Denmark, Canada, Sweden, Norway, and across the U.S., from San Francisco to Washington, DC girl's choirs are singing beautiful music everywhere. And they're singing it all - from contemporary classical, jazz, to Americana, sacred and folk. The talents of these children and their directors are inspirational; every choral music library should have a selection of treble choir titles and these are some of the best.

If our daughter was interested in becoming a fine choral musician, and money was no object, we would without hesitation send her to the Kodaly Zoltan Special Music Elementary and Grammar School, Music School and Conservatory in Kecskemet, Hungary. There, language and cultural obstacles aside, we would expect director Laszlo Duranyik to work his magic, either in his Miraculum Children's Choir, to which we just gave a rave review, or in the smaller Aurin Girls' Choir, comprised of selected girls over 14 who were previously members of Miraculum, seen here posing confidently on a stairway in the liner notes. We can tell from the first strains of Biebl's "Ave Maria" how good this choir is, and each singer individually. 18 cuts, a lot of classical sacred material such as "Mendelssohn-Bartholdy's "Laudate pueri," Brahms' "Ave Maria," Gyongyosi's "Cantate domino" and others. Traditional Hungarian folksongs "Sir a kisgalambom" and "Oktobernek elsejen,' Hungarian master Zoltan Kodaly's "Chi d'amor sente" and "Villo," Jozsef Karai's "Sarkozi karikazo," and bonus tracks "Musica" by Jacobus Gallus, Praetorius' "Es is ein Ros entsprungen" and the traditional spiritual "Deep River" are among our favorites. Every piece here is stunning, inspiring and exquisite!

The Stockholm Singing Classes, now known as the Adolf Fredrik Music Classes, were started in Sweden in 1939 by Hugo Hammarstrom to give vocally talented children a chance to develop their talent free of charge. This idea remains the same today, for 1,000 pupils aged 11-16. There are two official choirs, the Boy's Choir and the 46-strong Girl's Choir, which was founded in 1971 by Bo Johansson, and for many years it has been ranked as one of the foremost in the world. Included on "Cantemus 2" are 14 little-known choral pieces from the Int. Federation for Choral Music, all sung in their original languages, of which there are 10 in this recording. Samuel Barber's "To Be Sung On The Water," Michael Head's "Ave Maria," Andre Caplet's "Sanctus," Ro Ogura's "Hotaru Koi," Lajos Bardos' "Magos A Rutafa," Egil Hovland's "O Come, Let Us Sing," and Javi Busto's "Salve Regina" are particularly lovely. Pike Kor, whose name honors the Norwegian heritage of the college, was established at Luther in 1981. It is comprised of 100 first-year women, selected each fall by audition, who perform a primarily sacred repertoire with a wide range of works composed for women’s voices. Directed by Sandra Peter the choir continues the tradition of one of the nation's finest female choirs. This CD, their first, includes several new works by Libby Larsen, including “Natus est Emmanuel,” commissioned for “Christmas at Luther College”, and “A Young Nun, Singing” premiered by Pike Kor in 2005. Convent motets by Sulpitia Cesis and pieces by Edie Hill, Gwyneth Walker and Eleanor Daley are also featured. Much of the repertoire Pike Kor has performed in recent years has either been composed by women, set to texts by women, or centers around themes related to women. A highly recommended recording.

A performance-based music education for girls ages 6 to 18 who love to sing, the 45-strong PSGC was founded in 1989 by Master choral teacher Roberta Jackson, and has performed locally, nationally and internationally to acclaim. "Our Hearts" contains 23 of the Girlchoir's best, highlighting a varied repertoire: 6 songs that were commissions and premiered by the group, 4 World music, 3 Jazz and Swing, 7 old and new Classics, and finishing with 3 Gospel tunes. Most songs are piano or organ accompanied, some with flute and percussion. Some of our favorites are Stephen Hatfield's lilting a cappella "Colcannon," and his accompanied "Camino Caminante" and "Living in a Holy City." "J'entends le moulin," the Kirby Shaw arranged "The Birth of the Blues," Michael Haydn's "Dixit Dominus," Andrew Carter's "Badgers and Hedgehogs from Bless the Lord," and the Gospel tune "City Called Heaven." Powerful material, beautifully and freshly sung by the talented PSGC!

Beginning in 2004 with their desire to record "Anne Frank, A Living Voice," written for Chorissima's 25th Anniversary, "Voices" is the result of their search for work by women writers like Frank, who were longing for change in their situations. Libby Larsen's "The Womanly Song of God" and "Sing Me to Heaven," with text by Jane Griner, lead us into the lovely, haunting 7-part "Anne Frank, A Living Voice," which touches and moves us on many levels.
