"we who believe in freedom cannot rest until it comes" Also from Bernice Johnson Reagon and Sweet Honey in the Rock, "We Are the Ones We Been Waiting For" written in tribute to the women of South Africa is a powerful and uplifting call for leadership and inner strength. Bernice Johnson Reagon : A Cappella Arrangements

Review: Founded by Bernice Johnson Reagon, Sweet Honey in the Rock has been a vital and innovative presence in the music culture with songs and performances that nourish the soul and give courage to singers and listeners. The setting of Matthew 11:28-30"Come Unto Me" is a comforting solace for the weary, with layered vocal phrases and soothing harmonies. "I Remember, I Believe" combines elements of gospel, blues and spirituals into a rich vocal tapestry that reflects on the Hebrew tradition of "remembering" as the basis of faith. Bob Chilcott : Advent Antiphons

Review: Composed for the Reykjavik Cathedral Choir's "Solo Dei Gloria" Festival in 2004, Advent Antiphons is an exquisite concert setting of the Great O Antiphons. Traditionally chanted or sung between 17 and 23 December, the Antiphons comprise seven brief prayers which proceed in sequence, charting events from before Creation through to the birth of Christ. The powerful sentiments conveyed in these texts are brought to the fore in Chilcott's masterful writing for double choir; he embroiders a beautifully textured work in which echoes of plainchant combine with richly expressive harmony. In the third and fifth movements, the composer instructs the individual sopranos and altos in each choir to sing their parts in their own rhythm, to entrancing effect. Without doubt, this is some of Chilcott's finest music to date; subtle yet potent, haunting, and uplifting.

Songlist: O Sapientia, O Adonai, O Radix Jesse, O Clavis David, O Oriens, O Rex Gentium, O Emmanuel

Bob Chilcott : Sacred Choral Selections

Review: The beautiful eight-part setting of 'My Prayer' starts out with a beautiful alto duet. This challenging piece is a joy to perform and to hear. 'Pray that Jerusalem may have peace' is a Scottish Psalter that was commisioned to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the consecration of Glenalmond College Chapel. The multiple key and tempo changes make this a challenging but exciting piece to perform. The text in 'God so loved the world' comes from John 3:16. The soprano solo adds a beautiful descant to this touching piece. 'Even Such Is Time' comes from the text by Sir Walter Raleight. The piece starts out with soft, but expressive, four-part harmonies. Half way through the song, the men's parts divisi. The soprano solo at the end adds a great finish. George Herber's text in 'Even-Song' is brought to life with gorgeous harmonies and yet another sweet soprano solo.

Songlist: My Prayer, Pray That Jerusalem May Have Peace, God So Loved The World, Even Such Is Time, Even-Song

Bob Chilcott : Songs and Cries of London Town

Review: Songs And Cries Of London by Bob Chilcott is a vibrant and varied choral cantata in five movements for SATB choir, upper-voice choir, piano duet, and optional percussion. The two outer movements draw their words and inspiration from "The Cries Of London" by Orlando Gibbons and frame three contrasting middle movements setting a poem each by Dunbar and wordsworth, as well as the anonymous 18th century rhyme "Oranges and Lemons." Together, these settings evoke a surprisingly contemporary impression of London's sights, sounds, and moods, inspiring some irresistible music, by turns contemplative and unquenchably thrilling.

Bob Chilcott : The Angry Planet - An Environmental Cantata

Review: This monumental cantata for massed forces was commissioned by David Hill and The Bach Choir and premiered as part of the 2012 BBC Proms. Setting a specially commissioned text by Charles Bennett, Chilcott skilfully uses both metred and unmetered sung and spoken lines to highlight the text's environmental message. While the musically interlinked choirs sing of humanity's negligence towards nature in a series of dream images, the endearing and innocent tunes of the children's choir ultimately evoke a sense of hope for the future. Creating a unique opportunity for adult and children's choirs to collaborate, this captivating piece offers a fun and educational performance experience for singers both young and old.

