The Vocal Majority

The VM has come a long way since 1972. What began as a dozen men with a vision, has blossomed into a chorus of about 200 that enjoys continually seeking new musical vistas. Some have likened their experience with the VM? to being a member of an Olympic team - it may be the only time in their life they can be the best in the world at something. The growth over the years has not just been in size and the improvement of the sound, but has also included a very strong fraternal love among the chorus members.

Seeking musical excellence is the common thread that links all the members. This love for excellent music and for each other is what many of the audience feel when they articulate that the performances take them on a spiritual and emotional journey. Like so many other singing ensembles, there are very few individual voices that have the professional soloist quality, but together... well, you've seen the results.

The success of the chorus is indeed due to many factors. But the real heart of the VM? comes from not one but all of these events that have impacted its members so much that they have seen, first hand, the emotional and spiritual power of music, and its positive influence on other people's lives. The chapter is looking forward to its silver anniversary year in 1997, and the chorus continues its commitment to musical excellence.

It’s not very often that one can say with certainty in the music business that any particular group is the very best of its type in the world. Yet we can say as much with this barbershop chorus as they have 11 gold medals to prove it – more than any other chorus in history. We therefore always have high hopes of their new recordings and expect something close to perfection. Well once again they surpass themselves on this holiday gem. One of the things that always impress is how such a sweet, sometimes so gentle; sound can come from such a large chorus of male only voices. Director (and arranger of many of the songs) Jim Clancy truly has a talent for coaxing the very purest of sound from a chorus. There is the occasional accompanied Christmas ornamentation and some very strong solosby Jay Dennis, Steve DeCrow and Jeff Oxley but it’s the harmony that counts, and this recording has some of the best!

Mormon Tabernacle Choir / Vocal Majority: Voices in Harmony

The Windows Of The World

Home On The Range
Nearer My God To Thee

Two of the world's greatest vocal groups, one traditional and one barbershop, together in a single collection, recorded live in 1986 (don't be concerned about the sound or vocal quality; it's super). Three of the songs, "How Great Thou Art," "Love At Home" and "Nearer My God To Thee," feature both, and the remaining eleven tracks allow each ensemble to showcase their unique talents. As the Tabernacle Choir's director, Dr. Jerold Ottley, explains, the choir sings with "an openness of resonance, and the Majority sings primarily with forward resonance. That is, they sound brighter." Most of the songs are inspirational (and about half are organ accompanied), though "Danny Boy," "Home On The Range," "Windows Of the World" and Barry Manilow's "One Voice" round out the set. Both groups have a rich and full tone that is at the same time transparent and weightless; ensemble singing at its best!

SPEBSQSA's current International Gold Medalists, their ninth such title since their founding in 1972, The Vocal Majority have the numbers and the talent and aren't afraid to use them! On their brand new "Twelve Days of Christmas" you may be taken aback to hear what the liner notes call "magnificent orchestral accompaniment" on the first two songs, "Winter Wonderland"and "Do You Hear What I Hear."Beautiful, but it's almost like whipped cream on frosting, because the VM hardly need violins, having already cornered the magnificence market. The proof is in the a cappella numbers, especially "Songs of Christmas Medley," a wonderful "Carol of theBells," "The Christmas Song," an incredible "Jingle Bells/Sleigh RideMedley," the title tune, "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas," and a "Little Drummer Boy" to remember. Lush and rich as Christmas eggnog with rum and nutmeg, incredibly arranged, effortlessly, perfectly performed, what more could we ask? "Twelve Days" is a treasured gift to yourself or anyone you love at Christmas.

This celebrated chorus' third Christmas CD - eight time Society Champions, directed by Jim Clancy. Half-accompanied, we have to admit the a cappella tracks are our favorites: "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" (The Blenders' arrangement!), "What Child Is This," "Auld Lang Syne" and "Toyland." The Vocal Majority's power is such that they are most affecting as voices only - the tag of "Auld Lang Syne" is proof of that. Guest vocalists Steve and Wendy DeCrow warm up "Baby, It's Cold Outside," and Rumor's tenor, Charla Clare, graces "Ave Maria." Bob Chilcott of the King's Singers' "I Wander As I Wander" has a gorgeous string and woodwind score, and features Jeff Oxley.

This CD, from one of our most popular groups, the Vocal Majority chorus from Texas, is unabashedly dedicated to the power and pleasure of music. The tight and refined barbershop chords, the simple yet effective arrangements and classic material result in a consistently enjoyable recording. The selection of songs included are diverse - from the live "That Wonderful Mother of Mine" to a Beatles medley, featuring a particularly moving solo by Steve Haas on "Yesterday." There is also a medley of Nat King Cole favorites, such as "Mona Lisa" and "Too Young," including performances by fellow Texans Acoustix. Several of the songs have understated accompaniment.

We love the VM Chorus' a cappella recordings, but, for a change of pace, this romantic CD will soothe even the most implacable soul. Familiar favorites arranged by Jim Clancy such as "I Only Have Eyes For You" and "When I Fall In Love" bask in the smooth vocal blend. Most of the tempos are a slow 4/4, and the orchestral treatments are lush but restrained, allowing the melody to remain center stage.

The Vocal Majority, along with the Masters of Harmony, are considered to be the best amongst barbershop choruses. Directed by Jim Clancy, these over one-hundred-fifty Texans' golden voices, complimented by guest vocalists or the occasional guitar or keyboard - such as on "Away In A Manger," or the languid stroll of "I'll Be Home For Christmas" - are perfectly synthesized. Their phrasing, enunciation and dynamics are beyond reproach, and their arrangements, many written by the aforementioned Clancy, emphasize tone color and quality, rather than a panoply of contrasting voice parts or acrobatic feats. Grace and beauty characterize the performance of the Vocal Majority.
