The 100 choristers that comprise the Vienna Boys Choir 4 touring choruses give around 300 concerts and performances around the world, to almost half a million people per year. The Vienna Boys' Choir is one of the oldest boys' choirs existing in the world. For over five hundred years they have been a symbol of Austria. A founding document of Maximilian I in 1498 called the first dozen boys to the imperial court as members of the newly formed court music band. Thus he showed his great interest in contemporary musical developments in Burgundy and the Netherlands. Since then the Vienna Boys' Choir has been a fixed attraction in Austrian musical life. A number of famous musicians have emerged from its ranks. Its first-class training has produced numerous highly qualified vocalists, violinists and pianists. Joseph Haydn, who actually belonged to the Cathedral Choir of St Stephan, sang together with the court choir boys in the chapel of the Hofburg |

This is a beautiful DVD of a concert in Vienna that was part of a series of events entitled 'Sacred Mozart' organized by the Wiener Mozartjahr 2006, where all of Mozart's works were performed in various city churches. The festive highlight was this concert, presented in St. Stephen's Cathedral on Jan. 27, 2006, the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth, when it was broadcast worldwide. St. Stephen's is where Mozart married Constanze Weber in 1782, where one of his sons was baptized, and where the blessing took place after his death. At the heart of this selection of sacred music is the majestic 'Missa in C Major K.317' of 1779, better known as the 'Coronation Mass.' The 'Church Sonata in C major, K.278,' 'Graduale Sancta Maria, mater Dei, K.273,' 'Ave verum corpus, K.618' and 'Litaniae Lauretanae, K.195' are some of our favorite pieces by the master composer performed here. The sweet voices of the Vienna Boys' Choir are the angels make this powerful sacred music soar up into the wonderful acoustics of St. Stephen's. This DVD places us in the audience of this very special and significant event and reminds us of Mozart's unique genius. |

This recording is a combination of two earlier releases: 'Domingo and the Vienna Boys Choir' and 'Hermann Prey and the Vienna Boys Choir,' now out of print. The variety of tenor and bass/ baritone voices, combined with the boys' voices is outstanding. All the singers are in top form and the songs are not all the usual trite fair, though there are some familiar titles. All in all, this is a wonderful Christmas experience and highly recommended. |
