America's oldest collegiate men's chorus, the 60-strong Harvard Glee Club, under the storied direction of Jameson Marvin since 1978, celebrates its 150th Anniversary with a live concert. There are 17 cuts here, some of them piano accompanied. Three of them, 'I. The Shepherd of King Admetus,' II. The Voiceless' and III. 'Fata Morgana,' are from Dominick Argento's 'Apollo in Cambridge,' written especially for the Glee Club and premiered here. Other favorites are Michael Praetorius' 'Lo, how a rose e'er blooming,' a pair by Josquin des Prez, 'Kyrie' and 'Agnus Dei I, II, III;' conductor Marvin's 'Cantantes Licet,' Benjamin Britten's 'The Ballad of Little Musgrave and Lady Barnard,' Stephen Foster's 'Gentle Annie,' a very funny rendition of the American Folk song 'Sacramento,' the 18th century Welsh Folk song 'All through the night' and a piano-accompanied medley of traditional 'Harvard Football Songs.' This is a beautiful, spirited, joyous collection from one of America's great collegiate men's choruses, the Harvard Glee Club!

This is a live, 2-CD set, recorded at a Celebration of the Career of Dr. Jameson Marvin (Director of Choral Activities at Harvard from 1978 to 2010) from April 30, 2010; featuring the Harvard Glee Club, the Radcliffe Choral Society and Harvard-Radcliffe Collegium Musicum, all conducted by Dr. Marvin and Associate Conductor Kevin Leong. Disc 1 has 20 songs, some favorites are Palestrina's 'Sicut cervus,' Thomas Tomkins' 'When David Heard,' Schubert's 'Nachthelle-Opus 134,' Randall Thompson's 'Stopping by Woods,' Pablo Casals' 'Nigra sum,' Zoltan Kodaly's 'Esti dal,' Stravinsky's 4-part 'Podbliudniye,' the American Folk song 'He's Gone Away,' Conductor Marvin's 'Each Future Song,' Steven Sametz' 'Munus,' and Brahms' 'Wo ist ein so herrlich Volk.' Disc 2 features the World Premier of Robert Kyt's two-part 'Song of Awakening;' Part I is 'LamentÐO Lord Hear My Cry,' and Part II is 'PsalmÐThrough God Within.' Kyt's work was composed in honor of Dr. Marvin's retirement, and it is followed by remarks by Rev. Peter Gomes and Jack Megan. 'A Spring Farewell' is a rich, moving collection by three of America's best collegiate choruses, to honor their great Director, Conductor, teacher and friend as he steps down from his work of molding and making them what they are today!

The a cappella, all-male, 63-strong Notre Dame Glee Club brings us a collection of sacred songs ('Regina caeli,' 'L'ultime di de maggio,' 'Beautiful Savior,' 'Zwei Geistliche Chore, O. 115,' 'O sacrum convivium'), spirituals ('Swing Down Chariot,' 'I'm Building Me A Home,' 'Deep River'), and folk tunes ('She Moved Through the Fair,' 'Shenandoah,' 'Londonderry Air'). 23 well-chosen songs, sung with youthful energy, feeling and beautifully-blended harmonies. 'Under the Dome' is a sumptuous musical feast!

The 71-strong male voices of the NDGC presents this fine collection of Christmas musical landmarks in 'the hope of reawakening that mystery and wonder' of the Christmas seasons of their childhood. A noble purpose, and beautifully realized, from the opening cut, the lovely title song, and a marvelous 'Gloucestershire Wassail,' Steven Sametz' 'Noel,' and 'Lo How A Rose E'er Blooming to Handl's 'O Magnum Mysterium,' Monteverdi's 'Hodie Christus natus est,' a ringing 'Riu, riu, chiu' and 'Here We Come A Wassailing,' this is as rich, smooth, melodic and harmonious as any Christmas collection we've heard. We particularly enjoyed the spiritual 'Mary Had A Baby' and the joyous West Indian song 'De Mornin' Come.' One of the best of the year!

The 40-strong, all-male NDGC brings us a rich, varied collection of 26 songs, ranging from the expected Notre Dame fight songs ('Irish Backs'/'On Down the Line,' 'You Gotta Be A Football Hero'/Touchdown Star,' 'Notre Dame, We Hail Thee,' 'Notre Dame, Our Mother' and 'The Notre Dame Victory March'), Folk and Traditional tunes ('Vive l'amour,' 'What Shall We Do with the Drunken Sailor,' 'McNamara's Band'/Clancy Lowered the Boom'), 'Loch Lomond' and 'Danny Boy'), Show tunes {'Tonight,' 'Seventy-six Trombones') and spirituals ('The Water Is Wide,' 'Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,' 'Wade In the Water,' 'My Lord, What a Morning' and 'Ain'-A That Good News'). Nicely sung, spirited a cappella selections by one of the oldest and most beloved collegiate choruses.

