The Mamas & The Papas' hymn to the West Coast state California Dreamin' was actually written in chilly New York City by John and Michelle Phillips before they even formed the band that made them famous. Simon & Garfunkel were New York through and through and Simon's jaunty song about the Queensboro Bridge - aka Feelin' Groovy - uses its local colloquial name. Skeeter Davis, born Mary Frances Penick, was the survivor of a car crash that killed her singing partner Betty Jack Davis. They had enjoyed some success as The Davis Sisters but The End Of The World was the biggest hit of Skeeter's subsequent solo career. In My Room saw The Beach Boys moving indoors from all that sun and sand and recording one of their most reflective and lovely songs. Meanwhile the British invasion was threatening the pop status quo in America and Can't Buy Me Love, from the film Hard Day's Night, gave The Beatles yet another number one in the US charts.

Fargo North Dakota is the center of the a cappella universe! Say what? Well it becomes so, at least momentarily, with each new Blenders release. This first release from 1992 introduced a young quartet of men who were bursting with creative energy, musical cleverness, and humor. Mostly we are treated to original work with just 4 covers for those who like to judge talent against the past. Totally Whipped was a great initial release and truly foreshadowed the career which is one of the dynamic successes of the a cappella world. Be prepared to boogie!

The male quintet The Dachays (pronounced Da-shays) have Doo-Wop roots going back to the 1960s. Their love of the music and of harmonizing together led them into the studio, and some very fine buttery-harmonied doo-wop was the result. Yes, it's four part harmony in the barbershop style, for certain, but their tastes are as sprawling as the great state they call home. Standards are the majority, with special kudos for a standout arrangement of "When I Fall In Love"; the luscious harmonic motion of the coda is pure honey. The Western Wind was formed in 1969 and two of the founders are still singing. Perhaps the longevity of the group is due to the fact that their repertoire includes everything except heavy metal. This particular album includes classic American love songs form 1920 to 1950. The works include songs by Rogers and Hart, George Gershwin, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, Brian Wilson and John Denver. Though mostly jazz, their classical training comes through on "My Funny Valentine," particularly. Two songs, "Oh, Lady Be Good" and "I Got Rhythm"were arranged by Dick Hyman who accompanies the group on piano. The cd notes include biographies of the composers and info about the music.
