Westminster Chorus

Westminster Chorus

.

Under the direction of Justin Miller, The Westminster Chorus is the 2009 'Choir of the World' Pavarotti Trophy winner and the International Chorus Gold Medalist of the Barbershop Harmony Society for 2010 & 2007. Uniquely composed of young and committed singers, the chorus in its current formation has been in existence for seven years. Motivated by the joy of joining with other young brothers in harmonious song, the chorus is truly grateful for the recent recognition it has earned and thrilled for the new performances and competitions to soon come.

In March, 2002 a group of five young barbershoppers met to discuss forming a new chorus, a chorus composed of other young singers, as a means of involving more of their peers in singing barbershop harmony. New director Terry Ghiselli approached the old Westminster chapter with an idea. Since the Westminster chapter's membership had dwindled to eight active members and they had not competed in almost 10 years, how would they feel about letting a group of young guys create their own chorus under the chapter's charter? The leadership and current members could not have been happier and offered their support in any way possible. A new experiment was begun - with guidance from elders and yet totally fueled by the youth the seeds for a new era of Barbershop Harmony were planted.

Westminster Chorus : It Only Takes a Moment

Review: The 57-strong, all-male Los Angeles-based Westminster Chorus is a Barbershop Harmony Society Legend! First formed in the Spring of 2002 of 15 members whose average age was 20, the chorus grew to over 50 members, captured the Far Western District Chorus Championship in 2003 and 2005, then placed an incredible 2nd to The Vocal Majority in 2006. This relatively unknown group, the youngest chorus ever to grace the International stage, went on to win International Gold in 2007 and 2010! "It Only Takes a Moment" is a well-chosen "Best Of" selection of 16 varied songs, from traditional tunes like "Sloop John B," "Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel," "Shenandoah" and "Goodbye Dixie, Goodbye;" Swing music like, a wonderful "Nat King Cole Medley," Gershwin's "Let's Burn Up the Town" and "Hit That Jive Jack;" Classical songs like Rachmaninov's "Bogroditse Devo" and Esch and Whitacre's "Lux Aurumque;" heartstring-tuggers like the title tune, "Their Hearts Were Full of Spring," "Still Fighting It" and "O Love That Will Not Let Me Go" and foot-tappers like "Early American Uptempo Medley." Westminster's sound is powerful yet subtle, equally adept at inspiring us with a soaring crescendo and breaking our hearts with a romantic tune about love. This is a marvelously entertaining, beautifully arranged collection from the talented young guns of the Barbershop Harmony Society!

Songlist: Sloop John B, Have A Little Talk With Myself, Early American Uptempo Medley, It Only Takes A Moment, Goodbye Dixie Goodbye, Let's Burn Up the Town, Their Hearts Were Full of Spring, Bogoroditse Devo, Make Our Garden Grow, Lux Aurumque, Nat King Cole Medley, Hit That Jive Jack, Still Fighting It, Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel?, O Love That Will Not Let Me Go

Westminster Chorus : Westminster Chorus

Review: Formed in the Spring of 2002, all-male Westminster began with 15 members, whose average age was 20. Since then the ensemble has grown to over 50 members and gone on to capture the SPEBSQSA Far Western District Chorus Championship in 2003 and 2005, as well as placing 2nd in the 2006 International Chorus Contest. With an average age in the mid-20s, Westminster is the youngest chorus ever to grace the International Stage. This album is a "best-of" grouping of the group's "Collected Works," including two live cuts from the 2004 Internationals, "Shine" and "So Long Mother;" and "The Way You Look Tonight" and "South Rampart Street Parade" from the 2005 FWD Contest. Also included is a pair of live cuts from the quartet OC Times--"Come Fly with Me" and "Good Luck Charm." Other winners are "Great Day," "My Old Kentucky Home," "Bright Was the Night" and bonus track "Ave Maria." Westminster has a powerful sound, smooth and richly harmonic, and we can tell from this recording and the liner notes photos that they put on a dynamic, fun show. Treat yourself to some great entertainment from these rising SPEBSQSA stars!
