Voice Male

Put a lawyer, an accountant, a graphic designer, a marketer, a commercial real estate agent, and a computer specialist together and what do you get... Voice Male, a six-man contemporary a cappella group that has been delighting audiences across the Mountain West since 1994 with shows that can only be described as pure, spontaneous fun!

In 1994, the members of Voice Male got together at Utah State University where they were all members of the New Horizons Choir. In the beginning, they were a nine-man group just looking to have some fun, but their energetic live shows ended up taking USU by storm. After a couple of years, three group members moved on leaving the six guys who make up Voice Male today. They sing a wide variety of covers and originals and have performed hundreds of times at all kinds of events for a combined audience of over a hundred thousand. In the process, they've developed a blend that lifts young and old alike.

Voice Male has released five albums to date, including the self-produced "Jingles", which won the 1999 CARA award for Best Holiday Album. Adding to their maturity, much of the writing and arranging these days is done by tenor, Mike Bearden. Most notably Mike wrote "Give Them a Vision", a song off their latest album titled "Hooked". He wrote it for the Wal-Mart Corporation's Project Insight, a program that donates eye glasses to underprivileged children across the nation. In addition, John Luthy, known for his crisp vocal percussion, has developed a style which is all his own.

Utah-based six-man Voice Male has released seven CDs to date, including the self-produced "Jingles", which won the 1999 CARA for Best Holiday Album. Luckily, this encouraged the guys to do a sequel! Much of the arranging on these 15 songs is by group member Mike Beardon, who has a mischievious streak and a refreshing irreverence - cue the Doo-Woppy “White Christmas,” sassy, silly “Baby It’s Cold Outside,” a live (with Mike’s daughter Casie) “Rudolph,” a very strange “Tractin’ in a Winter Wonderland,” and “The Chipmunk Song.” They can play it straight too–note the faux trumpets on “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” the King’s Singers’ arrangement of “Jingle Bells,” sweet “Away in a Manger” and more. Will CARAs fit in 6 stockings?

How Firm A Foundation
Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus
There Is A Green Hill Far Away
Come, O Thou King of Kings

Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee
Lord, I Would Follow Thee

The Utah-based, all-male contemporary sextet Voice Male has displayed their versatility in releasing 6 excellent CDs in their first six years together, and tours of the US and Europe have invited comparisons with groups like Rockapella and the House Jacks. "Hymns II" shows us another side of Voice Male, their deeply-felt spirituality. 12 simple, powerful hymns are here, shining in the pure, clean harmonies of these six men. "The Spirit of God," "Lead, Kindly Light," "Our Savior's Love," "How Firm A Foundation," "Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus," "There Is A Green Hill Far Away," "Be Still My Soul," "Jesus, The Very Thought Of Thee"‹these are hymns simple and pure, not arranged to death, and with no vocal percussion. Just VM's trademark perfectly blended harmonies, and the deep faith of the words and music - and it's one of the most inspirational Gospel CDs we've heard!

The crisp sounding harmonies and flowing melodies of each song showcase the talent and dynamic range of each singer and the group as a whole. "The Prayer of the Children," is a warm and powerful display of spiritually uplifting music. The harmonies of "The Lord's Prayer" are intricate and tranquil. An additional treat is Kirby Shawís arrangement of "The Star Spangled Banner," as they present their patriotism through their vibrant sound. An even bigger surprise is the added beautiful voice of a female vocalist, Jill Bearden, in "A Child's Prayer."

The contemporary group Voice Male is Richard McAllister, tenor, Mike Bearden, tenor, John Huff, Baritone, Phil Kesler, baritone, Mike Willson, bass and John Luthy, vocal percussion and bass. "6" refers to the fact that this is their 6th CD, and probably also to the 6 years that these very talented men have been singing and performing together. We think this will be a breakthrough CD for them, for "6" is a joy from start to finish! Comparisons with Rockapella, the House Jacks and the Beach Boys come to mind as VM hands us one powerful cover after another, held together by John's rock-solid vocal percussion. Much of the excellent arranging is by group members, and the guys take turns singing lead, showing off their vocal talents. 14 well-chosen songs here: a fun "Brown Eyed Girl," "A Million Ways," U2's "Pride" (In the Name of Love), "It's so Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday," "My Maria," "The Shadow of Your Smile," great vocal "horns" on "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," "Sam, You Made the Pants Too Long," James Taylor's "That Lonesome Road" and "Sun on the Moon," "In The Still of the Night," "Loch Lomond," "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and "Celebration." Fun stuffÐhighly recommended!

Six guys from West of the Rockies are keeping the Voice Male tradition alive and they are doing it incredibly well. In harmony, they take you to the movies to find the "Rainbow Connection", you find yourself floating in the Acapulco bay with a humorous rendition of the "Love Boat Theme", and youčll be "Walking on Sunshine". They pay tribute to tradition with a beautifully arranged "Danny Boy" and knock around a bit with James Taylorčs "Only You". Youčre funny bone will tickle with "Farmer Tan" and "Send Me to Glory In A Glad Bag", and your desires inspired with "Give Them A Vision". Extra special mention goes to "You Lift Me Up", a Voice Male original. Appropriately titled "Hooked" because we believe you will be!

A sextet from Utah, Voice Male performs all of the Christmas standards with aplomb, and as well as several idiosyncratic tracks that reveal a mischievious side to their natures. Two poems, one of which, "The Christmas Tree Was Green And Bright," mentions the Swedish bikini team and dismisses any notion of predicatability coming from this group, gives way to a stellar "Angels We Have Heard On High"; "Homeless" comforts us with the true meaning of Christmas. The unexpected countermelodies of "O Holy Night" and "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" are just two examples of the creative flourishes that ornament these familiar carols, elevating them from the ordinary to the distinctive.
