Jay Althouse: Christmas Spirituals for Men's Voices

Good News!
Whisper! Whisper!
Have You Heard?
Who's That Baby?

TTBB

A selection of superb well-crafted orginal a cappella Christmas sprituals. "Good News" opens with an energetic melody sung by the low voice with the upper three voices singing in counterpoint above. Rhythmic energy develops the piece and it ends with an electrifyimg eight measure coda that's the pinnacle of excitement. No solos, no tempo changes make for quick learning. In the classic spiritual tradition, yet fresh and contemporary." Whisper! Whisper!" has strong dynamic contrasts (from "Whisper, whisper, tiny baby in a manger lay" to "Shout it out from the hills and valleys; baby born today") make this a winner for your ensemble. A lush middle section contrasts with the rhythmic excitement of the opening theme. "Who's That Baby?" opens with the basses asking, in a hushed, rhythmic melody, "Who's that baby in a manger bed?" The text is classic spiritual style, but the music is anything but... it's fresh, new, and alive! "Have You Heard?" features contrasting dynamics (excellent for teaching phrasing), male solos, and a tender middle section which contrasts with the hushed excitement of the opening and closing melody. Includes a descant on the final chorus.

"All On A Christmas Morning" is one of the least performed but most hauntingly beautiful of the Alfred Burt Christmas carols, this male chorus version features tight four-and five-part voicings and jazz reharmonizations throughout, a rare step-out solo for the second bass, followed by another step-out solo for the first tenor. Rangy, but worthy addition to any Christmas program. This arrangement of "Away In Amanger" seeks to give the lyrics their proper focus. It very effectively catches the mood that was intended with the lyrics, alternating shimmering harmonies with unison lines. Each member of the quartet is featured with one verse per person. This jazz waltz arrangement of "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" is reminiscent of Blue Rondo a la Turk. The top tenor has the melody throughout, sung sweetly above the energetic rhythmic bed of the others. Other than a few slightly tongue twisting lines, this arrangement is not at all difficult, but it is very effective. "What Are The Signs?" This little Alfred Burt Christmas carol is effective on its own or as a prelude to other carols in the program, especially other Burt carols. It begins with a Gregorian chant effect with all voices in a very quiet, low unison, then opens into a beautiful four-part male chorale in its second half. Requires good low range in the second bass part.

Vaughan Williams arranged these unaccompanied carols during World War 1 for the "choir" he developed among the men in his Field Ambulance unit. In 1917 they were stationed in Greece, near Katerini, on a hillside with Mount Olympus towering above. Ursula Vaughan Williams writes "Another experince, which no one who was there forgot, was carol singing on Christmas Eve: snow-capped Olympus, the clear night, the stars, and Ralph's choir singing carols of Hereford and Sussex with passionate nostaglia. The choir made that Christmas so far from home one that had a special quality, a special beauty, long remembered."

"A Holly Jolly Christmas" is easily transportable for carorling or other programming options, this doo-wop style a cappella setting of this holiday classic will be a favorite. The traditional Ukrainian bell carol " Carol Of The Bells " has new lyrics by Kirby Shaw, and a jazz waltz setting that is unique. Irving Berlin's classic " White Christmas " in an exquisite a cappella setting. " Run To The Manger" is an original a cappella Christmas spiritual and is packed with rhythmic vitality and inspiring lyrics. Features a great hook and call-and-response solos. A perennial favourite with Vancouver audiences, Corlynn's sweet and gentle 'Christmas Angel' has elements of traditional and popular music. it is sure to be a hit with your audiences too. A smooth and jazzy version of 'Silent Night,' this piece is straightforward and suitable for any Christmas concert. Written in a traditional chant-like style with unison lines alternating with lush harmonic passages, Chor Leoni discovered Willan's previously unpublished version of 'Magnificat' and instantly fell in love with it. The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting...) - Joe Liles
Deck The Halls - Burt Szabo
Jingle Bell Rock - Burt Szabo
Silver Bells - SPEBSQSA
Twelve Days of Christmas (Barbershop Parody) - Greg Backwell
White Christmas - Tom Gentry
Winter Wonderland - Ed Waesche

Joe Liles' 'Christmas Song' is a fun and exciting arrangement. Great harmonies and a beautiful, optional intro. 'Deck the Halls' is similar to the original 4 part arrangement, but its made even better with that special barbershop sound. Greg Backwell's 'Twelve Days of Christmas' is a fun arrangement with new lyrics meant just for barbershop singers. The song starts with the second tenors singing alone. Each verse brings in a new voice until the fourth verse when you those beautiful ringing chords that only four-part male harmony can achieve. 'Jingle Bell Rock' starts out with a rockin' bass line, then adds some fun bell-sound imitations until the chorus, when we hear that trademark barbershop sound... sure to be a crowd pleaser! The sweet ballad 'White Christmas' is made just that much better with its new barbershop sound. 'Silver Bells has lots of opportunities for the tenors and basses to shine separately, this is not your typical Barbershop arrangement, but will add great variety to your Holiday program. 'Winter Wonderland' opens with the verse rather than the typical chorus opening that we hear in most versions of this classic today. The close harmony throughout makes this fun tune a joy to sing.

A great intro starts 'Jingle Bells' off with a bang! This Holiday Barbershop tune will be fun to sing and hear! 'Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer' will be a fun and easy addition to your concert. 'Let it Snow...' is chock-full of large portions of harmony-goodness! 'The Little Boy that Santa Forgot' is a beautiful, but sad, tune. 'I Want to Wish You a Merry Christmas' is a great closer for your show. 'The Santa Claus Express' brings out the magic that is that famous Father Christmas, with great barbershop harmonies. While Feliz Navidad may not be your typical Barbershop arrangement (it adds percussion instruments), its a fun piece that will add variety to your program.
