Every Christmas Eve for decades, the world-renowned Choir of King's College Chapel, Cambridge has broadcast the Festival o Nine Lessons and Carols worldwide on BBC Radio (Carols from King's is also televised by the BBC every Christmas annually). It never fails to inspire and appeal by bringing together readings from the Christmas story with the singing of traditional carols in which all may join: classic Christmas arrangements for the choir and exciting newly-composed anthems that often become choral classics. A program of Christmas music by American composers, the Kansas City Chorale sings pieces from the late nineteenth century to the present. Composers include Ned Rorem, Norman Dello Joio and Charles Ives. This recording also contains several premier recordings, including "Nativitas" by Jean Belmont. This cycle of eight choral cameos depicts the ceremony of Christmas with texts from the fourth through seventeenth centuries. According to the composer, "The intent in "Nativitas" is to create a musical shape which conveys some of the anticipation, reverence, mysticism and celebration surrounding the Birth of Jesus Christ." This is a great alternative to traditional Christmas recordings.

Aurora is one of seven choral ensembles at Decorah, IA's Luther College, founded in 1981 and comprised of 100 first-year women, selected each fall by audition. Named Pike Kor from the mid-1980s until the spring of 2008 when the ensemble was renamed Aurora, latin for dawn. Aurora performs on and off-campus for worship services, participates in the annual Christmas at Luther concert, and presents a spring concert with The Norsemen. "Using Our Voices" is an 18-song collection, some are accompanied by piano, flute, and percussion. Luther College Nordic Choir : Unto Us A Child Is Born   

Singing is a very big part of the campus of Luther College by being alive with the sound of its seven choirs. Music is considered to be an integral part of the community of faith and learning at the College and ever since it's founding Christmas has always been a very special time of year. The Christmas concerts are legendary and in 2006 celebrated the 25th anniversary of the combined musical ensembles including the Nordic Choir, Cantorei, the Norsemen and the Symphony Orchestra.

Vox Musica : Christmas Colours   

Vox Musica is a 13-strong, women's choral ensemble from Sacramento, CA, directed by Daniel Paulsen, and "Christmas Colours" was recorded in Sacramento's St. Paul's Episcopal Church. We could tell we were hearing something very special here with the first of 12 Christmas tunes, John Tavener's difficult, soaring and often dissonant "A Nativity" and Cesar Carrillo's "Ave Maria," which the group handled beautifully and easily. A very sweet 17th Century German Carol, "Es Sungen Drei Engel," the lilting, joyous "Gaudete, a 16th Century Finnish Carol, Franz Biebl's lovely "Zundet An Das Licht," Tavener's "The Lord's Prayer," the 16th Century Irish melody "Love Came Down At Christmas," Nancy Telfer's 4-part "Missa Brevis" and "Silent Night," nicely arranged by Paulsen, completed the album. Many of these songs are new to us, and we were surprised and delighted to hear them. Listen to the echoing, soaring song of angels, "Love Came Down At Christmas," and you will see what we mean!
