With their rich 50-year history and 1989 Grammy for their recording of Benjamin Britten's "War Requiem" with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, one expects great things of David R. White's charges, and "garden" does not disappoint. Rene Clausen's lovely title song has three parts, "Barter," "Beauty" and "Play Time," and the four parts of Randall Thompson's "The Place of the Blest" are particularly fine. There is accompaniment, from piano to full orchestra, but the focus is on the soaring leads and harmonies of the young singers. Pablo Casals' "Nigra Sum," Eleanor Daley's "My Master From a Garden Rose," Randall Thompson's "Alleluia" and Rene Clausen's "Peace I Leave with You" are also standouts among the 14 selections. A very special recording from one of the world's most talented boy choirs.

Aurelius Sangerknaben Calw (ASKC) (Aurelius Boys' Choir, Calw), was founded in 1983 by Hans-Jorg Kalmbach, who continues to direct and decisively shape its activities to the present day. From simple beginnings the choir has become a much-requested bod of singers capable of both choral and solo duties. Work with famous conductors and orchestras became increasingly important during the 1990s, as the group appeared with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bamberg Symphony and even the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Delighting their audiences in radio, tv and CD appearances, the ASKC brings us here a lovely collection of traditional and classical music, some accompanied, and all sung in German. We particularly enjoyed the title tune, the sweet a cappella "Heimlich Liebe," "Es klappert die Muhle," "Kein schoner Land," "Wurttemberger Hymne," the rich a cappella tune "Untreue," "All mein Gedanken," "Der Lindenbaum"… we could go on and on. A beautifully-sung collection of classic tunes from one of Germany's finest boy choirs.

Light organ accompaniment. This is the music that has filled cathedrals like this one for centuries, with worshippers wanting to hear the voices of angels in a place where they would certainly be found. Founded in 1965, the Cincinnati Boychoir is divided into three groups; the Training Choir, Resident Choir, and the elite Touring Choir. Their Christmas CD, "Gift," is exactly that! Beginning with Josef Rheinburger's "Messe in A, Op. 125 and Benjamin Britten's 12-part "Ceremony of Carols," we proceed to 5 Christmas Carols, including "Joy to the World," the Sicilian hymn "O Sanctissima," and "Hark the Herald Angels Sing." Then we have 4 "Holiday Songs with the Resident Choir," "Riu, Riu, Chiu," "Children's Song of the Nativity," "Nino Querido" and "Ding, Dong, Merrily on High; followed by 6 "Holiday Favorites," which include the German tune "Kling, Clockchen," "The Little Drummer Boy," "Toyland" and "We Wish You a Merry Christmas." All songs are accompanied by piano, harp and other instruments. As Christmas is about one special child, we particularly love beautiful Christmas music sung by a fine, well-directed children's choir like the Cincinnati Boychoir - it's a Gift!

This is from the soundtrack of "The Chorus" (Les Choristes) starring Jacques Perrin and Gerard Jugnot. The movie uses a "Dead Poets Society" formula, where a teacher, Clement Mathieu (played by Jugnot) goes to a poverty-stricken French boarding school in 1949, where troubled boys don't like him, but he ends up, through music, winning their hearts and teaching them about life. The music they perform is excellent (actually dubbed by "Les Petits Chanteurs de Saint-Marc," a professional chorus directed by Nicolas Porte), ranging from the kids' songs mocking the teachers, to original songs Mathieu wrote (like the Oscar-nominated "Look To Your Path" ("Vois Sur Ton Chemin") to well-known songs by famous authors. There are 21 songs, most accompanied, and some cuts are all dramatically instrumental, like "Pepinot" and "Les Partitions." The a cappella "La Nuit," "Caresse sur l'Ocean," "Lueur d'Ete," "Cerf-Volant," "La Desillusion," "Action Reaction," and "In Memoriam A Cappella." "Nous sommes de Fond de l'Etang" is an a cappella scene from the movie about Mathieu's initial efforts to teach the boys. The colorful liner notes have wonderful movie stills, and translate the songs line for line. This is fun stuff that makes us want to see the film!

With a tradition going back to the 13th century this highly regarded boyschoir, with its full compliment of 120 voices is ideally suited to large scale compositions. The accoustics of the Kreuzirche contribute to a romantic sound even when the emphasis is on transparency, subtly shading of expression and clarity of articulation. Apart from sacred composistions by Johannes Bach, Asnton Buckner and Max Reger, all masterpieces of romantic choral music, this program also includes some lesser-known composers. Among them are Heinrich Kaminski, director of the Berlin Choir, whose works were banned by the Nazis.

Musical and artistic success depends to a great degree on the ability of all those involved to work together harmoniously, in every sense of the word. At the same time, the diversity and individuality of each member of an ensemble needs to be taken into account and nurtured. These are the guidelines which the founder of the boys' choir and present choir director of capella vocalis, Eckhard Weyand, has adopted. The success of his concept is demonstrated by numerous concerts both at home and abroad and the way in which the choir has rapidly built up a reputation since it was founded. Following on the success of the ensemble's debut "Kein schöner Land" here is their latest release featuring this top-notch boys' choir singing sacred German choral works.

