New Tradition Quartet

.

The New Tradition (TNT) was formed in December of 1983. The quartet is comprised of John Sherburn (tenor) formerly of the Crown City Good Time Music Company, Dan Jordan (lead) formerly of the Grand Tradition, 3-time international medalists), Bob Gray Jr (baritone) formerly of the Grand Tradition, and John Miller (bass) formerly of the 1979 International Champion quartet, Grandma's Boys. The quartet placed 7th in their first trip to the international stage in 1984, won the Far Western District Championship in the fall of 1984, captured the FWD International Prelims Champion title in March of 1985 and went on to win the coveted Gold Medal in July of 1985...19 months after forming.

TNT sang on over 35 shows a year until 1989, when demanding work loads and families made it necessary step back and reduce their shows to one or two a year. They have successfully sung at least once a year since 1989, having just celebrated their 25th Anniversary in Philadelphia in July of 2010.

John Sherburn went on to sing lead with The 139th Street Quartet from 1989-1991, winning three medals with them in international competition and recording one album with them.

Dan Jordan went on to sing with The Dapper Dans of Disneyland from 1989-1995, formed The Perfect Gentlemen in the fall of 1998, they won the Harmony Sweepstakes Competition in 2002, have made three CDs and one DVD, have been singing together for 12 years now, touring the world. Dan also sang with Nightlife from 1988-1990, joined The 139th Street Quartet in 1991 and toured to Russia, Germany and England, made two platinum winning Christmas CDs with Neil Diamond, television appearances, and still sings with 139 to this day, as they make one or two appearances each year since 1996. Dan joined Hi-Fidelity in 2008. They are the 2005 Harmony Sweepstakes Champions and the 2008 Pan Pacific Champions.

Bob Gray Jr. went on to sing with Saturday Evening Post, International medalists. Recorded 3 CDs and toured around the globe with this quartet until their recent retirement. John Miller went on to sing with two of his four sons in the Masters of Harmony chorus and has captured three gold medals in international competition with the MOH. John has recently been appointed to the International Executive board of the Barbershop Harmony Society.

New Tradition Quartet : Masterworks Series

Review: Masterworks Series Association of International Champions brings us one of their popular, generous, "best-of" compilations of the work of a Barbershop Harmony Society Gold Medal winner, in this case, 29 songs by 1985 champs The New Tradition. They won the Gold in Marx Brothers costumes, and begin this collection with "Marx Brothers Opener" and "Lydia, the Tattooed Lady," continuing with favorites "Tuxedo Junction," "I Used To Call Her Baby," "Air Medley," "Anti-Marriage Medley," "World War I Medley," "Showbiz Medley," "That Charlie Chaplin Walk," "Star Trek Opener," "Enterprise Medley" and "Barbershoppers Parody." This is all very funny stuff, sung with the ringing harmonies and soaring leads we would expect from Barbershop Harmony Society champions. In short, this album is great entertainment from the first cut to the last, from The New Tradition, one of the most innovative and funniest Barbershop International Champions!

New Tradition Quartet : Sgt. Pepler's Homely Tarts Pub Band

Review: If you're not comfortable laughing out loud, maybe you should pass this one by. I guess you could always shut your ears during the gags and just listen to these 1985 International Champions sing. You see, they're entertainers. The award winning singing is the basis of the act but the goal of these four is to bring joy and laughter into the world. Along the way to this goal they become the Marx Brothers and their gags are just as goofy as the originals. Spoofing the members of Star Trek will bring delight to Trekkies and Anti-Trakkies alike. It is a double CD release. The first disc is a reissue of their two albums. The second is a series of surprises from live performances. Though it sounds as though it was recorded from the audience, a piece simply called "Trombones" features all the members on vocal trombone and is wonderful in spite of the fidelity. As we love both laughter and song, this gets our enthusiastic recomendation!
