Ensemble Amarcord : Book of Madrigals

Review: The secular repertory of the Renaissance seems made to order for the five singers of amarcord. In the incomparable setting of the Villa Godi in northern Italy, the group recorded some of the bestknown and most beautiful madrigals of the 16th century, creating a bridge to the present day. Fiery declarations of love and the deep pain of parting, erotic innuendoes and bawdy humor in the interpretations of this prizewinning ensemble, the texts always seem contemporary and relevant. The members of amarcord are accompanied by the exceptional instrumentalists Hille Perl (viola da gamba) and Lee Santana (theorbo), as well as the virtuoso percussionist Michael Metzler.

Songlist: Come away, come, sweet love, Chi la gagliarda, Rallegratevi meco, Ben qui si mostra il ciel, Vagh' amorosi, Cucu, cucu, cucucu, Tarantella del Gargani, Toutes les nuitz, Io tacero - In van dunque, Quand je bois du vin clairet, Lucia, celu, La tricotea, Oh ecco il Capitano, Anchor ch'al parturire, Une puce j'ay dedans l'oreille, Cosi morir debb'io, Come again, sweet love doth now invite, Vecchie letrose, Triste depart, Dura legge d'amor - E so come in un puntor, Im Mayen hort man die Hanan krayen, Scaramella va alla guerra

Amadeus Choir : American Choir Music

Review: There are almost a hundred years between the dates of birth of Charles Ives, 1874, and Eric Whitacre, born 1970, the youngest composer in this Kaleidoscope of American choral music. If someone takes a look at the standard works in music literature, there is hardly any American choral music to be found. The American works that can be perceived as approaching the traditions of western music do not appear to interest the specialist world in Europe. The story in concert halls and churches, as well as in recording studios, is quite different, however. Through the founding of many choirs, gospels and spirituals are more popular than ever and, on the programs of classical a cappella choirs, the works of Morten Lauridsen or Samuel Barber have already become classics. The Amadeus Choir is an ensemble of some 50 singers and was founded by Karl-Friedrich Beringer, conductor of the Windsbacher Knabenchor since 1978.

Songlist: Agnus Dei, Four Motets, Lux Aurumque, Cloudburst, Water Night, My Song In The Night, Nocturnes, The Rose, Lord God, Thy Sea Is Mighty, Crossing The Bar, The Battle Of Jericho, I'm Gonna Sing, Elijah Rock, Variations On "America"

Felix Mendelssohn : Three Choral Songs

Review: 'The Nightingale (Die Nachtigall)' was composted on June 19, 1843 and published as No. 4 in Sechs Lieder, Op 59. Words by Johann Wolfgang von Goeth, based on a Greek folksong published in 'Chants populaires de la Grece moderne' with French translations by Claude Charles Fauriel accompanying the original texts. Goethe's version, published in 1827 is entitled 'Landlich, though Mendelssohn preferred the title given here. 'The Woodland Singers (Die Waldvogelein)' was composed on June 19, 1843 and published as No 4 in Sechs Lieder, Op 88. The author of the words, given simply as Scutz, is almost certainly heinrich Schutz who published a volume of 'Vermischte Gedichte' at Karlsruhe in 1841. 'Song for the New Year (Neujahrslied)' was composed on August 8, 1844 and published posthumously as No 1 in Sechs Lieder, Op 88. Words by Johann Peter Hebel (1760-1826). The original poem has five verses, of which Mendelssohn set only the first four.

Songlist: The Nightingale, The Woodland Singers, Song for the New Year

Jean Berger : A Cappella Works

Review: Berger's choral works constitute the bulk of his compositions, where he avoids an academic style, preferring a pragmatic blend of Franco-German folk music, South American melody and rhythm, and polyphonic modality. Here is a collection of three of his psalms for unaccompanied mixed choir in four parts.

Songlist: I Lift Up My Eyes, Shout to the Lord, My Days Are Like An Evening Shadow, Psalm 100, Psalm 121

Felix Mendelssohn : Four Sacred Choruses

Review: A true apotheosis of life, Mendelssohn's music absolutely overflows with energy, ebullience, drama, and invention, as evidenced in his most enduring works: the incidental music to A Midsummer Night's Dream. While the sunny disposition of so many of Mendelssohn's works has led some to view the composer as possessing great talent but little depth, however these religious compositions reflect the complexity and deeply spiritual basis of his personality. German and English text.

Songlist: Lord, Now Lettest Thou Thy Servant Depart, Op. 69 No. 1, O Be Joyful In The Lord, Op. 69 No. 2, My Soul Doth Magnify The Lord, Op. 69 No. 3, Lord, Lord, Have Mercy Upon Us

Johannes Brahms : German Folk Songs

Review: Throughout his life Brahms harmonized and arranged German folk songs for mixed choir. In these masterful versions the elegant simplicity of the originals always maintained, yet Brahms weaves well-shaped vocal lines and adds delicate harmonies to make polished songs of great charm. In this edition, John Lewers has fashioned highly effective and poetic English singing translations, which adhere to the rhyming scheme of the original. The result is a collection of instantly accessible yet little known repertoire, exploring a variety of scenes and moods, which will appeal to all mixed-voice choirs looking for imaginative concert repertoire. German and English text.

Various Composers : German Romantic Partsongs

Review: As the nineteenth century progressed, there was an unprecedented flowering of the partsong in Germany, inspired by the development of the rich repertory of German Romantic poetry in the hands of Goethe, Ruckert, Heine and others. Here are forty of the best 19th-century examples of the genre, from the country where partsongs caught the imagination of most major composers and delighted their audiences. The collection starts with Schubert and ends with early Schoenberg, including pieces by Brahms, Mendelsohn, Bruckner, Schumann, Wolf and Cornelius along the way.

Many of the exquisite pieces are about the archetypal Romantic themes: love, often lost or unrequited; nature and the seasons; life and death; religion and folklore; human ideals and aspirations. Some items are previously unpublished, whilst others have never been widely available. All the material appears with thoroughly idiomatic English singing translations as well as prose translations, and notes on the composers and their pieces. The majority of the items are in short-score format, for the convenience of the rehearsal accompanist.

Songlist: Da Unten Im Tale, Dein Herzlein Mild, Dem Dunkeld Schoss Der Heilgen Erde, Erlaube Mir, Im Herbst, In Stiller Nacht, Das Edle Herz, Du Bist Wie Eine Blume, Walspruch, Aetherische Geisterstimmen, Der Fichtenbaum, Der Traum, Die Sternlein, Fruhlingsglaube, Nichts Ohne Liebe, So Weich Und Warm, Ave Maria, Er ist's!, Es Ist Ein Schnee Gefallen, Die Wasserrose, Ritter Fruhling, Im Vorubergehn, In Der Marienkirche, Abschied vom Wald, Fruhzeitiger Fruhling, Herbstlied, Morgengebet, Ruhetal, Ei, du Lutte, Chor der Engel, and more