The beautiful full-color liner notes of "Angel Voices" fold out to show us a panoramic portrait of white-clad boy singers, ages 7 to 14, members of renowned 23-voice, South London-based boy's choir, Libera. Libera's repertoire is wide, from classical and cathedral pieces to works for pop and media productions. The backlit photo makes the boys appear to be angels, and that impression is not at all diminished by the sweetly soaring music. "Far Away," "Sanctus" (based on Pachelbel's "Canon"), "Ave Maria," the touching "Going Home" (based on Dvorak's "From the New World"), the lovely hymn "Be Still My Soul," the stunning "Salva Me," "I Vow to Thee, My Country," "Voca Me," the poignant, "Always with You," "We Are the Lost," the marvelous "I Am the Day" and "Recordare" are favorites, but all 15 light-to-heavily-accompanied tunes are very fine. Pure soprano leads and harmonies, a touching, well-chosen song selection - "Voices" is a choral treat that lifts us up from the earthbound mundane to the bright, clear, rarified air of angels.

The twenty-four boys aged seven to sixteen who make up the vocal band Libera, and who meet several hours each week at a church in South London to rehearse and perform, have been described as "normal" and "ordinary". However, as their new EMI CD amply demonstrates, the music the produce is truly extraordinary. With shimmering, mystical chords and ecstatic harmonies, they are unlike any other group you have ever heard. Of the twelve tracks on Visions, Libera’s second album for EMI Classics, a few will sound familiar, including Locus Iste, which is based on the well-known Pachelbel Canon, the hymn Abide with me, and Ave Maria. The remaining tracks are entirely original, with titles like New Day, Sing for ever and Something sings. The singers of Libera attend local primary schools and come from a variety of backgrounds. Although they are boys and they sing, they do not think of themselves as choirboys, but rather as an alternative kind of boy band. While the unique sound of Libera may be impossible to pigeonhole, its universal appeal has endeared the group to fans all over the world, particularly in the US, the UK, Korea and Japan, where their previous CDs have topped the mainstream and classical charts. A beautiful swan extends its wing against a pastel blue background on the cover of "Luminosa," and it sets the mood for the first cut, "Vespera," which begins with a Gregorian-type chant, picks up soaring synthesizer and sweet soprano harmonies, and returns to one of the loveliest solos we've heard. This is sacred choral music crossing over into New Age, the Leslie Garrett Show is big in England, and so is Libera who has had several highly successful songs in the British charts. There is a picture of the group in the center of the liner notes, 13 young boys, probably 6 to 8 years old, dressed casually, hanging out with each other. There are 12 songs here, occaisionally accompanied, but the focus is on the amazing, perfect voices of the boys. On "Ave Maria" (based on Ave Maria by Caccini), "Lacrymosa" (based on Carnival of the Animals by Saint Saens), "Sacris Solemnis" (based on Symphony No. 7: Allegretto by Beethoven) and "Semele" (from Semele by Handel), we hear these classical pieces in a new light. The title tune, based on "Clair de Lune" by Debussy, is a haunting, dreamy masterpiece, "Stabat" beautifully continues the mood, as does "Veni Sancte" and the final cut, "Sanctus II," based on Pachelbel's "Canon." Highly recommended and simply lovely throughout.

This recording, combines sacred texts, familiar tunes and a choir and fuses it with new age and techno styles. The Sanctus is arranged from Pachelbel's Canon and Te Lucis uses the Canon by Tallis. The texts were adapted from the Latin Mass, Requiem, Stabat Mater, Compline and the Psalms. The pure and perfectly blended sound of Libera adds depth to this music. Composer Robert Prizeman, who is also Libera's director, has created a whirlpool of sound, which attempts to create a freedom of the mind.

The most accomplished choristers of Oakland, California's highly-regarded Pacific Boychoir Academy are the Troubadors, who join with The Pacific Collegium, a professional chamber ensemble that combines exceptional vocalists and instrumentalists, to perform three of Benjamin Britten's favorite Christmas pieces. The dramatic, powerful 12-part "A Ceremony of Carols" was written in the middle of WWII, the simple and fetching "Hymn to the Virgin" has been a Christmas favorite since he wrote it while ill in bed at age 16; and the 7-part "A Boy Was Born," was a student exercise by Britten published in 1934 that deals with the nature of innocence and childhood in the Nativity story. Led by director Kevin Fox, the Troubadors handle this eclectic, often difficult material beautifully, and the Collegium, directed by Christopher Kula, adds strong instrumentals and vocals to the mix. This is a lovely, very different kind of Christmas collection of pieces by a master composer.

In this ambitious project, the chorus sings Bach's Cantata BWV 150, Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich. With a small orchestra and the addition of tenors and basses, the choir performs this piece similarly to how it would have been done in Bach's time. The soprano solo "Doch bin und bleibe ich vergnugt" is skillfully sung by Julian Abelskamp. The rest of the recording is equally well performed and features motets by Mozart, Posch and Mendelssohn.
