Two of the world's greatest vocal groups, one traditional and one barbershop, together in a single collection, recorded live in 1986 (don't be concerned about the sound or vocal quality; it's super). Three of the songs, 'How Great Thou Art,' 'Love At Home' and 'Nearer My God To Thee,' feature both, and the remaining eleven tracks allow each ensemble to showcase their unique talents. As the Tabernacle Choir's director, Dr. Jerold Ottley, explains, the choir sings with 'an openness of resonance, and the Majority sings primarily with forward resonance. That is, they sound brighter.' Most of the songs are inspirational (and about half are organ accompanied), though 'Danny Boy,' 'Home On The Range,' 'Windows Of the World' and Barry Manilow's 'One Voice' round out the set. Both groups have a rich and full tone that is at the same time transparent and weightless; ensemble singing at its best! |

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir, accompanied by the huge Tabernacle organ, bring us some beautifully sung, authentic Civil War songs. We learned some of these songs in elementary school, and remember being touched by their poignancy, at the same time appalled to learn of the bloody slaughter. Soldiers on both sides marched off to songs like 'Tramp, Tramp, Tramp,' 'The Bonnie Blue Flag,' 'The Battle Hymn of the Republic,' 'Dixie' and 'When Johnny Comes Marching Home,' but it's the songs like 'He's Gone Away,' 'Tenting On The Old Camp Ground,' 'Aura Lee,' 'Lorena,' 'Kathleen Mavourneen,' 'Sweet Evelina,' 'Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child' and the sadly unincluded 'One Vacant Chair' that tell the real, heartbreaking story of the war. We're then cheered up, however, by 9 Stephen Foster 'pop' tunes, the joyous 'Ring De Banjo,' 'Oh! Susanna,' 'The Glendy Burk,' 'Beautiful Dreamer,' 'Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair,' 'Nellie Bly' and others. A powerful collection from the magnificent MTC. |

O Shepherds Say!' from France, Italy's 'Song of the Bagpipers,' Austria's 'As Lately We Watched,' and Denmark's 'See the Radiant Sky Above' are particularly wonderful. 24 inspiring, beautiful songs by one of the oldest, most well-known choirs in the world! |

'America's Choir' began their musical journey in 1847, singing hymns and sacred music, accompanied by the massive Tabernacle organ. These 360 singers, accompanied by an 110-strong orchestra, have in recent years, lent their magnificent sound to recordings of patriotic music, tunes from Broadway musicals and now a musical tribute to master cartoon and movie creator Walt Disney. These 10 songs, from 'When You Wish Upon a Star'/'Hi Diddle-Dee-Dee' medley and 'Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf' to 'Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah,' 'A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes' and 'Some Day My Prince Will Come,' are as beautifully arranged and sung as we have every heard them. Listen to 'Whistle While You Work'/Heigh Ho! Heigh Ho!' medley, and we are taken back to all the joy and amazement we felt when we first experienced 'Snow White,' Disney's first animated feature. 'Star' is a nostalgic, touching winner from beginning to end! |
