Vocal Jazz Groups DVDs

One of the great things about being able to take home a video recording is that the performers are immortalized in what may well be their heyday, performing material that they may not be doing anymore; it may even be a page of history of a group that's not performing together anymore. We at Primarily A Cappella carry documentaries, DVDs from award-winning, industry-leading groups and even feature films, so if you're a vocal jazz fan, go wild - this is where you can see shows & stories that most fans just dream of.

Their repertoire also includes Renaissance part-songs, 19th and 20th century compositions and arrangements of contemporary music. Their Director Phil Mattson has been nominated twice for Grammy Awards. These 12 songs, recorded live at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church in Mahtomedi, MN, feature Mattson-arranged winners like "Snow Covers the Valley," Bach's "Jesu, Meine Freude," Burt Bacharach's "Alfie," "Never Let Me Go," Johnny Mercer/Harold Arlen's classic "Blues in the Night" and Irving Berlin's "Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep." Ward Swingle's "Country Dances" and the Swingle-arranged "Satchmo," Duke Ellington's "Don't Mean A Thing if it Ain't Got That Swing," Anders Edenroth of the Real Group's "Friendship" and Bobby McFerrin's "Jubilee" are other favorites. Bob Flanigan, one of the founding members of the legendary Four Freshmen, is on the stage in Las Vegas for this live, 23 song performance of the new incarnation of the 4Fs, Brian, Curtis, Vince and Bob, before a very appreciative audience. Where Flanigan and his mates would perform with a single member on the guitar, and often perform and record with a jazz band (such as Stan Kenton's) or orchestra, the new 4Fs play their own instruments, guitar, trumpet, bass and drums. But their voices are what makes this dvd special. The original Four Freshmen (founded at Butler U. in 1948) had a marvelous, era-defining, tight-harmonied tenor sound that sold millions of records and influenced every vocal jazz group that followed--and these four men simply nail it. So don't be put off by the fact that they are posing, very confidently, on the cover of "Live" holding their instruments. Instead, sit back and enjoy the show's amazing vocal harmony and wonderful jazz selections! Some favorites are the standards "Day In, Day Out," "Invitation," "Young and Foolish," "If I Only Had A Brain," "Angel Eyes," "Something's Gotta Give," "If I Had You," "Blue World," "September Song," "After You've Gone" and "We'll Be Together Again." A top-drawer show, and a great new incarnation of one of our favorite groups!

"Easy Street" is a rare treat, an opportunity to see the Four Freshmen (Bob Flanigan, Ken Albers and the Barbour brothers, Don and Ross) in their prime, in a live (black and white) performance on the Ray Anthony show in 1956! Featured are 21 of the 4F's favorite pop hits: "Day By Day," "You're So Far Above Me," "Charmaine," "Got A Date With an Angel," The Day Isn't Long Enough," "How Do You Like Your Eggs in the Morning," "Someone Like You," "Graduation Day," "There'll Never Be Another You," the title tune, and our personal favorite, "It's a Blue World." The four play their own instruments, or act in little skits, singing "You Stepped Out of a Dream" to a librarian who tries to keep her composure, for instance. It's a corny 1956 variety show, the Four Freshmen are singing with their bright, fresh sound and ringing harmonies, and we've got a front-row seat!"

Good lovin (music video)

This performance was filmed for HBO live at the Aquarius Theatre in Hollywood in 1986, the year McFerrin won a Grammy - when he was at his first peak as a one man jazz band. It is absolutely marvelous to watch the energy and humor of this musical genius interact with an audience. On the CD you can hear "Thinkin' About Your Body" but you don't see the interlude where McFerrin suddenly starts improvising on someone's leather jacket. Watching him create "Bwee-Dop"using audience participation is very different from just hearing it (which is why it didn't make the CD), and there's no substitute for watching him egg on the crowd to do the hand signals in "Itsy Bitsy Spider," On "Fascinating Rhythm," his expressions are priceless as he emulates a 1940s jazz band. And his duet with/accompaniment to soprano saxaphonist Wayne Shorter is all the more astounding as you see the two of them lock eyes and minds. Of the 12 songs here, only four are on the CD. We highly recommend this DVD!

In the 1930s and 40s, what had been as a gospel and vaudeville vocal style was adopted to popular songs, and the rich tradition of four-part harmony reached its peak—and The Mills Brothers and the Delta Rhythm Boys were the premier groups that captured America's attention. "Sing Brother Sing" includes 18 rare, early appearances by these two supergroups, including the Ohio-born Mills Brothers' 1932 hit "St. Louis Blues," their 1943 hit "Paper Doll" which became one of the biggest hits of the decade, and their 1944 #1 hit "You Always Hurt The One You Love." The DRB's 1941 hits "Dry Bones" and "Take The A Train" are very fine. Other winners are "Jack You're Playing The Game," a small movie in itself, "Opus One," featuring the Mills Bros. with Nat King Cole," "Lazy River," "Till Then," "Caravan" (check out the early vocal percussion and vocal horns) and "Swing Brother"—but there's really not a weak cut. Besides enjoying the butter-smooth harmonies, it's fascinating to watch the dancing and acting in the little skits that illustrate the songs. What is clear throughout is the sheer vocal power and hip sophistication of these pioneer groups, whose musical stylings laid the groundwork for every Pop and Soul group to follow. These gems may be thought of as early MTV videos, documenting two groups that are a source for much of the great music that has touched our lives.
