The Choral Project

Celebrating 15 years of musical excellence, The Choral Project has been hailed by the San Jose Mercury News as "a Bay Area jewel" and extolled by the Bay Area Reporter as "pure balm for the ears."

Founded in 1996 by Artistic Director Daniel Hughes, The Choral Project has developed an outstanding reputation for performing high-level choral literature and bridging the gap between text and music, singer and spectator. The 42-voice ensemble has performed throughout the world to rave reviews and standing ovations, including performances for the American Choral Directors Association, the California Music Educators Association, the National Association of Composers of the USA, a performance by invitation to represent California at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., as part of the California State Day Celebration, as well as sold-out concerts in Mexico, Costa Rica and the United Kingdom. In July 2007, The Choral Project placed in all three categories at the California International Choral Festival & Competition in San Luis Obispo, CA, taking home 1st place in the Choir's Choice category, 2nd place in the Required Pieces category, and 3rd in the Folk Music category. In 2004, The Choral Project took 2nd place in the Mixed Choir competition at the 58th annual International Eisteddfod in Llangollen, Wales. This was a significant achievement for the Choral Project, as over 650 choirs from around the world auditioned and only nine were chosen to compete. The Choral Project received the highest individual score of any performing group (95 out of 100) for its performance of Juris Karlsons's "Neslegtais Gredzens," where an international panel of judges glowingly described the performance as a "tour de force."

The Choral Project has released seven albums: The Cycle of Life, Of Christmastide, Americana, Water & Light (the group's #1 best seller on the Clarion label), Winter, One is the All, and most recently Tell the World, a collection of African-American spirituals and contemporary gospel music, featuring Bay Area soloists Michelle Jordan and Juanita Harris. All these recordings can be found on our website, iTunes and CDBaby.com./

The Choral Project has performed world premieres of compositions by numerous composers including Brent Heisinger, Brian Holmes, Theodore Lucas, and most recently, Stephen Schwartz.

The Choral Project : Of Christmastide

Review: Though founded only in 1996 by Artistic Director Daniel Hughes, this ensemble of thirty voices has already begun to distinguish itself with an eclectic program. As part of their mission, the group seeks to unify diverse peoples, and the track list for 'Of Christmastide' reflects this concern. Weighted somewhat towards the 20th century, with Williams, Tavener, Rutter, Holst and Lauridsen amongst the composers represented, the balance includes two Latvian carols, James McKelvey's arrangement of 'Deck The Hall in 7/8' and the Nigerian 'Betelehemu.' Their sonority is broad and expansive, with an airy and open delivery. Some percussion and woodwinds on a few tracks.

Songlist: Hodie Christus natus est, Terly Terlow, Personent Hodie, Sweet Was the Song, Two Latvian Carols, THe Boar's Head Carol, Eso rigor e repente, Three Kings of Orient, Salvation Is Created, Carol From an Irish Cabin, A La Nanita Nana, Deck the Hall (in 7/8), O Magnum Mysterium, Wassil Song, Lo, How a Rose e're Blooming, Betelehemu, Silent Night

The Choral Project : One is the All

Review: Founded by Daniel Hughes in 1996, the 46-strong, mixed-voice Choral Project has gained an excellent reputation for performing high-level choral literature in concerts, interfaith services and choral festivals and invitationals in Northern California and across the country. This is the San Jose, CA-based ensemble's 5th CD, including the critically acclaimed 'Water and Light,' featuring the music of Eric Whitacre. 17 songs, beginning with Stephen Swartz' soaring 'Keramos' and the Ward Swingle-arranged 'De Puta y Taco,' 'One is the All' impressively progresses through a varied and eclectic songlist. Roberto Valera's joyous 'Quisiera,' the brooding, dissonant 'War Song,' the lovely 'So we'll go no more a roving,' Charles Stanford's soaring 'The Bluebird,' Harry Belafonte's dynamic 'Turn the World Around,' Joan Szymcko's 'It Takes A Village,' Jaako Mantyjarvi's spirited 'El Hambo,' and Joshua Shank's dramatic 'Musica animam tangens' are favorites. The poise and vocal maturity of the ensemble, a beautifully arranged and selected songlist and strong direction by Hughes add up to another very special CD from the Choral Project!

Songlist: Keramos , De Punta y Taco , Dieu! Qu'il La Fait Bon Regarder! , Quisiera , War Song , So We'll Go No More A-roving , Come To Me My Love, The Bluebird , Fair & True , Turn The World Around, It Takes A Village , The Garten Mother's Lullaby , El Hambo , Famine Song , Let Evening Come , Musica Animam Tangens , Ubi Caritas

The recording includes the first commercial release of Eric Whitacre's composition 'Winter' which makes for fascinating listen along with works by Avro Part, Jester Hairston and David Maddux.
