Estelle Liebling

Beverly Sills and the Liebling Singers practice a song with Estelle Liebling at the piano. 1948

Estelle Liebling was born on April 21, 1880 was a vocal coach who taught singing using the three register method. She stressed the "unmusicalness" of the seventh octave, as well as the avoidance of the head register in men. One of Liebling's most famous pupils, Beverly Sills, was a coloratura soprano and was her lifelong associate and singing coach.

Estelle Liebling had been a pupil of Mathilde Marchesi and carried forth the Garcia tradition. Her influence reached very far; she was the teacher of the influential bel canto teacher of Memphis, Ethel Taylor Maxwell, whose extensive line of students include long time Metropolitan Opera bass, the late Richard Vernon, Todd Payne, baritone Louis Otey, and promising dramatic tenor Kendrick Jacocks among many others. Liebling was John Philip Sousa's most renowned vocal soloist; her extensive range and vocal agility delighted listeners during nearly 2,000 concerts. Liebling's book on singing: "The Estelle Liebling Vocal Course" remains a best seller.