Bobby McFerrin : Charts Package 1

Review: Without a doubt one of the most popular songs of the 20th century, "Don't Worry, Be Happy" is re-created here in an exact transcription of the Bobby McFerrin's original hit recording from the album "Simple Pleasures." 3 Soprano parts, 2 Alto parts, and a very hip Bass line back up the soloist or soloists of your choice - a cappella. Great fun to sing and to hear! The music for "KnickKnack" was created by Bobby McFerrin as the soundtrack to the animated short film of the same name created by Pixar Animation Studios. The Short may be seen on DVD as the opening entertainment for the Pixar film, "Finding Nemo." A reverent and truly beautiful rendition of the widely known "23rd Psalm," this piece is frequently used in religious services. It's pace is slow and contemplative, and the music enhances the beauty of the language. As recorded on Bobby's "Medicine Music" CD. In "Grace," alto, tenor, and bass voices suggest the chant-like song of a carillon while the sopranos create a rhapsodic melody. This meditative score is enhanced with rhythmic breathing and optional parts for two cellos or cello section. Transcribed from "Hush," Bobby's duo album with Yo-Yo Ma. Each of Bobby's arrangements comes with extensive performance notes.

Songlist: knickknack, Don't Worry Be Happy, Grace, 23rd Psalm

Bobby McFerrin : Charts Package 2

Review: Bobby McFerrin is unique not only due to his choice of notes, but in the way he sings those notes. Each of these beautiful arrangements, all three part of Bobby's sacred music series, comes with extensive performance notes to help your group achieve the sounds and groove that was originally intended. With text adapted from the Book of Matthew, "Manna" provides a simple refrain with wonderfully textured variations that bring light to the thought "Whoever believes in Me will live forever." "Manna" includes a through-composed piano part as an additional color in the ensemble. "Come to Me" is rhythmic music full of life, freedom, and joy. An up-tempo piece to make everyone feel good, "come to me" with text adapted from the Book of John, includes parts for vocal percussion, body percussion, and handclaps. As recorded on Bobby's "Simple Pleasures" CD. "The Garden" exemplifies a new approach in choral writing in which McFerrin's African-influenced nuances are given full body by co-composer and arranger Roger Treece. The music, originally recorded on the 'Medicine Music' CD, will provide an exciting and gratifying challenge for choral singers and a rich experience for audiences.

Bruce Sled : Fun and Nonsense

Review: "Jing-ga-lye-ya" has been an instant success for everyone who's tried it. Using nonsense words, it is rhythmic and upbeat, and uses cyclical repetition in the parts creating an incredibly catchy groove! A must-see. "La-ba-lin-da" - This gentle, lilting song is flirtatious, with a swinging Latin beat. "Simba Samba" Here we go! This is a Latin-style romp. Women will be swinging their hips and men will be looking ever so suave! (At least that's the theory.) "Binga Bango" is another up-beat and exciting piece from Bruce. Perfect for High School or community choirs.

Carsten Gerlitz : The Celtic Choirbook

Review: Celtic music is enjoying a well-deserved revival. This revival may have been inspired by historical Hollywood epics, by popular dance acts such as "Riverdance", by Michael Flatley or purely by the emotional power of Celtic melodies. The songs all tell stories that have been passed down through successive generations, with more facets than any other kind of traditional music: some are melancholy dirges, some playful and lively dance tunes. This book brings together 20 of these traditional melodies in contemporary, modern arrangements for mixed chorus. In them you will find homophonic movements, sweeping melodic lines, vocal imitations of Celtic instruments and rousing rhythms. The irresistible charm of this music will leave no choral singer unmoved and is bound to find favour with audiences.

