Gerre Hancock

Dr. Gerre Hancock is one of America's most highly respected concert organists and choral directors. Possessing great interpretive ability, he is an artist of taste, warmth, perception and style. Known as a master of improvisation, he has taught master classes and been heard in recital in cities of the United States, Europe, South Africa, Japan, and at numerous regional and national conventions of the American Guild of Organists.

Dr. Hancock received his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Texas and his Master of Sacred Music degree from Union Theological Seminary in New York, where he also received the Unitas Distinguished Alumnus Award.  He has studied organ with E. William Doty, Robert Baker, Jean Langlais and Marie-Claire Alain. Early in his career he held the positions of Organist and Choirmaster of Christ Church Cathedral in Cincinnati and served on the Artist Faculty of the College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati. Then for more than thirty years, Dr. Hancock set a high standard for church music in America, as he held the position of Organist and Master of Choristers at St. Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue, New York.

 He served on the faculty of The Juilliard School in New York City and taught improvisation as a visiting professor at the Institute of Sacred Music, Yale University in New Haven, CT, and The Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY.  He has received honorary Doctor of Music degrees and a Doctor of Divinity degree and in 2004, at a ceremony at Lambeth Palace in London, he was presented with the Medal of the Cross of St. Augustine by the Archbishop of Canterbury. Dr. Hancock has recently been appointed to the faculty of the University of Texas at Austin where he is developing a curriculum for the study of sacred music.