The Notre Dame Glee Club is a music tradition that began at the University in 1915. Since 1993, Daniel Stowe has led the Glee Club in world-wide tours with great success. Today, Glee Club repertoire is not just football songs, sea shanties and the alma mater theme. In recent years, the choir has been trimmed in numbers to 55 select singers, and their repertoire now focuses upon a wider range of styles: from German art songs, American spirituals, Russian Orthodox, Baroque and Renaissance sacred music, to Barbershop harmony and folk music from nations of the world. The Glee Club's versatility is showcased in the wide variety of genres on this disc.. The musicianship of the Glee Club is all the more remarkable when considering that the Glee Club is a volunteer ensemble, operating independently from music degree programs. Recorded in spring 2007, in the finely-tuned acoustic of Leighton Concert Hall in the newly-finished DiBartolo Performing Arts Center on the campus of University of Notre Dame.

The Ohio State University Men's Glee Club was organized in 1875 and has created a long tradition of choral excellence. The 2006 incarnation of the group, conducted by Dr. Robert J. Ward, brings us a spirited collection of songs, mixing a cappella with accompanied material, as well as showing off the rich variety of their repertoire, from traditional tunes like 'Down By The Riverside,' 'She Moved Through the Fair,' the beautifully harmonic a cappella song 'Blow the Candles Out' and 'O Mistress Mine' to classical tunes like Franz Schubert's 'Widerspruch,' Richard Wagner's 'Begluckt darf nun dich,' Felix Mendelssohn's' Periti autem' and Z. Randall Stroope's 'Dies Irae;' to popular music like Billy Joel's lovely 'And so it goes,' Michael Martin's 'Send In the Clowns,' and of course songs of OSU: 'Carmen Ohio,' 'The Buckeye Battle Cry,' 'Campus Echoes' and 'Hang on Sloopy.' We also liked Sven-David Svenstrom's dramatic a cappella 'Kyrie' and John Rutter's 'Down By the Sally Gardens.' A fine collection from one of America's oldest and most respected Collegiate groups!

One of the oldest and most respected Collegiate men's choruses, the 2007 version of the Ohio State University Men's Glee Club presents a lovely and difficult collection of beautifully arranged harmonic gems, directed by Dr. Robert J. Ward. Many of these 17 songs are accompanied, but our favorites include the a cappella tunes, Stevan St. Mokranjac's 'Tebe poyem,' 'Take a Chance on Me,' Bruce Sled's surprising 'Jin-ga-lye-ah,'the a cappella 'Leave It!,' Healy Willan's exquisite 'Kyrie,' form 'Missa Brevis,' an a cappella rendition of Stevie Wonder's 'Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing,' Eric Lane Barnes' very funny, live a cappella 'Lambscapes,' and the still-loved a cappella chestnut, 'Wimoweh.' We also enjoyed the 'Songs of OSU medley, as will the many thousands of OSU alumni who will want to hear these spirited songs of Columbus. A pair by Franz Schubert, 'Der Gondelfahrer' and 'La Pastorella' and Robert Cundick's lovely 'The West Wind' round out our list of favorites. Good, entertaining Collegiate stuff from the Midwest!

Founded in 1903, the OSU Women's Glee Club is one of the oldest and most respected women's Collegiate groups in America. These 19 songs start off nicely with a pair of a cappella tunes, the lovely 'Alleluia' by William Boyce, and Jacques Arcadelt's joyous 'Sing On this Festive Day,' Bach's lightly accompanied 'Dominus Deus,' and three by Gwyneth Walker, 'Mornings Innocent,'' 'Love is a Rain of Diamonds' and 'I will be earth.' Thomas Morely's 'Fire, fire my heart' and a pair of spirituals by Michael Neaum, 'I got a robe' and 'Didn't it rain' are also on our list of favorites. The Glee Club has a pure, harmonic soprano sound that's easy on the ears, and every cut on 'Here's to Song' is a winner!

G. Wallace Woodworth (1902-1969) is renowned as a choral and orchestral conductor, organist and music educator. At Harvard he studied history and music from 1924-26, and accompanied the Harvard Glee Club. This collection of recordings from his tenure as conductor of the Harvard Glee Club (from 1933) is performed by the HGC with the Radcliffe Choral Society. Included here are 22 Classical works, mostly a cappella pieces performed by both groups, but a handful performed by the groups individually. Favorites are three songs by Claude Debussy, 'Dieu! Qu'il la Fait Bon Regarder,' 'Quant J'ai Ouy le Tabourin' and 'Yver, Vous N'estes qu'un Villian;' several tunes by Palestrina, 'Benedictus,' 'Confitemini Domini,' 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa,' 'Adoramus Te,' 'Sanctus and Osanna' and 'Benedictus and Osanna.' Jacob Regnart's 'Petite Nymfe Folatre,' Orlandus Lassus' 'Mon Coeur se Recommande a Vous' and 'Bonjour Mon Couer,' Mozart's 'Ave Verum Corpus' and Leo Preger's 'Four Motets' are also some of our favorites. This material is difficult, powerful and not something that your average college glee clubs would consider learning and adding to their repertoire. The oldest college chorus in America, the 60-voice, all-male Harvard Glee Club was essentially a social club on campus after its founding in 1858, performing college songs and glees to the accompaniment of banjos and mandolins. The spirituals in this collection have become mainstays in the body of American male chorus literature. Their arrangers, Marshall Bartholomew and Fenno Heath, were conductors of the Yale Glee Club, one of the groups that was central in creating and sustaining the tradition of collegiate male choir singing in America.

The 60-voice Harvard Glee Club, Harvard's internationally renowned men's chorus, is the oldest college chorus in America, founded by students in 1858 to sing college songs and glees.