Chanticleer : A Cappella Charts for Mixed Choirs

Review: Joseph Jennings' rich a cappella arrangement of the traditional spiritual, 'Steal Away,' is an enjoyable treat for both the singers and the audience. Winner of the 2003 Chanticleer Student Choral Compositition Competition, 'She Walks in Beauty,' for advanced choirs, sets the Lord Byron text in a lush harmonic style. Composer Joseph Twish sets a deeply moving homophonic work with 'Wandering,' exploring the text "God has mercy on me. Wand'ring, wand'ring.' That piece was also a previous winner of the composition competition. 'Galbally Farmer' works well with advanced Jr High, High School or moderate adult choirs, another audience favorite! Set to a 9th Century Japanese poem, in 'Voices of Autumn, composer Jackson Hill uses traditional musical stylistic devices from the same culture to create a seamless, tranquil unaccompanied choral work.

Craig McLeish : The Negro Speaks of Rivers

Review: Craig McLeish writes of The Negro Speaks of Rivers; Langston Hughes (1902-1967) was the first black American to earn his living from writing. He was an innovator of jazz poetry, becoming part of the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s and 1930s. He wrote plays, short stories, novels, and his poetry was widely read. He was also a journalist, columnist and lecturer. The Negro Speaks of Rivers was perhaps his earliest published work, written when only 17 and while travelling by train to Mexico to visit his father. As the train crossed the Mississippi he suddenly began thinking about how rivers had impacted on Negro history, particularly in the fight against slavery. The four rivers mentioned in the poem lent themselves to using musical influences from those particular regions.

Songlist: I've Known Rivers, The Congo, The Euphrates, The Mississippi, The Nile

Dale Jergenson : Trichromat (Vocal Jazz Suite)

Review: This 3 movement Vocal Jazz Suite was inspired by many composers and arrangers of many dispirit styles of music - from the Baroque period through the most sophisticated, modern jazz era. The title 'Trichromat,' with each movement bearing a title involving a color, should not suggest that the composer "hears" music in colors, rather it pays homage to jazz titles in general with their frequent use of colors. Dale Jergenson currently serves as composer-in-residence for Cantori Domino and at St. Cyril of Jerusalem Church in Encino, California, and is active in writing scores for television, commericials, documentaries and feature films.

Songlist: Green Peace, Red Hot!, Blue Ice

Darmon Meader : Vocal Jazz Classics

Review: The swinging Rodgers and Hart tune "I Could Write a Book" is classic vocal jazz. Includes a scat solo, which is written out or can be sung ad lib. The singers are definitely the stars here, though the arrangement can be done with a variety of accompaniments: piano alone, small instrumental combo, or full jazz ensemble. With "Do Nothin' Till You Hear from Me" Darmon adds his vocal jazz touch to Duke Ellington's classic. The lazy, medium swing tempo is just right, and the full-sounding piano accompaniment supports the voices. A breathtaking New York Voices arrangement of the touching ballad "For All We Know", recorded on their CD A Day Like This. The piano accompaniment is stunning and the vocal writing is contemporary. Definitely a great choice for accomplished groups to demonstrate their skill.

Songlist: I Could Write a Book, Do Nothin' Till You Hear from Me, On a Clear Day, For All We Know

Darmon Meader : Vocal Jazz Love Songs

Review: "Love Is Here to Stay" was the last one written by George Gershwin before his untimely death at the age of 39. New York Voices' Darmon Meader has arranged it in a classic a cappella vocal jazz style, with surprisingly little divisi for such a full-sounding arrangement. An extraordinary song, an extraordinary arrangement. Darmon takes a swinging approach to "Taking a Chance on Love", with a tight vocal arrangement accompanied by piano or optional jazz trio. Clever lyrics make it a real audience pleaser, and your singers will appreciate the masterly vocal writing. Vocal jazz groups: don't miss it. "I Can't Believe That You're in Love with Me" was recorded by New York Voices on their Sing, Sing, Sing album.

