In the spring of 1982 five guys started meeting every week in the subway entrance, the spot with the perfect echo, at 50th Street & Broadway in midtown Manhattan, the Big Apple. Busy Manhattan crowds stopped in their tracks to listen, swayed and applauded wildly. Silk City, whose unique singing style integrates a raw, spontaneous streetcorner feeling with fat, powerful background harmony, a deep rhythmic bass and a strong, soulful, soaring tenor lead, was soon performing professionally, sharing the stage in the 80s and 90s with groups like the Drifters, Platters, Five Satins and the Cadillacs. 'Keepin' It Real' is on Clifton Records, mixed by Ronnie I himself, and it features 20 juicy cuts. It's hard to pick favorites among such gems as 'I Want You To Be My Girl,' 'Everyday Of The Week,' 'Daddy's Home,' 'So Much In Love,' 'Why Do Fools Fall In Love,' 'Up On The Roof,' 'Blue Moon,' 'Gloria' and 'Bye Bye Baby.' These five guys are the quintessential feel-good Doo-Wop story, going from the streetcorner to the stage, and their love of the music shines through their rich, sumptuous harmonies. Great stuff, from first cut to last! |
