Beat'achon

BEAT'ACHON is a premier Jewish A Cappella singing group, bringing a fresh and exciting new sound to the Jewish music scene. Beat'achon's unique blend is part "doo-wop" part pop and rhythm & blues, celebrating traditional Jewish lyrics with a vibrant contemporary musical style. The six-man ensemble combines rich vocal harmonies and catchy rhythms in its repertoire of original compositions and arrangements, ranging from spirited upbeat tunes to soulful ballads. The name Beat'achon is a transliteration of the Hebrew word for faith. An unusual English spelling was chosen to include the musical term "beat" within the larger word, not entirely unlike the name of that British rock-and-roll group that was so popular a few decades back. the rest is history.

Beat'achon was formed in 1991 by six boyhood friends who grew up singing and harmonizing together at the Shabbat table. The six midwesterners, transplanted to Manhattan's Upper West Side, decided to prepare a few songs for a neighborhood talent show. They were a hit! The enthusiastic response convinced them there was an audience for their music. Many concert opportunities followed, for which they continued to write and arrange new songs, and in 1993 the group recorded its first album, Beat'achon: Jewish A Cappella. To date Beat'achon has performed extensively in North America in such cities as New York, Chicago, Boston, Miami and Dallas and even as far away as Hong Kong, China, with more cities and countries to come.

Beat'achon concerts have been described as "lively," "energetic," "uplifting," and "lots of fun," and have delighted audiences of all ages, across the religious spectrum. The group's live shows are filled with choreography, humor, a contagious enthusiasm and, of course, Beat'achon's trademark six-part harmony. The audience is encouraged to participate in singing a cappella during the audience participation segment of the show; many audience members don't wait to be asked, however, joining in and clapping along to their favorite tunes. In addition to concerts, Beat'achon performs at community events, institutional dinners and functions, school programs, and other such occasions.

BeatıAchon is Chaim Birman, Jordan B. Gorfinkel, Elie Landau, Dave Matkowsky, David Max and Avy Schreiber, and "West Side ZıMirot" (which we assume translates to something like "story"), is their third CD. There are 12 "Shabbat" songs here, Jewish traditional music beautifully and harmoniously sung in 6-part harmony. The booklet included has an explanation of each song in English, then the words in both Yiddish and in the centuries-old calligraphic Yiddish. The CD makes you feel as if you are sitting back in a synagogue, just allowing the ancient spirituality in the words and the sweet soulful harmonies of these talented men wash over you!

Never forget that Hebrew cantillation was the root of Christian chant later codified by Gregory. In short it is the most ancient a cappella to which we have access. It is not surprising that New York City, with strong orthodox communities in the midst of the neighborhoods which are the doo-wop centers of the world, would have a new emerging Jewish synthesis. Beat'achon combines traditional chant with doo wop elements and harmonies to update an ancient tradition. It is a fascinating historical development.

Beat'achon has grown tremendously in this second album. The voices have matured as well as the combination of Jewish chant and traditional tunes with modern doo-wop and contemporary styles. "Adon Olam," sung to the tune of "Under the Boardwalk," with its complexity of mouth pops and asperative percussive elements (then they throw in the horn lick just in case the mix isn't rich enough) is to die for, so to speak. With sophisticated recording, engineering, and producing assistance Beat'achon has come a long way along the path toward groyskayt!
