD show exactly how they did it. Recorded in front of a live audience, this Florida based group, who earns their bread and butter at Disney World, absolutely tear up the floorboards. With material that is mostly popular - "Lean On Me," "Turn The Beat Around" and "Come Together" - their style is emphatically jazz-inflected, as are many of their arrangements, most of which are their own (though they include two by Yumiko Matsuoka-Young, Vox One's alto and one of the finest arrangers in a cappella). However, it's as performers that Toxic Audio dominate. Their professionalism and confidence are apparent, and they get inside each song and exploit every nuance. They have the experience to go for it, and the savvy to back it up. Co-produced by Jeff Thacher of Rockapella.

Songlist: Sound Check, Walk the Dinosaur, Route 66, Super Groovy Alphabet Soup, Come Together, Thriller, 50 Ways, ...Baby One More Time, Abracadabra / You Can Do Magic, It's Too Late, Angelina, The Water Is Wide, Lean On Me, Turn the Beat Around

Toxic Audio : Word Of Mouth : 1 CD : 94775

Toxic Audio : Word Of Mouth

First launching its quirky show at the 1998 Orlando International Fringe Festival, where they caught the attention of Disney executives who hired them as featured performers at Disney/MGM Studios, Toxic Audio began making major waves in the a cappella world in 2000 with a stunning win at the Harmony Sweeps Finals in San Rafael, CA. Their CD "Chemistry" was named 2003 CASA' Album of the Year. After national TV appearances with Ed McMahon and Wayne Brady, the group won the 2004 Drama Desk Award for "Unique Theatrical Experience for their Off-Broadway Show in New York's John Houseman Theatre. "Word of Mouth" is essentially a "Best of Toxic Audio 1998-2004" CD, which features tracks from their previous releases in addition to "Chemistry," "Captive Audience," and "Toxic Audio," as well as 6 new tracks recorded exclusively for "Word." 13 songs, and a list of favorites would have to include a pair of amazing originals written by group members Jeremy and Shalisa, "Caffeine" and "Putting Words in My Mouth," who also sing lead on them; a funky, salsa-flavored "(Put the Lime in the) Coconut;" an ethereal, soaring arrangement of "Stand By Me," a pair of Lennon/McCartney winners, "Why Don't We Do It In The Road" and "All I've Got to Do," one of the best live covers of "Route 66" we've ever heard, the group's live concert favorite "Turn the Beat Around," a bluesy-jazzy "If I Only Had A Brain" with a sweet, meandering lead by Paul; and a boogying "You Can't Stop The Beat" from the Broadway musical "Hairspray." One of the most dynamic live shows we've seen, at the Sweeps and at the A Cappella Summit, Toxic Audio makes equally wonderful CDs, and this is their best yet, "Word!"

Songlist: Caffeine, (Put The Lime In The) Coconut, Splanky, Bring Me To Life, Stand By Me, Why Don't We Do It In The Road, All I Gotta Do, Route 66, Putting Words In My Mouth, Turn The Beat Around, Voices Carry, If I Only Had A Brain, You Can't Stop The Beat

The professionalism of the competing groups becomes more impressive with each passing year! Each and every ensemble that graces the stage with their talent has something special, and each group is distinct in its own way. Of course the contemporary and jazz groups are always popular - and in fact, Toxic Audio, the contemporary/jazz quintet from Florida, took first place, and another mixed jazz quintet, Bay Area favorites +4 db, were third - but, in addition, we feature the Perfect Gentlemen, a barbershop group from Los Angeles (2nd place), and the Total Experience Gospel Choir. Of course, 1999 champs, and your hosts, the contemporary Christian septet, Seven, perform two songs, and their virtuosity is undeniable. Audience favorites the Exboyfriends (who have won this category in previous New York regionals, flexing their performance muscles), swagger with Led Zeppelin's "Ramble On," while the reconstituted All Star Vocal Band (formerly the 17th Ave. All Stars) cover Journey and Stevie Wonder. Live Wire and Chapter Six represent the hot retro swing craze. It's a panoply of sound!

Songlist: Route 66, Away, Train, Style, Don't Stop Believin', Istanbul, Ramble On, Zoot Suit Riot, Have I Ever Told You, The Lord's Prayer, I Could Write A Book, I Wish, The Water Is Wide, Jump, Jive And Wail, A Salute to 20th Century Music, Pass Me Not, A Philoyles Thing

Various Artists : Harmony Sweepstakes 1999    onsale

This year's program was the most diverse and exciting yet. Filled with emerging groups, as well as Sweepstakes favorites such as Chicago Voice Exchange, the competition was intense indeed. Seven, from New York, garnered top honors, with their intricate and multi-textured voicings, heard to best advantage on "Bridge Over Troubled Water"; the group's arrangements are expanding the universe of sound. Taking second place were the Standards, five brothers whose onstage appeal and energy charmed everyone. Minimum Wage's outrageous humor, as exemplified by "The Last Cowboy Song," had the audience begging for mercy (or more?) Other musical highlights include the ringing tones of last year's champs, Metropolis (a barbershop quartet), the Euphorics, with "Message In A Bottle" and Pickup 6's medley of Beatles favorites.

Songlist: Bless This House, Underdog, Route 66, Sweet Georgia Brown, Baby I'm With You, Message In A Bottle, Ja'ackson, Lean On Me, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Mary, Don't You Weep, Patty Duke, Beatles Medley, Our Day Will Come, Bring Him Home, The Last Cowboy Song, I Sing Low, Hands To Heaven, I Believe

Vybration : Vybration : 1 CD

Vybration : Vybration    Out of Print

Southern California's hottest contemporary a cappella sextet, formed in 2001 to perform at Disney's California Adventure under the name "Groove 66," led by musical director and vocal arranger Deke Sharon. The band became the park's most popular atmosphere group, and performed every day at Disneyland for almost three years; now they exist primarily outside of Disney, making appearances on TV and radio, headlining on cruise ships, corporate events and the Orange County Performing Arts Center. We had the pleasure of watching and hearing Los Angeles-based Vybration's wonderful set at the Harmony Sweeps Finals, which won them 2nd place against a very strong field of Regional winners, and Best Original Arrangement for Sharon's arrangement of "Route 66." That finger-poppingly jazzy song is one of our favorites among the 12 songs here, other ones are the Eagles' "Fly Like an Eagle," a jazzy "Blue Skies," "Fly" medley, Michael Jackson's "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'," Otis Redding's Bay Area anthem segueing into the Doo-Wop hit, "Dock of the Boardwalk" the Mamas and the Papa's iconic hit "California Dreamin', Sly and the Family Stone's "Everyday People," and "Disco Medley." Vybration's stage act was completely fun-these three men and three women obviously love what they do, and it adds up to great entertainment!

Songlist: Fly Like An Eagle, Blue Skies, Fly, Lean On Me, Wanna Be Startin' Somethin', Route 66, Dock Of The Boardwalk, California Dreamin', Everyday People, Seasons Of Love, Disco Medley, America, The Beautiful

The artistic director, and the only man at TWCD rehearsals, is Dr. Tim Selig. Their principal accompanist and arranger is Anne Albritton, whose piano graces all the songs.
