LACC encourages a deeper appreciation of choral art and the shared experience of creating fine choral music, while providing a comprehensive music education and performance program serving children from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds.
Founded in 1986 the Chorus has over 240 choristers in five choirs: Concert, Choir, Chamber Singers, Intermediate, Apprentice, and Preparatory Choirs. All children take musicianship classes (six levels) and receive individual voice coaching and biannual evaluations. Repertoire, selected to fit each choir’s skill level, covers a wide spectrum including established classical works, art songs, gospel, spiritual and jazz pieces, and arrangements of folk songs from around the world, The Chorus also premieres new music commissioned by LACC.
The Concert Choir has sung with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Los Angeles Master Chorale, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and at the Hollywood Bowl. In recent years choristers performed with the Los Angeles Opera in Turandot, Magic Flute, La Bohème, Tosca, La damnation de Faust, Die Frau ohne Schatten and the world premiere of Fantastic Mr. Fox. During the past summer, LACC performed at the Hollywood Bowl in Bernstein’s Mass with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and in Turandot and the Lord of the Rings Symphony with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. During the 2004-2005 season choristers will sing in Los Angeles Opera’s productions of Carmen, La Bohème and Der Rosenkavalier. In February 2005 Concert Choir members will sing Orff’s Carmina Burana with the Los Angeles Master Chorale at Disney Hall. In March selected choristers will join the USC Thornton Symphony and Choral Artists in presenting Britten’s War Requiem.
Touring is an important part of the LACC program. In previous seasons, the choir has toured in Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Australia, Canada, Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Poland as well as to many parts of the United States.
