This is an atypical recording for South Africas leading
a cappella group. Most of the songs are collaborations with other
musicians, and most are not a cappella. The Christian
spirituality theme that runs through most of the songs is not
altogether unusual, although in no previous Mambazo release has
there been such a concentration. Among the (accompanied)
highlights are "Knockin On Heavens Door," a
Bob Dylan tune with Dolly Parton singing lead, "People Get
Ready" with Phoebe Snow out front, and Lou Rawls backed up
by Mambazo on "Chain Gang." Theres also five a
cappella performances by Mambazo themselves of original tunes by
leader Joseph Shabalala. Definitely a change of pace!

Howd we overlook this one? In 1988, Paul Simon
co-produced this recording of South Africas most famous a
cappella group. Most of the 13 songs are in Swahili, written by
leader Joseph Shabalala, with the lyrics thankfully printed in
the liner notes along with a description the songs in English.
They vary in themes from spiritual "Lindelani (Get
Ready)," to the problems of apartheid described in
"Hamba Dompasi (No More Passbook)," to a tribute to
Paul Simon ("Amaphiko Okundiza [Wings To Fly]") which
mixes English lyrics with Swahili. The final song is perhaps the
most memorable: "Amazing Grace" performed with (and
arranged by) Paul Simon.

The title means "Let's Develop in Peace" and this is
a celebration of the new era in South Africa. Ladysmith's full
sound and interesting rhythms are here, along with a beautiful
message of hope and thanks to their many fans worldwide. A
wonderful recording.

Paul Simon was wise to feature this great group in his release
"Graceland." Their inimitable style as well as
beautiful voices help make Ladysmith one of the most popular
groups to come out of Africa. They have popularized the classic
call and response music called Mbube and made it as recognized
and popular as rock.

South Africa is free! This recording was the first released
after the end of apartheid. The joy permeates the music of the
country's most popular (a cappella) group, Ladysmith Black
Mambazo, led by Joseph Shabalala. If only the group were freed
from its U.S. label, which keeps us anglos ignorant of the
wonderful songs' meaning by refusing to print translations of the
Zulu lyrics of such wonderful songs as "Liph' Iqiniso" and "Isifikil' Inkululeko."

This South African group has a unique and beautiful style that
is well represented in this recording. Their use of traditional
songs gives us an insight into cultural South Africa during
