This a cappella singing group is comprised of 10 young men from
around the country who convene each summer on Cape Cod. They constantly push
to expand the diversity and complexity of their music and bring to their audience
an exciting live show that is unique and one-of-a-kind, not only from summer
to summer, but from one night to the next. Every summer, the 10 members of Hyannis
Sound embark on an ambitious performance schedule to entertain the daylights
out of Cape Cod. In the course of 90 days, they will perform at countless Weekly
Shows, Parties, Restaurants, Backyard Gatherings, Cobblestone Streets, and Stadiums.
The Sound's extensive repertoire of tunes spans over the past century of popular
music (everything from R&B to Traditional to Rock) and is sure to please all
ages and tastes.
The Hyannis Sound was founded in 1994 by Townsend Belisle. Encouraged
by the success of the Vineyard Sound, which he founded and managed, Townsend
decided to put together a similar group on Cape Cod. Starting small, the group
made a name for itself by singing everywhere possible, for all who wanted to
listen. After years of hard work and sturdy commitment, the group began to establish
itself as one of the finest entertainment groups on the Cape, and has grown
into what it is now. Since its inception, the group has enjoyed more and more
public notice, and now holds four weekly concerts extending from Falmouth to
Chatham. Thanks to members who founded and nurtured the group, newer members
have enjoyed great Cape recognition, as well inherited dozens of friends and
families who are near and dear to us.
The Hyannis Sound has performed the National Anthem at Fenway Park as well as various Cape Cod League games, and have been featured in publications including The Boston Globe and Martha Stewart Weddings. The 2004 line-up, including 5 new guys chosen from a national pool of nearly 100 candidates, finds themselves with a robust local and national following and a jam-packed summer schedule. How It Goes Though a lot has changed since the early days, much has remained the same. The Hyannis Sound maintains a "tenured" membership policy. Once a person is taken into the group, he is free to stay for as many summers as he likes, or until the burdens of "real life" are too heavy to ignore any longer (most guys log 2-3 summers in the Sound).

In May of 1994 ten young collegiate men, who had been chosen by founder Townsend Belisle, arrived in Cape Cod, Massachusetts with the noble intention of singing together for a living. Creating jobs for themselves by singing on the street, in parks, on beaches and had regular gigs in places like Thompson's Clam Bar and Richard's Galleries. By late summer they had put together a crowd of regulars, an opening act for the Mamas and the Papas, and a sold-out show in Hyannis, which is captured in this live recording. 21 songs, particularly wonderful are: "Good Ol' A Cappella," "Summertime," the Fairfield Four's arrangement of "Roll, Jordan Roll," "Crazy," "House of Blue Lights," "Wonderful World," the traditional "Drunken Sailor," Manhattan Transfer's arrangement of "How High The Moon," Richard Greene's "Share A Load," "Freeze Frame," a lovely "Shenandoah" and "Everything She Wants." It's very clear from the audience response how much fun these guys are having on stage, reveling in the vocal group they have created in such a short time. An inspiring story, a lively live show with an enthusiastic audience, a repertoire well-chosen and arranged. The Sound Is Coming!

"Annual Bootleg Volume 1" is of course a live CD in a simple cardboard sleeve that has a songlist printed on it and very little else. It assumes we know that THS is a Cape Cod-based a cappella vocal group of between 10 and 14 young men, and luckily, we do. 16 songs, some favorites are the Beatles' "Drive My Car, "Bring It To Me," "Remedy," "Just My Imagination," "Signed Sealed Delivered," Huey Lewis & the News' "If This Is It," Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi," "Love Train" and closing with their trademark "Irish Parting Blessing." Recorded at First Baptist Church, Hyannis in August of 2003 before an enthusiastic audience. Good stuff!