Songlist: I Can't Believe That You're in Love with Me, Taking A Chance On Love, Love Is Here to Stay

David Hill : The Novello Short Anthems Collection 1

Review: A two-volume collection of short anthems from the Novello Choral Programme, representing five hundred years of church music, all suitable for SATB chorus with keyboard. Familiar and long-established works are represented alongside many lesser-known and more recent works by composers such as Douglas Guest, Philip Rose and Ralph Allwood. Many of the pieces are ideal as Introits and Anthems for general church use, whilst other have a more specific intended function within the liturgical calendar. However, all are well suited to both devotional and concert performance. The works here are short, ranging from straight-forward to technically challenging and more exciting. As a whole, the collection features an overwhelming number of choices for choirs of all different sizes and abilities.

Songlist: Jesu Dulcis Memoria, Cantate Domino, Crucifixus, Dominus Illuminatio, For The Fallen, God So Loved The World, I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes, View Me, Lord, Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring, Lead me, Lord, Litany To The Holy Spirit, Long Since In Egypt's Plenteous Land, O Come, Ye Servants Of The Lord, O Taste And See, Oculi Omnium, Sanctus, Thou Knowest, Lord, Three Introits, Ave Verum Corpus K.618, Almighty And Everlasting God, If Ye Love Me Keep My Commandments

Deke Sharon : A Cappella R&B

Review: The number one Temptations R&B classic "Ain't Too Proud To Beg" makes for a great closer or encore, and will have your audience clapping along. The melody sits in a perfect range to be sung by any voice parts (bass can be sung an octave lower), and with 4 verses it's a great opportunity for a shared solo. A soulful tenor solo soaring over rhythmic four part harmonies brings the Marvin Gaye Motown classic "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" to life. A perfect mid-set song to show off your group's ability to groove. "September" - Just four parts, but sounds like a dozen! The melody skips from part to part as the other voices playfully recreate Earth Wind and Fire's horns, guitars, bass, keyboards... everything but the costumes! NBC's sensational singing competition The Sing-Off continued its popularity again in 2011 with an exuberant celebration of the Lionel Richie #1 hit from 1983. Mesmerizing vocal grooves combine with solos and duets to create a joyful showcase for all types of vocal ensembles!

Songlist: Ain't Too Proud To Beg, I Heard It Through the Grapevine, September, All Night Long (All Night)

Deke Sharon : Best of NBC's The Sing-Off Vol 2

Review: "Use Somebody" was the opening number of Season 2 of NBC's The Sing-Off, this 2009 #1 hit by Kings of Leon arranged for the combined vocal groups creates a mesmerizing texture of sound, with a world-beat vocal groove, compelling lyrics and riveting modulations that will absolutely astonish your audience. "I've Got the Music in Me" - This 1970s tune originally recorded by Kiki Dee reaches a new level in this a cappella rendition! Guaranteed to get both the choir and the audience moving! "With A Little Help From My Friends" - This soulful "vocals only" setting of the Lennon & McCartney classic in a style reminiscent of Joe Cocker's famous rendition offers a powerful, uplifting message to today's choirs and audiences.

Deke Sharon : Contemporary Pop Hits

Review: The Van Morrison classic "Brown Eyed Girl" is accessible for newly formed a cappella groups, and satisfying for more experienced ensembles. The modern day classic "True Colors" has been a huge hit for both Cyndi Lauper and Phil Collins. Now it's your turn! "Be True To Your School" is perfect for pep rallies, sporting events and school assemblies, the breakdown in this arrangement gives your singers a chance to get everyone in the bleachers chanting and clapping along. Rah Rah Sis Boom Bah! The little gem "Autumn Leaves" is perfect for your fall concert. Lush rubato chords roll through most of the song, but the bridge is a snappy up tempo wake-up call. "Superman (It's Not Easy)" - At last, a song for your mixed ensemble that wants to sing 21st century music in the college a cappella style! This ballad by Five For Fighting features a high, light tenor solo singing about that common young adult sentiment, "it's not easy to be me." First performed by The Persuasions and popularized by The Nylons, "Good Old A Cappella"``` is an a cappella classic!

Songlist: Autumn Leaves, Be True To Your School, True Colors, Superman (It's Not Easy), Brown Eyed Girl, Good Old A Cappella
