The origin of the word 'woodshedding' is vague, to say the least. But from what little we know of the beginnings of the barbershop style of singing, it is clear that amateur quartets worked out the songs they sang by ear - a sort of trial and error method that became known as woodshedding. There is little doubt that the same is true of our early Society quartets -- they 'woodshedded' the chords that supported the melody. Today, the written arrangement has almost replaced harmonizing by ear. While published arrangements offer more opportunities for more quartets to learn more music -- and at a faster pace -- it would be unfortunate if woodshedding were to diappear from the barbershop quartet scene entirely. So the purpose of this folio is to encourage men to participate in the woodshedding experience. |

One of the most famous Christmas songs of all time this barbershop arrangement will cheer your audiences and performers alike. A Holiday winner! Includes 4 copies of the sheet music and a learning CD which is recorded as a a 'part-predominant' recording. This is where one voice part (tenor, lead, baritone or bass) is featured louder (or predominantly) in one channel (either left or right), to make learning that part easier for the singer. There is also a regular 'reference' version of the song as well. Helpful for all quartet members who can rehearse separately from the others. (in the car..) |

The Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America (SPEBSQSA) brings us this sampler collection of great barbershop, recorded live at SPEBSQSA international conventions. 16 songs, from 'Bring Back Those Good Old Days/`I Want A Girl by Boston Common, 'Row, Row Row' by The Ritz and 'Irish Lullaby' by Acoustix to 'My Wild Irish Rose' by The Naturals, 'Lida Rose/Will I Ever Tell You' by Rural Route 4 and 'California Here I Come' by Dealer's Choice. Mostly quartets, but there are a couple of very nice tunes by choruses, 'Swanee' by the Louisville Thoroughbreds and 'Alice Blue Gown' by The West Towns Chorus. It's all good, but the question remainsĐwith all that great harmony, how did they pick 16 Favorites? Our favorite: 'Lida Rose/Will I Ever Tell You,' by Rural Route 4. |

SPEBSQSA's huge convention in Kansas City, entitled Music Man 2000, has come and gone, leaving us with two very sweet-sounding souvenirs: this CD, Top Twenty Quartets, and Top Twenty-Three Choruses. To give you an idea of the quality of the competition, one of our favorite groups, Metropolis, 1998 Harmony Sweeps winners, placed 10th! This CD is jam-packed with the best barbershop in the world, with two selections each from International Champions Platinum and Silver Medalist Michigan Jake, followed by songs from BSQ, Uptown Sound and Power Play, 3rd, 4th, and 5th place winners, all pictured in the liner notes with medals and trophies gleaming. There are 22 great cuts in all, and we have to say that SPEBSQSA, whose purpose is the 'Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing,' is preserving and encouraging its butt off. Long live Barbershop! |

To our expectations that the sun will rise, the flowers grow and taxes will be due, we can add the Vocal Majority being named SPEBSQSA's International Chorus Champions again! And it's easy to see why, from their wonderful 'Sweetheart of Sigma Chi' and 'Mardi Gras/Parade' medley on this cd from the huge 2000 Kansas City convention. But they only need glance over their collective shoulders to see 22 other great groups, and why competition is as good for choruses as it is for phone service. From Silver Medalist New Tradition to the Big Chicken Chorus (6th place), the Senate-Aires (14th), and Men of A-Chord (ouch, 20th), to Whale City Sound (23nd), they all sing their lungs out. So whether or not the Majority is hearing footsteps, we're hearing, once again, great choral music! |

The giant SPEBSQSA convention in Louisville, KY once again attracted the best barbershop groups in the world, with gold medals on their minds. There were only four of those medals, though, and they ended up around the necks of Gotcha!, who wowed all of us in the audience at the 2004 A Cappella Summit. They have two great cuts on 'Top Twenty,' the ringing 'If I Had My Way' and 'Play That Barbershop Chord,' while all the other groups get a single cut. Silver was won by Max Q, who sing 'When My Sugar Walks Down the Street,' 3rd Place by Riptide's 'From the First Hello To the Last Goodbye,' 4th place by former Harmony Sweeps Winner Metropolis, who give us 'Medley: I'm In Love Again/Them There Eyes,' and 5th for Saturday Evening Post' who sing 'Blues In The Night.' There are actually 21 Top Quartets here, and there's not a weak cut on the entire CD! |

This year's SPEBSQSA Convention in July in Louisville, KY, was bigger and better than ever, and you know the drill on these live recordings from the competitionĐone song each from the top 19 quartets, notably 'I'm In Love Again/Them There Eyes' medley by our Sweeps-winning friends, Metropolis, who placed fourth, 'From the First Hello to the Last Goodbye' by Riptide, #3, 'When My Sugar Walks Down the Street' by MaxQ, #2 and two from the champs, 'If I Had My Way' and 'Play That Barbershop Chord' by Gold medal winners Gotcha!, who wowed all of us in the audience at the A Cappella Summit in San Rafael, CA. Lots of tough competition in the Barbershop Quartet world sure leads to some sweet, powerful harmonies! |

Louisville KY also, of course, hosted the 2004 SPEBSQSA International Chorus Competition, which in terms of shear vocal power, is unmatched on this planet! The Gold went to St. Charles, Missouri's dynamic Ambassadors of Harmony, who sing Rogers and Hammerstein's 'I Have Dreamed' and Frank Loesser's 'New Ashmolean Marching Society and Student's Conservatory Band,' which must be heard to be believed. 2nd Place went to The Northern Lights, with 'Make Them Hear You,' 3rd to New Tradition Chorus, who recall the minstrel shows with Stephen Foster's 'Medley: Camptown Races/Ring Ring de Banjo/Buffalo Gals,' 4th to Alexandria Harmonizers' with Gershwin's bluesy 'Summertime,' and 5th to The Alliance, who give us 'The Sunshine of Your Smile.' A powerful, amazing collection! |

There was plenty of great harmony singing in Indianapolis this year and as usual the competition was tough. Winning the gold medals this time was St. Louis-based Vocal Spectrum featuring Timothy Waurick, Eric Dalbey, Jonny Moroni and Chris Hallam. In 2nd place was barbershop 'supergroup' Max Q, OC Times were 3rd, Metropolis 4th and Flipside finished 5th. With many, many hundreds of quartets competing every year to finish in the top 20 is a real accomplishment and these quarts clearly demonstrate why barbershop singing remains vibrant to this day. The 80,000 men and women barbershoppers around the world are the largest consumers and generators of new a cappella arrangements today. To help train arrangers to meet these enormous needs, SPEBSQSA amassed this humongous manual, which likely contains everything you'll need to arrange in the barbershop style. For those interested in other styles, this manual includes many fundamentals and techniques that are critical, like ballet is to a dancer. There's all the basics on harmony theory and many examples of chord progressions and voice leading. The manual details the definition and evolution of the barbershop style, which is elaborated on in sections covering embellishments, tags, swipes and much more. |
